My husband and I live in a small rural country town, the nearest major shopping (grocery stores, fast food) is over an hour away. We usually drive into town twice a month, to stock up on groceries and necessities. But it's hard to keep perishables fresh, long enough to use before they go bad. We have come to depend on canned, boxed and frozen foods. So, our meals have become stale, boring and routine. Home Chef revived us: fresh ingredients, new cuisines, great recipes, great meat and vegetable choices, and we live within delivery!
I have gotten boxed meals for over a year and a half from several companies. A few have been great and some not so good. Home Chef has some really good recipes at an affordable price. However, their customer service is the worst by far! After receiving a box that had ants all through the box I tried to contact customer service via phone. They were closed at the time so I sent an email with pictures attached. This was on a Wednesday. It is now Monday and I cannot get a hold of them by phone. As has been the case everyday, the call is dropped after the first ring. And the have yet to answer either of my two emails. I had added an extra meal to that order to make matters ever worse. I'm very disappointed and will be cancelling my subscription and going back to Hello fresh. Their customer service is fantastic.
Delicious! We have loved everything we've tried. This service has helped me try recipes I might otherwise pass on since you receive only the amount of ingredients you need for the recipe you are making. You don't wind up with left over items you won't use before they're outdated. Love it.
The recipes were often really good, however, out of the three boxes we received two were missing very important ingredients. The best response we got was a $5 credit onto our next box, what a joke. They ruin a $20 meal and respond by making you buy another box at almost full price...
Home Chef has been exceptional. The food has been excellent in taste, and has a good selection of menu options. Too date, the package comes when it is supposed to. The cooking instructions are clear and easy to follow. They provide a binder for all the recipes that you will want to keep... which is all of them. Very happy I found Home Chef.

We haven't had a bad meal yet, with everything from steak to vegetarian meals. As far as price goes, I urge people to add up the tIme spent shopping for groceries, hauling them home, putting them away, and then making time for cooking.
How much is your time worth? How much do you value more free time?
Plus, there's no waste, no weird, yucky, and unrecognizable food hiding in the bottom of the vegetable drawer or stuck in a container in the back of the fridge. Home chef works for our budget and our lifestyle.
I really Love their recipes! All the ingredients seem fresh and recipes are well written. The food tastes pretty good too :) Their customer service is responsive and helpful. So happy to cook with Home Chef!
My husband and I have been getting Home Chef for several years. (I think 141 meals to be exact!) We typically alternate with Hello Fresh and Freshly when we don't like the weekly suggestions. Sadly, I think we may be quitting Home Chef for good because of delivery issues. FedEX is horrible. We have gotten two deliveries this year a day late, so we've had to throw them out. One time, FedEx left us a note saying we had to go to their facility to pick up the box because it required a signature... NOT! Until they switch carriers, we are off Home Chef. Our box was mailed out Monday - and it's Thursday morning and we are just getting it. Thus, it won't be properly refrigerated until 5pm tonight - and likely the chicken will be on its way to spoiled.
Well, Ive been with HomeChef for about 6 months or so now. I love the recipes, and I can tell that they use quality ingredients, however, I consistently receive meat that has browned, rotted, or leaked, and vegetables that have gone bad. Every time I notify them, they do give a $10 credit (on a $20 meal), however, its just happening too often, and Im afraid Im going to have to discontinue the service. A loss for me, because I really enjoy the menu and the concept along with the convenience of their service. I will try again in a year, after theyve been in business a bit longer and hopefully improve before they lose too many customers / revenues.
We have been with Home Chef for a little over 3 months. A little surprised at the negative comments. Aside from one incomplete order which they immediately refunded have been very satisfied with the quality and customer service. Also delivery has always been on day we designated. We've enjoyed trying meals we otherwise wouldn't have made ourselves. My only "complaint" is noticing that trend seems to be toward more expensive meals. Like to stick to the $8.99 options.

Food service
So, I have to take just a minute to rave about our menu delivery service, Home Chef. The food is so good, inventive, and healthy, and I get SO excited every Friday waiting for the box to arrive and the new menu choices to be posted. It's wonderful to be back in the kitchen, cooking from scratch every night, and we really enjoy the food. It is such a weird, cool feeling to walk into the grocery store and not need a single thing for dinner. We just get our cat food and milk and done - our grocery bill has actually gone down since we started the service, and we waste almost no food now! Seriously, I freaking LOVE it, and I can't recommend it highly enough for anyone who's curious or on the fence about subscribing.
I am an empty nester, middle age woman who has always cooked with fresh ingredients and from scratch. Since I have become single and an empty nester, I have found it was more tedious to cook this way for just myself. When I purchase all the ingredients for dishes it is more than I can consume and half would end up in the garbage. I ended up eating simple foods and visiting the deli too much. Whoever thought of this is a genius! I am now cooking foods that I enjoy and there is no waste. The produce is so fresh and I get the satisfaction of cooking meals from scratch and enjoying good, wholesome food again. Thank You!
When people sign up for these type of services you expect at least reliability meaning you will get the food on time. That's why I don't buy groceries, I expect the box. This is the second service I go thru and maybe the last, where the boxes don't arrive! I'm sick and tired of the COVID excuse too. If they can't de; over on time or at least let their customers know in advanced so they can get groceries, then do someth9ng else!
I got the " your box is late" for the third time, and it never got here. I suspended my account, waiting for my refund. Food is great, but again with an unreliable service, who cares how good the food taste..
Tip for consumers:
Don’t bother, you might get a box, you might not....and you’ll get the COVID excuse every time.

I've tried 4 x to get answers from support... not a single response AND my first order has not arrived but they certainly billed my credit card! Very disappointed and ready to try a different service.
I tried this service once and was not happy to see that my box arrived leaking some kind of fluid. I let it go and cooked the food, which was tasty enough. Following this, I had a mix up with my account and was sent a delivery the day before Thanksgiving while I was out of town. While I should have been more careful to make sure that I didn't get this delivery, there was a complication with my account which explained why this happened. When I reached out to them about it, they couldn't see my side of the issue at all and simply referred to it as "user error." A smart business would try to keep me as a happy customer for future profits, but this company doesn't operate this way. My experience with Blue Apron has been much more positive and I will stick with them.
I've been using HC for years. Over 380 meals on my account. I finally canceled my subscription today due to yet ANOTHER week of missing food. Every single week it seems I'm missing either the meat or the meal kit of one meal. Customer service is very friendly and always refunds me for the meal, but I'm sick of having to call them. I use a meal delivery service for a REASON...so I don't have to plan my dinners. So it's incredibly annoying to have a missing dinner almost every week. I really hate to cancel as I love the food, and the selection is one of the best I've seen, but in the last few months, their quality control has been garbage.

For the first 6 months my delivery arrived on the selected date. Only one box with missing ingredient. And we have enjoyed everything we ordered(except the steak which has a lot in common with shoe leather). UNFORTUNATELY for the last 2 months my Thursday delivery has consistently arrived on Friday. It's winter and all but one box arrived edible. The cold weather won't last forever. The problem does appear to be with FedEx but despite repeated calls where they promised to reach out to FedEx and get back to me the deliveries continue to show up a day late and not once have I received a follow-up call or email. I will once again call and complain even though I know nothing will change. Well something will change - I have gone into my account and skipped every week shown and I will be 'pausing' (because you can't actually cancel) my account. I am totally DONE with this company!
Home Chef, without a doubt, has to be the best in quality! We have NEVER had a meal that wasnt great taste, easy to prepare and all produce is very fresh. It is the best decision Ive had in a year. My husband loves all the dinners weve had!
I would recommend everyone to try it, and if not happy with it you can always drop it!
Happy meals.
Watch out, this is setup so if you stop orders they will get two hole order cycles in before you get a delivery and screw you out of your money. Better off canceling the service when you don; t need it or you will end up with a whole lot of food you didn't want and didn't select.
We received a great promo and used this service for a while. We loved almost all of the recipes and the quality of the ingredients were almost always excellent. We loved how they separated each meal into its own bag to make it easy (some meal kits have just thrown everything in a box!).
We have tried 6 different meal kits and this was our favorite. What I really appreciated was the great customer service and they really seemed like they cared (which is rare!). It was common to miss an ingredient but they always made it right.
Two Downsides:
-Full price option is very expensive
-Some of the portions are very small
Overall, if we can find a good discount, we are happy to have HomeChef!
I ordered 3 meals for two, and this was my experience. #1 Chili-Lime Salmon. The Salmon was good, but was only accompanied by roasted Chayote with a bit of cheese on top. No starch of any kind in the menu, and really not filling enough for dinner. #2 Tex Mex Turkey Stuffed Peppers. Once again, good, but the 1 1/2 Poblano stuffed peppers were the entire dinner, leaving us hungry again. #3 Goat Cheese Encrusted Chicken. Very bland and boring, but with the accompanying roasted potatoes and mashed carrots we did get enough to eat. The recipes were not accurately written, (as in 17 minutes to bake an entire chicken breast?), so timing was dicey, and all of the menus took longer to cook than stated. All in all, not a complete disaster, but there are much better services out there.
I thought having meal selections at my fingertips would make life easier when I returned home from work. No shopping - ah, wonderful! I took a look at the site and was given the impression I could choose the meals. I expected I would be able to look at what the offerings are. Before they allow you to choose your meals, i. E., see what you are buying, you have to select the number of people and then PAY. WHAT? I can think of no other place on the web where you have to pay before you see what you are paying for. I did not complete the registration because of this. After reading some of the reviews, I'm so glad I didn't.
This is only an opinion since I have never ordered from HomeChef before.
I have a fridge full of condiments that don't expire for a long time that I will use over and over again for the next meal.
With HomeChef it doesn't seem like there will be any left overs for the next day.
I spend around $10.00 per meal and usually have left overs for two for lunchtime the next day.
For instance if I buy a tri-tip for $20.00 it usually feeds my husband and I for 3 meals. That's only 6.66 per meal. The remaining $4.00 from the $10.00 buys sides to complete the meal.
Therefore it seems like it would cost me more monthly if I used HomeChef service. Not to mention I would also have to pay their delivery charge.
My household income is $150,000, not a bad income, so I feel that I could afford this program if I ever needed from a convenience standpoint but I don't feel it offers enough value.
I probably haven't crossed all my t's and i's writing this but this is just my opinion...
Marle
I've tried almost every meal service out there, and this one is the WORST. I received terrible customer service when I had an issue with an order, received no notification of the order until it showed up on my credit card, spoke to 3 different rude and unhelpful customer service agents, and was told the supervisors were "in a meeting." Trust me, there are many more services out there with great products, communication, and excellent customer service. STAY AWAY from this one.
I was happy for two weeks... don't have to go to groceries for midpart of the week. Food was okay, cooking instructions simple to follow. On the third week, HomeChef emailed saying: product glitch and delivery went out one day late. By the end of the week, I still have not received anything. Check the FedEx tracking number provided in my email that notified me of the late delivery. FedEx returned a note "pending delivery?" My credit card was charged the previous Friday for this delivery. I have the following weeks delivery until I hear from them. I did and the attitude was a joke, "Sorry, your order was not delivered (they forgot an email was sent out notifying me that my shipment went out a day late) and we see you have paused the service. You can unpause the service later" I am a big joke to them I guess. I'll try Blue Apron!
I am a vegetarian and was not able to see the options before signing up. Once I saw the options I tried to cancel my subscription so I am being held to the first order. I do not really want to eat a cauliflower pita or canned artichokes or spinach egg muffins for dinner. Home Chef should allow you access to the options before you sign up or let you cancel so you do not waste your time and money.
Our weekly deliveries of fresh, perfectly-portioned ingredients have everything you need to prepare home-cooked meals in about 30 minutes.
