Mercari Reviews Summary

Mercari's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, primarily due to issues with product descriptions, return policies, and inadequate customer support. Many users report receiving items that do not match their descriptions or arrive damaged, with little recourse for refunds. Complaints highlight a lack of effective communication from both sellers and the platform itself, leading to feelings of frustration and mistrust. While some customers appreciate the streamlined buying and selling process, the overwhelming sentiment indicates that unresolved issues and high fees overshadow any positive experiences, suggesting a need for improved customer service and clearer policies.

I purchased a tube of Threebond via Mercari. It arrived a few days later, however it had expired 3 years earlier and the sealant had fully cured in the tube and was therefore unusable.
I submit a refund request, but instead of receiving a refund an account credit to be used on the site was issued instead. Over the next few days I tried calling many many times, however after exactly 4 minutes the call drops. Due to no response, I ended up requesting a charge-back from my credit card provider.
This company has terrible service and I would highly recommend avoiding them. If you do plan on using them - take 4 minutes to call them and see if they answer the phone before dropping your call!

Plenty of scammers
March 24, 2020

Be very careful on this site I was just robbed by a Nicole Kristine Creed from Spring Texas. She ordered a lot of merchandise. Which I shipped together and I am new to the site and this nor know this was not allowed This woman took advantage. She also is a seller as well. She claimed to have not received her goods and was refunded her money. So she is keeping the goods and the money

Mercari is quick to take your money, but frozen-molasses-slow to resolve any dispute! I should have checked them out more thoroughly and missed the BBB report showing over 1,180 complaints filed against them. The photo shows the poorly packed and damaged art glass I paid for. Damage reports were filed, but not a word from them! This is my first and last transaction!

A buyer can lie on you and mercari will side with them. I sold a sling bag that was described as a sling bag the person bought the sling bag but gave me a 3 star bc they wanted a backpack even though they never contacted me about that. When I confronted mercari they said I was innocent but bc of their new policy the buyers experience can't be deleted even though lies and illiteracy aren't experiences. They are a dense, unreasonable company. Go elsewhere to sell things.

Buyer Beware
March 17, 2020

Boy, Did I get ripped off, and Mercari's system is designed to cheat buyers and reward dishonest sellers.

Seller and especially Mercari Support really robbed me.

Purchased item, arrived with missing parts. Contacted seller (as required), notified seller. Seller agreed there were parts missing and promised to send out following day.

Seller never sent required parts.

3 days after I revieved first item, Mercari automatically gave seller a 5-star rating, disbursed, fumds, and blocked all future contact to seller.

I contacted Mercari, and CELLINE from Mercari refused to assist me, and said I had agreed to allow Mercari and the Seller to rob me.

Hi Kenneth,

Please be advised that reaching out to Mercari if you have an issue with the item is a user's responsibility. If we don't hear any indication that you're unsatisfied with the item, it will reflect in the system that you don't have any issue with the order and the funds can be released to the seller.

Best,
Celline

Hi Kenneth,

Thanks for writing back. We're sorry to hear that you've encountered this issue.

But please be advised that when you created your account you've agreed to the Terms of Service of the app. This includes your funds being released to the seller when you rate the order after being prompted by the app that once rating the item the sale is final.

I know that this is not a response you'd like but we're unable to issue a return process or a refund in your case.

Best,
Cellineeam Mercari

I never write reviews, but feel compelled to do so. I signed up for Mercari to purchase what looked like a good deal. Well the seller never shipped and I was refunded. I then tried to purchase 2 cell phones on Mercari, but one was a scammer who cancelled bc he wanted payment via Cashapp (not PP where it's secured) and the other mislabeled the item and we mutually cancelled. Well when I finally found a legit seller on Mercari, Mercari suspended my account for suspicious activity without any explanation. I have reached out to support and they have been very inconsiderate to me. All I wanted to do was purchase a good deal with my PayPal account that is very secure. I even sent documentation to Mercari but they said they can't accept it, because it is expired. Now they won't work with me nor explain why they suspended my account. Yet they allow people to sell with ads stating cash app and other sketchy things. I am livid by this. No other selling company has ever harassed or denied me before. None. This is the worst customer support system ever.

Broken Ipad
March 17, 2020

Ipad seemed to work the first 3 days. Then the glass screen came off and the touch screen hardly responded! I bought the warranty, too. No response from the ShiSh Corporation, which has no website, or Mercari! This is a lost I will have to eat!

THEY'LL STEAL YOUR MONEY!
I've been on Mercari for about 8 months. Today I get an email stating my account was closed with a list of "possible" reason. Which non apply to me. I reached out to them by phone *******168 only to get hung up on before getting to speak to someone. Then I email several times before getting an email back. Again, the email is generic and doesn't give me an exact reason for my account is being closed. However the email states that I will have access to my account until all open transactions are complete. Which at this very moment I have one open transaction. I have shipped an item out and waiting for the customer to get it so Mercari can release my funds. Their email also states that I will have access to my account until I remove all my funds from their site. Well after a few hours, I attempt to log on to Mercari and I was denied access. So now I'm not allowed to transfer my money from items I've sold? And what about the open transaction I have? So the buyer is going to get the item they purchased and I won't get paid for it? I'm PISSED! Mercari has some nerve! I'm going to leave this review any and EVERYWHERE I can about them! I'm truly disgusted with them! This is clearly them stealing from me and any other customer they've done this to in the past, currently doing this to or plan to do this to in the future!

Scammed buy buyers
March 14, 2020

I sold 16 items on Mercari. 3 of which were a nightmare. Customers claim items are not as described and want a refund, but never send the items back for returns. Customers can request returns for no reason "just because", and Mercari honors it! It isn't right. Stay away, lean towards Ebay and Poshmark where you are protected. Mercari doesnt seem to care about sellers, only about their "cut" when you make a sale.

Now I'm scared...
March 13, 2020

Well, I just started with Mercari about two weeks ago. I had downloaded their app over two years ago, but had always sold on Poshmark. Poshmark was doing kind of the same thing with the buyers claiming the items were damaged or not what they ordered, and they would always give them a refund under any circumstance, even if you had proof showing them that they were lying. But now, thankfully, they actually listened to their sellers and will let the person keep the item, they get a refund, and then the seller still gets their payment.

I think Mercari should be a little more like Poshmark in this way... like, actually listen to the people who are making them all this money? It might help drive up sales just a little bit, don't ya think?

I'm really worried... I sold a few items on Mercari in the short two weeks I have been listing items, and so far, guess what? No ratings yet... I'm worried they're just going to do exactly what everyone is saying here... ask for a refund and they'll just give it to them WITHOUT paying the seller? It is false advertisement to say, "Hey, if you sent this item as described, you are guaranteed a payment." Well, how do you prove that? Pictures right? Because our phones have automatic time stamps that have the date and time on them, that should be enough, right?

I really wish I would've read the reviews before I got started with them... At least I still have my Poshmark account, but they charge WAY too much for shipping and 20 percent is awful, which means people overcharge for their items to make up for the loss in shipping and their fees, and the shipping cost seems to be rising exponentially. Why can't we just have an honest company out there?

I guess for now I'll just stick with Poshmark if Mercari rips me off, but be certain, I will submit a report to the BBB. Ugh!

I have decided to list a few items for sale on Mercari. Ended up with more questions than answers with the latter being none.

Why oh why I can't price my item at say, $24.99 but only at $25? Why can't I be informed that images have to be square? Have learned the hard way when they appeared chopped off. Went in to edit and when adding a new revised picture, was unable to move it around. Ended up deleting all pics & adding all of them again. Such a waste of time.

Why oh why am I requested to enter shipping weight and measurements when I offer a free shipping? How in the world does Mercari calculate my shipping if they don't know where it goes? Why am I bullied into using Mercari shipping when I want to use my own? I believe the protection is all the same, and I wanted to use Pirate Ship but no such luck. Last year I had a lone sale on Mercari, used Paypal without problems. Scroll up to 2020 and there is no Paypal link in sight.

Why am I unable to get in touch with Mercari, either by email or phone? Why do I have to google all the contact info? Not that I care as I deleted my listings and said good bye. STAY AWAY FROM SELLING ON MERCARI. There are better choices.

Really great app if things go smoothly, the main issue is that if your tracking isn't scanned and it doesn't state it's been delivered, you can be left in limbo forever as the buyer can state it was never delivered. Also, if you misjudge your weight at time of drop-off for an item you sold. You have to; cancel the sale > change the weight of shipping > relist the item > have buyer pay for it again > and then you can ship it. It is a sure way to lose a buyer since it requires so many steps. It would be nice to have a function that can change weight regardless of it is shipped or not as issues can arrive for shipping; larger box required, more packaging protection, etc.

Order asset of coffee mug, paid for them and the seller never shipped them. Seller unresponsive. Contacted customer service 2x and both times told me to wait, they were no help. I had to contact my credit card company to get my money back.
It was my first time and my last with Mercari.

No negative reviews are permitted without having received items and hence the glowing reviews are inaccurate. Mercari is unwilling to kick off sellers who are potential scammers at worse or who are completely uncommunicative at best. Mercari reps would not answer basic questions about transactions. I have spent way too much time trying to get simple questions answered from your company and from the seller. If the seller had simply responded to my first message that she had made an error and that she didn't have the product, I would have gotten my refund and gone my way. Neither ebay nor Amazon treats customers they way your company does.

Not great!
March 6, 2020

I just sold my first item on Mercari. I thought it would be a better option than POSHMARK because Mercari charges 10% as opposed to Poshmark's 20%. When I was listing the item I was not asked about where I wanted funds deposited. It wasn't until I made the sell that I was told my funds were now available to make another purchase. I had too look through SELLERS options to find out about direct deposit or InstaPay which apparently in one I have to provide my ID and account and routing number, NO FREAKING WAY! Or through InstaPay which will charge you $2 for every transaction. Not feeling the seller vibe anymore. I now feel for the sellers on these apps.
