“Private Sellers Beware”

Jeff T.
2/22/24

I listed with CarGurus as a private seller not once, but twice on the same car. First time I listed the car at my own price, and they gave me a good price rating two days later after my payment had cleared to them. It was dropped to a fair price. So I canceled the ad until I could afford to lower the price a month later I relisted the vehicle at their suggested price which they gave me a good price rating again, but when my payment cleared, the rating was dropped to a fair deal rating again. When I called, they said it had nothing to do with anything but the fair market value. It's awful funny how the fair market value could change after two days not once but twice! Sellers Beware this site is a scam!

Why are dealer vehicles " great buys" when the identical vehicles in better shape with lower mileage sold privately are " overpriced"?

Good luck reaching anyone by phone or email. I'd have more success using a newspaper. I did however get tons of unsolicited emails and adds.

Car gurus offers protections for dealers in removing negative reviews. That is why you won't see them on their site.

I ran a search for a 2016 Mercedes C300 4Matic for a 250 mile radius. The search returned over 100 ads so I sorted by lowest price. Low and behold this one dealership in Elizabeth NJ had over 10, all of them white, all of them with black interior, all with various miles and all within $900 of one another.
I put in an inquiry on Monday (Labor Day) and received ZERO communication on Tuesday from the dealership. I put in two more requests Tuesday by noon and received ZERO feedback from the dealership. Cargurus was terrorizing me with BOT texts the entire day. I called the dealership three times to no avail finally Tuesday evening a text came from the dealership stating they had no Mercedes C300s in stock.
According to the lady that finally called, after I wrote a review of their dealership on Google, its been a long while since they had any in stock. Really, on Monday they had a dozen and were closed for the holiday and by Tuesday morning they are all gone? The ads are still up, still on Cargurus, still on Facebook, et al and the same trick is being played on everyone. In fact to find one I had to ELIMINATE Cargurus from my search so I could find actual cars that are really for sale.

I would not recommend this company to my worst enemy (well maybe my worst ;). They have unscrupulous business practices. We were with CG for years and added a second dealership location to our account in 2016. After less than a year, our incompetent account rep, Coleman, called to inform us that our "contract was up for renewal" for our first dealership location and that the fee would be increasing in 30 days. We informed him that we were consolidating locations in a month and wouldn't need the 2 separate accounts, therefore, closing 1 of the dealership accounts. This is where the shadiness begins: Coleman says that our new dealership account is now up for renewal too and would be increasing. He offered NO good explanation of this increase or why our 2nd location miraculously was up for renewal less than a year later. This was just a mafia-like, bully tactic to get us to pay more, even though our inventory wasn't increasing size! We demanded to speak to a supervisor, but since they likely office out of their living rooms, no one was available to speak to us. We never got a call or email. Now they stopped charging our credit card, and we are no longer on the site even though other dealers' inventory are advertised for free. Again, they are trying to ghost us so we can be pressured into paying double to be back on the site.
And let's not mention the "good deal" "great Deal"-joke! Your car with more features will be deemed "overpriced" while a car with a higher trim package but less features misleads a consumer by calling it a "great deal." The truly only reason this website is successful is their ability to appear at the top of the google search page, dominating the vehicle advertising market.

In summary, they need a better management structure and PUBLISHED, straight-forward advertisement pricing for dealers-not a hustling scam where they charge dealers different prices for the same packages!

IM A TRADER IN THE UK AND I TRADE FROM HOME EARNING AROUND £3000 PROFIT A YEAR. I HAD A PHONE CALL FROM CARGURUS AND AND THEY TOLD ME I COULD HAVE MY PHONE NUMBER IN THE ADS ON THEIR WEBSITE FOR £150 AND IT WOULD BE A 12 MONTH CONTRACT. I WAS LED TO BELIEVE IT WAS A 1 OFF PAYMENT. NEVER DID THE SALES REP MENTION IT WAS £150 PER MONTH AND NEVER DID SHE MENTION THE TOTAL COST WAS GOING TO BE £1800. EVEN WHEN I ASKED HER IS THAT THE TOTAL AMOUNT SHE REPLIED YES AND WHEN I ASKED HER IS THERE ANY OTHER FEES OR HIDDEN CHARGES SHE SAID NO. AFTER SIGNING THE CONTRACT I FOUND OUT I HAD TO PAY £150 PER MONTH AND WHEN I ASKED HER ABOUT IT ALL SHE SAID WAS I SHOULD HAVE READ THE CONTRACT. I BELIEVED EVERY WORD SHE SAID AND THATS WHY I DIDN'T FEEL IT WAS NECCESARY AS I THOUGHT WE WERE DISCUSSING THE CONTRACT ON THE PHONE. I TRIED TO CANCELL MY CONTRACT AND COMPLAIN ABOUT HOW I WAS TRICKED ON THE PHONE TO AGREEING TO THIS AND THE (more of a threat really)REPLY I GOT WAS IF I CANCEL THE CONTRACT AND FAIL TO PAY I WOULD BE TAKEN TO COURT AND THE DEBT COLLECTORS SENT TO MY ADRESS.SO TO SUM IT ALL UP I WILL THIS YEAR BE SELLING CARS JUST TO PAY CARGURUS THEIR MONEY AND ME AND MY FAMILY CAN FORGET A HOLIDAY AND CHRISTMAS.

Anyone outhere, tell me if i did something wrong
1-go to cargurus website to find the car you like
2-will see photos and dealer tel number
3-you call dealer and negociate price and car conditions
4- go to dealeship (in my town in my case) look at the car and sign papers and pay money.
Did i do anything wrong so far? Do not think so
So why i cannot write a review about this bad dealer because he took the money and promissed to do all repairs which he did not since 10/5/2019 and today is 10/28/209
I had the car for 13 hrs only and returned it to dealer. Its Ernzen's Elite auto ATCHINSON KS
BE AWARE FROM THIS DEALERSHIP
I filled a cliam to BBB, and Atorney General of the State of KS, Also the Governer of KS Web fraud Delaership site.
I HAVE ALL PAPERWORK

I wasn't having luck finding anything in my state and cargurus made it look easy to buy a car from the comfort of your home and have it shipped for a low cost, but it was such a hassle. First, dealerships don't seem to like to do business with people from out of state. When I'd call asking to put a downpayment on a car, they'd only accept it after all the other appointments that were scheduled to see that car had seen it and if they didn't buy it, then I could. Didn't seem fair since I was the one offering to pay for it now. They won't sell if you don't come in person, but I couldn't drive several hours so they make you pay a professional mechanic to look at it (between $150 and $300 for the mechanic). Next, paper work can be done online. It is sent via fed ex and then you fed ex it back. The biggest issue is that NO DEALER HONORS THE PRICE THAT CARGURU LISTS FOR SHIPPING. For one car that carguru said would cost 120 to ship, the dealer said it was more like 500. The place where I finally bought my car, carguru factored shipping for 99 and the place said it would cost between 150 and 350. If you're willing to pay a mechanic fee and a bigger shipping fee and wait a couple weeks for your car, then this would be perfect for you. If you're like me and need a car fast and without extra fees, this would not be ideal.

Tip for consumers:
Shipping fees are much more than advertised. Buying online is not an easy process.

I am a dealer.
I read the statements of many here complaining about their reviews being removed. That is simply not the case. IF YOU PERSONALIZE, LIE, USE FALSE INFO, OR ARE PLAIN STUPID, they allow a dealer to contest the review, and sometimes then will they remove the review. Too many reviews are fake, and those they cant determine to be true they leave for you to see.
If the customer doesn't click on their "Call" button, or do one of many other things that give them TOTAL CONTROL of that customer, regardless if they buy a car from us or not, they CANNOT leave a review.
Their pricing guide on clean, serviced QUALITY cars is simply inaccurate- VERY INACCURATE, and very low, but a neglected wreck gets a good "GREEN ARROW" cause its priced cheaper. And you fall for it.
They try to get a chat going acting like someone from the dealership, annoying the customer to get info and then contact the dealership to provide what they got. I DO NOT WANT YOU ACTING LIKE MY EMPLOYEE! Have them contact me WITHOUT YOUR INTERFERING! Thats what I pay for.
The age on the lot of the vehicles is not accurate, many times the vehicle arrives 30 days later after the info is put on our website which they transfer over to their website. When we finally get it cleaned and serviced, title gets paid and we wait for a clear lien from the lease company or bank, its already 60-90, even 120 days old on day one. 30 days old and we get "I see that you've had that car awhile". WRONG. Its a fresh unit.
The list is endless of stupidity to placate the masses and draw you in to their website to sell advertising and other nonsense. The facts are so different. And this controls the buyers because its "WRITTEN" on a website and therefore Leonardo DaVinci or Henry Ford himself was the source when in fact its a website fraud that you would normally ignore if met in real life.
Car Gurus cares NOTHING about these facts or dealers that pay for their services, they have a toy you believe in and because they are profitable and have clout with the uninformed web surfers, in good conscience I can give them a "FAIL", and a big one at that.

BUYERS BEWARE AND CONDUCT BUSINESS AT YOUR OWN RISK THEIR ACCREDITATION
WAS REVOKED FROM BBB...6/27/23 (it wasn't updated when we looked) one star is way too many and nice...take heed to the negative reviews! I wish we did.we purchased a Mercedes Benz GL 350 that we thought was a good deal on 7/14/23 only for the check engine light to come on twice in less than 24hrs of pick up 7/17! We even offered to get the parts needed if the car can be put in running condition and there arent any issues.however they didn't even do the BARE minimum oil change before selling the car. It was a very stressful 2 days.they lied about the mileage.as well as well as doing maintenance on the car but that is our fault because we didn't check when we test drove the car cause you know people's word should actually mean something...we tried to cancel the sale with our bank however they quickly cashed the check.so understand if you are banking with NFCU they were put on the dealer blocked list and you will be asked to consider a different dealership...now we have a 14k car note for a car that is not safe to put on the road and cannot pass VA inspection or is even drivable... I just praise God for the means to take care of it and it is an expensive lesson learned...thanks for nothing Lori and Leesburg Auto...I filed a complaint with the VA dealer board and will be sending all the receipts and text so that no one else is put in a situation like ours.(this was posted on Google 7/31/2023)

Tip for consumers:
This dealership has no integrity and they don't care about the wellbeing of others ..just know if you are doing business..you will regret every moment..only good that came out of it for us is that we know we will never deal with a small dealership ever again. I wanted to sincerely believe there was some good in Lori and the owner..but I can definitely share my experience with the world and say these people showed me that in some folks good doesn't exist
