I have spent so much time trying to get answers with 1stDibs reps with these 4 orders from one seller. BTW, the seller/owner Benard is beyond absolutely, amazing, AAA+++ and I have not even received any items yet. Just sent me very clear and prompt communication.
I have had this account for a few years and to date have not ever made a purchase. Yesterday evening I did an online chat that seemed to go on and on without any clear instructions. In fact, I got clear contradictions stating that I had to first make one purchase to be an approved buyer AND I needed to be an approved buyer if I wanted to use my code '1STWELCOME' to receive a 25% discount on a $2,000+ purchase. Once I make a purchase my next order will not qualify for 1STWELCOME code, correct? I sent a very long email to customer service with a screenshot of no items being purchase but ready to submit. I am going to Washington DC for my 3rd day of a very long conference. This is not the right time for such time to be wasted. I asked customer support through my last email to apply the discount later from the back office. I purchased 4 items (and maybe a 5th) with the same Gold vetted seller that was $2650+tax. I was told about requesting a consolidated invoice but this is the same person who told me I needed to be a pre-approved buyer by making a purchase and then placing my order and apply the 1STWELCOME code. So, after emailing 1stDibs support, I went ahead and placed my 4 out of the 5 total items being ordered. I am still deciding if I want the 5th that is available for 6 more days.

Answer: It's a real company. But as I have learned by experience their policies and buyer protection are a scam. They mark up prices and sell high. You over spend and no way to get a refund. I'm highly disappointed in their ethics. Don't buy, look elsewhere.
