“Blurb even satisfies trained eyes!”

Arash D.
3/27/23

I would like to thank Blurb for their professional, organized and neat production and excellent customer service. Jessica proceeded with my request quickly and Melissa provided me with a smooth inspection of the minor technical issue. She was very knowledgeable and figured everything out quickly. The colour issue got fixed and I received my order faster than expected time and in excellent quality. Thanks Blurb team.

Top Critical Review

“Inconsistent print quality of images”

John N.
8/30/22

They used to be good. The quality of the images was never an issue. Now they consistently print images that are too dark or green for the entire book and are refusing to fix the problem saying that in their "opinion" it is within acceptable margins of error. What happened to customer satisfaction!? I would not use them again. Find another source for printing. This is a total dud! Don't waste your valuable time formatting a book and spending money with them!

I ordered my books with express shipping. Not only did it show up late, but they damaged almost all my books. They arrived in a cheap piece of cardboard (it would be an insult to call it a box) that was crushed, with no bubble wrap on the inside.

If you're thinking of using this company go somewhere else. All you'll receive is disappointment and damaged books.

I ordered a book of my photos in hardback and a magazine version. The magazine version had been trimmed terribly. The outside edges of all the pages had debris from an obviously dull blade. How could quality control have missed something so obvious.
The shipping charges for Blurb and their subsidiary Magcloud are outrageous.
I will be looking for another self-publishing option.

Tip for consumers:
Blurb's quality control is lacking. Be prepared to be disappointed with your product.

I was initially pleased with Blurb's print quality of my first book... then came in my order of 5. A couple of them had misprint problems; random giant numbers and info printed that I had nothing to do with, a book starting at page 103, a book with the title page in the middle, and so on.
Hopefully Blurb's customer service can resolve this because I'd hate for customers to be disappointed in me for Blurbs mistakes.
Edit: Blurb customer service was quick to respond and sent two replacements free of charge.

Hi Jayk,

I'm sorry to hear of the problem with 2 books in your order of 5. I understand that you were happy with your previous order, so this must have been very disappointing. I was able to find your support request and see that you were offered 2 free replacements. I hope you enjoy your books once they arrive.

Do not waste your time or money. By far, the worst quality photo book I have seen so far.
Outside Binder text is off center vertically and horizontally
Bubbling on the back page
Poor quality paper
Poor quality prints
Inconsistent spacing/ padding on all the borders are on each page, which should have been full bleed.

Excellent web site.

Their book design tool is one of the flexible, easy to use and intuitive that I have come across. I've tried several and found their tool get's me my books designed the most quickly. You are limited only by your own creativity.

The books are good quality. I've designed and bought around 1/2 dozen now.

Only once did I have an issue... a book was damaged in transit... i let them know by email, and they replied within just a few hours promising to immediately ship a brand new copy by express (premium) delivery... with no charge to me. And they were true to their word.

Only word of caution... they do offer a premium paper option... this is good, however, if you have too may pages, then you may find the binding struggles to hold. But this is well documented, and plenty of literature and guidance provided.

Very Reliable. Fantastic Service, Good value... why use anyone else:-)

I spent 6 months creating a 120 page book of original photography, with text, using Blurb's BookWright system. I ordered a proof copy and it looked okay so I ordered 50 copies of my book at a cost of approximately $3,000.00. About 35 of the books have printing defects which look like black ink smudges on the white cover. I contacted customer service and they promptly responded, asking for photographs of the defective books. I sent the photos but unfortunately I never heard from customer service again even after sending several follow-up emails. I had no other choice but to contact my credit card company to file a dispute, I'm hoping they can help. Extremely upset and disappointed, not just with the poor quality of the printing but six months of hard work and almost $3,000 down the drain.

I've been using Blurb for nearly 10 years, producing Trade Books with photographs - I help elderly people write their memoirs. People always say what great quality the books are - and they were! However, I'm currently awaiting (late) my third re-print of over £500 worth of books as each batch has been in thick and fuzzy print, but with the occasional random perfect page! The email support system is very slow. What's happened to the print quality? One of my lovely authors is very elderly and on borrowed time and I just want a set of good quality books for him. Come on Blurb - help me out here!

Hi Kate,

I'm sorry to hear that you're not happy with your order. I was able to find your order in our system and see that you were charged the right State tax rate for your order. We are required by law to charge tax in certain US states where we have a physical presence, such as our headquarters here in California or one of our print facilities. We may also charge tax in other states that tax e-commerce orders. A list of the US states in which we charge tax can be found here: https://support.blurb.com/hc/en-us/articles/207794606

I was also able to find your support request and see why your book didn't print as expected. I see that you were given some advice, including checking the online preview, to prevent this from happening again. It's also a good idea to order and review a single printed "proof" copy of your publication before you place a large order, put it up for sale or send it to a client. That way you can see how the printed, trimmed and bound publication looks and make any necessary changes before you place the final order.

I hope the advice and discount you were offered by our team will be useful for your next order. If you still have any questions or doubts about this order, please feel free to reach out again and our Customer Support team will be happy to help.

I used them to buy two books for my clients that I paid full price for. One book never showed up as per my client (who really knows in that case) and the other book showed up cut way outside of the trim lines. I reached out to customer service who very coldly told me best they could do was a coupon and that this was a self fulfillment service so it is not their fault, they're on our end. I lost $150 to this company for nothing. I can maybe understand it was just this rep having a bad day but this is unacceptable! I want refund for both of those books if they even want me back as a customer.

Hi Azande,

I'm really sorry to hear of the problem with your books. I know it must have been upsetting not to receive one of the books and in cases like this, we're happy to offer a free replacement.
I also understand there was some confusion with your book layout and where the content should be placed. The following article explains trim guides in BookWright: https://support.blurb.com/hc/en-us/articles/207792656-Trim-Guides-in-BookWright
I hope you'll find this article useful if you decide to make another book with us.
I've read your support request and I'm glad to see that everything is resolved now, and you were offered a solution you're happy with.
Please feel free to update your support request if you have any further questions or if you need help with anything else.

I think my review title says it all. I recently created four magazines on Blurb and am highly disappointed on a number of levels.

1. No customer service. My highly experience design team was having an issue uploading to Blurb so we sent out a simple request to customer service and all we got in response was an automated reply which was of no help. Thankfully we were able to resolved one of the issues ourselves but we we not able to resolve the e-book version and Blurb never replied to us. Ever...

2. Horrible! I mean horrible color. None of the colors matched when printed.

3. Ridiculously overpriced for such a poor product and zero customer service.

My company is looking for an alternative print-on-demand source. Does anyone know of a good one?

Tip for consumers:
Honestly, I'd avoid Blurb at all costs. It's a heart breaking waste of time and energy.

Hi Michael - My apologies that you did not receive a reply from us. We do respond to all emails sent to our Help Center. It is possible that something went wrong in the receipt of the email. We can certainly look into the color issues for you. Please send an email via https://support.blurb.com/ and include pictures of the printed magazine(s) showing the issues and we will get back to you asap. Best regards ~ Jessica K.

If i could give ZERO stars I would. This place is a joke. I ordered 10 magazines for my photography business and it ended up costing me around $130. I received the product... later than anticipated... and it was complete garbage. Some text was missing throughout the magazine, all of my images were completely washed out. I cannot send this to clients. When I submitted a customer service request, it took over a week for them to get back to me. I submitted multiple pictures of the product and why it was defective and was told I should have gotten their more expensive magazine... I asked if I could get credit for the defective magazines and was told NO (even though other photographers I talked to said this happened to them and this was the outcome) The real slap in the face was that Terry the customer service rep told me I could have 25% off my next order. REALLY? Why would I want to waste any more of my money with this awful company.

This company has atrocious customer service as in I would send an email through their system and never get a reply. I asked them to change the shipping address on a very important book while it was still being printed as I was travelling and needed urgently shipped to NYC where i am going to. The customer service never replied while it was still possible and only after it was shipped did she reply. After reading the reviews for quality here on this site I am even more petrified that this will be an awful experience. The book is stuck in customs most likely die to the fact that they dont know how to fill out simple paperwork. The customer service is truly deplorable and I will be asking for a full refund as now it looks like i wont be able to get my book in time.

Hi David,

I’m sorry to hear of the problem with your order. I was able to find your support request and saw that we couldn’t change the shipping address while your order was in production because the new address was in a different country. However, I’m glad to see that our Customer Support team offered a solution that worked well for you and that you received your order. I hope you enjoy your book!

I've been working with them for over a year now. I've had all sorts of technical issues to solve, and they've always come through for me. (Customer service even seems to be working at night and on weekends.) My project had some unique challenges, so perhaps it wasn't typical. I shouldered all the technical aspects of creating the body copy and cover myself (thousands of lines of server-side code, then lots of Photoshop), so I didn't have to use any of their software. I'm amazed at the sharpness of the body copy from my pdf file. It looks a lot better than anything I can even render out myself from Adobe Acrobat. So if you've had some professional experience with design and typography and don't need a lot of technical hand-holding, I'd stick with Blurb and save a ton of money.

Tip for consumers:
Keep proofs of sale handy!

I created a soft cover trade, 470 pages. In my case, I was able to create all the pdfs at my end and then just upload them to their system.

I ordered 2 books last December, one with a PDF. I had no cause to open the PDF until recently and found that there was no text in the PDF. I begin my query as to why and could it be fixed.
Several E-Mails later, no resolution. Shame on me, I lost the order number. They can't seem to find my order using my name or the book title? Really?

I had hoped they would just fix the problem and send me a new PDF with the print included.

Today received my book from Blurb. In the middle of the book were pages from another customers book! Customer service is appalling! It is impossible to speak to anyone on the phone about this and all emails are being ignored! In addition the book was kept at a depot in the Netherlands for FIVE days with no explanation. Disgraceful state of affairs. I will no longer use this company!

Hi Edward,

I'm really sorry to hear that you've received a book with the wrong pages. The defective book shouldn't have shipped in the first place because these instances are caught internally, before the book ships. It's very uncommon for such books to actually ship out. Nonetheless, this is an error that we take very seriously. You will be sent a return label to return the defective book free of charge. We'll also make sure you'll receive the book you had ordered. Rest assured that your emails are not being ignored. We're just experiencing a high volume of requests and longer response times.
I'm going to send you a private message to request more information, such as your order number and your support request number. That way I can check the status of your request and make sure you'll be helped as soon as possible.

I have created 10+ premium magazines through Blurb, both in the US and now in Canada and the quality is excellent. Magazine size and quality about the equivalent of Condé Nast Traveler.
I used the Book Wright software that Blurb offer for free, to create all magazines and I've found the layout and colours to be very accurate.
Their magazine product is also amazing value, a 120+ page magazine just costs CA$25 for a single magazine, the price per magazine drops when you order larger runs.
I've found the photo quality to be comparable to photo books that I previously printed with Apple (paper is lesser weight than a photo book, but quality still good), to the point I no longer make photo books, just magazines.

I've also produced a couple of trade books (plain paper that can be written on). Even though it's plain paper the photo quality is still great.

Tip for consumers:
The Book Wright software doesn't make it clear, but spine text can be added, the magazine needs to be 80+ pages, as can be seen in one of the photos.

I ordered a photo album on January 27,2021
I received an album February 2,2021... in less than a week.

The album is incorrect. The front and back covers are correct but the content is someone else's photo album.

Blurb was able to produce and ship the incorrect album in less than a week. But, since contacting their customer support via email on February 3,2021 to try to correct things, as of February 18,2021, I have not heard anything back re correcting the problem!
And there is no other way to contact their customer support. No phone number. What kind of business has no listed phone number?
Blurb's customer support is currently non-existent.
They have my payment for the photo book, USD $341.65, and I have someone else's photo book.
Blurb used to be good. Not any more. That is sad.

Hi Ken,

I'm sorry to hear that you received a defective book. I'm also sorry for the late response to your support request. Our Customer Support Team has been incredibly busy for the last few months.
I was able to find your support request and see that you were offered a free replacement book and a prepaid return label to return the book to us at no cost. You've been a loyal customer for so many years, so you know that this isn't the standard level of quality and service you can expect from us. I ordered a book a month ago and blurb support says I need to be patient. They provided a tracking number from USPS. When I go to check it, it doesn't show anything. It seems like that tracking number was never created. This company doesn't have a phone number to call in? I am tired of dealing with emails that they don't response my questions... the only thing they say is just be "patient". I have no patient anymore I asked for a full refund with no answer from them. What kind of company is this?

Wrote a book and sent for printing three and sending them to me, and I paid for three copies,
But when I approached them by email about it, they were only willing to cover sending one copy to me in exchange. This is uncomprehendingly vile because of the heavy shipping price I paid along, with each copy costing me around $65 all in all. So that's a $130 loss for me, who only wanted to share my novel.

I ordered 100 books on their mohawk Pro photo paper at $138NZ each incl duty/gst of my photographic portraits. All the books I have opened so far have begun to get warped pages which has increased over time. They refuse to take any responsibility, claiming its 'normal', for this only offering a mere 10% refund on the book itself, also refusing to reprint on another paper. I cannot sell these, so am now in major $12,000 in debt. Absolutely gutted! They also printed lighter than my proof which was a nightmare in itself, and on the few I've opened a number of covers are scratched, probably by the machine that puts the cling flim on

This is our third time ordering magazines with this company. The product is fine, and we haven't had any problems with shipping, but not having a phone number to speak to a live human is a ridiculous decision on the part of this company. They say they will email you back, but don't give any indication whatsoever of when that will be! Even the NYC subway system, famous for poor customer service, tells you when the trains will arrive! People on a deadline don't want to sit around waiting for an email to show up in their inbox two days after they sent the message! Can you tell I am furious?
