Mercari's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, primarily due to issues with product descriptions, return policies, and inadequate customer support. Many users report receiving items that do not match their descriptions or arrive damaged, with little recourse for refunds. Complaints highlight a lack of effective communication from both sellers and the platform itself, leading to feelings of frustration and mistrust. While some customers appreciate the streamlined buying and selling process, the overwhelming sentiment indicates that unresolved issues and high fees overshadow any positive experiences, suggesting a need for improved customer service and clearer policies.

I tried to purchase a used ipad mini 6 from Mercari. The site has intentionally posted a fictitious listing for a new Ipad mini 6 for $ 366.00. This listing is too good to be true, but thats ok. When I clicked on purchase, the site did not ket me know the listing has an issue, instead it made me register my details, address and the whole works, makes me do my email verification and after all of this work, it lets me know there isan issue with the listing and they are trying to get it resolved with the seller. I can bet my socks that this is a bait fake listing to get more users to register with their platform. I thought may be give them one more chance, and I decided to purchase another used iPad, and by now I am already registered. On clicking purchase, it prompts me to make an offer on the item I have selected to purchase, so I selected and clicked on a preset 10 % off button. Then it asks me for my credit card information, that was unnecessary, but anyway I gave the card number and full billing address etc, even though offer is yet to be accepted. However The agony continues. Then it says it will place 2 small purchases on my credit card to verify card. It makes me verify those 2 amounts, and after all of this elaborate drama, finally it submits my offer with a heads up that my card will be charged the moment the seller accepts my offer. So I wait, And wait, and wait some more hours. Then I continue waiting. The site does not let me know if my offer is accepted or rejected. I am left in a limbo because I cannot purchase the item from elsewhere because this offer may get accepted and my card will get charged and the item was un returnable. I still have not heard back from them after 3 days.
Anyway after 3 days of waiting I assumed my credit card won't get charged and I went back to a trusted site like my favorite Ebay, made a simple, fast purchase of a very reasonably priced used Ipad Mini 6, with just a few clicks. Wow, what a relief to shop on Ebay.
MERCARI IS A TOTAL CON JOB. I WON'T GO ANYWHERE NEAR MERCARI.COM EVER AGAIN!
I recently purchased a stuffed animal that came with a pungent perfume smell. Although it had tags, it was not new or even gently used. I asked to return and was told that "odor" cannot be determined from the requested pictures and the request was denied. I was not allowed to leave a review for the seller, because according to other buyers, Mercari won't publish negative reviews. BEWARE this site. The sellers are not vetted.
Mercari really does try their best, putting their best foot forward in offering discounts, lower prices, from their merchants than larger mainstream competitors such as ebay. They do not have as much variety and selection, but they do offer good perks for their customers. As a buyer, Mercari holds the seller highly accountability for what they sell. They favor the buyers in that the buyers can freely cancel before shipment, and sellers can freely cancel without negative feedback. In fact, sellers are immune to negative feedback by the very structure that Mercari sets, in favor of their sellers. An unfair advantage, for the generally lower prices offered to their buyers.
Bought a DVD series off Mecari. I did not leave a review yet so I could watch some of DVD before review. Within 3 days Mecari reviews it then tells me I cannot get my money after review. Dvd was supposed to be new. Closed my account. Tried to add pictures but it wouldn't go through for some reason.
Please, Please do not trust Mercari! I bought an expensive pair of shoes that were blush / pink in the picture and was not described as any other color. When I received them they were very dark gray ( mud colored). I went through the proper channels of sending photos to ask for a return. I was denied a return and they gave the seller a five star rating. I was not allowed to rate the seller myself to warn others. This place is a scam! Beware!
What a joke it's impossible to return something even though it doesn't fit and description was not accurate. Do not buy from this website
I was mailed a completely different product than what I ordered. Even after sending dozens of photos, Mercari acted is if I was not able to prove that I received the wrong item, even after I created side by side comparisons and photos showing very clearly that what I ordered and what I received were two completely different products. I wasted $114 and will NEVER use again!
All of these Chinese companies are taking the western world to the bank with their cheap products! I ordered a bedding set a year ago. Never received and showed sitting in Bulaliccadan somewhere for 6mos. Customer service replied once with "We are researching" and never answered me again.
My fault! They know we westerners are suckers for cheap goods! Never again!
I've never had an online buying experience as maddening and generally unethical as with Mercari. I purchased what I thought was a painting for $200. A beat-up, moldy cardboard print arrived. I immediately contacted the seller, no reply. I thought, fine, they must be out, I'll begin the return process as this product was not worth $2 let alone $200. I had to answer a questionnaire as to why I wanted to return this item vs here's the information you need for the return. The information then goes to a caseworker (some random person, possibly at lunch also texting with friends, working on the side for Mercari) to determine the viability of the claim? I thought, OK, whatever, this is not what I thought I was ordering, they'll see that and the return will be processed. Instead, I received a "the seller met their criteria and we cannot issue a refund" notice. I was genuinely taken aback by this response. This piece of garbage has actual mold on it, for $196! Essentially, Mercari is a gambling site. If you don't get what you ordered, too bad. I then begin a long string of emails with random people at Mercari with various titles communicating in the same infuriatingly rehearsed manner "We really appreciate your understanding in this manner and we're sorry it didn't work out for you". On a few occasions, it was recommended that I participate in an unethical reselling of this product, mold and all, to someone else through Mercari? Just pass the problem along? As I said to one of the many people (who was probably watching television during the email exchange), "this experience is not unlike being aggressively cut off in traffic, the other driver mouthing the words "I'm sorry" whilst simultaneously giving you the finger. Mercari is an AWFUL place to deal with. I truly feel like I was stolen from, in plain sight.
People who work for customer service are def not going extra mile to assist customers. I was long time loyal customer and will be canceling my account
Mercari sucks. Customer service sucks. They don't care about any concerns. They dismiss you. Sellers are jackasses at least some are.
I ordered something I'm giving for a gift so was time sensitive. After not hearing anythjng for four days from seller and no shipping notifications, I cancelled order and had to find it elsewhere. Overall, super hassled and Merceri will not let you leave a review unless you actually buy it.
I've been using Mercari for less than a month to sell stuff I have around the house, and I have nothing good to say about them. The most recent frustration was trying to list an unopened derma roller. It was deleted because it's "prohibited." I searched their site, and other sellers have derma rollers for sale. I tried reposting it with the same language as other posts, and it was immediately deleted. I got an email telling me to refrain from trying to list it again. So a real person was actively watching my posts and kicked it off. If they prohibited ALL derma rollers (why they would be prohibited is beyond me), then fine. I am angry at both at their inexplicable decision that this item is "prohibited" and their inconsistent enforcement of rules.
Be aware, there is ZERO communication with Mercari, you can only email them and you get automated messages. They closed my account with no warning, they later stated I was selling an unauthentic item. The item was in fact authentic,I have been a Mercari seller for over 4 years with excellent reviews. They avoid customers, just be alert and never keep money in your balance account with them. They will shut you done without reason or validating the reason. Get a ground line or live chat agent Mercari. Move over to Poshmark they are available for their customers.
Mercari is an easy to use app that offers great deals if you get the right seller. Unfortunately you MUST read reviews of sellers to know if you have a trustworthy one. If they have an abundance of Mercari automatic reviews...do not purchase. These are often left because the buyer has had a problem and it has not been solved within the 3 day window for customer reviews so Mercari reviews and closes the transaction. Giving the illusion of a 5 star seller and leaving the buyer with a faulty or incomplete item. Absolutely NO consequences for the seller if they choose to simply wait out the 3 day window. I have had some excellent transactions as a buyer and some bad ones. If you have a problem it is extremely difficult to contact Mercari and then satisfaction is not guaranteed. If you wish to buy here I recommend you do your homework on the seller before making a purchase.
My account was restricted because Mercari claimed I had multiple accounts. That's a lie. I filed a complaint with the CA Attorney General's office and Mercari claimed "potential sale of counterfeit goods" which was another lie. Then Mercari claimed that I failed to provide a government-issued photo ID, which is another lie. At the end, Mercari just kept my money.
I listed a Coach wallet my mom gifted me from the Coach outlet. I was trying to get a whole $15 for it. I still had the tag and two little care packets that come with it. They flagged it as "non-authentic" bc I didn't have her receipt for the originally $30 wallet. It was also the only "designer" item on my account. They removed my listing, accused me of selling a counterfeit item, and wasted my time over $15. I've now deleted my account and app.
I bought a wall lamp that was defective and unusable. When I contacted the company they said it was more than 48 hrs so too bad. So I am stuck with a useless lamp.
Stay away from this marketplace. As a 20+ year ecommerce seller on different marketplaces, I find Mercari is the worst. Its agents act like scammers. They said things conflicting with each other, and not to honor the original promise. It does not seem to have standard rules to follow. Agents would came up with anything to make you go away. Then they find a dozen different bogus reasons not to pay sellers. Fortunately I had only one sale being scammed, my only sale. So bye bye Mercari.
I only left 1 star because 0 wasn't an option. Purchased a pair of sandals and after two weeks of No status updates I reached out to customer service. They told me they would "reach out" to the seller. Weeks went by, and after a month a messaged again to only receive the same response. I finally canceled my order and after went to leave a review for the seller to only find out that she had canceled/closed her Mercari account 7 months prior. Now if I could find that out, why couldn't this company who hosts individuals find that out and inform me to cancel, or just not allow the purchase to happen from the beginning. So, I canceled my order and the amount that was returned to me was a fraction of the purchase. I again emailed customer service and have yet to receive a reply regarding an explanation as to why my full amount wasn't refunded. It just seems like they don't know what they're doing like children are running this company.
Answer: Please contact the Federal Trade Commision and Internet Crime Complaint Center. (IC3). It is illegal to keep anyones money! The IRS would like to know where all this money is also? Whos paying taxes on it? FTC will get your money! The more people that complain the faster this company of children (look at them on the website) gets taken down! The faster we all get paid!
Answer: DID YOU GET YOUR MONEY BACK?
Answer: Good question. Poshmark charges a ridiculous $6.99 shipping fee for everything, regardless of weight. Only thing is, you cannot mail anything for less than $2.66 but I see your point
Answer: Hi there, When you purchase an item on Mercari, we hold payment to your seller until you confirm you've received your order and it is as described in the listing. You just need to rate your seller in order for payment to be released. If you don't submit a seller Rating within 3 days of receipt of the item, or if we can confirm delivery through the items tracking information, well assume the transaction was successful and release payment to your seller.
