“Private Sellers Beware”

Jeff T.
2/22/24

I listed with CarGurus as a private seller not once, but twice on the same car. First time I listed the car at my own price, and they gave me a good price rating two days later after my payment had cleared to them. It was dropped to a fair price. So I canceled the ad until I could afford to lower the price a month later I relisted the vehicle at their suggested price which they gave me a good price rating again, but when my payment cleared, the rating was dropped to a fair deal rating again. When I called, they said it had nothing to do with anything but the fair market value. It's awful funny how the fair market value could change after two days not once but twice! Sellers Beware this site is a scam!

I purchased a 2014 Ford Focus which I was told had only one owner, the dealership lied, I found out later, the car had two previous owners, a different VIN number, and a transmission which was not the original part, and one of the previous owners had returned the car to the dealership for breach of warranty. Car Guru needs to have the sellers and dealership show proof of working condition, VIN, and previous owners.

You trust CarGurus dealer reviews at your own peril. Why? Because they don't publish all reviews they receive of the dealers' actions and customer experiences, but only the ones they like. Of course they are not going to tell you that. It is very important to remember that CarGurus has a vested interest in their dealer relationships. They can't run their site without dealer cooperation with the listings data. They are ultimately vested in the industry, not you as a consumer. If you report a particularly negative dealer experience, they will remove your review and tell you that they need "better information" about your experience with the dealer. What they really mean is that they need a review that describes a better experience and doesn't damage their dealer relations or even subject them to reprisals. You will only get mildly negative to very positive dealer reviews from CarGurus as a result and their "transparency" promise is therefore worth as much as it costs for them to make it, i. E. nothing.

Paid cargurus.com a fee for listing my cream puff '19 Toyota Highlander, a car which sells itself, and an extra $20 to have it at the top of the list. Cargurus gave my car a rating of a "fair deal," even though my price was less than the lowest range on KKB and Edmunds. I had exactly three "people" reach out in a period of three weeks. One was an "Elvis," lol, who wanted to steal the vehicle with ridiculous offers. One was some guy who reached out, but did not leave a message, and one who reached out after I just closed the deal using - Craigslist, the site where I spent $5.00, a tenth of what I spent on cargurus, and got WAY MORE traction. Granted there were a lot of people looking to steal my vehicle on craigslist, but at least I was getting attention. Cargurus is a good site - FOR BUYERS. It does what people love - gives the cars ratings, based on what cargurus feels the car is worth, which in my case, meant that I would have to sell at trade in value to get a good buyers rating on the site. Will never use them again, nor would I recommend to friends. Unless you want to give your car away...

I was looking for a better car after getting took on a car I bought after following a carfax site, I bought a Saturn outlook after great reviews from carfax well the very next day the transmission went out on it $3,500.00 later it sits in my drive I contacted car fax on there buy back policy and they said no that I bought this car after reading what I thought was a truthful car report, nope they said they don't go out and inspect these cars at all they take the dealers word for it well too me that's bull$#*!, so I found a great deal on cargurus on a 2003 Buick rendezvous with low miles the dealer was very honest about the car I bought it at a very good price, I would not have found this great Buick if wasn't for cargurus so thank you guys I love my Buick and the sales man worked his tail off to get me in the car so thank you to Bob as well great honest person

Tip for consumers:
Take your time do your homework and make a decision on your purchase if you have second thoughts stop and think hard about the car you are so wanting , I trust cargurus and I will never buy another car that advertises carfax on it you don’t know what your getting like I did making payments on a car that I can no longer drive do not just trust car fax it’s a hand full of bull crap

Sick and tired of the many ads on TV with clueless people saying stupid things like 'is it petrol or diesel' and is it for triplets. Firms like this are a waste of space.

As a big company for advertising cars, they have very bad service to the point that they don't deserve even one star. I hate dealing with them and call them so I'm canceling my service with them.

Every vehicle that I've looked at has always been in much worst shape than advertise. "Great Deal" is purely based on the year and mileage, however, there are always more serious issues going-on with these vehicles. I bought a car through them at SA Auto Exchange in Skokie, Illinois. I paid cash for the car, (8/2/17) the owner there promised me the title within the week. After weeks of inquiring about it, I realized in October when the temporary plates expired, that this jerk never had any intentions to give me my title. I tried to write about this experience on CarGurus, just as here, I didn't mention any names, however, they claimed that I violated their "Terms of Use." I have since then learned that SA Auto Exchange of Skokie buys their autos from auctions often without obtaining the title, and often jerk their customers around. They have negative reviews on the bbb, however, CarGurus doesn't want you to know about them. With CarGurus, the money they make from dealerships far outweigh quality purchases from customers!

I had a bad experience with Humberview vw, I will not trust a dealership again. I purchased a 2016 GTI 5 door white, little did I know the vehicle was in an accident, but thier car fax did not state it. I thought the quarter panel was touched up. My question to them was don't they do "pre inspections from cars off lease, you would think a reputable dealer would not do those things. They fixed the body twice, the Bondo showing, pitting and color off. The hood chipping all over the place, paint dust and clear coat coming off! I called numerous times to not have my calls picked up. I gave them two chances and it did not work out. Even when I finally convinced them to return the vehicle and had to get a less buy back. Cause of kilometers, I was not happy!
The day I returned the car they had their backs to me and given a screwdriver to remove my own plates, what happened to customer service, I guess its attitude and this specific dealership has lots of it.

My advice STAY AWAY from this dealership! Now is this the kind of dealership you want to deal with?

I even made a complaint with OMVIC!

I looked for private seller ads. Dealers are too unethical with respect to fees. I found access to to private sellers extremely difficult and controlled by Cargurus system. Very difficult.

As a dealership, ULRICH MOTOR's, which has been in business for 75 years, I have advertised with many different avenues. But I have never run across a more obnoxious and belligerent and harassing sales rep has Sam Kost. They wanted to increase our monthly rates approximately by 33% so I parted company with CarGurus. After calling me back approximately a half a dozen times I said maybe in the future I would consider it but I'll call you. After another 6 to 12 calls from the same Kost I finally told him to quit calling. Otherwise, I would never consider going back to CarGurus. Today, May 16,2023. He is called three times. This is very unprofessional at that point it is harassment. I have been in this business 46 years and have never wrote a bad review about any sales representative for any dealership or company. But he takes the cake. I'm sure not all the sales representatives for CarGurus are like this, but if you consider CarGurus do not use this person I know I will never go back to CarGurus regardless.

My first question or complaint was why is it that your site does not have a transmission filter like every other site like this does. Then I started to notice that all of the sedans are automatic or that stupid CVT garbage that chews up your transmission and spits it out. HAIL TO ALL OF THE LAZY PEOPLE IN THE WORLD! Used to be you had to pay extra for an automatic car. Now try and find a decent car that IS NOT an automatic. You may be offering a manual transmission on here somewhere. But I'll be damned if I am going to look at 100 automatics before I find it.

I had several online offers on my very clean 2015 Lexus RX350 and CarGurus was slightly higher than Carmax or Carvana at $19,200. Upon accepting the offer one of the first chats online with CarGurus was with a rep confirming my vehicle was a 2015 RX350 F Sport. I replied immediately that it was not an F Sport but just an RX350. The rep said my corrected trim had been noted (by the way, my initial offer email said nothing about F Sport). I saved the screen shot of the rep saying the record had been corrected. The selling process continued and I did the self inspect photos and video as requested. A pickup was scheduled and confirmed for tomorrow. I received the FedEx package of documents needed for pickup. 4 days ago the Lemon Squad came, inspected and drove my vehicle. Today, less than 24 hours before my vehicle was to be picked up I received an email saying that the inspection found my vehicle was not an F Sport so the offer was reduced by $1000 to $18,200 which I would not accept. I wasted a week of my time with CarGurus when I could have accepted one of two earlier offers only slightly less. Today I went on Kelly Blue Book and within minutes I got an instant offer from a local dealer for $19,000. The car was inspected and we closed the deal. Beware of CarGurus.

Helps when they tell you how many days the listing has be posted. Also a big plus that they tell you when the dealer decided when they drop the price.

I used them to find a car and buy a car, and that car lot TOTALLY screwed me and I went to leave a review, and Car Guru tells me that it has to be a car lot I contacted to leave a review. I left MANY messages to Car Guru telling them I have contacted them, which I'm keeping record for court, and Car Guru will not reply! So their reviews are what they want everyone to see and not what us customers want to leave!

I inquired about a 2011 Chevy Tahoe the seller Elda said to contact her sister. The car is in Pittsburgh. ( great so am I) her sisters address is sam434john@gm. I wrote and got this back Hi,

My name is Samantha and I'm emailing you regarding the 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe that I have for sale. It is in perfect condition, with no need for any additional repairs. Flawless exterior condition, no scratches and no dents. It has never been involved in an accident. The interior is in excellent condition. I have a Clear Title. Great mileage: 90.000, Engine: V8 5.3L and the automatic transmission shifts perfectly. The last price for the vehicle is $3000 (including delivery and handling to your address). I'm selling this suv because my child of only 26 years died 4 months ago in a bike accident, this was my son's suv and it brings me bad memories.Me and my husband travel a lot with our business and we want to make this deal through eBay's Buyer Protection Program, so if you're interested in purchasing the vehicle just reply me your full name, full address and phone number, so I can notify eBay Motors. Once that is done, they will contact you in the next hours to explain the entire procedure.

God Bless you and your family

I suggested we meet at a "safe" zone so I could see the vehicle. They declined. Only insisted on my info and they would have the vehicle shipped (? Your a few miles from my house).
