I ordered two pecan trees from Burgess last season. When they arrived they had both roots eaten through by some type of borer. I set them out anyway and they never showed signs of life. I sent in a request and they sent me two more trees. The worm holes in the roots look almost identical to the first batch. DONE WITH BURGESS!
Never Order from here! I placed an order for couple hundred $$$ worth of plants. When they arrived they arrived in plastic bags all mangled. When I called they said that if they didn't survive they would honor the warranty replacement. I asked that the rest of the shipments be packaged better. They were not. I had verified the date that the paper work had to be postmarked by for warranty replacement information twice and I had emailed (with no acknowledgement). They are now not honoring the warranty replacement because they said that they did not receive it by the correct date. Everything had to be snail mailed. I would have been better off going to walmart for the trees!
I Called same day as order placed and cancel also followed up with email to make sure. They are claiming order was received which I never got and has denied my credit card twice. I have spoke to the following people Jamie, Andrew, Michele, Sara, Fran, Valerie, Millissa, Chris, all of them twice and still will not refund my money.
Ordered $140 worth of stuff and only half ever bloomed. 3 of the 5 trees we ordered are just sticks even though they were all planted at the same time. 1 of the 2 trees that are blooming is some deformed shape and is not straight. Ordered 2 clematises' and both were in bad shape and died. Bought 2 more from Amazon and they are doing great. 2 of my 3 red daisies never bloomed. And only 1 of my other 2 plants ordered is growing.
Last year in their 2021 spring catalog, part of my order was "fall gold raspberries" which to my surprise all ended up surviving and thriving despite how bad they looked on arrival. However I began to notice the plants looked nothing like any typical raspberry I knew of, being covered in sticky red hairs kinda reminding me of a sundew plant, amongst nasty thorns, worse than my black raspberries thorns. And did not fruit at the cane tops in fall like a typical everbearing raspberry. It wasn't until this season 2022 when the flowers began forming I realized what Burgess actually sent me were Wineberries! For those who don't know Wineberries are an invasive Asian species of raspberry. Now I live in MA so not only did Burgess send me the WRONG plants, but what they sent were a banned species in MA. Now they are ripening right now and are quite delicious, but I paid for fall gold raspberries, NOT wineberries. So long story short even if your mail ordered plants manage to survive, you might end up receiving a plant you did not pay for!
In the Spring of 2017 I ordered several trees and other plants, which were shipped bare-root. One tree was sent with no roots and the other trees were scraggly and misshaped. I planted them anyway and several trees never grew. I went through the difficult process to replace the trees and they were resent. The replacements were still not in good shape. Also, I ordered seedless grapes, and at the end of summer the plants that did produce some grapes, the grapes has seeds.
I will never order from this company again.
I received dead plants and they would not send new ones. I followed their policy and was told I didn't know a dead plant from a live one. I e-mailed them and told them I would never buy plants from them again. As a Master Gardener and gardening business owner I can tell if a plant is dead. Sounds like a lot of others have had the same problem. Be careful this company sends out catalogs using different names... one of them is Dutch Gardens. Still researching to find the others. I have never had problems from other companies... and I do buy a lot of plants!
Burgess is not a legitimate plant/seed company. Placed order, Burgess charged credit card immediately and claimed plants would should ship according to plant schedules, which do not appear to align with any other planting schedules. Order was never shipped or received. 17 calls and never once did Burgess answer their phones. 5 emails to follow up, they only response was from an Off-shore person claiming that Burgess would process order or cancel. Neither has happened, NEVER ORDER FROM BURGESS
DO NOT ORDER FROM THEM! I placed an order the 1st week of April for a$108.00. As of the 16th of June I received $10 worth of worthless seeds. You cannot call them their phone number only gives you a busy signal. When I try to e-mail the e-mails are returned undeliverable. All I wanted was a refund! I am a single old lady on a fixed income that just wanted to grow a nice garden to help supplement.
I live in Wisconsin. I ordered some roses through this company. I received them on MARCH 1. Their site says they ship to the warmer states and the south starting in March. These plants should not have been shipped to me until the very earliest in April. When I wrote them to complain, they told me to "store them in a cool, dark location". I shouldn't have to store them. I expected them to be shipped at the correct time, and I would plant them then. I told them I not only did I not want to store them, I have no garage in which to store them. They told me I could return them. Why should I have to go through all this inconvenience and trouble for their mistake.
Answer: My advice is to NEVER order anything from Burgess as they send dead plants, sticks and twigs and if you have placed an order then go ahead and ask for a refund because you wont be happy. The plants they send are typically dead or will not live long. Don't trust their warranty as they do not honor any warranty. Burgess has sister companies with different names because Burgess is now known as dishonest and a scam. Any good reviews you see are probably from the company itself. Read through the 1000's of reviews and you will be satisfied you did not buy from Burgess or its sister companies.
Burgess has a rating of 1.3 stars from 281 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with Burgess most frequently mention customer service, credit card and dead plants. Burgess ranks 124th among Gardening Supplies sites.
