This site has BIG problems when it comes to easy access to group events online. They seem to have some problem with just sending out a link once you request to attend a group. They don't send a link to your email and if you go to the group site there is no link to attend at the time the group is starting... i find it very stressful and the groups I am joining are to help me with stress! I would avoid trying to do things online through Meetup and just wait til people start getting back together in person. This has happened to me with several different groups on Meetup. Are they super careful about security or something? Has anyone else had this problem?
Really appreciate finally finding others' on-target comments about how awful M'up became for organizers, esp after the WeWork takeover.
And to update: Not only no improvement in sight, after it was announced that someone else bought it ~ during covid-19 I had a huge hassle to get my Organizer fees suspended, plus apparently they'll be increased from $60 to $100 for my small group for 6 months once fees are charged again!
Goodbye M'up! Great concept, but run into the ground, utterly disrespectful of the organizers without whom there is nothing. Alternatives exist, such as uGetTogether, so let's hope they become much better platforms that serve us well!
Hi, I asked meetup to make adjustment to my subscription payment since it is an outdoor events group that I took over this year. They declined and asked me to do online events (what?), So I decided to cancel, however it was difficult, on the iPhone and web browser no option to cancel subscription (really), you have to send email to support. Even then they will not cancel but send you and offer with a discount on next renewal fee. What I did find (web search) is that the Android app does allow you to cancel within the App very easily (i do have a spare Android phone luckily). So cancelled using Android platform, and stepped down as organizer using the PC web browser (because I wanted to delete grp), however it didn't allow me to delete group, that option appeared and vanished quickly (new owners). I would recommend to all of you to cancel your subscription on this platform with the current situation I feel this platform is NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE AND MANAGEMENT HAVE NOT REACHED OUT TO ORGANIZERS WITH REAL WORLD SOLUTIONS THEY ARE only after your money, it is not going to spend any money on an new concepts and are definitely not interested in your well being.
They have a nasty loop hole for cancelling service. Currently talking to lawyer, its not about the money. I just hate seeing business take advantage of people. And these people at meetup are doing just that. My lawyer is currently charging $9,000 for a $35 charge. They will be paying all lawyer fees along with the $35. I am all in.
I am an organizer and pay this site every six months. We as a group have had great experiences in the past, but the site is now SO buggy. The last two events I have schedule theres been major bugs/impediments to creating events, announcing events, posting photos - real basic stuff. I hope customer service responds this time, because if not, I'll have to find another platform. My co-organizer has been able to announce events, but does occasionally have problems too - this wouldn't be a problem if customer service were reliable.
$#*! this site. I tryed making a animatronic group but it asked for 99 dollars. I $#*!ing hate this site $#*! them they can suck a $#*!!
I wanted to join for only a month the website won't let you before you know it your sucked in a six month plan. I had a job offer in another city. For unforeseen circumstances I had to end my group. Leaving the group is sketchy too, because they try to keep charging you. I cancelled my card and turn them in as a fraudulent business. This practice of getting money for money for six months and no refund is a scam. The website you pay on is very misleading. Watch when you join. I refuse six months when I'm not even living in the area.
Went downhill dramatically. Been organizer = member also since 2007.
After 2016 lack of help or protection from web master.or AI and NYC group
That ran/owned it responded with ' canned email bots'.
Pushed out good reliable people and do to bad organizers chased
Off good women and men over 35 yrs. Many flakes no show hosts.
Non-user friendly, and dangerous. Cannot post photos, calendar gone
Rvsp all screwy. Expensive and paypal gone?//
The administrators of this site have no problem with the fact that many profiles are fake in that they have no photo or not a photo of themselves or a stolen photo of another famous person. When reported with proof of the identity theft, do nothing to remove the fake profile. When I exposed one member of identity theft, they cancelled MY profile! I believe because identity theft member is a paying member. This site started off with good intentions but unfortunately has been reduced to a money-making machine with no conscience. Also, supports Scientology as they have many groups on Meetup and hold recruitment events disguised as self-help seminars.
I am a leader of a mental health advocacy group, and wanted to use MU to gather people in our rural areas applying as a PAID member. Meet Up rejected my application, but continued to send spam wanting me to join their forum. NO THANKS, you just rejected me, but hey, us people who have a tendency to be more vocal than you "normal" people (ha ha lol sure if you believe it), we are vocal because we get pushed aside at every turn. We are lumped into one type of person and suddenly when you have this horrendous label called "mental illness" that society has hatefully tagged us with, it's scary when your rights quickly deminish and you find yourself pretty much alone. Don't anyone even dare say they MIGHT be depressed otherwise you may have people trying to get you to the hospital. Over two years ago I made the horrendous mistake of "confiding" in my neighbor that i was severely depressed. Prior to that dreadful conversation that I regret having, we shared a wonderful friendship as far as distant neighbors can go including Christmas gift exchange. Now she won't talk to me and peers out windows as if she should be afraid. Can anyone understand how horrible this is to endure when I have a Master's degree and helped many many people in my former career? I'm far more advanced than this neighbor, BUT for the label I have now, she believes she should fear me? I've had a rude awakening as now I know exactly how mentally ill people are treated, and Meet Up is just another business who would rather not have us less desirable types on their forum. I will never associate with Meet Up for any reason or any purpose or any group. Meet Up Discriminates! Does anyone know of a competitor that would allow a mental illness advocacy group on their forum? We really could use the help in getting the word out to folks who have nobody to talk to in rural areas so they are not feeling so alone. Thx
I've been trying to delete my account which appears impossible because it keeps coming back asking me to designate other organizers. I've sent an email to which I receive canned responses but no one to contact directly. There is no number to speak to anyone. This is so incredibly frustrating. If you select "Deactivate Account" it makes you give someone else your group. Any suggestions?
I think what they have going is good. It gives people a place to go to find activities they are interested in or like minded people to join or learn about. The main reason I gave such a low review is because their cost is outrageous. About $90 for 6 months. Granted you get 3 pages it is still outrageous.
Sent messages out for my app idea to help network. I was disabled for sending the same message, i guess? I contacted customer support 5 times over a week and a half- no response. Also they have no number, like a new, money grabbing facebook. Stay away.
In my last invoice as a hoster in Meetup, they increased double amount to pay for the service of six months. They must think we are all coorporate companies and not small business. It is ridiculous how Expensive it is.
I've used meetup for a while and theirs plenty of fake events... ie people organise events but forget to cancel because of circumstances but when you report this to meetup they do nothing! I've seen same event that I turned up to that was cancelled but yet advertised being again advertised for following week... again wasting people's times. Give this app a wide miss and do yourselves a favour!
I submitted an Meetup group for obvious scams. Ie charging a fee and then scheduling multiple events at the same time. Organizer never showed up to any of them. I sent to their *******@meetip.com email and got an auto response and nothing else.
Meetup is only interested in making money from organizers even if they are complete scams. I have been a member since 2016 and it had gotten worse over time.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND SWITCH OVER TO FACEBOOK GROUPS WHICH IS ENTIRELY FREE!
So the past couple years I'd become a bit of a shut-in. I was looking through the Google App Store and I came across this. Decided to take a chance on us a little over a year ago and I don't regret it one bit.
Meetup is basically an app it helps to connect you to public events that may fit in with your particular set of interests. It helps me find a board gaming group in my area that meets up once a month. Once every couple of weeks we have a community clean-up, this popped up on my feed once the trashtag challenge started to become a thing. So it really helps me to get out of the house every now and again and it's connected me to some pretty cool people.
The only reason I put up a four-star review in lieu of a 5 is because of the fact that I do live in a rural area oh, so the fact that I have anything coming up in my feed at all is quite astounding. I would recommend this for anybody looking for activities so long as you live in a slightly more populated area.
If you're curious, go ahead and give it a shot. It's free and it definitely helps if you're looking for something that's out of your daily routine.
This app is absolutely ridiculous. It always freezes and doesn't allow me to do the technical things I need to do as an assistant coordinator for our Meetup group. The past while it didn't allow me to search people or place them into activities. Now, it won't let me post anything on the discussion board but others can. Meetup doesn't have a customer service telephone number at all. I'm considering leaving Meetup bc of the non-stop continuous technical disruptures it causes when I try to technically do something for my events or when I'm not using the app at all and the technical error messages pop up to disrupt my current app uses that have absolutely nothing to do with the Meetup App. Google ITs should have developed it! Ridiculous!
When I joined Meetup in 2008, it was well-done and well-run. I can do code and photography, so I was quickly made an "Assistant Organizer", and life was good for a few years. Then came the "NewMeetup" of 2011, an even-worse "upgrade" in 2013, and the site totally jumped the shark in 2017. Customer service was never very good, but it has become non-existent, and subscription fees keep increasing, while features disappear without notice. All but one of the organizers I met in 2008-2009 have left Meetup, and almost all the newer organizers are business owners who use the site as an advertising platform, for which the subscription fee is a deductible expense. For anyone else, I can't imagine Meetup being of any more use than Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
Most of my experience with meetup groups has been good. I admit that I have not joined very many, but I have met some wonderful people and we have shared some fun experiences. Beware of some power-hungry organizers. You should be picky about the groups you join.
Answer: All Meetup has now is a database of names and a reasonably efficient way of routing new members to your group. But the tools for organizers are wretched and, by design, have gotten worse. This is the only company I've ever seen that doesn't care what the application users, in particular the organizers, want and need. The list of bad changes is very long--and they don't give a damn. And to add insult to injury, they are inept at application development and coding. They pushed out what might be laughably called alpha code and then scrambled to fix issues, saying "it was a work in progress." A major software release should not be a work in progress. Without comment, they remove functionality. For instance, when asked why they removed the ability to post a note on the calendar, their answer was that "only 3% use the feature. So what--now only 3% are pissed? Leaving the feature cost them nothing. I evaluated software from Microsoft and others for a living. Meetup by far is the worst I have ever seen. The "show runners" should be fired and given bad recommendations. And when a competitor comes along that is competent and cares about its users, Meetup will disappear and we'll all celebrate. The organizers en masse don't just dislike the app, they dislike the folks responsible for the mess that Meetup has created.
