I was actually quite happy with burgess. I did not have to deal with their customer service, but their product was great. They say that they send dormant trees, and that is the case. The cherry and peoni trees we received looked 'dead', but a year later they are flourishing. We also got some ice plant that has taken over as a great ground cover should. The mosquito shoo geraniums got huge but didn't do a fantastic job with the Mosquitos. Our mixed pepper seeds ended up producing a gallon to two of peppers per week for about three months. The finally died after the third frost in late October.
I plan on buying a big shipment from the after I move into my new house.
Read the directions, and don't forget that they are shipping plants so expect them to take a while.
Waited quite a long time before receiving my order. When it finally arrived, plants were very poorly packaged and most of them were dead. They say they have a guarantee but you better make sure you save the original shipping label. If you don't that's how they get around honoring their word. They refused to help me so I ended up paying $60 for three seed packets! Terrible company!
Ordered four Pecan Trees in late Feb. They arrived March 10th. Dormant, but very much alive. If you can't tell if your plant is alive do the scratch test, if it reveals white or green bark the tree is very much alive. Placed plants to soak for 24 hours then transplanted to large containers until they have grown more, once they are bigger we will transplant to their final home. The shipping method of this company could be better, the plants did come in just a large green bag that was shoved into our mailbox, luckily we have a large mail box. I received my whole order, and got exactly what I was expecting. Their policy does say to give your plants/trees at least six months before requesting a replacement, I fear a lot of these horrible reviews are people who don't know what a dormant tree/plant looks like. The others have prob. Had truly poor service but I would give this company another chance, so far I'm pleased!
I have shopped from this catalog for 4 years now, I've been disappointed with plenty of items, but I'd recomend going with the bulbs (any serial # beginning with B) and definitely recommend the strawberries. They are totally worth it and you wont find them cheaper anywhere else. I dont like the $10 shipping charge and that's what limits me to one purchase per year.
I am currently at 6 weeks of wait time on my order (mainly bulbs and seeds) and cancelled today. Every email response I received said that my order was in processing which would take 1-2 weeks. 6 weeks later... still waiting... Unacceptable. I had never ordered from this company, but decided to try it out. Never again. I'll take my business (and my yearly $500 flower budget) back to Springhill. The prices are a bit higher, but well worth not dealing with vague and very neutral responses. They say 24 hours for a refund, but we'll see. If not, there is always the BBB option. Buyer beware!
Dont be sorry and be fooled by low prices. If you want healthy plants, great customer service, go elsewhere. Also this place is the same under another name of "Direct Gardening"(Bloomington, Il.). Currently in process of trying to get refunded after several excuses of delaying orders.
Ordered Feb. 9 2017 and of March 27th haven't received my plants, although Burgess has cashed my check. Don't trust this company! Will never get ripped off again from this company. They should not be allowed to have a business!@!
No customer service at all and no company response to inquiry on website. Customer service email returned "undeliverable". Phone line always busy. Broken plastic package contained a DEAD plant, not dormant. I've gardened for nearly 70 years so I know the difference. Paid for 4 of one plant type, got 3. (I have photos to prove my complaint but can't get this old computer to cooperate in saving to correct file type.)
Burgess and Direct Gardening have the same address and phone number. Last spring I ordered fruit trees from Direct Gardening. They never shipped, each time I called they were going out next. Finally disputed charge with my credit card company because they did not want to return money. This spring I ordered trees and seeds from Burgess not knowing it was the same company. They did not ship in the timeframe listed. Tomato seeds have no value if not planted early enough. Their excuse was they were waiting on my climate to be right. First, bare root dormant trees can be put out now. Second, seeds like tomatoes need to be started indoors early. It sure appears this company is nothing but a scam. People need to contact the Illinois Attorney General and fill out an online complaint form if you are also being scammed by them running under multiple names. Absolutely horrible company that should not be allowed to do business.
Ordered my product in March ($100 worth of plants). They advertise shipping plants when it's appropriate for your climate zone. They shipped $10 of my order and now say the rest of my order won't be shipped for 3 more months. It's May 19th as I write this review. That means the order won't ship until end of August. Considering our growing season ends in September, it seems I won't be planting any flowers or veggies this year. Waste of time and money. Useless company with ZERO customer service. Don't bother ordering because you'll likely never see your order in full. I'll be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau. Complete scam...
Answer: My advice is to NEVER order anything from Burgess as they send dead plants, sticks and twigs and if you have placed an order then go ahead and ask for a refund because you wont be happy. The plants they send are typically dead or will not live long. Don't trust their warranty as they do not honor any warranty. Burgess has sister companies with different names because Burgess is now known as dishonest and a scam. Any good reviews you see are probably from the company itself. Read through the 1000's of reviews and you will be satisfied you did not buy from Burgess or its sister companies.
Burgess has a rating of 1.3 stars from 281 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with Burgess most frequently mention customer service, credit card and dead plants. Burgess ranks 124th among Gardening Supplies sites.
