I just purchased a pair of Birkenstocks and the seller informed me they accidentally (huh?) sold them but had another pair just like them. Then they ghosted me after I asked what that meant. Mercari eventually refunded me but it appears the seller has done this several times. It states each time the buyer canceled the transaction. What? Where is the accountability of the seller who failed to send an item or communicate? It doesn't impact their seller rating at all…still 5 stars. They really need to rethink this as it gives no warning to the next buyer that a seller is completely sketchy.
Initially customer service gave me some trouble due to mistaken identity, however the (frustrating) problem was resolved. I must say that I enjoy the simplicity of Mercari. It is a more streamlined method of buying and selling than Ebay.
I wandered over from eBay as a buyer and I really like Mercari. I've had only one issue, which the seller did not ship, but I was refunded promptly.
I notice a lot of the complaints here are either from a single bad experience, sometimes directed at a specific seller. Often it appears that buyers do not realize what sellers have to do, or that they're humans as well and make mistakes (and buyers very often scam sellers, so sellers can get jaded fast).
Items ship with tracking, if tracking shows the item is delivered you've got 3 days to give the seller feedback or tell them something went wrong. If after 3 days you don't do anything, then it automatically gives your feedback and once the seller leaves you feedback as well, then they get paid.
It's a system that encourages honesty and politeness (although I can see that doesn't extend to some, whether they've had a bad day or who knows what.) All in all, I've been using the site and like it.
I've used Mercari quite a bit. Better than ebay in my opinion. Less hassle unless you are a buyer. The rules are too loose. You can literally mark shipped immediately after a sale. Then you have 7 days for them to show tracking on top of a few days with the post office. Then after showing in transit you have the original delays with shipping now on top of what was slow already. You might get your item in a month just to find out all your items are broken and then the slow process of convincing you need a refund through USPS. Been doing this a long time, over 800 happy customers on this site alone... buyers need to be treated better. Shipping for me doesn't take more than 48 hours and I run an entire Auction House service shipping hundreds of items every week. These sellers play the lazy game, package poorly and I'm don't buying. Great site to sell... and that's good business. Buyers, tough luck with getting your items, MAYBE.
As a seller it's ok. You know your fees upfront and listing is easy. I can't stand the rating or feedback system. Any buyer who gives me poor feedback gets blocked unless I actually deserved it. Blocking is easy. I've only tried to deal with customer service once and it's almost impossible to get a hold of a live person.
I have used Mercari for years and typically have no issues. I am a seller. The problems arise when there is a shipping issue or if you need to contact mercari at all. If you select a shipping label that turns out to be too small once you package the item completely you have to cancel the sale and hope the customer will repurchase it once you listed again. They don't offer a way to upgrade your shipping label through them. They also give false information about upgrading the label at the post office. Which you cannot do, unless you want to repay the full price of the label. It also takes eight to 10 hours for a response to each statement you send. Most recently I tried to provide feedback that I was given the wrong information by multiple agents and was given an answer to questions I had never asked about delivery dates. Again, if you can manage to have no issues, it's a nice way to earn some extra money. But if you run into trouble, God help you.
I've been working with Mercari for over a year. Let me say that different, I've been working FOR MERCARI. I'm easy going and organized, yet this company seems to think they can mess around with you at every stage of the sale. They are POOR communicators and don't express much value the customers or the sellers. Especially the sellers!
Too many times, I've tried to write to them to only get a generic message back. It is like talking to a computer writing them. And, it gets you NO WHERE, until hours or days later they decide you were correct all along. Emailing them is like talking to the wall.
Disappointing is the word I'd use to describe their performance. It always takes them too long to get it right. Shows little care for sellers. Disappointed, and cost me money.
I haven't had any bad experiences with Mercari. I just wish the standard search engine results were only for items for sale, and then you have the option to include sold items (I'm not sure why you would want that as the default).
I buy and sell constantly. I have never received less than 5 Stars but every once in awhile you come across Nasty Sellers like Buttonmania. It's a shame because most people on Mercari are great and there to make a few dollars and keep people happy.
This is a decent place to buy and sell your new or used items. I have sold quite a few products on the app and everything went smoothly for me. I like that they only give people 3 days to report any issues before the payment goes through. It makes it harder for people to scam. I do think that there needs to be better customer service, especially for sellers. It would also be better if I was able to promote my items without lowering the price.
This web site is terrible. They have pictures of the item but sends you something totally different. For example. The bags are clearly vintage but you receive a brand new fake bag plastic bag. They have so many sellers websites doing this. They are are usually shipping out of Chino, California. You order one thing and receive another. They don't refund money instead they credit.
I recently requested a return for my purchase that arrived with a strong odor of mothballs. I told that I am allergic to chemicals. They denied my request stating that odors are subjective an are now excluded from returns their updated return policy and that their decision was final.Yet smells odors is what I had selected to submit my request for return. They have not replied to my response that to their denial. In my reply I stated that I get a migraine from chemicals and can't even use them in my home.
Absolutely Horrible Experience with Mercari. I would have given a zero star if I could. I purchased three vintage Hersey bowls as a Christmas gift from a seller, the three bowls arrived broken into pieces. The seller was extremely rude and not helpful. The box was not marked fragile, the seller had wrapped the ceramic bowls in white box wrapping paper and stacked them on top of each other. The box arrived undamaged with indicates it had not been tossed around by the shipping company but they were broken because of poor packing and not being protected. I paid a total of $34 plus shipping for the three bowls and wish I had kept my money. I normally do a google search of company ratings prior to spending money but I didn't do it this time and I regret it. Google ratings have them as such: Bad customer service, No support if there is a problem with buyer and seller, too many scammers, counterfeit items sold, high shipping cost, 5,684 customer complaints with Better Business Bureau. I've experienced all of the above!
I have bought many things but recently ALL kinds of hidden fees --- I was supposed to pay $29 plus $3.99 shipping which was disclosed --- All of a sudden I was paying another fee for processing my payment? Another SERVICE FEE? What -- suddenly I'm pay almost $39
NOT GOOD
I made an offer of $255 for an item at 8:45am on Dec 18 during Mercari's Zero Selling Fee promotion. Mercari showed me a total payment of $290.79 ($255 + $9.40 processing fee + $26.38 taxes) which was fine with me as it was under my budget of $300.
The seller accepted my offer on the same day but my credit card was billed $316.29 (see below) because Mercari tacked on a $25.50 service fee. Mercari said that the Zero Selling Fee promotion expired at 11:59am on 12/18 and the seller accepted my offer offer at 5pm on 12/18.
Sellers have 24 hours to accept an offer. I can't control when the Seller chooses to accept my offer (or even if they do). I can't only control when I made the offer — and I made it when the promo was still in effect. Mercari confirmed that by computing a total purchase cost of $290.79 that excluded the Selling Fee. Yet it went ahead and charged me the $25.50 selling fee. That's false advertising.
I've gone back & forth with Mercari Support and they claim it's the "system" and they can't overrule the system. Which is BS. Mercari needs to refund me $25.50.
One star is me being generous.
Beware when selling items on Mercari.
They provide cover for scammers.
I sold a laptop which was then returned for bogus reasons (Mercari instantly approved the return). When I received the item everything looked okay. I set the laptop back up for myself but noticed that my graphics card wasn't working. After days of troubleshooting I realized that the buyer had switched out my motherboard with a damaged one. I know this because the motherboard has a completely different serial number. I've owned the laptop from new and no one has been inside that machine while it was in my hands. I have the original box and stamp showing the correct serial number. Upon further investigation I found out that the motherboard isn't even the correct model for my laptop. Despite overwhelming evidence of this fraud Mercari will do nothing because it wasn't bought to their attention within 24 hours of me receiving the returned laptop. This scam is specifically engineered to make reporting the problem within that time an impossibility. I'm left with a badly functioning machine that I can't even sell because it doesn't have the correct motherboard. Mercari couldn't care less. I've reported it to them multiple times. Each time they point to their 24 hour nonsense. They do not care. Save yourself the hassle and DON'T SELL OR BUY WITH MERCARI.
I purchased a soldering kit. It arrived while I was on vacation. When I got home and opened the package, I found that it would not turn on. I contacted Mercari and they said they would not let me return it because they have a six day window for returns. No exceptions, despite seven email exchanges. I contacted the seller, they would would only give me a $20 refund. Horrible policies and insulting customer service.
If a seller ghosts and doesn't ship your order you have to wait 15 days before your money is refunded. There is also a $2 transaction fee to transfer funds to your bank account.
This company has zero integrity as far as backing up their responsibility as a consignment liaison. When I received an item that looked like it came out of a dumpster and not "like new" as described, I reached out to the seller as well as Mercari without success. I will never be on this site again.
I bought item on Mercari and requested return within 3 days because it looked different on the pic than what I received. They denied my return and I stuck with an item I hate and 1k less in my packet. Be very careful with them. I know I'm done buying from them.

Answer: Good question. Poshmark charges a ridiculous $6.99 shipping fee for everything, regardless of weight. Only thing is, you cannot mail anything for less than $2.66 but I see your point
