What in the world does a filmmaker's sexual orientation, gender identification and race have to do with whether a film is selected for the Sundance Film Festival? The answer should be: NOTHING.
I think it is crazy to include the following questions on the Sundance Film Festival application questionnaire on FilmFreeway:
How would Director1 define their sexual orientation?
What is Director1's gender expression?
Does Director1 identify as Transgender?
What is Director1's race and/or ethnic origin? (may select more than one)
WHAT IN THE WORLD DO ANY OF THESE THINGS HAVE TO DO WITH THE QUALITY OF A FILM AND ITS WORTHINESS TO BE SELECTED FOR THE SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL? SO A BLACK QUEER OR TRANSGENDER FILMMAKER IS MORE LIKELY TO BE SELECTED FOR SUNDANCE THAN A WHITE, STRAIGHT FILMMAKER? THAT IS SO RIDICULOUS, DISCRIMINATORY, AND ELITIST.
ARE YOU AWARE THAT SUNDANCE FOUNDER ROBERT REDFORD IS STRAIGHT AND WHITE?
AND WHY ASK SUNDANCE APPLICANTS WHAT YEAR THEY WERE BORN AND IF THEY HAVE A DISABILITY? WHAT YEAR IS TOO OLD FOR YOU? WHO CARES? IS THE FILM OF A YOUNG, DISABLED, GAY, TRANSGENDER FILMMAKER FROM AN ETHNIC MINORITY MORE LIKELY TO BE SELECTED AS A SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL PARTICIPANT? ALL THAT SHOULD MATTER IS THE QUALITY OF A FILM!
