I had a reservation today at the Dollar Car Rental at the Nashville, Tennessee International

To begin, the line at the location was extremely long - only one employee was checking in for Dollar, Hertz, and Thrifty. It took two hours to finally check in and receive my vehicle.

Then, the car immediately and dangerously over heated and the air conditioning failed. The high temperature today is 97 degrees.

I called Dollar, who referred me to roadside assistance. Roadside assistance inexplicably told me to drive the car back to the pickup location. This could have resulted in disaster as the vehicle was beginning to emit a burning smell. Fortunately I was paying attention and recognized the problem before it completely overheated.

I said I didn't feel safe doing that and eventually roadside assistance agreed to have it was towed away.

The Dollar main customer service center then was unhelpful- and I was told I had to go back to the check-in counter to receive assistance. And wait another 2+ hours presumably.

Assuming they can even help me at all.

The agent told me I could call the desk for help - but refused to give me the telephone number. She said I could go online and find the number. I went to the website, only to find the same number I had just called.

Frustrating and frightening to say the least. Reading other reviews, I doubt that I will receive any recompense and quite possibly will incur additional fees - but we shall see.

It is worth it to pay slightly more for a different rental company.

Apparently- each location is a franchise and the parent company has no ability to intervene when problems arise.

I shall never use Dollar ever again. Nor shall I use Thrifty or Hertz.

Garbage company, Garbage customer service. I don't think they retain a single customer. Even their system is down most of the time.
I should have checked the reviews before I booked.

Scam
August 25, 2022

I know there are others from reading similar post around, but Dollar has a scam within their system. Hard to believe at first when you start playing their stupid game until you come to find after thinking that after thinking surely someone has the ability to correct only to find that it is in fact a scam and they're going to follow through with it. Customer representative was told no extras and NO insurance was needed, Then they have a tiny little blank screen they say to go ahead and sign after they tell you they understand and that all is good from my statement. Only to find they did in fact charge me for additional insurance, adding 50 percent increase to the total bill. And then when you say "Hey, this is wrong!" you get the old. "You signed for it". There is no confusion as to what was said. I was not the only one there to hear it and have witnesses. There is no misconstruing what took place. It is fraud and a scam. Appears this has also happened to many people. My question as I will (and presently doing) in using every platform to do what I can due to having extreme difficulty in backing off when robbed is that does anyone know if I can press charges against the customer representative who began this?

If I could leave a negative star I would. We waited 20mins for a shuttle bus whilst every other rental company sent multiple buses to pickup, then we waited 45mins to be registered. Here the fun really started when we were threatened with a 6 hour wait unless we wanted to pay $200/day extra for an upgrade (that was then dropped to $85/day) and when we queried this to speak to another member of staff the individual serving us said we disrespected him and he wouldn't deal with us.

So on we went to another staff member who was very friendly. Told us the wait was 1 hour for a car. This felt ridiculous since we had booked already however we've now been waiting 4 hours and no sign of a car….we've been told another 2 is the max but that sometimes people wait 8 hours.

It's currently 2am….

This is a sham of a company. The original staff member was a scammer and the fact that they overbooked to this level is basically criminal.

I will never use Dollar, Hertz or Thrifty again - they are all the same company and are all treating their customers the same.

AWFUL

Avoid renting a car from Dollar at all costs. I was in need of emergency roadside assistance at 11pm one night. I called and called then called again to get through to someone, anyone. For HOURS I called trying to get in contact with their "24/7" emergency assistance line. No luck. I called the company, even the airport trying to get help. I was totally stranded in a dangerous part of town and ended up contacting the police because I needed help. I was in danger, Dollar never answered. Moving past this experience, I finally returned home to find that they had charged my card twice. When I called to discuss it with someone, they said they had no recollection of any of those transactions. Again, spending hours getting the run around, they said they had no record of my rental in Texas... Um what? I was NEVER in Texas. They refused to cooperate with me about the fraudulent charges, or being stranded. This has fraud written all over it. There are other great companies to rent a car from. Don't choose this one. It turned out to be a dangerous, expensive, stressful, and dishonest situation.

No customer service
December 30, 2022

Booked a car and prepaid the car with Discover Cars.com. When i went to pickup the car, Dollar Car Rental advised me that they had no cars. I called Discover Cars.com (for over 2 hours) and they told me that they could not help and basically I was on my own. They said that I could book another car (even tho I already paid for a car) and I could file a claim and hope for the best. They told me they have no other cars and no other solution, however on their website, cars are available to be rented. "We cannot help you" I also called Dollar Car Rental and they basically have no customer service, all they can do is assist in new bookings. "You have to call the location sir. We cannot call them" So I call the location (Dollar Fort Lauderdale Airport) and they do not answer the phone, ever. It's been hours I am trying to reach them. Meanwile, I am in a foreign country with my wife and child. Awful experience overall.

This is completely unacceptable: to be a car rental company and to not honour and have a car ready. I understand that mistakes can happen, but be advised Dollar Car Rental has no customer service. Try yourself calling for yourself.

Reservation number is: Booking DC-*******

Deceiving Practices
July 11, 2018

I felt like we were deceived by Dollar. We rented a SUV in one state to return in another. We paid extra for this to happen. The folks behind the counter went over everything but the toll charges (admin fees). They knew we were going on toll roads but failed to mention that there will be $15 admin fee (up to $120) for every toll that we go though. That's exactly what I got billed for ($49 in tolls and $120 in fees). Yikes, I just smacked down $880 to rent a med SUV for a week and they have the audacity to bill me for this.

When I called their 800 number to dispute the charges, the call center person told me that I should of read the whole document before accepting the vehicle. I totally agreed with her but my argument was that I just got off a long flight and was tired. That the receptionist went over everything else but the toll charges... that I was hoping Dollar was looking out for their customer's and that I was in good professional hands. Not the case at all.

I went on the internet and found others have been duped, scammed, deceived... whatever you want to call it. I call it a scam. They did cut the charges in half to $60 (still a scam) for the 1st offense. I would of paid the toll insurance if I've known this up front. The toll roads I was on also did not accept cash. They were pay by plate. I will never ever rent car from Dollar/Thrifty/Hertz (same company) until they stopped their deceptive practices. We also wrote AAA (who we went though) of this scam and that they should be aware that their reputation is in jeopardy also.

Do not rent a car from Dollar Car especially at the Portland airport! RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN! I would rather walk than deal with their shady, unethical business practices. They are the absolute worse rental car company I have ever dealt with in my entire life! After we had a minor accident that damaged the bumper, they charged astronomical fees for loss of use. They sent the repair charges and the vehicle was in the shop for 6 hours, yet they charged me hundreds of dollars for days of repairs. My insurance company refused to pay stating it was a scam. When I raised the issues with them, they threatened to send me to collections, were unprofessional and unworkable. They refuse to compromise and make demands that are not in the contract. Go to any other rental car company! This company is terrible! The absolute worst! I cannot thoroughly express how horrible my experience has been. They operate a shady, fraudulent scheme where they are scamming customers for unsubstantiated loss of use charges. DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM DOLLAR CAR RENTAL EVER!

I reserved a car fr 217.65 that I put on my credit card. I went to pick it up and the agent, wearing a mask and speaking very low, asked me to sign the "contract" that totaled $364.33. I had received an email upon reserving the car online that had an approx total of 304.00. I told the agent that I did not want any additional coverage, she said okay, I asked if the amount I was signing including EVERYTHING including the amount I paid online to reserve and was told yes.
I looked at my statement a few days later and noticed I had an additional charge of 364.33. I called and was told that that was the taxes/fees, airport service and extra service protection which I distinctly told her I did not want. I called and was told by two ppl that they could not reimburse me, asked me if I went to get the car fixed and if so, I could submit the receipt, also asked if I called roadside assistance. I asked to be reimbursed for either the cost of the car or the extra service protection and was told that once the contract was signed there was nothing they could do; we all know that they can, just won't do it.
I called Hertz the following day and was told the same thing.
Both calls I asked to speak to the supervisors manager and was told that they were the highest in the escalation process and there was no one else I could talk to.
I am beyond furious with both Dollar and Hertz. I usually rent from Budget who is ALWAYS so nice and helpful.
I cannot believe I am having to pay 581.00 for a compact car that was unsafe to drive and coverage that I truly believe I was scammed.

Buyer beware!
November 19, 2019

******* read the Better business bureau reviews*********

Rented a one way rental with Dollar car rental and was told it would be 69.00. I was then charged 369.00 plus holds of another 400. I rented a car on Friday, November 15 from Orlando airport to drop it off at Tampa airport. I picked the car up at approximately 830p. I then drove it an hour and a half to Tampa. When I dropped the car off at 10p, there was no one around to speak to or go over finalizing the rental, just a sign that said to leave keys in the vehicle. The next morning at 630a I received an email stating the final charges were 69.00 and they would refund the 200.00 hold, which they did. Four hours later I received another email stating they were now charging me 369.00 for damage to the vehicle. They then put another 300 then 100 hold on my bank account. When I called, they told me it was for smoking in the vehicle. I don't smoke. So, now they have 769.00 of my money in my account. I called customer service three times, each time I was sent to a call center outside of the US. They refused to help me with my issue and wouldn't give me a direct number to the Tampa location so I could clear this up. There is no recourse for their mistake. This company has now caused me financial hardship and complete inconvenience for fraudulent charges by them. The fact that there is no way to talk to somebody at that location is horrible. There is nowhere to go with these claims. You're treated rudely and disregarded with no way of resolving the issue.

Even though we prepaid 2/3 of the car in advance via Orbitz, even though I called at the desk directly in Calgary to inform that our flight was cancelled and we would take another flight later that day and gave the flight number and even though the person on the phone told me no problem, when we arrived at the counter there was no more cars available (sold out at Hertz, Thrifty and Dollar (same management)). We were 3 parties from the same plane in the same situation. I spoke on the phone to the manager (Janniny) and she told us that nothing could be done and we would have to come back the morning after. We told her that we had an hotel prepaid in Banff (which is more than 1h30 from Calgary), but she just could not do anything about it.

By chance there was the clerk at the counter (Frank Gonzalves from Hertz), who was customer oriented. He even offered us to drive us to Banff (3 hours round trip!). Contrarely to Janniny his manager and contrarely to the company he is working for, this person knows what customer service and customer experience is.

A 0/10 for the rental company and its manager Janniny
A big 10/10 for Frank Gonzalves

I booked and reserved a 7-seater minivan on Oct. 14,2023, to pick it up on Nov. 10,2023. I got there two hours and 17 minutes before my reservation time. Let me back up a bit. In between the time frame of October to November, I called Dollar Rent A Car to twice, one to confirm that the type vehicle would be available on the day of my pickup, and just 8 days before my scheduled pickup I called again to confirm that the van will be at the pickup location which was 2300 Rental Car Center Parkway, College Park, Georgia, USA, ATL -Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. On both occasions I got a YES confirmation. So, move forward now, during me standing in line, I keep witnessing frustrated people and folks started cussing about making a reservation and not getting a car. So, I called Dollar Rent A to confirm once again that my scheduled minivan was there at the pickup location, and they told me YES, all I must do is just wait in the line until I get to the counter. When I reached up to the counter, I stretched out the reservation paper to the agent who did not even look at it let alone took it from my hand. She just looked me in the eye and told me that there were no cars available and that I would have to wait 4-5 hours or come back in the morning. I told her I understood that, but I am not here for a car, I'm here for a minivan. She repeated herself again, so I repeated myself again also and asked to just at least check the reservation to see if there was a 7-seater minivan out there because I just called, and you guys confirmed that the van was out there. She left from behind the counter and called everyone's attention and stated that there was no vehicle on the lot, that there was a 4-5 hrs. Wait, and that time started at the time she checks in or to come back in the morning and neither one of these option is guaranteed and she cannot do any cancelling, we all have to cancel with who we purchased through.
