Initially customer service gave me some trouble due to mistaken identity, however the (frustrating) problem was resolved. I must say that I enjoy the simplicity of Mercari. It is a more streamlined method of buying and selling than Ebay.

This web site is terrible. They have pictures of the item but sends you something totally different. For example. The bags are clearly vintage but you receive a brand new fake bag plastic bag. They have so many sellers websites doing this. They are are usually shipping out of Chino, California. You order one thing and receive another. They don't refund money instead they credit.

Mercari is easily the worst selling platform I've ever used, especially in terms of transparency, ease of use, and overall profit. I've got a perfect 5 star rating, never had any serious issues with individual transactions but overall I truly despise this platform. They will not protect shipments that don't use their in-house labels, and they absolutely overcharge you for those shipping labels - even after the item has been delivered they will take extra shipping fees without providing any evidence or reason. Their "sale" alert is the same notification as all of their other petty BS 'reminders' so it's EXTREMELY annoying to think I've got an alert for a new sale but it's just Mercari with a greedy message encouraging me to list more items. Their payment system takes about an entire week to release your funds (it costs extra to get instant transfer, & 2.00 to transfer less than 10.00 - meaning there are probably hundreds of accounts at any given time with money held in escrow that nobody wants to pay 2.00 to get because they're waiting for their next sale). You cannot even access your funds until 3 days have passed from delivery date. If you try to buy something using these "funds" Mercari will automatically debit your payment method on file instead of using your Mercari balance first. I have also learned it is a platform for the most desperate of buyers, since most everyone lowballs on offers and won't respond to counteroffers. Their algorithm buries your items after about 24 hours if you don't constantly keep lowering the price, so it's widely known you have to manually resist inventory every so often to actually make profitable sales, which is a lot of stupid extra work. All in all I hope, with all of my heart, that Mercari goes bankrupt and the sick greedy people who created it are sent back to the status quo to be completely forgotten and eternally lost in the anals of history forever yeah yeah I know what I wrote & I stand by it 100%.

Tip for consumers:
use literally any other selling platform than Mercari! it is outdated and poorly managed

The item I purchased arrived inoperable, Macari makes it impossible to apply for a refund. This is my 3rd day attempting a refund, they don't provide ANY refunds BEWARE, do not buy using Macai!

This is THE most buyer un-friendly internet shopping experience I've ever had. I bought 2 items from this site, both of which were advertised as new, and both of which were meant as gifts. The items were both clearly used, one was had the washing instruction tag faded away and also piling. Not new. The other was dirty with spots and piling and had a couple smashed up dollars in one pocket. Not new. Not even washed. Yuck. They give you a tiny time frame to "rate" your seller, but they do not inform you that, if you miss the time frame, they will just randomly rate it for you and you will have no recourse. Since the items had arrived on weekends, and/or were at work, they could not be retrieved immediately. I bought the second item maybe a day later than the first, so, knowing their horrible policy, I even emailed them to tell them NOT to rate the second item for me since I had not received it. They went again and did so anyway, released my money to the seller, giving me no recourse.

Be aware: To return anything, you need to provide photos of the item, packaging, why you find fault, basically prove that you (the buyer) are not a liar, and they give you 24 hours to do so or else they close the account. Why they would assume that the BUYER is the liar, I'm really not sure. Anyway, maybe this process works for the middle schoolers, but for adults who work, and especially those who travel, this is ridiculous. Then they are quick to close your account and I think someone mentioned "annoying runaround." Annoying! They even had the nerve to bounce my emails back to me when I sent them all the pictures and info! Bad for buyers. Terrible for buyers. Don't buy from them.

We're sorry to hear you had a couple of transactions that were auto-rated because the rating period expired. Per our Terms of Agreement, Mercari provides buyers 3 days to review and rate a transaction, not including the date of delivery. On the 4th day, the seller can then request a rating in app to have the transaction rated in 24 hours if the buyer fails to complete the transaction. I'm sorry this period of time did not work for you, but we are required to complete transactions and release funds to your seller after the rating period has elapsed. Please also note, if you and your seller come to an agreement to extend the rating period, Mercari is more than happy to acknowledge the agreement.

When it comes to returns, we do request photos in 24 hours, but will extend the period if the requested extension is not unreasonable. We like to process the return requests as quickly as possible as to not keep the seller in the dark about their item, or earnings. They let sellers commit fraud. Selling things they act like they have and the mail a totally different item to buyers.

I started sell some stuff on Mercari recently and within a month I have decided to quit selling there. I had some Louis Vuitton items and had some users giving me unbelievably low offers so I had to ignore or reject them. My items are perfectly authentic, with receipt or certificate of authentication. However, after I rejected several sellers my items kept getting deleted. I asked the CS why, and only answer I got so far is "multiple users have flagged your listings as counterfeit. Please refrain from selling counterfeit items", and I cannot even relist the items. What more I can do when the items have receipt or been authenticated?!? And they say that if items that have been "reported" as fake sells, they will keep the money not giving it to me... What a scam! I am guessing that some people might have flagged my items as a retaliatory action, but Mercari don't even bother investigating the "counterfeit" claims and automatically accept their claims. Of course, that way they can make more money by stealing from the victims (in this case the sellers)! I am no longer selling on Mercari, even thougn their low commission was what attracted me at first. Higher commission is worth paying for the safety. I would rate zero stars if I could.
And after reading all the other review by sellers... Now I think it was a blessing in disguise that my items were flagged before being sold! The nasty buyers could just go ahead and purchase, then claiming that they are "fake", receiving all their money back and keeping the item. I am not selling any item on this app until they implement more seller protections and control scammers. Like other company that has item shipped for their authentication center first or sellers can first send proof of authenticity (photos, receipts, authenticators' opinions, etc.) to Mercari first then list the item guaranteed by Mercari to be authentic (this way any dishonest buyers that claims items to be fake can be flagged for future reference).

The warning includes a statement describing how we will hold funds for 14 days in the event that your buyer requests a return. We do not hold the funds for our gain, but rather to protect the buyer in the case the item is confirmed as counterfeit. I AM SICK AND TIRED OF MERCARI NOT CARING ABOUT ITS SELLERS! So USPS either lost my package or is purposely taking their time shipping it.

It included a M. A. C. Lipstick. I kept in touch with the customer about it. Two weeks later nothing changed on USPS part.

I get a message from Mercari stating that they deleted my item. They legit stated "Your item has been lost in transit, so we've cancelled the transaction to refund your buyer. Please work with USPS to help locate the item." I tell them that I already filed a missing claim five days ago and said to send it to the addressee (so I can get my payment) and now there is no way of changing the address. I mentioned how unfair it would be if the buyer received the lipstick, their money back, and I get nothing in return.

I stated that I have a screenshot of what was supposed to be my payment after the item is received. They told me to send the screenshot so they can see what they can do and that if it confirms I sent the item before Mercari cancelled it and refunded the buyer, they'll take a closer look. I sent it. Then they responded saying, "Since the label was never scanned, we are unable to release funds for the transaction.

I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. Please keep working with the carrier to file a claim or locate the item. I know this is frustrating, and I appreciate your understanding. Eddy- Team Mercari".

How are you going to know the inconvenience it causes me and still not offer a refund to me as well? The label had to be scanned to even go to pre-shipment in the first place and for me to get the notification that it did.

So at the end of the day, the buyer will get a free M. A. C Lipstick, and I get nothing in return. Mercari needs to shut down.

I ordered a fragile item from Mercari. The seller shipped it to me wrapped in paper towels and a (used) dish towel. It arrived in pieces. I immediately went to the Mercri website to request a refund. I filled out a form, and supplied the requested photos (5 minimum, according the the site; I sent six): of the label, the packaging, the item, front, back and side views. I then hit submit, and got an error message. I tried several times, always unable to submit. I went back and reduced the photos. Still the site would not accept my request. I tried calling; got a message saying to leave a message and they'd call back. No one ever did. In frustration, I tried to use a drop down menu to submit my request another way. Since the site was glitching, I chose "my app isn't working." I got a reply saying my complaint should be directed to Returns, so I went back and tried again. No success. About three days later, I got an email with subject line "Service issue resolved," so I returned to the Mercari site to file my request. I was unable to do so, however, because my order was now marked "complete." Not only was I unable to request a refund, I was also unable to rate the seller (who, by the way, I tried to contact directly; she did not respond). When I complained to Mercari about this, I got two argumentative emails from a rep explaining to me that since I didn't submit my request within a three-day window of receipt, there's nothing they could do. Even after I sent screen shots that proved I'd tried the day of receipt, Mercari refused to budge. All it would've cost them to resolve, BTW, was $75, but I guess their rep's not worth that much. I'd give them MINUS FIVE STARS if that were an option. Let the buyer beware.

Tip for consumers:
Do not use this site. Both sellers and management unreliable.

None. Product shipped to me was a platter broken into several pieces. Could not be used and was discarded.

My 15 year old son purchased a iPhone X on the Mercado site. We received the phone only to find out it had a broken camera. We contacted the seller who said he would pay for the fix but he kept on saying " please mark it received" my son refused until he paid for the repair. What we didn't know was Mercari monitors the tracking number and after three days they mark it received and give the seller a 5 star rating. Once this happened the seller blocked us which made it impossible to contact him or write a review. We contacted mercari on 9 occasions explains the situation. On 5 of those calls I requested to speak with a supervisor which I was assured would contact me by the end of the business day. Not once did we receive a phone call or an email from a supervisor. Instead I received 4 emails from team members saying they were sorry but there is nothing they could do! Not once in the 9 times I contacted them and spoke to them did anyone say, " let me contact the seller to see if we could resolve this issue"! It's been two weeks since we received the phone and today we learned not only did the seller sell my son a defective phone he reported it stolen and collected the insurance money. The phone has now been shut down by AT&T and we were told it is the property of the insurance company and is it completely unusable! I called mercari back to let them know the additional information I just obtained and received an email 4 hours later saying sorry there's nothing we can do! This seller is scamming people using mercari's policy's and they won't do anything about it! You would be crazy to purchase anything using this site because they don't back the buyer at all! Maybe that's why they've received so many one star ratings!

As a seller, they have next to zero support. You have to send them a message and wait for a response. The issue doesn't get resolved and they simply close the case and claim it was resolved.
A buyer can bundle items from one seller. Mercari doesn't calculate the package weight accurately for the bundled items in which the seller is later on hit with the additional shipping charges from the post office. Mercari says to "keep the receipt for the extra charges and we will reimburse you." There is no receipt. The post office simply deducts it from you automatically after they discovered your package was overweight. Cancel the transaction, go back in, change all items to "free shipping and add into the price the actual cost to ship. The buyer again bundles and Mercari still charges for shipping. They also overcharge for shipping. They also don't always recognize meria mail and overcharge for such shipping. I have had to cancel my share of transactions in order to help my buyer with the appropriate shipping and the accurate shipping costs. Mercari takes approximately 13% of the sale as it is including the shipping. Garbage site! But look at the choices anymore. Not to mention how overpriced shipping is anymore.
Let me add, after reviewing some sales of mine, they actually take upwards of 30% of a sale! See a CD for $3 and they took 89 cents. Sold a bundle of CD's for $16 and they took exactly 16%.
I found a 1-888 number on their site to call for customer support but upon calling it has a lovely female voice recording stating that this feature is not available in my region. I'm in Florida, not exactly off the grid or out of the country. But kindly gives me the option to send my correspondence through e-mail or their message center. This site is a rip-off!

I am taking the time out of my day to leave a 1-star review for Mercari based on their obnoxious tactics to make unsubscribing or leaving their platform as complicated and time-consuming as possible, in hopes that you'll give up in the process and stay trapped in their system.

Receive the 500th email you didn't want from them. Now that you're already fed up, click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email. Did you think Unsubscribe links would take you to Unsubscribe places? Mercari didn't. You are taken to a logged out page where you have to log in, and good luck remembering your ancient credentials from that one time you used their obscure site years ago.

If you're determined, or still have the time to waste, go through all the steps now to reset your password. After running to your email, resetting the password, logging in, and getting a confirmation login code from your email, you might feel utterly close to deleting your abandoned account. Sorry to inform you that now, you're fishing around in the settings menu for the undetectable 'Close My Account' button.

It's been almost 10 whole minutes now. You search 'How to delete account' in the Help Center, to find that the functionality is *only available in the mobile app*. Do you see the gaslighting here? They're trying to get you to spend as much time fishing around in both their website AND their MOBILE APP before you are truly able to escape their clutches.

So my sorry searcher had to download their app, login, get another email login code, and finally find and click, Close My Account, just to be logged out and delete the app right away.

Anyone with a brain can see that this strategy is to get people with as much screen time in Mercari's product as possible, in hopes people will be distracted out of deleting their account by something triggering their ADHD, or by simply running out of time to find the exit. It's naive and deeply annoying. Yes, all companies want to attract and retain customers. But only some of them are pitiful enough do so with deception and sabotage. Your tactics are not lost on me.

I hope this review doesn't make you lose more customers than you were able to keep with your trap tactics.

I opened an Account with Mercari and posted several items and made a sale with one of them. Then Mercari Suspended my Account for whatever reason and won't telll me why. Their Customer Service is non existant and they owe me for the sale which is not instant payment as they advertised!. Then they sent me a notice that i was to scan my Passport, License and other US Documents on their app which did not work. I am a Disabled American Veteran and a Retired US Postal Worker of 31 Years and born in this country and feel insulted that they want Passport information. I have Accounts on LETGO and OFFERUP which have never asked me for Passport info. Maybe it is because i have a Spanish Name and think i am an Illegal Alien even though my Mother was French. I speak only English! I think this may be Racial Discrimination on their part. Their Customer Service does not Exist and they don't answer questions properly. Stay away form this Japanese Company if you don't want problems and use LETGO or OFFERUP! I may have to hire a Lawyer to get my money from this Shoddy Company!

Because Mercari is unable to guarantee a seller will ship a purchased item, we allow them to cancel transactions if they have troubles sending it off (so buyers can be reimbursed as quickly as possible). Rest assured we do watch and penalize accounts should they have a large number of unwarranted cancellations, though. Also please note that once a transaction is canceled, you'll automatically be reimbursed in your original payment method. Don't worry, your money is in safe hands. We won't release payment until we confirm the item has been delivered to you.

After buyer sent me an offer I stated that my price was firm. She purchased the next day. After I had shipped the order, minutes later she asked to cancel her order because she wanted to send me another offer. Which makes zero sense due to me already saying that my price was firm. My box of perfume was unopened sealed in plastic. Once she had received her order, she then opens it after peeling off the top part of the label. This was brand new! Labels don't come like that, especially high-end perfumes. She sent a message stating that she wants her money back that it's FAKE perfume. I then receive a buyer claim that I didn't have accurate info listed when sold. I 100% did! Pictures of every angle of the box clearly sealed, and all info stated. No questions asked upon purchasing "of course". Mercari sided with buyer, and approved the return. There is no way for me to contact Mercari to dispute, ask for more clarification about their decision. The simple fact is, this woman had buyers remorse, needed the money that she purchased my item with, didn't care for the scent, or just a scammer. Now... I will get back a opened box of perfume, with the label torn (so she could make a claim) with half of the bottle gone. I am beyond appalled on how Mercari has decided to treat this matter. Extremely unprofessional. So Mercari, now that you have approved her return, what happens when I get back a half bottle of brand new perfume, with the label torn, not sealed in plastic, or a bottle that she switched (since she claimed mine wasn't real). Guess I'll be keeping this bottle now since I can't relist it. You should really consider going over your policy's/decisions especially with items such as this. Something brand new sealed in plastic that the buyer opens shouldn't be returnable. I am in no way getting back my item that was sent to her. Now I'm out money since she has torn the front label (even if that was my bottle she posted). Plus it's a lot easier to sale items that are still sealed in plastic vs not. I guess in this case that's how this scammer will get away with switching bottles of perfume by opening it... before you allowed their return.

Tip for consumers:
I am in NO way getting back my item that was shipped to her. Now since she has opened what was sent to her that she purchased, at the time. I am out money and can't sale this item once returned due to her causing damage to the bottle. This whole matter is absolutely ridiculous.

I didn't use anything. I sold a bottle of perfume. Mercari approved the buyer's return.
