Initially customer service gave me some trouble due to mistaken identity, however the (frustrating) problem was resolved. I must say that I enjoy the simplicity of Mercari. It is a more streamlined method of buying and selling than Ebay.
This web site is terrible. They have pictures of the item but sends you something totally different. For example. The bags are clearly vintage but you receive a brand new fake bag plastic bag. They have so many sellers websites doing this. They are are usually shipping out of Chino, California. You order one thing and receive another. They don't refund money instead they credit.
My Credit Card was compromised over a month ago I was sent a new card and I uploaded a different card to Mercari, they left this 48 hour notice it would be resolved that was 200 hours ago and
4 emails to them, nothing, nada, no one answers, I decided to close my Account, they locked my Account, I can't transfer my balance because they won't fix the problem. I just want rid of them. I buy and sell and the postage is a rip off, if the price comes out less than say $7.40 they have the priced fixed at, we will never know because they will pocket the difference, if the postage turns out to be less than $7.40, when we mail out the package we get a receipt with no weight on it because Mercari issues a code on your phone when you take it to the post office and those Postage rates stops a lot of people from buying your product because by the time you add up the cost of the product plus the postage it would be cheaper to go out and buy the merchandise, so you have to sell your stuff at rock bottom prices on Mercari. At least try to cut a deal with the USPO. BACK TO FB MARKET!

Mercari refused to refund my money even after filling out their endless form and sending 4 pics which they demand

When reaching out after receiving an broken item the service was horrible and they scammed me out of my 50$. Terrible company do NOT order with them.
Mercari? More like Mercreepy. Makes ebay look like Saks Fifth Avenue. It's a den of thieves. Do business there and you'll regret it.
Too too many keyword spammers. It's totally out of control. Mercari does nothing about it unless you have multiple people reporting these listings.
Tip for consumers:
I think Mercari should have an option to report a seller for keyword spammers as well as the products they sell.

I decided to switch my retail store to this online platform after hearing about it. Everything sounded good I spend weeks taking pictures and putting detailed descriptions of my items. Started off really well. Then I get a message someone made a report on my account of a counterfeit item which there was not. But hey buyer is always right according to them. No proof needed just a vague message by some racist customer service loser. Then a few weeks later I have a return being processed when asked why they approved a return since their guidelines say if the items were as described as pictured there no returns. Again without proof just a vague message that I sent the customer the wrong item. I received the item back and as I knew already was exactly as described. I asked the customer what was her reason for return and she didn't like the fit. Not in line with Mercari policy at all. Okay I'm business we take losses that's not our fault sometimes. A few weeks later I get a message there was another report on a counterfeit item which happened to be nail polish out of all things. I requested to know how a nail polish can be counterfeit if I have assigned no brand to it. They then sent me a message that my account was closed. Once again, in a vague racist way. Mind you the day this happened I took a photo of my ID to get instant direct deposit when this phony claim came up. It's not a coincidence. This company is definitely racist, unethical and quite frankly dumb since they deactivated an account with only good ratings that they are making money from on both the buyer and seller platform of the account. Before you put in your hard work to set up an account think twice. As a side note if you sell an item and it's already delivered to the buyer who then reports it as counterfeit. Say good bye to your $10,000 Diamond ring, Chanel bag or whatever the item is because the buyer gets to keep it at no charge. Company who scams honest sellers and caters to scammers is reprehensible. Companies who make money in a negative way and cause anguish to so many is not one who will flourish.
Than other c2c. It even provides customer support which other may have none. Just need to be careful of the sellers though.
Hey Arthur,
Thanks so much for all the support!
We're happy to hear you're loving our marketplace! As a team we work hard to make sure our buyers and sellers are satisfied with their experience.

Mercari presents itself as an alternative to eBay. Well, if you like problems then it's the alternative for you! I purchased an item from a seller which Mercari believed was fraudulent. Immediately after I purchased, Mercari cancelled the order and refunded me. You must be thinking, "How nice, why would anyone give a negative review for that?" Because, Mercari then proceeded to block my account and demand that I complete an absurdly complicated process of "identity verification," which included downloading some useless app. Somehow it made sense in their minds to punish me because the seller might have been fraudulent. I come to find out, this is nothing new, but their standard procedure. Having had enough of these fools, I wanted to delete my account. Then I come to fins out, it is nearly impossible. Supposedly there is supposed to be a tab where you can "request" that Mercari delete your account. I followed the instructions, and yet, such a tab did not exist in my account settings. Therefore I needed to call their Palo Alto office. But when I called for assistance, there was no one via any extension, even though by law they must have a staff member manning lines such as the fraud prevention department. But, even when I tried their fraud prevention department, I still only reached a prerecorded voicemail, asking me to leave a message and they will "get back to me as soon as they can." Can you imagine if you were actually frauded on this website? Good luck ever getting any live human assistance! In the middle of the day you can't get a single staff member to answer calls? Please avoid this platform at all costs. Pay extra to buy on eBay or Amazon. Try Poshmark. But whatever you do, please don't give these scam artists a penny of your money. On another note, I would hate to think what happened to sellers which get on Mercari's bad side. I would venture to guess none of those people never receive any sort of fair due process, and their funds are abruptly confiscated by these scam artists.
Tip for consumers:
Do not waste your time, because man sellers are fradulent.

Mercari is my favorite app to sell and buy on. Because customer service isn't the best, it's up to the buyer to check out ratings of the seller. Why buy from someone who already has bad ratings and then get upset when you're not satisfied? I have only had great experiences by selling to people who obviously understand the rating system and have nothing but great ratings. Items you cannot buy on here safely regardless of ratings are makeup, electronics, and accessories for phones. Many times they are used, broken, defected, or cheap. There is a reason Sephora and Apple exist-- Mercari should only be used for secondhand items such as books they're tired of, clothing that is old or not the correct size, gently worn shoes, and minor household items or toys. Do not buy anything that is considered "designer" on here-- it is most likely the $1 EBay unauthentic edition bought from China and resold for $50. Do not sell to buyers who do not have ratings. They may ask for a refund and attempt to scam you. Only buy items that obviously have time put into them-- if a shirt is wrinkly and on the bedroom floor when it's pictured, can you really be upset when it comes smelling bad and has pet hairs all over it? Only buy from people who put effort into their photos and descriptions. If it does not have a description, ask questions instead of blindly buying.
Responsibility for transactions is up to the buyer and seller, knowing how customer support is. If someone even has one bad rating, don't do it unless the rater themselves stated it was accidental. If you follow the guidelines I've shared, you will only have a happy experience on Mercari.
Idk why so many people say theres no way to talk to a real person or that customer service doesnt answer phone... I actually just called them last night. I was having an issue with the instant pay option and the nice man I spoke with in their C. S. got me on the right track within minutes AND he found out someone had opened another mercari account with the same debit card I have linked to my real account. There was no issues, he just unlinked it from fake/scam account and deleted that account and I was able to transfer my money to my bank account within 5 min. I've been warned I believe... 3 times now. Because in description of some posts I'd ask potential buyers to please mess me via fb. Found out quickly that's not allowed. But I buy and sell on there ALL the time. And, knock on wood, no issues with any buyers yet, and all items purchased have arrived in exact condition described. But, I also belong a certain community of people who buy and sell from the same companies I do, and for the most part they all legit. I actually sell on fb as well, but I find I prefer the safety and 100% money back guarantee from mercari and the fact I can print labels right from home as soon as someone buys. Goodluck to everyone else I guess... I feel like alot of these complaints are from people who tried scamming someone and mercari didnt fall for their bs. Just my opinion.
I've never had an online buying experience as maddening and generally unethical as with Mercari. I purchased what I thought was a painting for $200. A beat-up, moldy cardboard print arrived. I immediately contacted the seller, no reply. I thought, fine, they must be out, I'll begin the return process as this product was not worth $2 let alone $200. I had to answer a questionnaire as to why I wanted to return this item vs here's the information you need for the return. The information then goes to a caseworker (some random person, possibly at lunch also texting with friends, working on the side for Mercari) to determine the viability of the claim? I thought, OK, whatever, this is not what I thought I was ordering, they'll see that and the return will be processed. Instead, I received a "the seller met their criteria and we cannot issue a refund" notice. I was genuinely taken aback by this response. This piece of garbage has actual mold on it, for $196! Essentially, Mercari is a gambling site. If you don't get what you ordered, too bad. I then begin a long string of emails with random people at Mercari with various titles communicating in the same infuriatingly rehearsed manner "We really appreciate your understanding in this manner and we're sorry it didn't work out for you". On a few occasions, it was recommended that I participate in an unethical reselling of this product, mold and all, to someone else through Mercari? Just pass the problem along? As I said to one of the many people (who was probably watching television during the email exchange), "this experience is not unlike being aggressively cut off in traffic, the other driver mouthing the words "I'm sorry" whilst simultaneously giving you the finger. Mercari is an AWFUL place to deal with. I truly feel like I was stolen from, in plain sight.
Tip for consumers:
NEVER USE THIS SITE, YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED
I bought a monster high doll from a girl who was "just cleaning out her closet". I offered a certain amount, she counter offered, I accepted and the sale was instantly charged to my credit card. Then I waited. And waited. And waited… Mercari sent her nudges to ship… I messaged her after a week… she said she was sorry she intended to ship Monday, she'd been busy with work. I said that's fine! Monday came and went, no shipping. I asked her Tuesday did she have any intention in shipping the doll… then she canceled the sale. The money was refunded, but that's not the problem. The problem was I wanted that doll for my kids birthday… had plenty of time to get it, walked away from BETTER PRICED DOLLS because I'd already committed to this one… and to have her just decide to cancel, with no contact or explanation is annoying. And there's nothing I can do… I can't leave her a bad review, or even a neutral review. I can't contact mercari and say "Hey, this sucks…"
All I can do is delete the app and refuse to use it ever again, which is unfulfilling and unsatisfying. For this reason I decided to come here to at least warn people, while I personally was not scammed, they really don't do anything to make sure sellers are professional. There are no repercussions if they decide "Meh, I think I don't feel like going to the post office this month", and there's no way to contact customer service that I saw… if you want a guaranteed sale, there are plenty of sites that aren't Mercari to shop through!
Mercari is permanently off my app repertoire!

Well, I just started with Mercari about two weeks ago. I had downloaded their app over two years ago, but had always sold on Poshmark. Poshmark was doing kind of the same thing with the buyers claiming the items were damaged or not what they ordered, and they would always give them a refund under any circumstance, even if you had proof showing them that they were lying. But now, thankfully, they actually listened to their sellers and will let the person keep the item, they get a refund, and then the seller still gets their payment.
I think Mercari should be a little more like Poshmark in this way... like, actually listen to the people who are making them all this money? It might help drive up sales just a little bit, don't ya think?
I'm really worried... I sold a few items on Mercari in the short two weeks I have been listing items, and so far, guess what? No ratings yet... I'm worried they're just going to do exactly what everyone is saying here... ask for a refund and they'll just give it to them WITHOUT paying the seller? It is false advertisement to say, "Hey, if you sent this item as described, you are guaranteed a payment." Well, how do you prove that? Pictures right? Because our phones have automatic time stamps that have the date and time on them, that should be enough, right?
I really wish I would've read the reviews before I got started with them... At least I still have my Poshmark account, but they charge WAY too much for shipping and 20 percent is awful, which means people overcharge for their items to make up for the loss in shipping and their fees, and the shipping cost seems to be rising exponentially. Why can't we just have an honest company out there?
I guess for now I'll just stick with Poshmark if Mercari rips me off, but be certain, I will submit a report to the BBB. Ugh!
IT IS VERY HARD TO GET ASSISTANCE, PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT ACTIVE ON THE SITE FOR MONTHS AND WOULD NOT RESPOND TO ANY MESSAGES ARE STILL ALLOWED BY MERCARI.

For anyone ever thinking about selling on mercari; don't. Let me tell you a little story. Things were going great, I was finally selling and getting all 5 star reviews. I decided to buy something from another seller. They were designer jeans I'd had before so I knew they would fit. I purchased. They show up, and they're not the same item as pictured. They're 2 sizes smaller, a different color and had damage not listed. I was very nice and reached out for a return. The seller refused the return. Mercari sided with them. So I decided to dispute the charge with my bank. I felt it was not right I didn't receive what I paid for. Well, 24 hours later my account is locked. This was the 19th of May. Mercari has forced me to cancel my dispute, is holding the funds from the money I've earned, and stopped responding to unlock my account. I've spent hours, over 45 messages to mercari, 4 calls on the phone with my bank, and still nothing. I was forced to cancel the dispute AND they still kept my account locked. The phone number they use is not real. I've had friends in different states try it. There so nobody to reach out to. You send a help message and days later, maybe get a response. 99% of the time it's and irrelevant bot response. Screenshots are from when I actually got a person. Even worse customer service!
I've contacted and filed a report with the BBB and at pissed consumer. The worst part is, while you're account is locked, they will still sell your items but you won't get the money! I figured out how to put my shop on vacation so they can't do that but not before 2 items sold. If you don't ship them your seller rating drops automatically. The last picture is what happens when I try to deposit my money.
Moral of the story, don't use them. I'm so upset because
1. I need the money.
2. It took months to finally start selling and built up reviews.
3. I'm just being bullied by mercari at this point and given the run around.
I recently purchased an item from a Mercari seller. It had been sometime since I purchased and item and did not notice that I still had my old office address as shipping address. My item was delivered Friday afternoon. I was not able to pick it up until Monday because I work late and the building is closed on the weekend. I did not have a chance to fully inspect the headset until Tuesday evening. It did not turn on immediately so I thought it may need to be charged. I noticed that it would not turn on after 3 hours of charging. Then I noticed that the only way I could get it to work was by leaving it plugged into the charger? On Wednesday, I attempted to submit a return request (defective item) through Mercari only to find out that Mercari automatically closed my purchase on Monday! They said it was because a buyer only has 72 hours after delivery of an item to request a return. If the buyer does not indicate a response after 72 hours, Mercari automatically closes the purchase and releases the money to the seller. I messaged them about the time frame and how I could not even pick up my item because of the building being closed over the weekend. They just replied reiterating their '72-hour policy'. I responded that they should at least extend to 5 or 7 days to allow for weekend and holidays. They replied again with how they understood that I was unhappy with their response but again quoted their '72-hour policy'. When I tried to respond with another 'rant', I find that Mercari AUTOMATICALLY marked that issue as 'Resolved' and suggested I respond to their customer service survey. Your response is limited to 1-5 stars and comment is limited to 100 characters? Instead, I just sent another email to support and advised that I am cancelling my Mercari account and limiting my online purchases to other major online markets who provide better customer service.
Tip for consumers:
Very unfair return policy. I am suspecting that their customer service reps are 'AI' reps instead.

This is Mercari: The Selling App. The fast and easy way to sell or buy almost anything.
Please note that you're able to request a return in-app for any order you receive by going to the Order Status screen, tapping the question mark in the top right corner, and selecting “How to request a return”. Our return policy is that a buyer may request a return within 3 days of confirmed delivery if the transaction has not been rated and meets one of our return criteria.
Although we're unable to process a second return claim or review return decisions, we'd be happy to take a closer look at your transaction or account via the in-app Help Center or email support address. If you have the time, please feel free to reach out so we can assist!
