ModCloth has a rating of 2.0 stars from 301 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers complaining about ModCloth most frequently mention customer service, return policy, and store credit problems. ModCloth ranks 1742nd among Women's Clothing sites.
I really really wanted to give modcloth a try because they do allow these unique designers to showcase their products (most of them looked so interesting that I couldn't wait to get my hands on them) so I ordered from them several times and here is my experience:
1. It has become apparent that some of the products are definitely not worth the money. There were several products that I saw on their websites that I wanted to buy but ended up buying from somewhere else cheaper(exactly same products directly from designer or through other online platforms if you are willing to look for it).
2. I ordered 3 pairs of shoes from them. The common issue with modcloth is that the pictures must have undergone some editing because the colors are ALWAYS different. I returned two of them because of the colors. They were different enough for me to SPEND money to ship them back (I was told that I would have to pay for my shipping if I returned them). The last one I kept because I did want a pair of navy colored shoes but I regreted after wearing it for a day because for a pair of low heels it was extremely uncomfortable (definitely not a quality product of worth)
3. For international shoppers:
I moved to Canada. At this point I buy a lot of stuff online because some of the brands have no retailers in Canada. I have not experienced a lot of issues with duty (crossing the border) with stuff I've bought from other places. However with modcloth (I have no idea why) I get charged almost 30% duty.
At this point. After all my frustrations (6 purchases and 600 dollars later) I think I am going to give up on this website.

I just received my Sailorette of the Seas Jeans, they are so cute and the fit is perfect. I'm 5'9" 145lbs and bought the size 29, they were long enough... Yay!

I returned a very expensive dress in april this year that coasted 250 dollars and they still haven't given my money back.
DO NOT SHOP THERE! They lie and refuse to refund.

For some reason, the dress is just not happening in the mall. I never see cute, vintage, well-fitting dresses in my size that don't cost an arm and a leg. The stuff out there is just bleh. Then, somehow, doing a search online for "vintage, plus sized" I came across ModCloth and BOOM! Revelation! I am no longer frumpy, bumpy, boyish, ill-fitted and colorless. My new mojo image is feminine but strong, witty, bright, fun, curvy and sassy! People say "I want to raid your closet". The funny thing is that even my regular wardrobe looks fresh now that I have these awesome ModCloth go-to dresses. I would say there is not a day that goes by without a compliment. And, heck, that's nice. Absolutely everything I have bought (4 cardis and about 22 dresses) fits perfectly, launders well and looks amazing!
ModCloth even sent me a coupon code to use on a future purchase because I hit buy a little too quickly one time before entering a discount code. So, I am good with the customer service side, and happy as a clam with my gorgeous wardrobe! Opening a ModCloth box is just too wonderful. If folks are scared about buying online, please don't be! Read the measurements carefully, and the other customer reviews, understand the material and care required, and, don't buy before you double check the order.
I suppose if you don't know what looks good on you, you are better off at the mall. But, if you want to save money and time and have something not every teenager is buying at Target, shop ModCloth. You sassy gal, you!

It was my very first order frm this website. I got the Shipment notice the very next day I placed my order. And while waiting I started reading reviews from other websites including here. When I read abt their shipment delay I was really concerned. But I got my order on time, infact I placed the order on a saturday and the clothes were delivered on Thursday.
Abt the quality, it was ok. I feel the price I payed was huge. Shops like Macy's may sell tht for the price I payed. Well, the most imp thing was the size. Even though the website said, true to size I felt the dress I bought was very large. So I called customer service and told the same. They asked me to go for a quick exchange If I wish to buy a smaller size. So its like they placed a new order for a size smaller and for the original dress I had to return back for a full refund. The new dress arrived this Monday which I felt was a very quick shipment, considering the fact that they did not even charge for my shipment.
I believe other bitter experiences mentioned here, are mainly coz they might not have the items ordered instock.
But, will i recommend this to others? Probably now, mainly because I felt items are too costly. Also people who are fit conscious should gamble here.
P: S The new dress arrived was also not that great fit for me. And it was a size 'S'. Cant go lower than tht.:)
Hope this helps

DO NOT BUY FROM MODCLOTH! I've ordered from them multiple times and up until now have not seemed to learn my lesson. You cannot cancel an order unless it is within a 60 MINUTE time frame. That's right, one whole hour! The order hadn't even been processed yet and was still "pending" a few hours later when I tried to cancel my order, and they claimed it was impossible. So I waited (a long time) for my package to come just so I could send it back for a full refund. WHICH I was told could take anywhere from 4-8 weeks to process. Meaning that my money with modcloth would be tied up for at least a month, maybe two! Not to mention, I returned my order because I found the item I wanted (which was out of stock on modcloth) on the website of the actual manufacturer. Which leaves me with the question, why are we ordering things from modcloth when we can usually get the item directly from the producer of the product for a CHEAPER price. Lastly I will state that the quality of the items I get from modcloth are typically very poor and highly overpriced. They tend to forget to mention when a dress doesn't have a lining and therefore is completely see-through. They also don't mention that the buttons are sewed on so poorly that an 80 dollar dress will only have it's original buttons for a few wears (if that). DO NOT BUY!

I contacted customer care three times about an order because I was afraid the stylish surprise would be oversold and look at that, it was. It also took them 4 business days to tell me that, when the 2nd time I contacted customer service, the woman told me my items were ALL accounted for and ready to ship--which was FALSE. I can't even begin to explain how frustrated I am because this has happened to me so many times when shopping at ModCloth. I've been a customer for over 8 years now and it's absurd that in EIGHT YEARS they still have not been able to fix the problem of overselling items. I am so furious. I don't care that I was refunded, I want to receive the items that I was confirmed to have ordered. And now I will have to wait another six months or however long for it to come back, and I'm sure this will happen then as well. On top of this entire fiasco, they send me 10% off, which is basically a slap in the face. Unidays gives me 15% off my ModCloth order every time! I won't even use the 10% because it is essentially worthless. If I buy something for $50, I get $5 off, wow. I don't want a coupon, I want the items I ordered. $5 is not nearly worth the inconvenience and annoyance I have endured with this order.
I'm getting to the point with ModCloth where it's such a frustrating experience that it's not even worth the clothes. Half the time I don't end up getting them anyway.
Tip for consumers:
if it's low in quantity it's probably sold out.

Yikes! I should have looked for complaints first. I didn't think I need to, this kind of thing doesn't happen outside of swapmeets. At least swapmeets are conspicuous about returns. And, of course you see what you're buying before you buy it. Not the case here! A one-star review is generous. And apparently, you will get charged for returning items that turn out to be embarrassing to wear, quality and size wise. I bought what looked like cute clothes at regular price and "final sale". An all around cringey and horrid experience. I thought for a moment customer service was somehow joking when I contacted them about my order. How this is an operating, respectable business, I am afraid to know. There is no store credit for all the things I purchased. And, this was my first purchase ever. The clothes won't fit my slender 12 year old niece. If she was maybe 8, yes. One item would possibly fit if she were 10 again. Not hyperbole. It's like the size charts are intentionally incorrect? Why set up a "final sale" with sizing charts if you're not trying to rip people off? Save yourself from an ambush obstacle course that will trip you up on any of the many issues not normal for respectable retail. This place needs to liquidate to a low price point children's clothing supplier (ages 6 - 10), sell its assets, close up shop, and stop taking people's hard-earned money. Please know I'd rather try my luck at Walmart where at least I know if I can't wear something because of defective sizing or quality, I won't be robbed. Do you own a sewing machine and a pet? If they won't take your defective, unwanted, unwearable items back you can try making a sweater for your small to possibly medium size dog. Or a couple of teacup pooches. A cat? Run the other way and support another business that won't be this bad. Pay $142 for something that you like and can wear. Tell your friends. Spare me the customer service "sadly, no", "sadly, we" responses, ModCloth.

ModCloth is great when you first discover it. They have a huge selection of clothing and accessories and almost everything looks really cute.
Then you start ordering. I'm basing my review on MULTIPLE transactions and not just one purchase. It's important to really look at images online to get an idea of what fabric is like. Colors online are often misleading and very different in person. Most of the items are quite overpriced, especially when the item arrives and the fabric is disappointingly cheap. I have no problem paying more for a dress if the quality is better.
I've also been burned in the sense that after ordering an item, I did some research into the brand and was able to discover it cheaper at another retailer. Since then, I've always tried to find an item I want cheaper at another site and most of the time I do. (Sometimes the mark-up can be as much as $20).
It's not all bad though. I've gotten a few dresses that I was very happy with, but they were all pretty pricey. There's pretty much no one website where you can find this great selection of vintage and vintage-inspired styles. I think the great thing about Mod is that they have things for many price-points.
As another side note, I ordered many items with the free "savvy saver" shipping and shipping took about a week. I then ordered another item with the $8.00 standard ground shipping and that package arrived literally one day earlier. It's not worth it at all to pay for shipping if you're not in a rush.
Customer service has always been a breeze and I've never had a problem returning anything. Returns are always prompt and they don't take a long time to return funds to your account. It usually only takes 2-3 days after they receive it. I called customer service once and the CSR was really nice and helpful.
I don't want to completely discourage people from shopping with ModCloth because I've found a couple really great dresses, but you need to be smart about it and do research to avoid big disappointments.

It seems that most of the negative reviews are coming from customers outside the US having to deal with extra customs costs. As a US customer, none of those are applicable. Their customer service has been fantastic and my overall experience is very positive. I love the selection of unique and quirky items they carry. However, I deducted a star simply because of how long it takes them to process returns and exchanges. It takes about a week (possibly more depending on the speed of the shipping source) for them to receive it, but THEN it can take another SEVERAL weeks to process. When youve put in to exchange for a different size and/or color, this can be very frustrating because by the time theyve processed it, the particular size/color you requested may have sold out. But even if this isnt a concern because youre just doing a regular return, it seems like it takes forever to see that refund come in. The other reason I deducted a star is because they dont run sales very much and are chintzy with their coupons. Most other retailers I shop with are very generous with the amount of sales they run and the frequency and amount of coupons they send out, but its a rare occasion to receive a ModCloth coupon. So, they get four stars for their quality items and their great customer service, but they lose a star for their minuscule sales and coupons, and for taking about the same amount of time to process returns and exchanges it takes to watch paint dry.

Hi, Morgan. Thank you for taking the time to leave this review. Please rest assured that I will share your feedback regarding returns and exchanges with the appropriate team! I know that exchanges, in particular, can be a frustrating wait. There is an option available called a "quick exchange", which can certainly speed up the process! It involves re-ordering and returning, and our Customer Care team would assist with that, to ensure you receive the same price on the new item, as you did on the original. It is definitely a good option, if you're on a time crunch for a new size/color! Our team can also give more details, if you'd like to reach out to them at modcloth.com/help.
Bought 2 shirts, both the same size. One was very noticeably much smaller than the other. How can this be?

Thanks for sharing your frustration, Celeste! Because we carry items created and designed by many different vendors, there are times where the sizing varies from item to item. If you're ever in doubt and want to be sure, our amazing team of ModStylists are here to offer advice and take flat measurements of any product we carry for you! You can find more information on them here: https://www.modcloth.com/modstylists
I think the concept isn't that unique, modcloth is sort of like an affordable Anthropologie but online only. And Tracy Reese makes a crossover so my comparison stands; D. Modcloth features vintage/retro/indie designer clothing, apparel and accessories for the fashion conscious and possibly for the lookbook crowd. Generally their clothing are very budget friendly and the designers they feature do have unique designs. They also have a program where buyers can vote on potential designs where winning ones get sold! Things become out of stock quickly but based on community demand, they restock which I think is a smart tactic for not having excesses.
They've overhauled their shipping to free over $50 which is easy to obtain with free returns, except on final sale items (pay attention). I ordered a dress and I have to agree with some other reviewers that even if they have no involvement in the production of their items, they have some responsibility in encouraging the featuring or not featuring of designers or companies that keep making low quality products. For example, the dress I ordered I would rate had very thin material (it was around $99 originally, on sale for $60) and I was not pleased with the drape because of that. It was constructed with fairly good quality, passable I'd say (I was afraid of ripping it when trying it on) and the quality of the material itself with again, fair. That being said, if the industry standard is in importing cheap materials and poor workmanship then no one is going to go out of their way to make less of a profit. If everyone's product is shoddy and around the same price range, then the consumer doesn't really have a choice but to accept it. In that sense, it's not their fault - but in another sense, they can do something about it.
I like the range of items on their site - they're very whimsical and downright adorable. I like the vibe of modcloth overall and it's a great alternative to what's available right now.

I think their clothes is super cute until you wash them... or even dry clean them. Then they fall apart. Dedefinitely not worth the price.

I've been shopping since 2011. Over the years I've spent thousands of dollars. I made it a ritual to check the website almost daily (Swoon and Noon and Nine!) because they would always have such delightful, fun, interesting and appealing items every day.
Since the merger especially, but even before that, the quality and experience has definitely gone down hill. I'm not going to complain about something I ordered not fitting me right. That's just what happens when you shop online. Quality of clothing varies and fit can also vary widely. That's not ModCloth's fault.
But the quality of the overall shopping experience as a whole has declined: $70 for dresses that used to cost like $50 (I'm looking at you Coach Tour), daily updates feature like 6 products instead of the dozen or so we used to get, and the updates now are just... so drab and uninspired and depressing and uninteresting. It boggles the mind. ModCloth used to be FRESH! And Unique! And I feel like the clothing they select now is not as cute, interesting, or unique as it once was.
They've also started slowly discontinuing long-time favorites like the Charter School Cardigan, Coach Tour dresses, Soda Shop dresses, etc. They discontinued home items which were so much fun and if they carried bedspreads in larger than Queen I might have actually bought some.
Now it's easier and more exciting for me to just get the names of the brands they order from and go directly to the designer to get stuff whenever I can. I can usually find additional cute and exciting items right from the designer rather than waiting weeks to get excited about anything ModCloth shows up on their New Arrivals.
Customer service remains a positive experience for me. I've had a lot of assistance over the years and everyone has been super.
What used to be my go-to clothing store, where I exclusively bought ALL of my entire wardrobe, is now just a disappointing, sad mainstream store with an uninspired and disjointed product catalog. There are still some really adorable unique gems on the site, but finding them now is fewer and farther between. Less money spent on the ridiculous photoshoots and more money invested in buyers might be a good idea.

Very poor customer service. Stay away from them. I ordered an item $44.99 + $7 shipping. The item arrived, however, I was not pleased at all because the material looks so cheap, I would not even bother to wear it. I asked for a return, they would not allow me, according to them the item I bought clearly stated that it cannot be returned or exchange. It was the first time I heard of such policy. Anywhere I buy whether the item is on sale or not it can always be returned. As the saying goes "Customer is always right".
Anyway, a day day after I requested for refund, I decided to check back on the item at their website and found out it was listed half the price of what I paid for at $19.99. I called them and they issued me a a store credit of $25. They should have agreed to issue store refund of $55.26 instead, since they sold the item to me twice the price. Anyway, realising that it's better to get something back than none at all, I placed 3 items immediately in lieu of the $25 store credit and was expecting a free shipping, since they owe me explanation of why I paid double for the first item and they do not want to issue any refund or return at all. If I have ordered all items at one time (the item I was returning and the 3 items I bought as store credit) I should have only paid 1 time shipping. Nevertheless, again, they don't want to give me free shipping. About 15 minutes after I placed my order, I decided to change 1 item to another item totally the same kind but different design which I added to my wish list, according to them they cannot do it any more. Their customer service representative stated: "Once an item is ordered it cannot be changed any more." Very, very, very poor customer service, 15 minutes after placing order, YOU CAN NEVER CHANGE IT AT ALL! Totally not fair! STAY AWAY FROM THEM! Beware!"

I had a coat in my cart, $204.00, and was waiting for a sale. I found out on Tuesday from my daughter that she got an Email that coats were on sale on Monday for 15%. I never got the email about the sale but kept getting emails to hurry and buy the coat because I left something in the cart. The next day I got one about shoes being on sale, they were running weekly special each day. I communicated back and forth with customers service and asked if they would honor the sale even though it was Tues. They offered what they thought was a generous 10%. I said you mean to tell me you cannot honor the 15% for one day. Every excuse, the answer was no. He gave me a coupon code for 10%. On Wed. I ordered the coat as a present, mainly because it was the last one with the wonderful gift of 10%. Now today the I got an email offered 20%. Ya I called back an got this sweet as sugar girl on the phone that would not make the adjustment. I asked for a manager and sugar said well good luck hope she can help. I was put on hold for a long time so sugar could tell the manager the story. The manager comes on to act like she knows nothing about the situation but as we spoke I know she had it relayed to her. I asked if she could give me credit in my account for when I buy something else, the answer was... you can give two discounts on the same purchase. She said I could send the coat back, of course I have to pay shipping and they I would have to order another one today at the 20% off. Okay how is that saving anything. Would you not think if they gave me a credit in my account, that I would buy something else and spend more money. You can call any store and they would be happy to help their customers, Travel Smith, Penney's, Macys. NOT MODCLOTH
Tip for consumers:
Most of the clothes are nice that my daughter or myself ordered are nice but the service is bad.
Date of experience: November 13, 2015
I've been ordering from ModCloth since I was in high school and I'm absolutely appalled at how bad it's gotten.
This past Black Friday, I placed an order for almost $300 worth of items, at about $150 thanks to Black Friday sales. Didn't hear a single peep out of them for nearly a month, until the week before Christmas, I get an email saying my order was refunded.
I ask customer service why this happened and I get ignored for two days.
I@ them on Twitter and get an immediate response to my customer service request -- and blocked by them on Twitter.
They tell me the order was returned to them so it was processed and refunded-- all except the $10 I paid for shipping.
I never got a shipping email. From all accounts, it looks like the order never left their building. It probably got lost somewhere and when they found it, instead of express shipping it to me AS THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE, they processed it as a return and decided to keep my shipping.
Nearly four weeks and I was not contacted about this once. I was not asked if I still wanted the order. Nothing. Not a peep.
I am understandably angry about this, but I am especially angry to find out that they then went and sold all the items in my order and now everything is unavailable.
Why does this make me extra angry?
BECAUSE I AM STILL GETTING ADS FOR THOSE ITEMS.
Two weeks later, and I am still getting ads telling me to buy the items back full price.
Now I have Christmas gifts that will be late to people. I tell them they need to refund my shipping and they do-- as a courtesy, they tell me.
You never shipped my stuff in the first place. You did not complete your end of the bargain. And now Customer Service Manager Aaron has the gall to tell me, "oh what a bummer?"
I have no faith in this company anymore. They clearly don't care about their customers. I can only assume this whole endeavor was just to make a quick buck by turning around and selling the items I ordered at full price. I've worked in e-commerce for over ten years and every company, from the smallest to worldwide will ALWAYS contact customers if a package didn't go out when it was supposed to. Not return it to the shelf and sell it, while pocketing the shipping.
The gall.
Tip for consumers:
Don't buy from them unless you want your time wasted and your money stolen.

ModCloth has amazing selection and all, but the international shipping is complete garbage.
Before ordering, I KNEW that ModCloth had COD (cash on delivery) shipping for the 3-4 day shipping option. Since I wanted my purchase to come faster since it was for an event, I chose that option.
I had done my research and from the reviews I had seen people were generally charged an additional $52-$75 Canadian upon delivery for purchases totaling $150-$250. Since my purchase was $116 I expected to be charged slightly less. I was wrong.
I chose the 3-4 day delivery method which is $26.97 CAD because I wanted my purchase to be here faster for an event I'm going to. My total purchase was only $116.96 INCLUDING shipping, but somehow I ended up having to pay an additional $52 for COD. And since the UPS deliveryman didn't have change on him, and I didn't want to have to go to the UPS warehouse myself to pick it up, I ended up giving him $60 instead. (Yes, I know. I wasted the extra $8 myself. That is NOT ModCloth's fault- I just didn't want to go through the hassles of picking up the package myself from the UPS warehouse the next day.)
As much as I LOVE their clothing, I can honestly say I will never be buying from MC again. Ever.
