“Andrei's French convo group is magnifique!”

I've really enjoyed attending the intermediate/advance conversation group led by Andrei on weekend mornings. The topics are always interesting and the Union Square Barnes and Noble is a great location. Looking forward to going again soon!

“Meetup is now Greedup”

Jim C.
10/13/24

I have been an organizer for my group on meetup for about seven years. In June, they jumped their pricing sky high, $44 for one month, $180 for six months, $300 for a year and encourage us to have members pay this. Granted, we have 700 members, but that burden should not be placed on them (even 50 cents). When it was about $100 per year, I could justify the cost. At $300, I cannot any longer. And by the way, that is just their standard pricing. Meetup PRO is even more ridiculous than this. When I tried to reach out to support about this, I literally got the cold shoulder. Not a single person contacted me from Meetup about this issue. That was the final straw. Sure like most greedy corporations, they will get their money somehow. We just won't be one of their supporting groups.

Las Vegas Modeling and Photography... I didn't know it was going to be handled like a professional business as it is only a meetup to help teach, educate, and meet other people in this. The organizer, Gia, seems to be a bit too forward with people if any issues having certain people photos that they like as their favorites same to her photographers but doesn't seem to be fair and reasonable. She tells me after I realized my single photo wasn't out there that this is the way it operates in the industry whether I like it or not, the way she is putting it. Now her last comment back to me was 'no one asked me to come to this' as it only is where anyone can come to this to see if it's a good fit or good group. I"m shocked of her taking charge how she handles customers coming in. Not sure if she's been doing this in charge thing for long or not. She has two other assistance on this program assisting her.

MeetUp provides ZERO features that could be used to track no-shows. MeetUp has zero incentive to keep groups fresh or encourage attendees to actually honor their RSVP and just keeps raising their price. It's clear that many "attendees" RSVP "yes" to signal interest, but have no intention of actually going. Just took over a group of 600+ members. 99% hadn't even looked at the group in a year. Conversion from member to RSVP is abysmal and chance of an RSVP attending is anywhere from 1 in 3 to 1 in 10, but MeetUp's pricing model is built on inflated numbers. I expect social distancing will take out many MeetUp groups... hopefully it will put MeetUp out of its miserable existence as well.

Without a doubt, one of the very worst, most incompetent front-end re-designs I have experienced in two decades. The administrator responsible for this disaster should be fired, immediately.
I maintain the meetup site for 2 or 3 meetups here in Portland, and it was easy to post new events on the old meetup.com site. But this one was useless: non-working tabs, wouldn't let me upload photos, half-finished events would disappear and I would start over, etc, etc. Absolutely the worst.

Most of the times It is extremely difficult to upload pictures, it tells you that your photos will be processed in few minutes but nothing happens despite changing the format and the size of the photos, it is very bad site

Since they have sold to wework.com things have gotten worse. Whatever I didn't like about Meet Up, the website function was pretty good. Now all that's gone and the supposedly "mobile friendly" version does not exist. Worse still, they are taking away document storage and calendar. Yet they still expect you to pay for this while they take functions away?!

I suggest that anyone could spin up a Wordpress site for 6.00 bucks a month, add in the social and calendar plugins, Buddypress, and away you go. Caio Meet Up!

Until they fix their new site, or switch back to the old one, I recommend avoiding this service. The new one might be better for the 60% of users on mobile devices, but the old one was definitely better for the other 40% of us, especially organizers. Ive been emailing Meetup support for weeks with problems, e.g. members not notified of meetups, map pins incorrect and unfixable, but Ive only received unhelpful automated responses. Im guessing they are overwhelmed with problems after their premature cutover their new format.

How else am I supposed to let people know my group exists if I am unable to PM them? Also, Facebook groups cost $0 and are just as good with the right people, so yeah I am not paying a web hosting fee just for a meetup group. Not when I can get a way better deal on Facebook or heck even on a full-fledged website I can use for everything I want.

Wow, Meetup really sucks! High fees and NO customer service. I was having a problem contacting the owner of a group via Meetup's e-mail system. I sent a message to them (had to wait two days for a response) and then received a short message from them that accused me of being a spammer. (I was trying to contact ONE owner of ONE group). When I responded back with the facts, they never responded. What a bunch of *(&^-heads!

After looking around online, I'm going to use GroupSpaces or BigTent. Listing here in case anyone else is also looking for alternatives.

From significantly changing the format (to one that sucks) to limiting options that helped alot (like deleting past scheduled events on the Meetup calendar) to limiting multiple user friendly options in the past, this company and their site has gone to $hit.

I like the site in general, but they send too many unsolicited emails and there is NO WAY TO STOP THEM. Believe me, I tried.
I deleted all my "Interests" to stop their auto-generated "New Meetup Groups" emails, but that didn't work. So I even deleted my account, thinking SURELY that would stop the emails. But no! I am STILL receiving them. Which really bothers me because that means they still have my personal information in their database. "Privacy invasion," anyone?

They offer NO CONTACT information for Customer Service. I. e., there IS no customer service. All they offer is an endless list of FAQs. I tried using their suggestion box but even that didn't work. I looked at their blog and message boards and tried commenting to postings from their programmers about "bugs" but couldn't. I am positively livid.

Will this work? Will someone at Meetup.com see my above comments and finally DO something to stop the emails? And actually delete all my personal information from their database?

I have not been using their service since I joined because it did not had the traffic I had in mind for such a brilliant group idea. I found it difficult or impossible to have your credit card removed from the account and I sent countless of email asking back for a refund since I was charged for a new month for an app I don't even use and not easy to deactivate. When they finally responded to get my refund, it was no help, they only asked if I wanted a discount to keep my account... even though I sent countless of messages even through the deactivation option, which you have to send a message to even get your account deactivated. A total scam... still waiting to get my refund.

Where to begin. First, I attempted to create a specific kind of health group. Meetup rejected it, stating I was doing it for business purposes only. Keep in mind that I wasn't attempting, nor was I going to attempt to charge anyone for anything. I only wanted to create a place for like-minded, health-conscious individuals to get together. This was AFTER I have found groups that charge people a fee to join AND after I attempted to join an existing Meetup, but was told by the organizer that I had to meet with her individually first, and would need to pay a fee for that initial visit. I referred her group to Meetup and was ignored. To date, her group is still in existence.

Instead of meetup - go to www.myactivitybuddies.com - it's completely free. You do not have to pay for groups or creating a profile. It's new and it's hip. You can IM or go to the main chat room, or use group chat.

I was on Meetup and was absent for a while because the group I used it for changed sites. I tried to start up again and they didn't allow me to and wouldn't even let me reset my password. Customer service was no help. They didn't even respond to my queries. They sent me terms of service instead of responses. This site is sorry.

This new app. Is not an improvement. It is harder to use than the old one. The app. Does not allow you to look at all past meetups. On your mobile phone. You could do so much more with the old app. It is not user friendly. I could do everything with the old mobile app. Now I have to wait to get to a computer. It stinks!

I went to two meetups in one day. One was fine the organizer a nice guy. The second for happy new beginnings was I thought also fine as it was a drive in movie. That's until the next day when the event organizer Lynne, messaged me To chastise me for not saying hello to her. I had never met her, no idea what she looked like, and as a disabled person not able to walk from car to car to search her out, yet she felt it necessary to ban me from her group bc I didn't formally introduce myself. I should mention she made no effort to come to my car either, just beware many of these organizers are still mentally in high school and full of drama. Which as an adult I don't appreciate so be prepared for a lot of high school theatrics.

If you use this site for just simple meetings, it may work. Unfortunately I wouldn't know because my account was disabled after ONE day. I was using it for business and networking, and how do you network without speaking to people? So I attempt to communicate with members of this site, and was immediately blocked. Don't have a business networking section if you aren't allowed to network! Simple as that! I'm not a spammer and I'm not a salesman, no one could buy anything off of me even if they wanted to. So for them to block me for spam is ridiculous. Stay away from this if you want your reputation intact.

The people running Meetup and taking IT decisions are as incompetent as they come... They roll out idiotic changes... and today, 3 of my co-organizers were DELETED by their system... Not sure how many people got the same treatment but this is NOT ACCEPTABLE... Lucky for me, my renewal was due for March 19th... Which I cancelled... And I sent an email to all my members to contact me directly to my email, I will just make a website that will support our group.

We started out with a great site, but the they changed Everything without warning every month or so. This last year of 2017, it has gotten so bad that our members and the members of 500 other clubs are leaving! I could no longer use the maps to edit, they only allow one picture at a time to be uploaded, and you can't edit RSVPs as an admin i got an email from their support manager explaining that they are aware of the map issue and she pretty much was begging me to get everyone to push Meetup to make this right. It was fine in the beginning but it is increasingly getting worse and they are charging us for it. I want my money back and the genious behind this change to be fired! This is the 2nd time that I have listed a meetup page. I figured when no one who joined ever RSVPd for the 1st one that no one was into it. But why join then? So I deleted it and meetup played their game of taking my money after telling me first you have to try and get someone to take over. Um, really? It finally got deleted. Here it is year or more later, totally different meetup, 29 people join... not a single one RSVPs for what I scheduled. Smh. I started looking at others... funny thing, no one was going theirs either. So who is maintaining meetup.com? I think it must be nobody and the system is not working. Why would people join groups and not show up? I sent welcome emails... I got 1 response. Really? I started a discussion. No one joined in. Does this not seem a bit odd? I think its very odd. Then reading other reviews adds to it. Does anyone know a class action lawyer? I bet they can contact meetup employees who are hiding from us so that we cant get any help.

Meetup claims they are against pedophilia -- but if you post an event against a public figure with ties to pedophilia -- Meetup harasses you, forbids the event, and tries to get you taken off the platform.
Meetup does NOT believe in free speech. They believe in their own perverted pedophilia-friendly agenda, and that's what they want to promote.

Meetup worked great for three years. I ran/Organizer an online Astrology study group on meetup. A month or two ago, early 2022, I get notified by a friend who was trying to rejoin our Meetup group that after doing all the steps necessary including receiving a note from meetup that the organizer will be contacting you; her join never materialized. I did not receive an email and she did not show as a member. At my request, she took screenshots of all the steps so I could send them to Meetup help/support. I have since had the same experience with tow people who thought they had joined but never showed as new member -- and I was never emailed.

This was my first time using help/support. There is no telephone number and no live chat. Took me a few hours poking around the confusing maze of Meetup help/support to figure out how to write a message about my problem -- there was a ton of faq answers that did not help.

After a thread of emails to Meetup help/support I realize there is not help or support and that the meetup site/software is buggy.

Another supposedly nonpartisan organization, Meetup.com, is virtue-signaling in response to the President's effort to restrict the immigration of Islamic terrorists. Ironically, the group's founding was partly inspired by the 9/11 bombings by--you guessed it--Islamic terrorists (http://observer.com/2011/01/the-long-and-curious-history-of-meetupcom/).
