This company does not typically respond to reviews
As others have stated, I almost was turned away from Backcountry by all the negative reviews. But I couldn't find what I wanted on sale elsewhere, and I didn't want to pay full price, so I decided to take a chance. Most of the negative reviews are about the return process. So I was very careful to read the item reviews and size charts. I got what I ordered within just a few days. I paid less than half of what it would have cost elsewhere. I am very happy with my purchase.
Thought I bought a new jacket, but when it arrived it was clearly used. I contacted customer service and they offered a $15 refund or $25 in store credit. I don't understand why they would accept a return from someone if the product was used. I don't think it is fair for BC to then sell the product as new. They could at least let the buyer know the product is in used condition. I will never purchase from this site again.
I made an order because they are offering free 2 days shipping for $50 above.
10 hours later, received an email asked me to check with my credit card company for their verification code.
Made my called, replied the email in less than 20 min. Happily waiting for my items to be shipped.
Still no tracking number after 36 hours, log on and found out my order still on hold, status is "contact customer Service"
Contact live chart customer regarding my orderstatus, customer service told me NOW i can give them the code again, so that they can proceed and ship on the following day, but it won't meet my deadline as recipient is leaving the country.
Cancel order.
P/s: No apologized given!
Definitely high quality products. I've got to agree with the other review, wait til you find coupons, cause or else its going to be pricy. You do get what you pay for though, and that is some top notch merchandise.
This company was bought by a private equity group a couple years ago, and then began to aggressively track small family businesses using the word "backcountry" in their name. Many of which had no competing business or position with this mediocre e-commerce retailer.
This company is just another example of how corporate greed and misunderstood consumer spending can be leveraged to attack and destroy local businesses.
And the icing, they even went after two nonprofits that actually promote the lifestyle that this e-commerce retailer seeks to sell to!
I recommend using your spending dollars wisely... research the companies you spend with... your dollars are just like votes, and if you want to support local, passion driven businesses, spend your money there. There are so many benefits I won't get into here, but it's worth it.
Avoid Backcountry.com. I will never spend another dollar with them ever again.
Tip for consumers:
Avoid this site. Mediocre at best, prices are meh, and this company has actively attacked local businesses using the word “backcountry” including two nonprofits.

I bought ski pants from this company on Jan 13,2023. Item was returned back on Wednesday, February 15 at 5:02 P.M. with return label they provided. 1ZA9Y*******838.
After 3 weeks of waiting they did not refund my money. When I called the company, different agents started making up lies. One lady told me they didn't receive it and it went to different address and they have to do investigation. One minutes later supervisor Anthony complete investigation and stated they received something else. Another minute later he said the package was returned from another recipient. What a nonsense! Backcountry customer service refusing to issue refund for the item I returned weeks ago. I would like to get resolution ASAP. This is not acceptable!

Not only does this company treat their employees like slaves and terminate them because they broke their ankle and could no longer sprint around the warehouse an average of 12 miles per day (I have met other people who have been terminated for similar reasons despite the will to work. They refused to switch me to a desk position and "didn't feel like extending my leave"). But now they have decided to TM the WORD "backcountry" and sue 300+ businesses with the word "backcountry" in their name. The amount and "reason" they are suing these businesses for, is grotesque. I hope all of these boycotters turn enough folk away from them to prevent them from being a functional business any further! If I could give zero stars, I would.
Bought a Decked system for my Tacoma. I specifically mentioned that it was the 2020 model year. Backcountry.com sent me the wrong system (MT5 instead of MT7). It was damaged (don't know if this was due to the warehouse or shipper). I attempted to contact Backcountry.com twice but got no response. After waiting two weeks, I finally contacted the manufacturer, who was responsive and is sending replacement parts.
I have purchased from Backcountry.com before and had good experiences. Not sure why they would not even respond. Given the price (over $1000), I was pretty disappointed.
I order almost all of my gear from Backcountry. They're always there to answer questions about anything I'm thinking about purchasing, the return policy is awesome, and costumer service is so friendly and helpful. You can tell they genuinely love their business and customers.
Ordered a large Nemo bag. Purchase order said "Large". Got a "Regular". Returned it with a promise of "We will make this right". Got the second bag... "Regular". Returned it. A very nice young lady said they 'had inventory problems' and she did not think they would find a Large. Wasted three weeks and had to cancel hike twice.
Don't waste your time!
Looking for a shoe online.
Backcountry was one of them. Showed me the color but when I received my confirmation email it showed a different color.
Still took the shoe. Used a old Visa Gift card with $300 left on it. Now it shows 2 charges and Backcountry said they are getting a error message. Called Visa and they said I have to wait. 1.5 hours later I paid way to much for the shoe.
Tip for consumers:
Never use this site. They will charge your card more than once.

Im convinced the positive reviews here are created by the company. There is just NO WAY the reviews can be from one extreme to another. The POS sweatshirt I ordered took over 6 weeks to arrive, well surprise, surprise. It was straight from China complete with Chinese writing on the mailing label. The sweatshirt showed up WAY TOO small, even though I ordered it a size bigger than the size chart. Im a size 10 across the board ordered a large that looks like it might fit my petite 11 year old, provided the cheaply made fabric (stinky, itchy, non-elastic) doesnt shrink to toddler size the first time its washed. Garish buttons and zippers, way too embarrassing to wear. No return label included with the packaging, another surprise. Save your money. Listen to the bad reviews, if you decide to order fro this company it will describe pretty closely what your experience will be.
I was a bit apprehensive about ordering after reading mixed reviews on here but I am thoroughly satisfied with my purchase! I ordered a Northface jacket for my 13 year old son, $20 cheaper than the standard price with free 2 day shipping. The jacket arrived two days later as promised, in perfect condition and my son absolutely loves it. I highly recommend giving them a try!
DO NOT BUY from Backcountry. They do NOT adhere to their own return policy. I wore a pair of shoes on 2 walks and they KILLED my feet. According to their return policy, used items can be returned for a store credit. I received an RMA from the store, packaged the shoes back in the original packaging, and returned them timely, as requested. I just received a message that they are not accepting the return and are sending the shoes back to me. They were only worn 2 times and they still looked new. After now being out over $150 for shoes I can't wear, I've learned my lesson. I'll never buy from Backcountry again. Instead, I'll use my local running store who gladly accepts returns/swaps of shoes that hurt someone's feet.
I purchased a jacket, didn't like it, and returned it. Me not liking the jacket was not Backcounty's responsibility - rather my preference. So, at the end of the day, I'm whole, minus a little time invested and small return shipping cost. However, the experience of engaging this organization, from the very first phone call, to their awkward and misleading coupon advertisements, to the attitude of the sales staff, to their lack of follow up, requiring more of my time, is why I will not be back. How employees are treated and respected by their management is how, in turn, they will treat customers. Seems like a sweat shop to me.
Multiple times tried to make purchases. Forced to actually drive to a warehouse to place order in person. Handed order to employee with payment. She did not appear competent to place orders. Colleague on site gave conflicting info to me. Turns out order NEVER even placed & the items are now sold out. Do not return phone calls in spite of saying they will. Send worthless emails with a phone number that is not even in service to "chat." Assign you "gearheads " that never communicate with you.
Backcountry.com has gone downhill quickly and significantly.
Tip for consumers:
Customer does majority of the work. Online ordering unreliable. So order directly with warehouse employee so they can facilitate the order. Provide payment. They pretend they have processed everything. It's only when you never receive your order that you learn that not only did your order NOT get processed, items are no longer available. They offer substitutes not even close to items ordered. Do not answer phone & give out phone numbers that do not work. Poorly run business.
I placed an order for a pair of shoes, but when they arrived I found that they were too narrow, so I returned them. I got a partial refund of my order, but couldn't make out why. Their website talks about how easy their returns are and that their returns are 100% guaranteed, or some other nonsense. What they don't make obvious when you're making a purchase is that if there's a problem the customer has to eat the return shipping. If this was a small shop it might be understandable, but this is unacceptable for a large company that sells clothing items. Essentially I paid $7 to try on a pair of shoes. Neat. When I called customer service I was told, "Yep, we don't pay for return shipping." They should be ashamed of themselves for this policy. I will never do business with them again. Stay away.
What a awful company. The reviews are so true. I had to go though my credit card company to get a refund on a vest I ordered called them over 4 times. The worst customer service in the business. Don't know how these clowns stay in business. All I can do is spread the word.
I purchased an expensive pair of hiking shoes and wore them around the house for several days and they were fine. I did not have the chance to wear them outside and hike until after their return time frame. They were a horrible fit for outside recreational use and tore my feet up. I explained to them I wouldn't be able to wear them again and all they offered was a discount on another purchase. Other reputable outdoor gear companies allow you to return shoes for a refund or replacement within one year of purchase, even if worn. I would recommend purchasing from a company with excellent customer service that backs their products 100% to ensure customer satisfaction and NOT Backcountry.

They sent me the wrong item and now I have to obtain shipping material, etc to return THEIR mistake at my expense. They charged my credit card for the incorrect item that they sent. Be sure to read the Terms of Use before ordering... Too many quality companies out their to order from than to take a chance with them... I wish I had read reviews before ordering...
Backcountry.com makes promises they cannot hold. I paid extra for express shipping since I had friends in WA who would bring the gear to me in Europe. However, the goods arrived too late and my friends couldn't wait. The staff at backcountry were not willing to help me on this issue at all. Will go for REI next time and think you should too, they haven't ever disappointed me.
The worst experince of my life, i bought I bike, then I call after more than a week to see what is the status and they didn't know where my bike was, the I receive an email saying that 3 people check my bike and it was ready to be shipped, I contacted support and they blain on me their mistakes, finally they find my bike, I contact the sales representative because they offered free shipping and first time 20% off and nothing happened, long story short 5 business day shipment turned in to 1 month and 5 days... never ever will buy anything from here!
When you attack small business owners, take away jobs and cost people their life savings coupled with attempting to trademark OUR backcountry... that just calls for the worst ever rating known to man... may you RIP Backcountry.com because the only way out of this... make public amends with the people you've already screwed over, pay them back for all legal fees and rebranding fees, drop every other lawsuit, revoke your trademark to the word backcountry (stick to backcountry.com and a goat as your trademark if you so choose) and decide not to listen to lawyers, but your heart... we built you, we will tear you down... be a part of the community, don't attempt to be the dictatorship of it...
I placed an order paying the shipping for the following date as I was leaving in 2 days from that location. I was tracking the shipment and saw "Call Customer Service"
The customer service representative who answered the call told me they would not release the shipment and when I asked the reason, he responded: "the problem is we do not fell comfortable making business with you". I was astounded to hear this and requested clarification however he was adamant in his response. I am a businesswoman from Mexico who has conducted business with multiple companies in the States. I found this treatment utterly sexist and racist and I believe I deserve an apology. I feel total disgust!
I had file a claim against Backcountry to get the refund. Never again buy from this seller! Item that I purchase had problem and return the item and never got the refund on the return. Backcountry keep saying return is being process, after multiple attempt resolve this issue, I finally contact the Credit card company to get the refund. Never again!
Tip for consumers:
Don't buy from this site.

Hey Billy,
Thanks for taking the time to express your concerns. Our billing process does include an authorization prior to actually capturing the funds. Depending on the bank and/or card company, these transactions can sometimes show up separately. In these cases, it's typically just a matter of the bank and/or card company releasing those funds back into the account. I am very sorry for the inconvenience that this has caused. If you are still having trouble with this situation, please feel free to reach out to our Gearheads by chatting through the site or calling 1-800-409-4502 for assistance.
