“Private Sellers Beware”

Jeff T.
2/22/24

I listed with CarGurus as a private seller not once, but twice on the same car. First time I listed the car at my own price, and they gave me a good price rating two days later after my payment had cleared to them. It was dropped to a fair price. So I canceled the ad until I could afford to lower the price a month later I relisted the vehicle at their suggested price which they gave me a good price rating again, but when my payment cleared, the rating was dropped to a fair deal rating again. When I called, they said it had nothing to do with anything but the fair market value. It's awful funny how the fair market value could change after two days not once but twice! Sellers Beware this site is a scam!

Thru Car Gurus found and purchased Toyota Sienna with 6 cyl, AWD, Tow Pkg, trailer hitch and largest in class 150 cu. Ft. & 8 ft. Long cargo space behind front seats that I needed and searched for, and with Toyota's super reliability, clearly the best one of the few available within 200 mile radius. It's also a super large roomy convenient 7-passenger family or grandparents with grandchildren vehicle. From Duffy's Auto Brokerage in Auburn WA one of the best dealers in Washington and Oregon, big dealer with big expert full service shop buys only excellent condition low mileage vehicles, checks all systems repairing as necessary! Tim Duffy and his dozen sales associates (we bought from Primo and Christian) in two big salesrooms super nice good guys! Totally pleased with our Sienna! Because their cars are in very much better condition than others, the price is a little higher, but walk into Duffy's knowing you'll get the best from nice expert people who'll become your friends!

Nick and Romi made my experience smooth and easy. From the time I walked to the door he was already there. Nick already had the car I was looking at pulled up to the side ready to drive. We did a test drive and I completely loved the car as it was exactly the one I was looking for. Nick and Romi work great as a team and will never forget the best customer service experience I have ever had. They made me feel like I was family coming over for a barbecue feast. They made me feel comfortable running numbers and going over the paperwork. I'm truly happy with my used car and the experience I received from Clear Choice Automotive LLC. Nick and Romi are awesome and I'll always be thankful for my car buying experience. I will definitely be referring all my friends to them. Thanks guys, I can't wait to buy my 3rd vehicle with them.

P.S. Did I mention that I bought 2 vehicles that day!

I travel a lot, and don't have lots of flexibility with my hours. I stick to a hard schedule and count on others commitment to schedules. I had selected a date & time for GurCurus (and their team, because it's still so unclear who actually picks up your car) to pick up and finalize the sale of my Tesla.

Not only did my pickup team completely bail on the day of pickup, they didn't even bother to call me they weren't coming. I gave them a two hour window on a beautiful Saturday for pickup. 3.5 hours later, I decided I should call and see what the situation was. After talking to about 8 different people, one woman named Mary told me "sorry, it was cancelled for no apparent reason." Talk about trust.

Now they're asking if I can reschedule, while I'll be traveling the next two weeks. If you're thinking of using CarGurus, safe yourself the time.

Since CarGuru finances individual sales through AutoPay, the buyer for my vehicle tried that route. AutoPay was incompetent and slow to respond. After about two weeks of fiddling, the buyer switched to his own credit union, and the deal was done in a day.

I posted my vehicle on CarGurus and received 112 leads. Approximately 90% were spam. People would asked various questions about the vehicle, however never respond back. When you at your response, you clearly see the sender didn't read your response as it was marked "unread." C'mon! The remaining 10% were scams, asking for specific details like your address, banking information and personal information about the seller. I complained to CarGurus and their response was to remove my listing. I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND CarGurus to anyone. BEWARE.

I recently purchased my third BMW from Radford at BMW Fresno. I will not go anywhere else because of the excellent service I received. Radford helped me to decide on choosing my first BMW and I have trusted him since. His patience and knowledge of BMW and their vehicles is why I keep going back. The service provided to me does not stop at the final sale. I have received follow calls and text messages to ensure that everything is okay and to ask if I had any questions on the operation of my car. Radford has always been available throughout the years when I had questions about my car long after the purchase. I feel that he has become a good friend and known that I can trust him to always give me the best deal. Thank you again Radford and BMW of Fresno, for the great deal and service you have always provided me!

I purchased a 2016 Toyota RAV4 from Cavender Chevrolet on 19 Sep 2018.
The damage (1 inch in diameter, chip/ crack, previously filled with resin) on the passenger side windshield was covered with a big price tag at all time. The price tag was removed only after the finance transition was completed. The damaged was found an hour after that and notified the dealer. Michael Brundeen, Crooked Preowned Manager denied to take any responsibility by stating the following paragraph in an email sent to me on 20 Sep 2018.
"The chip in the location you described and in the size that you describe would be an acceptable blemish by state standards. Therefore, if it was in existence in our lot and at the time of sale, we would not have addressed it and sold it as-is."
Cavender Chevrolet deceitfully withheld information affecting the desirability of value of a vehicle to obtain a financial advantage.

CarGuru adverts are badly structured especially if viewing via a smartphone which requires you to scroll down at least 3 pages until you reach the information about the car which in this, as in all of my adverts was clearly stated in the relevant section of the advert. Unfortunately I have no control over how the adverts are structured and have passed my views, unsuccessfully onto CarGurus. I am extremely disappointed that an unjustified review of my business has been posted as it doesn't represent either the product or service I provide, as witnessed by customers who have actually visited the dealership and purchased a vehicle, leaving genuine 5 star reviews AVOID

I purchased my leased car at the end of my three year term and then sold it to CarGurus for about $9k over what I paid for it. Using their website the process was quick and easy. I had previously received quotes from webuyanycar and carmax. The quote from Cargurus was the highest offer by about $1k. We arranged for the inspection and pick up. It was executed without a hitch. Signed the paperwork, they drove the car away, and the money was deposited into my bank account that night. No issues and no haggling over the price they originally offered. Extremely pleased.

I had a year old 2021 Volvo S60 I wanted to sell. MSRP new was $48,000. CarGurus offered me $18,000. We Buy Any Car offered $25,000 and I sold it back to the local dealer for $36,500. CarGurus would have royally screwed me if given the chance.

I bought a 2009 Mercedes 350 4matic with 163k miles. The Carguru sales said it passed the 160k mile check-up and the only thing wrong with it was the left wheel bearing needed replacement. I had the work done the first week I owned the car. Within the first month I had failure of the drive shaft which impacted the steering rack, a failed rear differential, rear wheel tires different size, failed interior roof console, and today, having it towed due to engine light coming on with the engine misfire. I have so far invested over $8k in repairs to a car I purchased for $4500. As-is Before you buy from Cargurus, don't believe anything they tell you. Have the car checked by a qualified mechanic.

I found my dream car on Car Gurus it was at thePro Motor Cars OC, Matthew Arian was amazing for me the exact price and payment I wanted and 90 day warranty. The car is a 2012 and has less than 50,000 miles and very little wear and tear. I am so happy.

I was looking to purchase from a private seller on cargurus. They advertise all the special things on why i should buy a car from here, powertrain warranty, purchase protection, etc.

What they dont tell you is that the seller is not committed to you as a buyer in any way, I spent time and effort to book a test drive for a car i wanted to purchase. It was a day out because the owner was busy when i wanted to see the car, then before my shceduled test drive i got a text saying so sorry i sold the car on craigslist.

I think I will be looking for another website to purchase my car. Its very frustrating to plan and get things set-up and then the seller can just ditch you and sell the car to someone else under your nose. On a different website.

I bought a 2014 GMC Sierra pickup on a cooler day and didn't notice the AC wasn't working. Approximately 2 weeks later I stopped back at the dealership and was pretty much told that since I hadn't purchased the extended warranty, I wasn't pretty much on my own. I wrote a review on their site saying that I was disappointed that they were not willing to make it right with me. I received an email from the owner to cont act him about my experience. I called and left a message to call me back and nobody has called. Seems like lip service from the dealership. I wish I could brag about my experience. I got the AC fixed on my own for about $400. Small price to pay for great word of mouth advertising in my opinion

Car Gurus is advertising a bait and switch tactic for Travers Autoplex. They are advertising a Ford truck 4x4 which they know is not available. When you call they will say it is available and will have a salesman call and try sell you something else. I believed the advertisement and drove 60 miles to their dealership only to have them tell me it was just sold. I call a month later and they say it is still available and a salesman will call me. I have contacted the dealership and Car Gurus several times -- but the fraud is still going on as of today.

A dealer named TEXAN GMC in Humble, TX on carguru basically sold me a car that broke two days later("lemon"). I will no longer be using car guru to search for cars as well because they are not going to do anything about it either even though these people are on their platform. CarGuru gets 1 star as well

I had an active listing for my vehicle on Coupe CarGurus to which I was surprised last month when they deactivated my listing. When I inquired to customer service they said that my listing price was inaccurate and then I would have to relist my vehicle. When I tried to relist the only option was for a paid $29.95 listing. I get inquired to customer service and their reply was that they could not reactivate on that I would have to pay for the listing. Completely unfair and unprofessional. Stay away this website is for dealers selling their inventory.

Caught a flight from stl to Bedford Ohio because I read reviews were 4.8 and I base my judgements on financing a vehicle do to the reviews I read at Northeast Auto. Mila were handling sale and finance paper work. Before I caught a flight up there. I ask her has the car been service and if it pass emission test along with asking her if the check engine light on in car. She assured me that the car is in good shape and ran excellent and a lot of people been looking at the vehicle that i purchase. I'm so disappointed with this place. I wish I would have miss my flight that morning. Base on Mila telling me the vehicle ran good I took her word for it

I was told they would give me 30k for my vehicle. They had me take a bunch of pictures and video of my vehicle, than had me meet up with one of their " lemon squad" mechanics so he can inspect it. After wasting my time with all that, they told me my offer had to be " adjusted " to 24k. Because according to their " mechanic" my engine was " knocking" and had a front suspension issue.
All this was BS! We bought my vehicle brand new and always service it on schedule. My vehicle has never been in an accident nor have i ever abused it. Its in Excellent condition! Only has 40k miles on it. Brand new tires too. …These idiots pay their "mechanics " to come up with some kind of BS excuse so that they can low ball the heck outta you! How stupid do they think we are?!
I drove my vehicle to carmax that same day and was paid 30k for it… No problems, no BS! Do yourself a favor and stay away from these jokers.Cheers from Texas!

Signed up with carguru, over $600 per month, once the site was up i went onto the site as a consumer, clicked onto one of our own vehicles to see how it worked, immediately we started being bumbarded with advertisments from other bigger dealerships selling the same vehicle. So me the little guy is paying for leads that are being sent to other dealerships? NOT FAIR! If that was explained to me as we were signing up we would not have signed the contract. I am kindly asking for a refund.

Tip for consumers:
Ask your account executive if your customers will be redirected to other dealerships

I recently wanted to see what my car was worth and input all of my information just to get evaluation. I included what I listed as a rubbing damage on one fender. I got an offer for CarGurus. So I pop around jump through all of the hoops to submit the information as requested, and then they lower the offer on me because of the undisclosed damage that I disclosed from the very beginning cuz I wanted an honest valuation. $1,600 less for something that if I the time and money could just be popped out from the back. And again, the damage was actually hard to get a picture of as it was very light and didn't even really Mar the paint. If I wouldn't have disclosed it at all they probably wouldn't have noticed it in the inspection pictures.

I found a truck i want to buy, i contact the seller, she sends to me the info im looking for. Then the $#*! hits the fan. Before i can read the sellers response you want a photo of my drivers license? Srsly? Now when I'm trying to get back to the seller to ask her to resend her answer, your software wont let me since it thinks my zip code is wrong? WHAT? Its correct. At any rate i wasted waay too much time on this, if I could give less then 1 star for the site operations i would. Sorry for everyone who is listing to this site.
