As others have stated, I almost was turned away from Backcountry by all the negative reviews. But I couldn't find what I wanted on sale elsewhere, and I didn't want to pay full price, so I decided to take a chance. Most of the negative reviews are about the return process. So I was very careful to read the item reviews and size charts. I got what I ordered within just a few days. I paid less than half of what it would have cost elsewhere. I am very happy with my purchase.
Thought I bought a new jacket, but when it arrived it was clearly used. I contacted customer service and they offered a $15 refund or $25 in store credit. I don't understand why they would accept a return from someone if the product was used. I don't think it is fair for BC to then sell the product as new. They could at least let the buyer know the product is in used condition. I will never purchase from this site again.
I have ordered from them in the past. NO MORE. Sued 10 small companies for using the word backcountry, including a women's avalanche education group. Just mean. Not protecting any brand. Suing companies that they should be partnering with, supporting.
Please- if you value small business, never order from them. They have hurt so many people. Caused inmeDurable hardship and misery. Just greed and wanting to bully.
They said, "Unused gear can be returned at any time." However, they will find a little dirt to reject your return item.

They advertise a 15% off coupon code for your email address and mobile number. After subscribing however, you learn that it does not apply to most items including everything that is on sale and most premium brands.
The last FOUR times we have ordered from backcountry owned sites, they sent the wrong thing. Then they continued to send the same, wrong item back and forth. Tried to charge for return shipping until we complained enough to get them to cover it. Only gave us store credit upon return. Most recently sent me an completely unrelated item when the item I bought was no longer available, instead of just telling me it wasn't available.
This company is a train wreck and cannot get their act together, I'm done ordering from them.
I looked all over for a good deal on boots, found them here at Backcountry. So excited I hastily ordered wrong size, called and enthusiastically Luke found my order with out confirmation #, made the change and I received them correctly in 3 days. Just nice to know someone acts on what they say they are going to do. Will obviously be ordering from them in the future
Slimeball sue happy company that doesn't deserve to exist in the outdoor community. Goodbye backcountry, good luck trying to frivolously sue small businesses with your army of lawyers, let's see how that works out for you. Pro tip: change your law firm that's telling you this is a good idea.
I've only shopped here once, and it was a very pleasant experience. Their prices were lower than most outdoor stores out there. I ordered on Monday, got free shipping and received by Wednesday! (maybe cause it's from Utah and I live in CO). Unfortunately one of the jackets did not work out for me, so I sent it back that day (Wed.). They received my return on Friday and credited me that same day! Really fast shipping and return. I wish more websites were like this. Fast and efficient!
I was hesitant to order from here due to the reviews but went ahead and did it. All items came in great condition. Everything was the right size and color as the description stated on website (read site reviews on fit of clothing). Shipping was 2 days. I am super content with my purchase can't wait to have my family wear their new gear! Will definitely order again!

Wasted about 2 hours of my life over two days that I'll never get back. Site crashed in the middle of an order. The chat person was answering other calls and confusing them with mine. Sent me an order form but didn't say how I would receive it. Took all my credit card info and then the chat died... again. Called in and there was no history of my interaction or the chat. Terrible. Terrible. Just terrible. Folks, get out of the business or get your act together. There is really no other option. Mine was 'just' a $400 value order.
I happen to be a business continuity professional and strongly suggest that someone call me for guidance as soon as possible. Where is your executive management team?
Frustrated.
I recently purchased some hats from backcountry. The next morning I noticed my bank had reached out to me and said that Backcountry charged my card again. When called back country was Unapologetic and no one would take responsibility
Tip for consumers:
Don't trust Backcountry with your credit card. Backcountry makes charges to your card without asking

Good prices, but they did not ship my items when they said they did, and then when I called, they seemed to try to sidestep responsibility and lay the blame at UPS' door. The thing is, UPS never received the package. Now I am out some items I needed for my trip today, and Backcountry.com didn't even offer to do anything for me other than a full refund or re-shipment of my package at the exact same speed. If you have a hard and fast date you need your stuff by, don't order from this website.
Backcountry used to have great customer service. I'm not sure what happened, but now whenever I do the online chat they just stop responding after a few messages. I call them and they always have an attitude and do not want to help me with anything. They used to be polite, make sure I was satisfied with my experience, and do whatever they could to help me solve any issues. Now that is all gone.
Tip for consumers:
Don't expect anything from customer service.

I was ready to place an on-line order for Patagonia board shorts - appeared to be on sale, but in my check out they were full-price... my daughter sent me a screenshot of what she wanted and it showed the sale price. Went on-line chat... BTW was disc... finally reached them again and cust service told me they were not on sale. When I said I had a screen shot of them on sale he came back and apologized and agreed saying yes they were on sale... I left the site... without purchasing... figured I'd either lose my money or never get the shorts. After reading other reviews am glad I didn't order them
I recently bought something for my wife and it didn't fit and I brought it back to the store/warehouse but I was charged $6.99 for label costs is what I was later explained. $7 on a $21 item and I returned it in person. I've spent so much money with Backcountry and this experience has left a very sour taste in my mouth. I will no longer be a Backcountry.com customer. On top of that it's been 12 days and I still don't have my refund.
Tip for consumers:
Beware of label costs and slow refund.

Great Outdoor Gear Site - Backcountry.com has a huge selection of outdoor clothing, footwear and gear. Great service and awesome return policy. Shipping is a tad on the slow side, unless you pay up for express shipping. Only thing I would suggest is look online for coupons... they run from 10-20% off and seem to be available periodically, so I'd wait for those. I've purchased a bag, a pair of shoes and a jacket from them, and I'm completely satisfied.
Just got my new Burton Ion's in the mail today a day early. Got the Orange/grey which are impossible to find anywhere, trust me. This site had all the sizes and colors available. Not even available through the Burton website.
I submitted my request, got a confirmation via email, got a tracking number, 2 days later got home today and my boots were waiting for me.
Before I order them, I called them just to make sure they were not in China or a call center in India. Steve had and accent but it was from Utah which is where they are located.
I will keep utilizing backcountry.com as they treated me with knowledge and professionalism.
My order was sitting on a shelf and I got an email thanking me for my order. It will now be 2 days late for my daughter-in-laws birthday. I wish I had read reviews for this company before using. Never again! Something is terribly wrong when they promise 2 day shipping and don't even connect with warehouse to have it sent out! Beware of this company - save yourself aggravation and order with another site.
Warning, if you are planning to return anything it takes 2 or more weeks just to get your money back. They confirmed that they received my item on Friday and it is now Wednesday of the next week without my money back. On top of all this the customer service employee I spoke with obviously hated his job and was not friendly or helpful at all.
I used to think that I needed to see outdoor gear before I purchased. Backcountry.com has convinced me that there are many items that I don't need to see in person. Their gear advisors have great knowledge about the product categories in which they specialize unlike most of the staff that now works at REI. Also, their return policy is among the best in the industry: [From their site] "New, unused gear can be returned at any time for a full refund. Used gear must be returned within 30 days of delivery for store credit."
I ordered a fleece vest from Backcountry.com - first they sent me the wrong vest (a cheaper one from the same brand, and in a smaller size). Ok - holiday season order, they're busy, i get it... then i initiate a refund, and 4 weeks go by with no reversal on my credit card. I then chat with a customer rep and they say we'll refund you in 24-48hrs, they got the item but "it seems like someone just missed it (sending the refund)". Outrageous. Never ordering again.
Just chatted with the most helpful and lovely customer service agent but ultimately was turned down for a refund by someone in accounts receivable. Paid $560 for a ski jacket in fall '20; returned within the stipulated 12 month period. Instead of returning the money to my credit card, Backcountry issued me a store credit that only lasts 12 months. They won't issue the refund to my credit card that I used for the original purchase because the cc # is now different (as I had to replace the card due to fraud). They didn't even notify me of the store credit. This whole thing feels like a scam to rip off unsuspecting customers :/
Backcountry.com is amazing. I have been ordering from them for several years now sometimes every couple of months. Never had any issues. Fast and free 2 day shipping, easy returns, authentic merchandise at great prices. I recommended them to all my co-workers. One time I called them to let them know that I was shipping back a return (the only item I ever had to return over the years) and that I would like them to issue me the credit in advance to purchase another item without delay and they just shipped the other purchase right out on my word before my return even got back to them. Great company, awesome customer service.
Shipped (and charged me) for the wrong item 3 times. One of the items was defective and due to breaking back didn't notice until went to use it outside their 30 day window. Tried to return and got it sent back, now have a pair of $200 useless pants. Stick to someone like Patagonia or REI.
It recently dawned upon me to verify my credit card statement to make sure that I had received a refund from for an item I returned months prior (after they sent it defective). Lo and behold, they had never returned my money, even though they originally said they did. After hours of talking to various customer reps that "didn't have the ability to communicate with each other (what?!)", a manager said "there must have been a glitch in accounting" and never returned my emails afterwards. I wonder how much money they never returned to unsuspecting customers. Crooks.
I am so impressed with Backcountry's customer service. I talked to this angel Miranda who not only was patient with me while I went back and forth trying to decide what I wanted but she gave me an extra 20% off my final purchase! My things arrived today and I found a $100 gift card for a wine company, a free uber ride gift certificate and a $20 gift certificate with blue apron! I am astounded. Just her being so friendly and helpful was enough and then I get all these fun bonuses! And I love what I ordered, perfect fit and feel! I will always shop for my gear at Backcountry. Love these guys!

Hey Akhil,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your experience with us on Backcountry.com. I am sorry to hear that your experience with the original order and the refund process was not up to par. It is true, right after the holidays our return and refund process is quite a mess and I completely understand how frustrating that could be. We definitely need to be more transparent and own up to our mistakes if something was not followed through. I hope we can make it up to you in the future and thank you for your time.
