“Andrei's French convo group is magnifique!”

I've really enjoyed attending the intermediate/advance conversation group led by Andrei on weekend mornings. The topics are always interesting and the Union Square Barnes and Noble is a great location. Looking forward to going again soon!

“Meetup is now Greedup”

Jim C.
10/13/24

I have been an organizer for my group on meetup for about seven years. In June, they jumped their pricing sky high, $44 for one month, $180 for six months, $300 for a year and encourage us to have members pay this. Granted, we have 700 members, but that burden should not be placed on them (even 50 cents). When it was about $100 per year, I could justify the cost. At $300, I cannot any longer. And by the way, that is just their standard pricing. Meetup PRO is even more ridiculous than this. When I tried to reach out to support about this, I literally got the cold shoulder. Not a single person contacted me from Meetup about this issue. That was the final straw. Sure like most greedy corporations, they will get their money somehow. We just won't be one of their supporting groups.

One day, emails from Organizers to members just stopped being delivered. Instead of telling Organizers and Members by posting something on social media, they let organizers spin their wheels for 2-3 days before admitting their email deliverability had been compromised. After 4 days it's still not fixed, and I doubt it ever will be. I have a feeling this has been going on for a very long time and Organizers are just now figuring it out. I knew something was strange when, a few weeks ago, I posted an event that got about 40 people the first time it was held. The second time I posted it was over 2 months later. It received 1 sign-up. That; s ridiculous. I honestly believe they've been tinkering with their email servers to suppress emails. They're slowly taking away all useful functionality in preparation for something while at the same time stealing Organizer dues. They're grifting people at this point.

Joined less than 6 months ago and have yet to havw a positive experience with meet up. They charge an insane amount of money and cant even help me sort out the reason why my members werent getting messages sent out to them. I hate meetup.com and would NEVER recommend anyone to use this website. Save your money.

- Try to upload multiple photos... omg, sux. No option for multiple selection.
- Join a scheduled meeting, and it can enter an appt in google calendar... great!
- If that meetup changes dates or times... forget about it updating. Lol.

We pay $ for this?

Really appreciate finally finding others' on-target comments about how awful M'up became for organizers, esp after the WeWork takeover.

And to update: Not only no improvement in sight, after it was announced that someone else bought it ~ during covid-19 I had a huge hassle to get my Organizer fees suspended, plus apparently they'll be increased from $60 to $100 for my small group for 6 months once fees are charged again!

Goodbye M'up! Great concept, but run into the ground, utterly disrespectful of the organizers without whom there is nothing. Alternatives exist, such as uGetTogether, so let's hope they become much better platforms that serve us well!

It's very telling that I came here specifically to write a comment suggesting Organizers band together and file a class action lawsuit and the most recent comment is suggesting the exact same thing.

Groups are failing. RSVPs have plummeted. Emails are not being read/received. It's become impossible to reach group members. It used to be a new group would get the initial boost of 100-300 members the first week after Meetup announced the group to members. Now you're lucky to get 20-30 members. I use unique links for payment in all of my postings. Events are garnering less than 10 clicks over 3 weeks for a group of 1,000 members. I post discount codes and nobody uses them. It's as if members aren't even aware an event has been posted. It's time Organizers demand an explanation. Meetup is not delivering the services they advertise. Things were degrading before the new redesign but now it's in complete failure.

I initially signed up to join a Christian group for under 35s here in Melbourne, Australia. Ii have been rejected TWICE! The female group leader, I think, seemed desperately jealous and threatened by me... just by my picture (one of my daughter and myself). My personal stats did not breach the groups rules. I've never been married, divorced, engaged etc. I simply wanted to meet like minded folk... and I never imagined to be harshly judged, or rejected, by supposed loving Christians. Pfft. That woman is a joke. She wants only what SHE considers, "ugly" Christian women to join. Anyone else, get ready for rejection.

Tip for consumers:
Don't bother joining this group. This woman is a fake. She clearly states that it's not a dating group, but yet she is utterly threatened by decent looking women.

Hacking our accounts... spamming and scamming us. Unacceptable. We joined as paying organizers and now you bring in sponsors to support 1000+ groups with 100's or 1000's of potential non-paying organizers. All to fight everyone and everything that is not radical left wing thinking. Partisan is such a mild, gentle word to describe what meetup is doing. Promoting hatred, anger, and violence. I had a really tough time (as you intended) to close my group. I finally had to delete all members one by one before you gave up on getting a new organizer to lead the group that I organized. It was also a lovely touch to cut off communication with unhappy subscribers. As i said a week ago... Bye Bye Meetup.

The success of any MeetUp is really about the organizer ( Westerville 40's = the organizer is not kind, graceful, nor diplomatic) and of course the people who join the group. But again, if the organizer is accepting, treats everyone equally, and doesn't promote gossip then it's likely the group will be successful. If an organizer has pure intentions of getting people together we must assume that people are adults... don't micromanage!

In my somewhat limited experience the best groups are the ones which draw sports minded people together, such as kayaking or cycling. As a cautionary note it is probably best to never use your full name nor tell where you live or what your profession is. There will always be creepy people and if someone messages you via the MeetUp site-- simply ignore them!

I cant believe they charge money for this site. Has to be the worst design I have ever seen or used.
Redesign removed noshows
Customer support responds with totally incorrect info
People bypass group owner authorization by paying with PayPal. Automatically lets them join group

Destroyed the app and have made it the most confusing thing ever.

Facebook please make something and crush these people.

I have even started a petition please sign

So apparently, it is just a bunch of "Like" buttons for your personal interests. It seems like the kind of thing, in this horrible age of instant gratification, consumerism, and hyper-materialism, that people just go in - start clicking away on all the things they would like to do, then never show up to a meet up. Personally, here in SoCal, they are all really too far to drive and be stuck in traffic. Plus, hardly anyone ever RSVP's. Guess they are too busy at other Meetups? Wrong. They are too busy worrying about themselves, and watching reality TV to care about socializing. What a sad more on the decline of our society toward 3x5 mobile screens...

You people just aren't going to be happy until everyone on the planet shares the same "progressive" hive-mind are you? Stop shoving this resist crap in my face. You don't speak for me. You don't get to lecture me about "this is not who we are as Americans". Oh really? Who elected you to speak for all of us? The sense of entitlement of you people knows no bounds. Keep it up bozos, the harder you push, the bigger the Resistance to your agenda is going to be. People naturally don't like what to be told to do or think, people naturally rebel against authority. With as smart as I'm sure you think you all are you'd think you'd figure that out. I didn't even vote for Trump but if you lunatics keep this up I will next time just for spite.

I can't believe Meetup had to turn political and push their far left progressive AGENDA down everyone's throat with their "Resist" groups. This is scary, beyond disgusting, distasteful and militant. WHY WHY WHY are they doing this? Meetup for years has been a neutral place where anyone could start a group for anything for any interest. It should stay neutral. I've been an Organizer for several groups in the past but I am now forced to completely drop my memberships to all my groups on meetup. Just smh...

It used to be a pretty good site, but pointless redesigns which reduce important functionality, while making other functionality harder to find and use has made this site ripe for a competitor to replace them. Now if a competitor would just appear...

Well since no one else did, I just built and released a competitor- https://www.uGetTogether.com We pride ourselves on our 20/20 vision- being 20% better for 20% less money. Of course, we'll probably need to change the first number as we continue to turn out improvements and they continue to sit on their hands. Probably our biggest improvement is that we will be listening to our users!

I've used this site for years for organizing social network events. The reason I used this site instead of facebook events pages was because I didn't trust facebook. Facebook has made significant changes to their site without notifying subscribers on many occasions. Well... After using meetup.com over the years and PAYING for the page, meetup.com has made subjective format alterations to the page as well. It is one thing if Facebook makes changes to a free page. However, paying for a meetup.com page and having them reformat the product that a customer has paid for, without their permission was very disappointing.

If there was another way to organize my teams activities, I would jump ship in a heartbeat!
As an Organizer, it has become increasingly more difficult to work with the "upgrades" that they`re trying to implement in order to have a unified operating system between the desktop and mobile environments. The upgrades have become so buggy that on any given day, fields disappear, information in fields is not populated correctly or disappears, previews or drafts of scheduled meetups launch themselves without the Organizer having to select schedule or publish, Comment Notifications from team members to the Organizer works intermittently. The Location function was not working properly today (4/25/2018) when I tried to schedule an event and the list of goes on and on. In light of the fact that the company charges $180/year to use their SaaS, it is definitely not worth it.

What good is a Meetup site that doesn't recognise your perfectly valid locations for a Meetup, or provide any help to add a new location, or even just enforce one if the Meetup site doesn't recognise it itself. It's just become pointless. The whole layout is shoddy and clunky.

Organizers pay for the service. Meetup consistently ignores complaints from organizers and rolled out a half-baked redesign missing some major features that organized organizers relied upon... such as marking no shows on attendance and pinning a precise location on the map. The latter is especially critical for groups that don't meet at a place with an address, such as a trail head for a hike, a put-in for a kayaking event, etc.

Tip for consumers:
Since I originally wrote this, I have found a great alternative: https://groups.place

What on earth do Meetup think they are doing. I join because I am interested in board games, photography and cooking and Meetup have decided to spam me with their political rubbish. If I wanted that I would sign up for it. Who do they think they are. Goodbye to Meetup.

The fee's for organisers are overpriced.
The members complain about paying $5 for an organisers time, value and organisation? Pathetic.
Too many low quality males everywhere.
The messaging system is poor, no option to delete message, the "event chat" is messy, confusing, unnecessary, not private and horrible.
The site itself is often crashing, glitching, not loading.
The site support is selfish, focused on their own wants and needs.
The RSVPs are mostly lonely indian and arab men with poor communication skills, add no value for others in terms of growth or connection.

In my last invoice as a hoster in Meetup, they increased double amount to pay for the service of six months. They must think we are all coorporate companies and not small business. It is ridiculous how Expensive it is.

Wow! A lot of negative reviews on here... I notice most of the naysayers tend to focus on an incident or anecdotal happening
My experiences have been pretty good especially if you link up with one that is active and has a few organizers and not just one or two. I n my homecity in Canada there is a wide selection to choose from and the larger general activities Meet-Ups have a wide following and a number of events. I've some good acquaintances and widened my social circle far more easily than striking up conversations in a bar.
I've traveled to other cities for and looked up local meet up group(s) and just show up and they've all been welcoming. Some may charge a couple dollars but I understand that there are costs associated with hosting the site and I'm fine with that.

We all know Meetup is a famous platform and a concept very well implemented, but I gotta say that both the website and the mobile keeps crashing and hanging!

The tech end of the website sucks and there isn't even a feedback section!

Nuts.

There are many meet ups that for all sorts of things from meeting new friends to depression groups. Meeting people is so hard these days weather dating or just finding like minded people you get along with. Meet ups allows you to go alone to a meet up and make new friends with no stress and if you are single and looking then at lest you can meet someone in a relaxed stress free environment and meet people face to face. This is a good thing why they are caning dating meet ups is beyond me at least you do not talk to someone for a month and get asked for money and find out the pension is fake and in Nigeria. Worst case if you do not like the people at a meet leave and find another meet up with people you do get along with.

I attempted to join a platonic massage group and was denied access after completing my profile where I indicated I was required in my profile. I then sent an email asking about the reason for my denial and the organizer blocked me from further communication. I then attempted to file a complaint on the Meet UP site multiple times and each attempt resulted in an error indicating the report could not be submitted. I suspect Meet Up management intentionally took down that functionality as the receive so many complaints based on their reviews. Great concept, terrible management engagement in troubled areas and lack of enforcement to organizers to be curteous and respwctful to their clients. Would have given them a lower score if possible.

Meetup is arbitrary with the enforcement of their own rules.

I built two different Meetups and in both cases they shut them down and they were both legitimate topics that have plenty of other people doing the same thing (I wasn't setting any precedents).

And the worst part - they just shut you off without giving you any tips or suggestions on how to become compliant in their system if they determine you're not. Just "POOF", you're deleted. What a crock of@#$%.
