As others have stated, I almost was turned away from Backcountry by all the negative reviews. But I couldn't find what I wanted on sale elsewhere, and I didn't want to pay full price, so I decided to take a chance. Most of the negative reviews are about the return process. So I was very careful to read the item reviews and size charts. I got what I ordered within just a few days. I paid less than half of what it would have cost elsewhere. I am very happy with my purchase.
Thought I bought a new jacket, but when it arrived it was clearly used. I contacted customer service and they offered a $15 refund or $25 in store credit. I don't understand why they would accept a return from someone if the product was used. I don't think it is fair for BC to then sell the product as new. They could at least let the buyer know the product is in used condition. I will never purchase from this site again.
I bought some hunter boots and they got shipped out thought all was well, I check the delivery schedule and it states they were re shipped so I had to call the shipping company that was used and they stated they can't ship to a po box so they tried to contact backcountry who never responded, so my showed than got re shipped. My order was over 3 weeks late and the lady who helped me was okay not my favorite. But back country did not do a lot to help me or fix their mistake I just had to wait it out.
I love the selections at Backcountry, and have ordered from them for half a decade. Each time I order, they ship ground, when promising 2 day for over $50 in your order. I have never had less than $200 in my order but they repeatedly ship by UPS ground and I repeatedly get screwed by the items arriving days after they promise them. I just tried to purchase a $140 pair of shoes from them and the site didn't even give me the "chance" of shipping anything but "economy", when they promised "2 Day" on this purchase. I am so sick of this problem, I will never, and I mean never, order another thing from them. I rue the day I began ordering here when there are so many better options, from REI to Moosejaw, etc... all of which deliver what they promise.
Noticed wrong shipping address on my order within 2 hours or so after I placed it (my mistake). Called BC, "we'll fix it, no problem." Tracked with OnTrac next day, still wrong address. Called OnTrac, BC didn't change with us, but "We'll fix it." Called BC back to ensure they would press OnTrac... sure... we'll send email to person in charge of that. Next day (original delivery day), address still wrong... OnTrac said they'll fix and get to me on time. Later, no change... delivery pushed from Friday to Monday... BC and OnTrac "can do nothing". Don't count on these people.
Suppose to order from North face direct but it takes 4 to 7 days for them to ship Free so I googled and found Backcountry.com. Not only did I get cheaper North Face items ( got 20% off) but they assured me of Free 2 days shipping. Just want to say thank you to Backcountry, I placed my order last Sunday Nov. 15 and expected delivery by Nov. 18, got it today! 2 day shipping made it! Kudos to its customer service Candel for being so gracious and helpful. Yes, I will order from you again!
Amazingly, once they ship an item there is no way to track it or know when it will arrive. It changes hands from UPS to USPS and nobody knows where it is. I got an email from Backcountry that it was supposed to be delivered 3 days ago, now nobody knows. This place is a joke.
I was skeptical to order from back country because of the reviews but they had the best price on the shoes I needed for work. The checkout process was easy and I received the correct item in the correct size within the expected time frame. Hope this helps someone because all of the negative reviews almost turned me away, I just had to come back and share that they're not all bad!

Terrible customer service. No real explanations on why order is canceled except saying "analytics team is uncomfortable processing order, sorry." And that was just from the live chat. A real person said the same thing. No explanation and I assume it is because my billing address is different from my shipping address but never confirmed. Never had an issue before. And most sites will state the billing and shipping must match. Nothing was clear. I do not feel comfortable supporting a company who gives the runaround and is not transparent with policies and explanations.
Backcountry.com used to be a reputable and decent company to buy from, unfortunately it has become less and less reputable and upright.
Backcountry.com and its sister site Steep&Cheap.com use very shady advertising methods on the sites, essentially being a bait and switch. Customer service is pretty bad and when attempts were made to bring up the bait and switch nonsense they were met with a resounding Millenial "whatever" and "meh".
Add in both sites are now selling goods that have decreased in quality and goods that are just overpriced versions of Walmart crap and the site(s) have become unworthy of spending your hard earned money. Ski this one and instead go to Gear, REI or other small and esoteric gear companies and websites/retailers.
Recently, Backcountry.com has been trying to copyright the term "Backcountry". They have gone after many small backcountry organizations with lawsuits, demanding they delete the term backcountry from their name. This is outrageous!
I was a bit hesitant in ordering from all the bad reviews but Im glad I gave backcountry a shot. I brought a few items during their extra 20% sale. Shipping notifications was sent out within 2 days and I got the package the week following. Everything was neatly packaged and they threw in some stickers which my kid loved. Unfortunately I ended up having to return 2 of the items and I contacted the "Gearheads" to help me with it. I closed the chat by accident but the Will followed up with me via email to finish up with the return. I sent my package out via UPS and pretty much got my money refunded the following week. Very satisfied with them and I've placed a second order again since they had the extra 20 sale this past weekend^_^

I ordered 3 items and received free 2 day shipping. The tracking info from ontrac did not update to ship. Called ontrac and they said they never received the package. Called backcountry customer service. The lady on the phone, US based, apologized, marked the package as lost, and issued me a new package with 1 day air UPS delivery from VA to CA. Received the items as promised. Great customer service.
Great shipping time and customer service. Always get full refunds, the bad reviews don't seem to add up to the service I've received. I guess if you return used items you won't get a full refund which makes sense.

Reading the return guidelines, I never return used items and always get full refunds.
Warning! They had malware on their system for almost 3 months that was stealing credit card info before they found out. It then took them 5 days to notify me. My number had been stolen. They were "frustrated for me" and "one of many companies to experience a data breach". I had to cancel my card. I do not want to do business with a company that allowed this to happen and took so long to address it.
DO NOT TRUST Backcountry or their related websites Competitive Cyclist, Dogfunk, Steep and Cheap etc. They will not stand by their promises. I bought an item, tried to return it and they refused saying that they have a right to change their returns policy after I made the purchase. They were also very rude.
Overpriced stuff because they claim to have superior service. Totally untrue. They will not live up to their promises. Do not buy from them. You have been warned.
I ordered the "Stoic Double Cloud Camp Bed" from Backcountry. It was listed as "self-inflating" it's not, but I figured I could live with that, the issue was it was damaged as you can see in the images. I contacted Backcountry through email several times and 3 times they responded they could not see my attached images, what? I create images for websites for a living. On the 3rd try, they said they could see the images of the damage and I needed to call them. They indicated they could "wave" the return fee in this case but I need to box the damaged mattress back up, and once they receive it, it could take 7-10 days to get my refund, now I have to get this thing deflated, boxed back up, drive to a FedEx and wait for a month for a refund. This will be my last order from Backcountry.com
Tip for consumers:
would be nice if their outsourced customer service spoke fluent English, always difficult when a company out of Utah uses foreign customer service to save a few bucks and there is a big language barrier.

I ordered an item, but never received it. I paid for expedited shipping to receive by Christmas. As stated I never received the item, but a few days after Christmas I had an email stating that BackCountry received my return and that they were processing it. I can't return something that didn't arrive.
I was credited the amount of the item, but not the shipping. So I called, and the unapologetic, and seemingly disinterested, customer service representative refunded me part of the difference that I was owed- which was still short of what I paid. After I explained and did the math for her she refunded the rest. After I thanked her she said "no problem" and sort of offered an apology. Disappointed that the gift I ordered never arrived. Also it was strange that they didn't offer to resend the item- I guess they don't need the money. Figured I'm better off not ordering from them anymore.

Ordered a hat, but never received. Therefore I can’t speak to the value or quality. Paid for expedited shipping, but again I never received. So I’d have to say the shipping isn’t relative to my review either. I will say, that however my item was returned, the company quickly refunded the money for the merchandise, but not the shipping- which they should if someone never received in the first place.

I assume what most likely happened was that there was an issue with the shipping address that our shippers could not deliver there for some reason. I wish I had checked reviews before ordering. I ordered a kayak on sale. I was reassured 10-14 days to get it. The kayak was supposed to be in their warehouse 3 hours away so I felt that should be plenty of time to get it to me. Shipping company now has it sitting in their warehouse 2 hours away. They were supposed to deliver last week and that didn't happen. Then I got an email to schedule delivery. Only they don't answer their phone, no voice mail and when I try to email they say my email address is invalid. I frantically called Backcountry 3 times and they told me once the shipping company picks up it is no longer their responsibility. Really? If I have a business and my customer doesn't get an item from me I consider that my problem and I would be on it to correct the problem. Now I don't have my gift to my son for Christmas and no one cares. I guess they have my money so too bad? I am very angry.
I bought 7 items and they send me nothing saying changes where made to original order. I receive a package and it only has one item in it (the one that was the worst deal and I wanted the least). After calling they say that they marked prices too low but sent me that one item as a curtesy. I asked did they sent me an email and the rep just said that would have probably been a good idea. Terrible business practices. Avoid this company.
I normally don't write reviews, but felt I should after this. After ordering, I read about how many horrible reviews were on this website, and became very concered. My order arrived in perfect condition after two days as promised! There were no issues at all. I ordered a Patagonia fleece, and it was 100% real, tags on and everything. I don't know where all the horrible reviews came from, I would totally order from here again!
I ordered a pair of shoes and sent them back via the UPS return label they issued for me on January 16th 2023. They issued my refund on February 13th 2023 (28 days later!) and that's only because I contacted them twice! First time I contacted them was in late January where they said that they received the package, they are processing it and I should receive my refund in a few days. Second time I contacted them was on February 13th where they issued the refund. No explanation, no nothing. The cherry on top was that they deducted $6.99 as a "return fee", which I didn't see anywhere in their website! Comparing that to Amazon return policy, this is trash. Will not order anything from there again.
I read a number of reviews here before I placed an order with this company and was somewhat hesitant to order because of the negative ones I saw mixed in with the positive reviews. I ordered an expensive handbag from their online site on Jan 15,2017. It arrived well packaged and was just what I wanted. When I experienced a minor problem with my purchase, customer service was very attentive and helpful. I would not hesitate to order from this company again! JRWS
Backcountry is a super place to shop for all great brands at reasonable prices! High quality, very friendly and helpful, excellent array of great products. I highly recommend Backcountry. I have been a customer for over 3 years now and I am a loyal customer! A+
So many excuses and different answers from different employees about where my original package is abd when and if a replacement is coming. It's been almost a month with no replacement and now my items are out of stock. So frustrating. Do not order from them!

I ordered a pair of Keen shoes on a Sunday after noon, taking advantage of the free 2 day shipping. Tuesday afternoon there was a Backcountry box waiting on my doorstep. Right shoes, right size, I'm a happy girl. I was concerned after reading some of the reviews, but the shoe I wanted was sold out everywhere so I took a chance. Glad I did!

I purchased the north face duffel bag, they sent me a wrong size and color. I returned the duffel and asked for the refund since I found the same bag at my local REI store
Almost three weeks now and NO refund has been issued. Every time I chat or call them they lie to me, stay away from them
