I operate a very low volume website on wordpress and with a near $20/m plan it wasn't even capable of using the wordpress control panel. Overloaded shared servers or terrible allocation. I've foolishly used them for nearly 4 years and am extremely glad to have switched. Cheaper and infinitely faster. Never use Hostwinds.
Time from purchase to available was minimal. As a website designer, I know the service level of many different hosts, and so far, Hostwinds has been comparable to the best.

The Hostwinds support team is super responsive and I've only needed to call support once in 4 years and got an excellent help! Good solid hosting company they are!

I have tried the chat line link but it goes nowhere, I then called their 800# only to remain on hold for 20 minutes before giving up. Have sent email but only just, so will see what happens. If they are closed at weekends, I understand but it would be nice were they to announce their business hours.
I am having problems in uploading website and there is not much help on their website on that subject. I was previously with Siteground but changed to this company as they had better rates. Now I know why! I had no problems with the previous hosting firm.

As an update - I did receive a response to my email concerning access to chat lines which suggested clearing cache and trying a different browser, which I did, but to no avail. The following morning I tried phoning and was on hold less than two minutes, when I was able to discuss uploading of a website. The rep I spoke to was very knowledgeable and very helpful and took time to help sort out the problem. Because of this I have increased the star rating to 4 and would have given five had they originally stated an estimated hold time on phone or had a system which enabled them to call back when tech available.
Just known from sns site, some one suggest hostwinds, so i want to try, if i like, i will buy longer time, but the price is a little more than bandwago, and has no discount for new customer like me. The network delay is about 200ms in china, this is not good expirence when i visit Youtobe, so if hostwinds optimize the network delay for customer in china, it will be more nice!

I was surprised to find Hostwinds was so good with customer service - call or email and they're there. The VPS seems good, it's still new to me but there's nothing difficult about it.

I found that hostwinds' interface is not that intuitive like Namecheap, I can't find beginner guide like "how to set up my first domain and hosting" etc

It would have made my review a five star if brief documentation on the setup of WHCM were made available. I did get an email but didn't see it until I had tinkered in Cpanel looking for a way to launch/install WHCM manually.

The purchased IP was blocked after one day of use. Although it can be replaced for free, it took me an afternoon to change 6 IPs before I got a new usable one.

I have had the same web hosting provider since the 1990's and need to find a new one. The services that Hostwinds provides, cPanel in particular, are much more advanced than what I had been using, and even though it is a lot of work, I think it will be worth it. Most of the work has involved migrating from asp.net to php. The chat support is very helpful, but here are some things that they were not able to tell me (for shared business hosting):
• To use the index file in a subdirectory as the 404 error page, put this into the subdirectory's.htaccess file:
ErrorDocument 404 /subdirectory/index.php (the path descends down from public_html).
• To use a server side include, the syntax must be exactly like this (note no space between the initial hyphens and the hash mark; I was going nuts):
<!--#include file="banner.htm" -->
And to use ssi's in regular.htm files, put this into the.htaccess file:
AddHandler server-parsed.htm
• Email aliases are created using forwarders.
I signed up for the "Windows" VPS Managed services and it's been a few days and the service is working GREAT! And since I got the service I only had to contact support and they fixed my server and setup my backup add-on which didn't take long at all. So if you want my opinion the help and service is GREAT! And I will surely recommend them.
