Ulta has a rating of 2.8 stars from 532 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers complaining about Ulta most frequently mention customer service, credit card, and order online problems. Ulta ranks 14th among Skin Care sites.
Over the past few years, Carolin Trails has been surrounded by controversy about their wilderness therapy program death where a young teenager named Alec Lansing lost his life while camping at their program. Which shocked every parent whose kids were in that program for treatment.
I was online adding to my cart when my app glitches. I noticed my shopping cart had suddenly been cleared. So I closed app and opened thinking it would reset. Nope. So I added items back into my cart. Then I purchased. I receive 2 emails saying 2 orders were placed. Both were duplicate. So, immediately I texted customer service (within 5 min) to have them cancel 1st order. I explained my situation and was told by 6 different people they couldn't cancel my order. All of them assured me they could help, wasted my time just to tell me their bs system wouldn't allow them to cancel my order that hasn't been shipped. I have been a customer for years and they just lost one due to bs policies and incompetent agents.
I have found some really great items at Ulta for a good price, but also have bought some highly rated items that turned out crappy. Be sure what you buy, before you buy, is easily returned if you are unhappy with it. And be careful not to spend too much. Many of their items are cheaper elsewhere.
Listen to your valuable loyal customers. If something is an easy fix to make a customer (who is a diamond status credit card holder) happy, just do it! I have a 2 year old and an 8 month old who has cleft palate and I'm going through a treatment myself while my children's father abandoned us earlier this year. The only thing I get to do for myself that makes me smile is my makeup. I NEVER received the birthday gift in June. I checked everywhere in my email. I activated everything I was supposed to. Ulta doesn't care one bit that I didn't receive it. Yes, I understand it's a few days into July but I never received anything! It's not like I received it and just didn't use it. It's a $15 item that could SOMEHOW be sent to me but Ulta refuses to leave me satisfied. No one took any extra steps. They basically said "sucks to be you!"
I think Ulta has a little bit of everything for each customer from quality to price. However the staff sometime seems a bit questionable at times or not so enthusiastic to be there. They also seem to try and put heavy makeup on you that you might feel is not even a match, just look at the makeup of those trying to sell and find an employee that looks more like your application style - the more natural the better and less is more in my opinion.
I'm not near a Sephora which I find to be a step above this chain in product and customer service but what I do like is the easy return if something doesn't work out for you.
You might however just leave with the feeling those employed will be talking about you after you left the store.
Ulta is honestly one of the only places I'll buy makeup. They have such a wide variety from drugstore brands all the way to very high end brands. The customer service is always great and helpful with returns.
Their online service, shipping, communication is great.
I ordered twice from them this holiday season and had zero issues- great free gifts with my order.
Truly helped me not run around mall after mall. I will definitely order gifts for friends from this site when they want cosmetic related items
Tip for consumers:
If you need reliable shipping I had no issues

Purchased a bunch of gifts for friends, that everyone seemed happy.
The free gifts that came with the items were equally fantastic
I ordered a bunch of items worth a lot of money online for gifts, ulta has still yet to refund me my money or even send out my package that I still never received. The customer service is horrible when you call. Still waiting for them to investigate my stuff and I just keep waiting and waiting even after paying for all my items. I much rather shop at Sephora they are a lot nicer.
Tip for consumers:
Ulta is horrible

I like shopping at Ulta. The sales people on the floor are there to help but not in your face or pushy. I absolutely LOVE Ulta! Their brand of makeup is awesome for the price and they have the best points system!
I love Ulta! The only reason I took a star off is because there are some high end brands that they just don't carry. Things like Gucci for example. Their rewards/points system is awesome, perhaps better than Sephora's however they don't include samples/free promo items like Sephora either. Their customer service is definitely better than Sephora's and they're much easier to get in touch with. If you're looking for great makeup/haircare- general beauty supplies, I recommend Ulta. If however you're looking for more high end, you're best bet is they brands website or Sephora.
Tip for consumers:
The coupon codes you're sent are usually not very beneficial as they only apply to Ulta's brand not anything else

I have purchased quite a bit of cosmetic products, beauty tools, and even hair care.
I used to love Ulta Beauty, and could count on great packing and prompt shipping times. My last two orders contained items in bottles. They were shipped in bubble mailers, and the plastic bottles a little dented. I won't shop there again, and don't recommend them.
I haven't shopped online yet, but I've gone to the store near me a few times. I should go more now that I can get reward points. There are a few items I have in mind but I don't think they carry the brand I'm looking for, Saint Laurent. Customer service is decent.
The product selection at Ulta Beauty is amazing, but their pricing is too high for standard middle class and low middle class families. Some women and men of all classes like to maintain healthy hair and skin it's unfortunate that their pricing isn't more affordable. I also wish that they had more natural (instead of chemically-latent) products were available to choose from.
So me and my step mom have been trying to place an order and it says card info is wrong so I put in my credit card again and it say unable to fulfill order so I just said whatever apparently those two times it took money from my credit card and I still have yet to get it back. And best part is I'm just getting the run around this store is not my favorite anymore. I'll take my business elsewhere!
Tip for consumers:
Don’t use the online
Ulta sent a catalog to my address for someone who moved away about 10 years ago. Customer Service would not allow me to stop the mailings, because I am not the customer. They wanted MY account data, which I refused. I have gone through live chat, emails and messages on Facebook, but after DAYS, no one will remove the person from the mailing list for such a simple request. This is the worst business practice I've ever run into.
Ulta is my go to store for not only my beauty needs but also my hair products. Their customer service is amazing which is very important to me. I am greeted the moment I walk into their store and am always asked if I need any help. If I do, every associate knows their products extremely well. Ulta has great sales and a wonderful loyalty system that is in itself would keep me coming back! Last but not least, their inventory... they have it all to take care of my needs!
Good luck dealing with any issues if you contact them via chat. When you have to ask 4 times for their location, this should give you a clue of what you are dealing with. They play dumb, answer questions you didn't ask and ignore the questions you need answered. Maria in "Guatemala" is so far beyond unhelpful. It is hard to imagine someone can be so uninformed and unhelpful you almost think they are pranking you. Unfortunately it is real! My 4 year old nephew can provide more help than these chat reps. Maria is the 4th rep like this so it is not just a fluke. Sad what companies will do to save a few $$$ and hire idiots. No chat option is far better than these reps.

Make sure you won’t need to return it!
Love Ulta but it screams lack of corporate support to me!
I have a huge background in corporate sales, product research, and customer service... and shorting your on-floor sales staff is a recipe for disaster. When the customer walks in and there is no one to help them, eventually it will catch up to you. Your floor staff needs to be focusing on helping the customer, not restocking or straightening, because they don't have enough help to do it! Everyone is stretched too thin!
I have to admit the samples and reward program is better than Sephora but the downside is that they lack a lot of key luxury products. I've never had a negative experience so far, just wish you had more diverse products.
HORRID customer service! Ordered online and was sent the wrong item. Was told I need to either make the 30 minute drive to the nearest store and hope they have the correct item to exchange or pay for both shipping and tracking to return it. They would request a prepaid label but it will take 2-3 days to learn if it has been approved. Speaking with a supervisor is another 24 hour wait. Seriously? I was sent the wrong item so why is it this difficult to get what I ordered and paid for?
I have been purchasing makeup and skincare goodies from Ulta for a few years now, even have a card. The website is kind of weird to use, but I always manage. Shipping has been quite slow but due to the current pandemic, I do understand. A website overhaul would be great for them, as I don't really frequent my local store as I've only received horrible service the last few times I went.
I love shopping ulta online. They have fantastic gifts with purchases and sales. Ulta also has one of the best rewards systems around. Also their events, like 21 days of beauty, offer some great deals. Ulta definitely has a variety of brands in one place.
I gave ulta a 4 because I wish the free shipping minimum was less and in store experiences leave a bit to be desired. I try to only go in store if it's absolutely necessary, otherwise online is the way to go.
Just stop with the catchy emails and coupons. You exclude all the brands everyone wants to purchase from your 20% off. If you offer a coupon, make it valid for what your customers want to purchase. Trust me, there are many other places to shop for beauty products.

None, they didn't qualify for the coupon
I just ordered a dermalogica face wash and it said a free full size moisturizer comes with it because of the price I spent... instead they sent a 5 dollar mascara instead of the free moisturizer. This isn't the first time something like this has happened while ordering off site! Do not post those offers if you cannot send them!
I have had a couple of incidents with Ulta where I felt like they were just sending canned responses but in the end they came through and it is hard to beat their rewards program and variety. Customer service could use a bit of improvement but all in all pretty satisfied.
Don't order for delivery if you need your items soon. Always excuses as to why order hasn't shipped. Will not order online for delivery anymore. 3 strikes Ulta delivery is OUT! Only shopping in store, if that. May use Amazon Prime or product sites.
Tip for consumers:
Go to the store if you need the products.
I love there makeup and the selection of products. The customer service was wonderful as well. I have shopped there many times in the past, and will continue to do so. Sometimes I just go and look around and we have one a bit farther, but presently they are completing a store just down the street from where (Thank God) I live which I great for me however no so great for my husband.
