I've really enjoyed attending the intermediate/advance conversation group led by Andrei on weekend mornings. The topics are always interesting and the Union Square Barnes and Noble is a great location. Looking forward to going again soon!
I have been an organizer for my group on meetup for about seven years. In June, they jumped their pricing sky high, $44 for one month, $180 for six months, $300 for a year and encourage us to have members pay this. Granted, we have 700 members, but that burden should not be placed on them (even 50 cents). When it was about $100 per year, I could justify the cost. At $300, I cannot any longer. And by the way, that is just their standard pricing. Meetup PRO is even more ridiculous than this. When I tried to reach out to support about this, I literally got the cold shoulder. Not a single person contacted me from Meetup about this issue. That was the final straw. Sure like most greedy corporations, they will get their money somehow. We just won't be one of their supporting groups.
They are really great and we meet at different dog parks every weekend, the people are very nice and friendly. The site is really organized and it's easy to see who is going and I appreciate the updated emails. We always have a great time and they keep the meetups within a 12 or less mile radius. I just wish their was one for mountain bikers in this area.
I had an awful experience with this company. The information on their website regarding their subscriptions is vague to the point of being careless and possibly even deceitful. They mention nothing about their very complicated process of unsubscribing and their overworked customer service who are consistently delayed in responding to your issues.
I applied for a 6 month Organiser subscription in December and decided to try out the Meetup Pro free Trial in January. The following was not made clear to me
- that by moving to the Meetup Pro Free Trail, I was cancelling my original Organiser subscription and would have to pay for another 6 month subscription if I chose to go back. They said I received a discount for the unused months but I still ended up paying for months I did not intend to or agree to.
- In order to get out of the free Trial I would need to contact their customer service well in advance of the cut off point so that would have time to manually close the groups I had started and change my subscription plan before I was automatically transferred to a paying subscription. Individuals do not have control over their subscription as on other platforms. Not realizing this, I wrote too late and due to their slow response rate, I was automatically transferred and billed for 455dollars. They eventually refunded me but because of taxes and conversion rates I did not receive the correct amount back and there is nothing to do about that. The entire process was very messy, took a lot of time and many emails and I do not recommend it to anyone.
They also forgot to take me out of some sort of automated billing system so I received a bill for another 455 dollars a month later which was very confusing. Thankfully no money was charged from my account.
Avoid this platform! There are much better ways to create events or advertise..
Tip for consumers:
Their customer service system is very inefficient. They are understaffed and the staff I interacted with missed important details.
It is very difficult to get out of a subscription after signing up.
They fail to communicate about the flaws and deficiencies in their systems prior to you getting involved.
They fail to communicate realistically about the details of the exiting process of their subscriptions.

When I joined Meetup in 2008, it was well-done and well-run. I can do code and photography, so I was quickly made an "Assistant Organizer", and life was good for a few years. Then came the "NewMeetup" of 2011, an even-worse "upgrade" in 2013, and the site totally jumped the shark in 2017. Customer service was never very good, but it has become non-existent, and subscription fees keep increasing, while features disappear without notice. All but one of the organizers I met in 2008-2009 have left Meetup, and almost all the newer organizers are business owners who use the site as an advertising platform, for which the subscription fee is a deductible expense. For anyone else, I can't imagine Meetup being of any more use than Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
Seriously! $19 bucks a month to start a group and all you get is headache after headache! Once KiwiConnect.com comes out in my area I'm going to that! (free AND none of the privacy issues of Meetup such as people seeing where you are without even having a Meetup account)
Most of my experience with meetup groups has been good. I admit that I have not joined very many, but I have met some wonderful people and we have shared some fun experiences. Beware of some power-hungry organizers. You should be picky about the groups you join.
When I moved, I had no friends my age. It is difficult to find friends ages 50+. I joined a meetup group for people that are 50+ and have made some fantastic friends - couples and singles. We are all encouraged to host events that we ourselves are interested in. We all chip in voluntarily to pay the annual cost to have the meetup group. Perhaps my experience is unique, but I hope not. I encourage anyone seeking to get out of the house and enjoy time with others to join a meetup group. You may be a stranger the first time, but that won't last very long. Love my friends that I met through Meetup. Glad there is a Meetup.com.
I created two groups and have received tiny amounts of attention from the target audiences. Most of the time that someone does sign up for one of my groups, I write to welcome them, only to hear back that they didn't sign up. I have become convinced that Meetup randomly signs people up to fool organizers into thinking that it's worth it to continue paying for the groups.
The new upgrade is really a huge downgrade! The site is extremely hard to navigate, the design is crappy and distracting, and above all else-- they removed the calendar view for looking at your events! Now your stuck scrolling and searching for events. It's extremely time-consuming and I am very disappointed in this company:-(
I looked to meetup to get out and meet new people, do different things etc. It's been over a year someone took over Meetup. I can't see meetups outside my groups. If I do a search by location (NY), I get meetups from all over America. Everyone I talk to about this agrees: Meetup sucks. Bring back the previous managers. They ran it effectively. I find it sad because Meetup was my go-to place to get out and do something different. Not anymore. SAD.
This is a horrible site. I must have been asked to login at least twenty plus times in less than a hour. I can't even respond to a message that was sent to me. I'm told I have to be a member to reply - WHICH I AM. Not sure this is worth my time and effort.
Bad app trying to be social network like facebook, users not important. Posts/comments/messages disappear. Try and find something, I dare you. You click on it and they take you to another thing they want you sign up for.
My good friend who has had mental health issues for 5 years joined met up to get out and take his mind off things to fun group things. This organiser took offence at his photo for been too dark and through him out of a group - friend redid photo and then go thrown out again as organiser didn't read a message property and read itto mean something else and basically called him a stalker - highly offensive when the organiser looks like he does - anxiety has gone thru the roof re friend as he has been rejected all of his life - thanks KAI and thanks to meetup who allow organisers to be as ruthless and cruel as they like -1 star

After receiving an email from MeetUp about their #resist events, I unsubscribed from their email list and deleted my account. I am so ashamed and disappointed that this company has chosen to so outwardly express their political views, it's so unnecessary. They made an assumption that a majority of their members are socialist progressives, and we are NOT in fact. Hopefully they will lose membership as I am now joining a resistance to MeetUp, along with many others who are enraged by their recent actions.
I joined this group when it was initiated. Went to the first meetup, but there was nobody there! Afterwards organizer complained about my pic -- not a problem with the other meetup groups I belong to... Went to a second meetup a few moths later, total waste of time --- small group of intimates who had no interest in conversing with outsiders. This MEETUP IS A FARCE. Nothing more than a sop to the organizer's ego. Worse still it's overtly RACIST. Organizer seeks to impose his own will on members. Think Hitler! My advice, have NOTHING to do with it.
MeetUp just snubbed half of the country and half of their users in one fell swoop. MeetUp is promoting civil unrest and is spreading false news via email to it's members and organizers. Additionally, blatantly favoring one political party by giving them free membership for the left-wing, divisive meetup groups only. I had 2 faith-based groups and several of my friends are also organizers. After contacting all my members, I closed my accounts. Most of my friends are preparing to do the same.
Wherever you are going just make sure you travel safely back and forth, also what is the difference between making friends at meetup or anywhere else? Be your own best friend and go to meetup or out with friends to benefit yourself, and meet likeminded people, you can meet strange people or users at work or old school friends can change whatever! It makes no difference, there is a world full of people, as long as you are careful (which is obvious anyway) you should be fine, you could know someone for 40 years and find out they've done something terrible, you could know someone 1 day and they could be lovely!
I have joined 6 different groups that are all based on walking and hiking. On occasion, we have gone out for breakfast or lunch after. I have met so many nice people through meetup and have discovered so many new canyons, lakes, vista points, I could go on. Now that I have a nice repor with so many different people, Its easy to find someone going to the beach, mountains, or desert in California, depending on which direction that day I want to walk/hike.
I also noticed a lot of people who have moved here from different countries or states utilize meetup for just this purpose. It's very cool to meet others from around the world!
Tip for consumers:
You get what you put into it. Be nice, and others are nice to you.
The administrators of this site have no problem with the fact that many profiles are fake in that they have no photo or not a photo of themselves or a stolen photo of another famous person. When reported with proof of the identity theft, do nothing to remove the fake profile. When I exposed one member of identity theft, they cancelled MY profile! I believe because identity theft member is a paying member. This site started off with good intentions but unfortunately has been reduced to a money-making machine with no conscience. Also, supports Scientology as they have many groups on Meetup and hold recruitment events disguised as self-help seminars.
I joined a wine and lunch/dinner group and was nervous and excited to go. I had not gone out in almost 2 1/2 years and told the group so. I was at a 2 hour meeting that went for 4 hours. I thought we were having a great time. The leader told the group I had no filter. I thought later that her comment was rude. I had been having such a good time. I am a woman and the group had women and men. One man made a sexual joke which the leader did not hear. A couple got drunk. The leader saw this. The next day I noticed I was kicked out of the next event but not the group itself. I looked up comments on meetup.com, some of which mirror my own concerns. So, I was going to pull myself out of this group because of the leader, not because of the members. Unbelievable. I thought she could have pulled me aside if she had concerns. I will make friends the natural way at my health club.
The concept is a good one. The biggest problem with Meetup is the quality of people, and there's not a whole lot you can do about that. Every Meetup Group that I organized had a lot of people joining. The biggest problem is that people don't show up to events once they join, and they don't let the organizers know if their plans change. And they have no awareness that the organizers are paying to host a Meetup. They get irritated when you ask them to monetarily contribute to keeping the Group running.
I've taken to deleting people from my groups that don't check the page or haven't been to a meeting in 3 months. Everybody's busy, and they should choose activities that they really are going to participate. This is a big help, especially now that Meetup is now charging more money based on members of your group. It's pretty sad when you see groups of 200 people, and only 5 show up at a time to meetings.
Customer Service has been great. Quick response time.
Capitalist in sheep's clothing LOL. Keep your political opinions to yourself... or not. After all, you are a 4profit company. Want to impress me... donate 30% of your companies income to the homeless. Start a meetup for that. Want my disrespect? You already got that.
I tried to organize a meet-up group and it turned out I couldn't do it. No problem. I cancelled my organizer subscription ($20/month) prior to the renewal for the next month and I was still charged. I then reached out to customer service to get a refund and they denied me. Repeatedly. I would avoid working with them at all cost if I were you. They are not honest and their customer service sucks.
I wanted to join for only a month the website won't let you before you know it your sucked in a six month plan. I had a job offer in another city. For unforeseen circumstances I had to end my group. Leaving the group is sketchy too, because they try to keep charging you. I cancelled my card and turn them in as a fraudulent business. This practice of getting money for money for six months and no refund is a scam. The website you pay on is very misleading. Watch when you join. I refuse six months when I'm not even living in the area.
I'm tired of seeking an answer to the problems on Meetup caused by an update removing a list of functions too long to list. Suffice to say Meetup fails miserably to address the issues and refuses to roll back until they're ready to release a workable update. Please don't waste your money on this.
Who on earth are these so called technical people at Meetup, they have killed a perfectly good system, all the tools need to create events, set them out properly, give them your own personal touch have been removed. My new member uptake has droppped drastically, exsisting members can no longer find their way around the site, organisers are pulling their hair out trying to get events up and running. Most organisers are now looking for alternatives and getting ready to jump ship. Meetup seem oblivious to what their customers are saying. Marketing and technical people cant even agree on the same thing and contradict themselves, I have never seen a company attacked so vigorously across social media as meetup has with this disastrous roll out. It appears that no beta testing was done nor was their paying customers consulted. This backwards step could mean the end for Meetup, ignoring your paying customers is not the way to succeed.
