“Private Sellers Beware”

Jeff T.
2/22/24

I listed with CarGurus as a private seller not once, but twice on the same car. First time I listed the car at my own price, and they gave me a good price rating two days later after my payment had cleared to them. It was dropped to a fair price. So I canceled the ad until I could afford to lower the price a month later I relisted the vehicle at their suggested price which they gave me a good price rating again, but when my payment cleared, the rating was dropped to a fair deal rating again. When I called, they said it had nothing to do with anything but the fair market value. It's awful funny how the fair market value could change after two days not once but twice! Sellers Beware this site is a scam!

I purchased a used 2008 Honda Accord at Premium Motors in Louisville Ky. I must say I had a great experience. I took the car on a test drive twice and had it inspected. Only a small issue found. I was very impressed a 6month warranty was offered for free with no deductible or out of pocket expense. Eric was awesome!

CarGurus flat out sucks! They have an automated email lead generator that send you GARBAGE LEADS! At the end of the contract, they tell you how "well you are doing" and then double your rates! They are focused on SEO search engine optimization and use dirty tactics against the dealer. Out of 100 leads you receive via email, 99 are FAKE! Fake names and obviously fake email addresses are the dead giveaway. Any customer that purchases a vehicle from us, we ALWAYS ask, where they saw the vehicle advertised. We would sell one unit approximately every 3 months and at almost $1,000 a month, it is an obvious loss of profit. If they removed the email contact and only allowed phone calls, you would see how little leads you actually receive from them. Good riddance CarGurus, one less monthly expense saved!

I've bought 2 cars and sold 2 cars on CarGurus. Both experiences were simple and efficient, especially selling a car. They handle EVERYTHING when selling. No fear of fake checks or fraud, CarGurus is the go-between and handles all the funds. A great company to deal with.

They favor dealers on their "Good deal" "Fair deal" ratings. As an independent seller, your ad can say "bad deal" and a dealer post something exactly comparable, and it will say, "Good Deal". I would not waste my money on this classified site unless you are a dealer.

Wasted months searching cars in CarGurus and calling dealers about the cars I was interested in. The 'price' listed on CarGurus was not the sales price…not even close. Add 20%+ as the 'actual' sales price in all cases. Tried to write reviews on these dealerships to help future consumers, and was rejected by CarGurus trying to leave honest feedback. What kind of site doesn't allow consumer reviews to be posted? Scam Artist site. Don't bother wasting your time!

Even for $5, cargurus is a ripoff. You cannot edit your location, than after you pay they want you to provide you VIN or license plate, and there is no way to get a refund. You can't even email them.

I regret forgetting to check out reviews before I committed.

Car Gurus is a great site to search for a specialty car. I was able to compare many cars and narrow my search to a few good choices. I choose a used car out of my state, however, it was the best choice out there. Thank you Car Gurus for the easy navigation of the website.

Tip for consumers:
Compare all of your choices before making a decision. Navigate the site to compare. Then, Just Do It !!

I purchased a 2006 Pontiac Solstice, great shape, extremely low mileage and just as it was described on the Car Gurus site.

This probably works good for a deal but a private individual selling a car on here will be very disappointed. You cannot give your number or contact information to someone who is interested in your car. It was a waste of $30 let alone the aggravation,,, I was pissed,, I had 4 people who wanted to buy my car but couldn't get my information to them.

If you are a private seller, the odds are stacked against you. They freely admit their ratings on pricing are skewed for dealers. I understand the points that dealers spend time and money prepping their cars, but they do not mention that you can save thousands of dollars on taxes and fees, buying from a private party.
I listed a car that was in the price range the same or lower than comps in my area. They listed my vehicle as overpriced and put it on the bottom of their listings. Dealers cars that were comparable were classified as high priced or fair priced and never overpriced. A local dealer told me what I should sell it at.

Tip for consumers:
Do not use if you are a private seller

1st off I contacted Greg via text in CarGurus main site. Greg responded within 3 mins of my text. Greg is an agent with CarGurus but he did get me in contact promptly with exactly whom I needed to speak with at SS motors Seattle Washington. See I was helping a friend that lives in Washington find a vehicle and I currently live in Savannah Georgia. I told all this too Ryan the salesman that was able to answer all my questions and trusted that I was not a trolling him from another state. I can't say enough how perfect the experience was cause it was just that "Perfect experience ". When all was done my friend Brad went to SS motors that evening and by the next morning he was in his dream car cruising the streets of Seattle feeling blessed for a change. Thanks a million Ryan

Run, don't walk, from this business. Weeks of confused communications and apologies on their end then the driver doesn't show on the prearranged pickup date because "she's busy." HOURS on the phone and text with their staff and no one knew what was going on, despite my having paperwork and confirmation. They need to be SHUT DOWN due to consumer fraud.

Last Wednesday I purchased a 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-550! This was the most pleasant car buying experience in all of my 50 years of life! Robbie Abbas and Jimmy Alomia were wonderfully helpful during the selection process of the perfect vehicle for me! They were great during the financing experience and ultimately through the delivery process! I would highly recommend Luxury Auto Selection located at 4580 N. Elston Avenue in Chicago!

I reviewed a large dealership in my area with multiple locations. I have one location a positive review and another a negative review. Only the positive review was posted online. This dealership advertises on CarGurus. You draw your own conclusions.

Responded to an add on CarGurus Canada. Dealer review for this add almost perfect five stars. Visited the dealer, test drive the vehicle and told the sales person
I will get back to him if I decided to buy. Next day I got 12 credit inquiries on my credit report from various finance companies and dealers. To test drive Sales person took photo copy of my drivers license use my personal info submitted credit applications to all over world without my consent. When I try to review about this dealer on CarGurus my reviews rejected, when I contacted CarGurus I was told in order to submit review I have to Initiate dealer contact using CarGurus which exactly that's how I contacted the dealer in the first place. I even send copies of sales leads from CarGurus to car gurus customer service. No response from CarGurus what's so ever. Clearly CarGurus cooking up all these dealer reviews not allowing legit customers to post negative reviews. What a scam!

Terrible experience and a waste of money. If you post your car on CarGurus, and list it even a penny over what CarGurus software thinks it's worth, they flag the ad with a Big'OVERPRICED' alert to perspective buyers. Secondly, you better hope your car sells in the first few days as the site also alerts perspective buyers how many days the seller has been trying to sell the vehicle... so the longer it takes to sell, the less desirable it looks to perspective buyers. Guess this is the way Gurus milks the seller out of $29.95 every few days to renew and make a fresh ad! AVOID!

The worst experience trying to buy a car from them. After talking to two dealers Alejandro got on the phone. Very uneducated and unprofessional. He said the price advertised was wrong and wanted to charge me $2,000.00 more above asking price. Not the place to buy a car from. These people are not to be trusted.

Tony was great in finding me the right vehicle for the right price. It was quick, easy and painless. He worked with me to get the financing approval that I needed, for the lowest rate possible. Highly recommend you visit Ziegler Chevy and work with Tony. Great guy and a big help in my vehicle search.

The filters work, but. If I filter results not to include cars over a certain price and mileage none are shown. Even the sponsored listings are filtered unlike autotrader and cars.com. Annoyances are the full screen popup banner asking to login with Google account and the homepage lands on "sell my car". Also you can't search multiple specific makes. So if I search Camry, blue, under 50,000 miles, under $30,000, no accidents then I want to look at an Accord with the same filters, too bad. When Toyota is changed to Honda all filters reset and you have to start from scratch. Other sites do multi car searches better.

This carguru, com site refers customer to unscrupulous car dealers, car dealers that' ask for deposits and refuse to return deposit if you decide not to purchase car.
Namely site shopcarsinc.com, located Cars inc. 3700 orange blossom trail, Orlando, Florida, very shady business being assisted by the carguru.com... who states they can do nothing

Didn't have issue with Car Gurus. My issue is with your partner autopay. Getting close to a month now and they(autopay) is still trying to figure out how to get seller their money. What's even worst, my first car payment is due first week in Aug and I still don't have my vehicle. So i have to pay for something that's not even in my possession, seriously... get with guys and do something.

Then I get a bunch of excuses when in question them. I really think someone at Car Gurus needs to look into this and re-evaluate the vendor. I can get a home loan quicker than this.

I don't want excuses I want my vehicle. I also want to know what will be done to make this situation right.

I don't know about you; but when some tells me they will do something and it doesn't happen I consider that being lied to. Which this happened at least twice already.

I'm mean seriously, do something!

I purchased a vehicle over a month now and still have not received the title for the car. At this point I don't even know if I own the car. I have tried calling and emailing but have not had any luck. Car guru has sent me emails but all they do is brush me off to their subcontractor business autopay. I'm trying to get an answer but no one can help me. I would definitely not recommend using car gurus or auto pay.

I responded to a few car ads- for new cars- when dealers contacted me- the price they advertised was suddenly increased by at least $3,000 beyond original quote. Dealers began to itemize everything on the car, window tint etc... as reasons for the increase. When they got through, the deal, was no deal at all. I consider that technique annoying and a waste of time for the customer to offer a bogus deal with no intention of follow through.

CarGurus suck. If I could give them a zero, I would. They only want to work with dealerships. They make it harder for individuals to list cars. I would rather deal with the flakes on Craigslist than jump through all the hoops for CarGurus.
