Google's PageRank is unfairly biased against new and small websites - I am working on a start up that hasn't launched yet, but one thing is clear: when it does launch my site will be at a clear disadvantage to older, more established websites or any site that is connected to them, *regardless of the quality of my site.* And unless my site is really lucky or has some inside connection, it will not get written up in one of the PageRank influential blogs like TechCrunch so I will have to wait months and months and spend time and money on link building and marketing to get my site off the ground. Contrast this to Google or Yahoo - as soon as they launch a new product or service it goes straight to the top of Google search results.
The influence of Google and their PageRank algorithm is huge, and it is clearly unfair to new and "unconnected" websites. So, for example, if I started some neat little site that offered a unique and valuable service, and Yahoo (or Google) decided to copy me, they could bury me with their superior PageRank, even if my site was better quality.
Fortunately, the costs of doing business on the internet are low enough that small sites can often tough it out and provide a better service than larger sites, and with patience, hopefully one day succeed. But it still makes me angry to know the sites like Google are creating a monopoly on the way information is disseminated on the internet, particularly because PageRank is based more on popularity than quality which hurts small and new websites.
I believe the internet needs a new way of helping people find good websites. A mechanism that is more based on *quality* than *popularity* (ie, PageRank). I'm not sure if SiteJabber will be able to do this one day, but I certainly hope someone does.

How can anyone LIVE in a society where ripoffs are allowed to operate under the cover of darkness? Google, look. Do you understand that local businesses are sort-of run ineptly? Do you know that local businesses frequently mess up ON PURPOSE? This is why liking Mom and Pop Shops is a thing of the past. No one wants a false veneer of folksy friendship, when it's coupled with inept execution and little effort or talent. That's why Walmart won! They could do it better. We like them now. WE did that. We weeded out the bad ones and made Walmart better. The community. That's why it's popular.
But Google doesn't see that. If a review of a local business looks like a bad review, and the company I reviewed sees the bad review, Google will take it down because the company complained. It's the community VS the company, Google. All VS 1. We are the judges. WE take the bad BUSINESSES down. That's how society operates. YOU (Google) are preventing that from happening or straight-up doing the OPPOSITE! You're just keeping everyone down by taking down customer complaints and allowing the shady business owner to do their worst, and for no good reason! All reviews left on Google, now, HAVE TO BE two-faced (eg. "nice job! Very clean! They didn't even threaten to kick my dog or call me gay!"), or Google prunes them (because the company I reviewed saw the review, realized it was a negative review, and complained about the negative review). We ALL have to operate shadily now, thanks to GOOGLE's system. 1 complaint from the company = review removed, VS 20 bad customer reviews. Stop taking down competent, salient, lucid, truthful reviews and instead leaving up two-faced, trolling, phony ones! How hard is it? You always take down the good negative reviews and leave up the dumb ones. Google rather survive than provide an adequate service that improves the community over time. Bye Google.
