I've really enjoyed attending the intermediate/advance conversation group led by Andrei on weekend mornings. The topics are always interesting and the Union Square Barnes and Noble is a great location. Looking forward to going again soon!
I have been an organizer for my group on meetup for about seven years. In June, they jumped their pricing sky high, $44 for one month, $180 for six months, $300 for a year and encourage us to have members pay this. Granted, we have 700 members, but that burden should not be placed on them (even 50 cents). When it was about $100 per year, I could justify the cost. At $300, I cannot any longer. And by the way, that is just their standard pricing. Meetup PRO is even more ridiculous than this. When I tried to reach out to support about this, I literally got the cold shoulder. Not a single person contacted me from Meetup about this issue. That was the final straw. Sure like most greedy corporations, they will get their money somehow. We just won't be one of their supporting groups.
FIRST, I wrote I wanted to cancel as host. SECONDLY, I'm billed for another term because I didn't know the procedure. THIRDLY, AFTER BEING BILLED, IM SENT THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CANCELLING.
BILLING WILL NOT RESPOND. I FEEL TRICKED. MEETUP SCAMS PEOPLE BY AUTOMATICALLY CHARGING FOR RENEWAL, THEN WON'T REPLY.
NEVER DEAL WITH MEETUP,!
All of the earlier functionality is gone. The site is flat and featureless now. The December 2017 update has almost made me lose interest in Meetup, and especially paying $260 a year to use it.
Okay. So I did call WeWork. Apparently Meetup is still running Meetup! So I don't know what happened to them, why they do not reply to any support messages or what's wrong with their site.
I met Yiqian Zhou through meet up.com, and discovered that he entered into the United States to attend Rowan University from Shanghai, China in 2005-2009 and 2009-2011 to earn a Bachelors and MBA degree. He entered the country using factitious and fraudulent documents, which was supplied by a Chinese company to recruit Chinese students to Rowan University up to 2009. The University has not done anything.
He currently resides in the Virginia or Maryland area and is working for Innovative life Solutions in Hyattsville, MD *******750). He used the same factitious documents to gain employment through this employer, who sponsors him. Other contacts that may be helpful to you is Gisele Jones-Human Resources Rep. At Innovative Life Solutions and most importantly, Tim Torry, the foreign student representative at Rowan University. Tim's number is *******105. Yiqian Zhou's number is *******776.
To those that write negative reviews about meetup. There are literally hundreds of meetup groups in your local area if you live in the suburbs, in or near a major city. The larger ones have over a 1000 members and a dozen or more organizers and may have several events in the same week, sometimes at the same time. You have to put yourself out there and try different events, meetup groups, different organizers. You can't just go to a handful of events and pass judgement. Yeah, there will be some clicks in some meetup groups but there is also friendly people a few new people joining all the time too.
Also picking the right type of event to attend is important too. If you want to meet and talk to people with common interests, for dating or whatever pick a event where you can actually talk. A group walk or hike, dinner, happy hour, pool party, gallery tour are a few good choices. Don't attend some dance or band night meetup where you have to scream over loud music- not conducive to casual conversation & meeting people.
Meetup is what you make of it. Yeah you may attend some bad events, meet some people you don't like, but you will also find your group and people you like to be with. I made lots of friends, met my girlfriend, made business contacts- all though meet-up groups. You have to take the long view, look past your nose, put yourself out there, it is so worth it when you do.
I have tried several times to upload pictures today, but they won't upload. I tried with both Edge and IE. The pictures are not very big, and I COULD upload pictures 3 weeks ago or so. When I click on Add Pictures, the screen gets darker and just sits there, with no pictures being uploaded.
Paying for the meet up club for several years and they are giving the Resist group free of charge. I will not be part of shoving any agenda on people.
Updated - meetup.com replied to my email, and refunded the amount in few days. So, bumping up the rating from 3 to 4.
================
Hi,
I had started a meetup group couple of months back for a Kids sports meetup in my area. I closed the group about 2-3 weeks back due to no interest to attend meets from the members. When closing the group, I elected to close my subscription and also to permanently remove all members from the group (i. E. not to nominate anyone else as group subscriber to continue the group). I have written an email to the meetup billing support team today and hope they will refund my amount without any fuss.
Some complaints about meetup.com regarding closing a group:
1. I searched my email account and message section on meetup.com. There is no confirmation email/message about closing the group. If anyone wants to close their group, I strongly suggest to take screenshots of the closing process as there is no other confirmation.
2. I had deleted my credit card details from meetup.com while closing my group. My card has still been charged. I think meetup.com secretly maintains card details even though your account->Settings->Payment Methods section may show that there are no saved cards
3. If anyone closes their meetup group, I suggest check back your account after 1-2 weeks to ensure there is no 'Payment Due' notice.
The third owners of this website are compensating for sales losses...in the most greedy way.
They invest in PR that first purports you only pay $12.71 for a basic tier charge then when getting to the actual site it says $17 and some change.
Then, when it comes to check out, you've paid $23 without even getting a free trial.
Lastly, I gave in and signed up for basic and decided to cancel after only thirty minutes.
There is NO refund option at the time of this post.
And look out for thee ludicrous "you must step down as organizer" stipulation to further distract you from "officially" divorcing your $#*! from these creep site owners.
I'm out $23 for having a membership that lasted only 30 minutes.
I don't have time to snapshot the website lingo, but I strongly encourage you to upload any absolutely greedy entrapment this site exercises.
Because of the networking disposition of Facebook groups, you get significantly more value than this dump and although they're siphoning all of your face data for Meta AI, it's free.

Meetup is the worst company ever! I tried to contact them for help with stopping a payment and their response time and system was an absolute joke! It's obvious that no one works together and I kept receiving emails from different people asking me for different things and then when I would respond that person would never get back to me and then when I would write another upset email I would just get a new person asking for the same thing, it took about a month to get anywhere and then they just told me they could not help! It's ridiculous that this company is too lazy to have any type of phone service to help their members, they could not understand the situation through email but yet I could not even have the chance to explain it over the phone! And they say they have great email customer service! That could not be further from the truth, I flit like I was dealing with untrained circus monkeys instead of people! This company just wants to take all of the credit, and take your money and have absolutely no responsibility! Their departments don't communicate at all, and they literally just don't want to deal with any drama so they use the cop out that they are just the middle man! You have seriously pissed me off and I will try to spread the word about your company anywhere I can and as often as I can! You treat your members like crap and I think other have a right to know!
Tip for consumers:
DON'T USE THIS SITE, Just contact the group you like directly or find them on Facebook, meetup is one of many outlets for groups, and they usually have pages on multiple sites! and don't pay any dues through them! you can pay an organizer directly! YOU DON'T NEED MEETUP!!!!!!!
I organize two meetup groups myself, and it is IMPOSSIBLE to find any link anywhere to even contact meetup for help, it is so extremely frustrating! Shame on them for selling their subscriptions but never providing any help at all!
Tip for consumers:
Customer Service is nonexistent which is extremely frustrating.
Feel smart, now?:-)
And people... join my FB page, " Meetup.com is a scam site "!

Tip for consumers:
Meetup sucks small unwashed Libertard weenie.
Group organizer was allowed to bring male to meetups that had a restraining order against him for sexual assault. Meetup HQ made aware and said it's not their problem.
Tip for consumers:
Stay away from meetup for safety
Did you know Meetup sold to WeWork in November for $30 million.
You can't get ahold of anyone! I've emailed support four times since December. No response.
I submitted an Meetup group for obvious scams. Ie charging a fee and then scheduling multiple events at the same time. Organizer never showed up to any of them. I sent to their *******@meetip.com email and got an auto response and nothing else.
Meetup is only interested in making money from organizers even if they are complete scams. I have been a member since 2016 and it had gotten worse over time.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND SWITCH OVER TO FACEBOOK GROUPS WHICH IS ENTIRELY FREE!
I signed up for a new group yesterday morning. By the afternoon i got an email from some women at Meetup that she didn't like my design and went ahead and changed it. I emailed them that although i appriciated there effort to improve my page, i wasn't happy they changed it without my okay. I asked them to agree not to change my page, that i paid for as long as i was within policy and if they couldn't do that to send me my money back. They choose to refund my money. So, be warned. Although you've paid for the page, they have full control over its content and lay out and by the way. This facit is not in there TOS
I'm giving this site more than the lowest rating because it's a way to meet a lot of folks with similar interests fast (and maybe the only way on the Web). Be warned however that signing up will bring tons of spam. The site offers settings that lead one to believe the spam can be controlled, but without creating your own independent filters that's really impossible.
For example, the site will send you solicitations to join additional meetup groups based on what Meetup deems to be your interests. It also invites you to check those interests on a provided list. One would think that the solicitations would be sent according to the interests you've listed--but not so. For example, even though as an atheist I have listed "atheist" and "humanism" and nothing relating to meditation or acting, I've received today a solicitation for a Prayer and Meditation group, and another for The Actors Alliance. In response to my complaints I get double-talk ("... we try to strike a balance between recommendations based on each member's current interests and suggestions for Meetups they might not have thought to seek out themselves").
The above is just one of the many many kinds of spam Meetup will send to members. Some of these can be controlled by settings, but these settings are a challenge to find. For others there are no settings at all, such as the repeated pleas to take over from a group leader who has resigned.
I am very outgoing and energized, and have always been one to organize events, so I thought it would be perfect to get a meet-up group going as I was divorced and wanted to connect with those who have common interests. I started a live music group and have invested an incredible amount of time into this for close to 8 months and have under 130 members only. I have scheduled 33 awesome meet-ups and most times I am solo or have to find an outside friend to go with and other times 1-2 people show. It is costing me $20 a month - no one contributes although I ask for a $2 fee (I don't want to ask for the money). I am not a quitter and had high hopes, thinking 1000 people would sign up right away (how silly). I reached out to meet-up and asked why is it that I see tons of people who are interested in live music yet they are not joining my site (even my friends couldn't find the site when I gave them specific instructions) and just some unhelpful responses. There is no number to call an employee and it is frustrating. Like I said, I am not a quitter but in this case I am feeling very discouraged which is not good so have to close up shop.
I was an organizer and member this place is crazy. I started a womens drum healing circle had about 30 women 20 rsvp to me for the eve we were having the circle. NO ONE SHOWED UP seems a bit strange I paid for the space and of course paid for the meet up organization. I then closed out my account and my credit card was being used on line. Do not play into this company they will not help you if you have issues like this. They send people to your meet up who do not want to come to a meet up or are 25 miles away from the place you intend to have the meeting. As for the new set ups it sucks. It use to be free but charging you for something is crazy. Meet ups are only good if you have a public place to meet and our area was very scare in those places. I would not allow anyone to come to my home, as you don't know who you are dealing with and most are a bit weird and crazy. They don't like groups and don't want to even meet. They just like to join on line. Don't waste your time or money, as you will get caught in a loop like I did, yes meet up is a scam!
I've been to both very good and very bad meetups, but haven't found a way to rate them. Especially when there's a fee one would expect it to contain at least the things mentioned in the description.
These people sure charge enough to use their service, but where are they when their service doesn't work properly? There is no way to contact a real person, just robot answers to questions.
They actually PAID somebody to redesign their site? Must be a third grader; it's total crap. Boring and very time consuming. I used to go there quite a lot. It's too boring now.
Meetup lost me forever when they started pushing their own political agenda. My guess is a cash infusion by their liberal backers made it worth it to them to alienate half their users.
I started a group and from the get-go they were like big-brother watching everything I typed. They made fun of my name, changed and deleted messages I typed for whatever motive they have. They have no true business model - they don't know themselves the purpose of their site. They are strict on things that they have no right in having a say over, yet are lenient on things that should not get a pass. The bottom line is they want to make money and you are the product. They even put moles in groups to see what they are doing and then steal ideas. I even had a girl from meetup HQ follow me on the bus to see what it was I was intending to do with my group. This is stalking people! The HQ is a joke run by teenagers who don't know the meaning of professionalism. I didn't even get a refund for my money. They laugh in your face. They use their cookies and tracking of your computer to see what sites you visit and then contact these sites to tell them not to do business with you. This is the epitome of cyber-bullying. Like I said, teenagers with a platform - only here the bullying is in cyberspace and not on the playground.
Tip for consumers:
Run far, far. away from meetup.
Don't have anything to do with these thieves. These people are nothing but low life crooks. First their customer service sucks. Next they drag you through the ringer asking for more an more money all the while promising they will return your money once you have been vented. After working with them over a week to get the code, they informed me they needed another $500 to expedite releasing me code and I needed to purchase an additional $480 in green dot cards. That was the final straw. I informed them i was no longer interested in pursuing getting a meetup-code and that I wanted my money back. I haven't heard a thing from them in days, email after email. They don't even acknowledge my emails. In addition the lady I was trying to meetup with (from the Ashley Madison site) immediately stop texting me. Don't fall into the same trap as I did. These people are crooks and I was a naïve idiot to trust them. I can provide proof of this ordeal through 100's of text messages with the lady and over 40 emails with the "*******@meetup-code.com if requested
Tip for consumers:
Avoid at all cost. Run, fast. These people are nothing but crooks.
