I've really enjoyed attending the intermediate/advance conversation group led by Andrei on weekend mornings. The topics are always interesting and the Union Square Barnes and Noble is a great location. Looking forward to going again soon!
I have been an organizer for my group on meetup for about seven years. In June, they jumped their pricing sky high, $44 for one month, $180 for six months, $300 for a year and encourage us to have members pay this. Granted, we have 700 members, but that burden should not be placed on them (even 50 cents). When it was about $100 per year, I could justify the cost. At $300, I cannot any longer. And by the way, that is just their standard pricing. Meetup PRO is even more ridiculous than this. When I tried to reach out to support about this, I literally got the cold shoulder. Not a single person contacted me from Meetup about this issue. That was the final straw. Sure like most greedy corporations, they will get their money somehow. We just won't be one of their supporting groups.
After years and year of using meetup we are forced to look for a new system to organize our 'meetups'. At first I thought the new platform was a work in progress or required a bit of a learning curve but after giving it a serious shot I have to say it almost unusable and a huge step backward.
Agree with John W. Hang out with a bunch of strangers from the start, go to another meet up and hang out with another group of strangers. Also outings like theatre what is the point of pairing up with strangers in the foyer and paying them a fee for the 'pleasure.' Might as well not go or go alone. Also a lot of meet up at are clubs that exist anyway so why go with strangers?
Scamming and charging for services that their saying can be charged in 24 hours if no cancelation. I used it n within the hour was charged 4 different fees@50$ I canceled it soon as that 24 hour turned in the moment I used card. They should have repercussions or be shut down. Nothing good from the short time.I was raped for their greed, overall no one should use this phishing site due to privacy reasons I can't show u the right way so please let me warn others
They block people trying to subscribe first time, for NO reason, and block ability to ever dispute, because you have to sign in to ask a question and you cannot sign in.
I will encourage any groups I care about to move elsewhere. They are completely clueless. Lots of other reviews here demonstrate that, lowest rating I have seen here on businesses I check on, and it appears that they couldn't care less.
I tried to organize a few meetups with no success, so I didn't want to waste my time or money anymore and attempted to unsubscribe as an organizer and stop my cc deductions. An almost impossible feat. They charged my credit card again and once again I'm trying to stop my membership. Phone calls not accepted and emails not answered. BEWARE!
Tip for consumers:
It sounds like a good idea, but I had no success.
I did not join Meetup to see your political nonsense. Cease and desist or you will lose the majority of your members and maybe the whole website. Meetup is supposed to be a fun way to meet people of similar interests - not to serve your political interests. Grow up!
They didn't have permission to charge my card again but they did. Also they doubled the price for the second month. I shouldn't even have had to cancel since I only signed up for ONE month. I disputed the charge through my bank but no luck. They won't give. There's info on the net about what it takes to get autopayments legitimately and Meetup doesn't meet the legal requirements. Will all the complaints they have it won't be long before there's a class action lawsuit which I'm certainly willing to get started. Seems since it's a relatively small amount, they figure none of us will really go after them. But I will. I'm one of those annoying people who's into the principle of the matter.
Tip for consumers:
Keep an eye on your bank activity.

I have used Meetup for over 5 years and with their latest update (late 2017 and continuing) all of the functions to successfully manage my group have been taken away in favor of "pretty" and phone "user friendly" for members. Chip-in - gone from the site; # of guests - gone from the site; monitoring # of no-shows - gone from the site; copying stored pictures to another event - all of the pictures are gone. I'm looking for another platform before the "improvements" become any worse!
I hated the latest version of Meetup (v. 6). It lost so much useful functionality.
Luckily, I had an old (before the Meetup update) iTunes back up of my iPhone, and was able to restore the prior version of Meetup from that back up.
This YouTube video showed me how:

Thank you MeetupHQ. With the push of the new #Resist groups you have finally pushed me to delete my profile and end the the years of emails from your site. I'm looking forward to one less spam email now that you've decided to promote the liberal snowflake agenda. Like other celebrities, Facebook pages, other social and mainstream media sites that have decided to weigh in on and promote the lefts politics trying to tell me how I "should" think. I choose to think for myself and in that regard I am happy to be rid of you and the other disappointing sheep of the last 8 years. When you want to return to being an inclusive site for EVERYONE I may return. Until then enjoy your new groups and new role as a propaganda machine for the snowflakes cause.
Horrible. Absolutely horrible. A nightmare for event organisers. Went from a terrific feature-rich site to one that continues to be less and less functional. No question that they are doing everything they can to chop code and reduce data usage. I'm an organizer for a group with over 5K members and we are dumping them.
None customer service support. Impossible to cancel. Until for reset the password it's a problem. No phone number to call. The only email that I find in the web site they sent me this answer -"Yikes! It looks like you replied to a notification from *******@meetup.com.
Unfortunately, replies to this email address are routed to an unmonitored mailbox, and no one will read them." No one will read them? Such it a disrespectful answer
I found it very frustrating to find the right meetup group inside the meetup app. I had the name spelled absolutely correct but still could not find it. Yet google found the meetup group no problem. Suggest Meetup do some work on their search algorithm.
They lied: first they said they sent me an email regarding my speed dating event. That was a lie, they never sent it, second: they allow speed dating events now. SO they targetted my singles group for no reason.
Almost 1.2k of my group members were removed by Meetup.com, after I stopped charging member fees. I had to stop charging, because Meetup.com put all the unpaid members in trial... pending removal... mode. So basically, they just took my money for 6 months and took away more than 90% of my members. Now, I have no way to contact many of my friends. I emailed them and tweeted at them... So far, no response. :(
I signed up to create a meetup group over the weekend. Nothing risque. Nothing shady. Just a group to enable people and business owners to develop and maintain a WordPress site. Before I could even announce my first meetup, I got an email stating that my group had been cancelled. Granted, I did plan on coming back to add more details to my profile. According to the email I received, my group "wasn't a fit" for meetup. No specific reason. Just a link to their terms page. Also that it would take 4-7 days to refund my money. Hogwash. If they have the time to review every new group, then they can reach out to new members to correct the issues before cancelling their group and making them wait 4-7 business days to refund their money.
Check out my site p2pcolorado.com... working to replace failing meetup, as a five year organizer, with my own site... Meet-up sucks... hate it now! Also lost a bunch of unpaid members and all control of my group... lame!
I have been an assistant organizer for 3 years and loved the old app. Why did they change it and not ask the organizers of one of the best meetups in the San Francisco East Bay what we thought of the app and gained feedback before they went live with it? It's not user friendly, you can't find comments and the pictures are so small you can't tell who is who. Go back to the old app PLEASE!
I been thinking of sueing meetup for mental crap! I joined a bunch three years ago, and it was fine. It helped me with all my depression and activities during my divorce.
I helped this organizer this weekend, felt strange about the situation, she flirted with me, and I didn't respond, next thing I got banned from all my
Meetups, and also some friends on Meetup I was on FB has all unfriended me!
She got two organizers to kick me out of the two popular ones I always have done!
What the $#*! did I do!
This isn't fair. She never ever thanked me, she just left me to be myself in a room of 70 people, awkward and left alone!
They suck
One thing I learned about meet up is I rather make friends the old fashion way and gradually in time get to truly know a person. Just hanging out with strangers from the start is something I would not do again. Worst time I ever had in my life. For the people I hung out with in the group YBLA can go to hell for the inaappropiate and ignorant ways they conducted themselves on this one night.
It is a stalker's paradise! There are so many obvious fake profiles; people who have been banned just rejoin with fake profiles, then show up to meetup events to repeatedly stalk, harass and terrify the person they are obsessed with. When Meetup is notified of these fake profiles, they do absolutely NOTHING about it even though they are aware through comparing the stalkers IP addresses. I have been told that I need to file repeated lawsuits against the criminal stalker before they will divulge the information. I had Organizers who repeatedly had to warn their membership to beware of this sick man and his repeated presence in banned groups in an attempt to protect me and keep me safe. Ultimately, I had to leave Meetup completely, while the sick, perverted stalker now has up to 8 fake profiles. All Meetup screams loud and clear is that they are a "Safe Harbor"... meaning they will take absolutely NO RESPONSIBILITY for any resulting harm. Meetup is a disgrace to the community.
The latest version of the app is horrid, clunky, and hard to navigate. Also, the redesign of the app icon/logo looks more like a Strawberry Shortcake design than a meetup site. The whole thing feels like little thought was put in other than to just change it - not improve it.
I started an account as a way to get people together that might be interested in Toastmasters. Toastmasters clubs can be (ours is anyway) a very diverse group of people with differing opinions. For Meetup to go political (#resist) is very classless. In my opinion, a waste of a good concept. Bye Bye Meetup.
I'm reading a lot of negative reviews, especially from organizers. It makes sense since many online businesses won't let you cancel or close the account. They want to keep charging $$$ against your will.
I researched online "how to report an online business" and I found "10 Effective Ways to Complain About a Company Online". Some may not be effective, others may:
1. Go to the company website
2. Contact the Better Business Bureau
3. Contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
4. Check out the Ripoff Report
5. Email *******@uce.gov
6. Try Yelp
7. Post on Planet Feedback
8. Google your attorney general
9. Post on Pissed Consumers
10. Visit Resolver

DISCLAIMER! I'm not associated with the group AT ALL! But I witnessed them in action today at SUTRO Baths SF. About 150 amateur photographers shooting. They took over the entire ruins, beach, rocks like little ants with cameras and their music blaring. The main guy (organizer) asked me how long I was going to be on the beach?!? The entire experience was embarrassing to witness and my experience at Sutro was RUINED. I saw a few guys had flashes on tripods with the ocean. Heheheh. Wave coming...
Tip for consumers:
If you want to be a photographer! (don't do it) the market is already oversaturated, and the top guys are not going anywhere. If its of Fun, don't go in big groups! your photos will look the same as everyone else's, so be original and find your own style.
Find Meetups so you can do more of what matters to you. Or create your own group and meet people near you who share your interests.
