Initially customer service gave me some trouble due to mistaken identity, however the (frustrating) problem was resolved. I must say that I enjoy the simplicity of Mercari. It is a more streamlined method of buying and selling than Ebay.

This web site is terrible. They have pictures of the item but sends you something totally different. For example. The bags are clearly vintage but you receive a brand new fake bag plastic bag. They have so many sellers websites doing this. They are are usually shipping out of Chino, California. You order one thing and receive another. They don't refund money instead they credit.

Paissed that someone could sell me a molded lot of watches and I could not get a return. The seller had bad feedback with others complaining about it as well.

Tip for consumers:
Customer service is awful no number call and talk to someone. Told that because the item was describe as poor I could not get a refund on a broken mold smelly lot of watches that were not supposed to smell or be in pieces.

This rating game that has taken over American business has gotten out of control. If the money is good that should be enough for Pete's sake. Ebay's rating game is at least more sophisticated for the users and you can separate item description from communication, shipping, etc. Recently, a seller shipped quickly but didn't respond to my message so I flat out don't want to rate them... guess that's what auto-rate is for. Another purchase I rated too soon and regret over-rating the seller because he wasn't gracious at the end.
The sole purpose for writing my review was boost Mercari's rates up because I do have a different experience with Mercari staff aka Team Mercari than most of the reviews. You do have to be patient for a reply, but they will email you back with your concern, and they certainly have been equitable with me. Their system generated emails are a little ugly and cold-looking but their staff seems quite helpful & reasonable always looking to resolve issues. Of course I try to provide detailed information so they are not trying to figure out my issue. Maybe this can help some other buyers interested in doing business with Mercari:}
I'm revising this review after many many more orders. Dealing with "the system" especially at Mercari is proving to be be impossible. Recently I purchased a VHS player that one of the main features did not work. The seller was getting angrier and then his message was deleted by an admin. I asked Mercari to step in an help with the refund as I did not want to deal directly with this nasty seller. I wanted Mercari credit at least for the defective item/seller and am hoping for equity with this purchase. I was thinking of doing a claim on PayPal but have since decided it's not worth the time. I think Team Mercari is as good as whoever you happen to get. I think they hide behind those emails but in fairness most of the time have been professional. I recommend paying with PayPal though they do safeguard your #'s impeccably. Having had my debit card hacked other major websites, I have never had my card hacked on Mercari and the advantage of using card is that you can make offers to sellers with a card but not with PayPal. However, paying with PayPal will give you back-up in case you cannot reach a response with Team Mercari and you do have an issue. They definitely have a lot of cool items, and I think if their customer service becomes more interactive and more professional like their competitors this will be a win-win for everyone who love Mercari. I've been selling via Mercari for just under a year. It's been excellent for Henri Bendel items, okay-ish for sneakers (be prepared for tons of low balls from children) & terrible if you're selling electronics.

I sold an iPhone that I specifically said was for parts via an offer. It's a new-ish model so the parts are about $400 all together. I figured the person could just dismantle it & use whatever they wanted. Well the person didn't read anything because they thought they were getting a perfectly working, unlocked X 256 GB phone at a price far lower than others were selling.

First the person told me it wasn't delivered. Then they said their post didn't deliver on the 23 or 24 of December (WTF? The 2 busiest days of the year? Really?) Next that their postman didn't believe they'd be home & so they marked it as delivered & left at front door but really had it at the post office (trust me, I'm as confused as you!) and so basically, his time for the 3 day release of funds was significantly delayed. I didn't get paid. Then he asks for my passcode, which I gave, but somehow he still thought I was selling it totally unlocked, etc. He filed a claim & somehow won.

When I said WTF to Mercari they said they couldn't tell me exactly why they sided with the buyer. I showed the IMEI, said it was for parts/repair, said it was locked & somehow it's my fault the buyer is an idiot? That's the only dispute I've had on Mercari & I'm burned out with a lot of things but this just added to an already overwhelming stack. I realize that children don't (can't?) read anymore but maybe it's time they learn an expensive lesson? I had multiple people message me & ask questions, all of which I answered honestly & directly. Rather than a commission, perhaps Mercari should be paying their sellers 10% as a PITA fee. The level of idiocy on this platform is awful.

Mercari is a decent app, I had it since the beta stage (which, by the way, was a complete disaster) I think there is a lot they need to fix but for a fairly new app it's so-so for selling.
Just a few things you should know about selling on this app:
1. Keep reposting. There is no way to update your items to bring it back to the top of the list for more buyer potential. If you don't keep reposting, and your item is never purchased within about the first week, it will end up sitting there until the dawn of time.
2. I wish you good luck selling contemporary brands. I've never had much luck selling clothes on Mercari unless it's brands everyone knows (Victoria's Secret, Adidas, etc.) leave the rest for Poshmark.
3. They only take 10% commission! Yay! Priority mail labels are very expensive for some reason. It's $8 for 3 lbs compared to Posh's $6.49 for 5 lbs, not sure why they ever increased the postage as it was once $6 with no issues.
Now for buying on the app:
1. Please stop rating your buyer if you want a return! There is no way for you to get one after rating (which completes the order) Contact Mercari instead!
2. Check the last time the seller you're interested in buying from has posted a new listing. If it's been a couple months, message them first asking if it's still available before buying it. This is because Mercari has an insanely long refund processing time. (and while you're at it, please don't message me asking if it's still available when I posted it yesterday!)
3. If it's listed under "Good" condition, it could have a flaw. It has always bugged me they never made a between for "Like New" and "Good" (maybe something that's been used but has no flaws (Great?)) Read the description.
4. STOP RATING SELLERS "GOOD" WITHOUT A REASON! And contact the seller before you do! We strive for good feedback, and it's very haphazard to get a "good" rating before contacting the seller. Rate 5 stars if you love your order!

Don't get me wrong, I've had a lot of sales gone through swiftly with this app, no customer service issues, but it's not the greatest for selling. It still has countless bugs and overpriced items, but I still believe with enough customer feedback it has potential to be better. Transferring your money to the bank takes a few days but they're getting better at this (used to be over a week sometimes...)

The ap takes some getting used to and they recently implemented an authentication system for high end items which I appreciate. The place is littered with counterfeits mainly Goyards, Gucci, LV, Dior, and Chanel from what I've seen.

I prevailed with my own authentication certificates and kept all my receipts but at the end of the day it didn't matter. They will approve all returns but they won't make sure the return is valid. Have a center where all the returns are sent before being returned to their rightful owners.

Mercari needs to do more to protect their sellers and buyers when it comes to approving returns. They won't disclose why a return was approved in details so that the seller can do better or a seller can state their case. It is very one sided. They always side with the buyer no matter how ludicrous the claim. Doesn't matter what the pictures are in the listing or what description is in the original listing. Won't matter if the seller points out every thing was disclosed from the beginning. If a buyer wants to return Mercari will just agree.

I've had 3 empty returns or bait and switches on 4 approved returns. Only 1 item out of 4 approved returns made it back to me. I've sold 55 items and 51 five star ratings with raving reviews should be more than enough to prove to Mercari what my integrity is as an honest seller. I've made purchases as well and two of the bags were not the same as the pictures and I was sent fakes in place of what was posted. The other low cost items under $20 that I purchased were scam free. Too many scammers to make it worth staying especially if you have high priced items. You just won't know what will happen and you will get scared to even send out the product in fear of getting scammed again.

I would pay extra to have a return reviewed by Mercari and they will know how it feels to get an empty box or different item completely.

They should stand by their own policies on a lot of things from sales to buying as they often will use a members lack of knowledge in messages against them.

They need properly trained staff. The low fee of 10% is not worth half the headache when it comes to their lack of help. When you try to contact them through their site; it takes a minimum of 3-4 days for them to get back to your original inquiry and they will often escalate this issue to another department which takes another two days. That's 5-6 days before an issue is worked on. When you contact them through their phone number it takes them even longer after you leave a detailed voice message. How are we to conduct business when sellers and buyers can't get help for over 72 hours?

I don't recommend selling anything of value here. Nor do I suggest buying high end items from either their top producers. Sadly, those Lux sellers have been around the longest and they are the ones who know how to scam a buyer the most. They know Mercari's terms and will use it to scam.

I was kicked off of Mercari because I did not know if two Items were authentic. I clearly stated that they were not authentic just a regular pair shoes no name Brand and just a regular pocketbook people are constantly selling stuff on there like it. I was treated like a common criminal my sales show that I was a good seller my Item were always low I pretty much was giving it away people were nitpicking me to death I had people scamming me constantly and trying to keep my money and I even had Items stolen from me. Also I lost a lot of stuff in postage shipping and all the time I was patient I tried to contact service I tried to go through all the procedures it seem like I was constantly contacting customer service just to get my money. Yes I am upset I am a disabled woman doing this to try to pay medical cost and medicine selling my stuff cheap. I am honest and I highly respect myself for that and my sales showed that I was honest I made a couple mistakes and I was terminated. Mistakes I didn't even know I was doing. I was very naïve when I first started this and I have tried to learn from it I was totally shocked when I received a text saying I had been terminated definitely why don't They definitely terminate some of the scammers for instance people receive your item in excellent condition but know the rules file a complaint that there was something wrong they get to keep your Item and receive credits to spend you don't get your Item back.as a seller you do not get the protection they do they get rewarded for lying and stealing your stuff even after you take four pictures to prove that its quality And anything else that they need to know. Which a lot of good it does you the majority of them do not even read your profile your background your information or even look at your pictures they just know they won't It. Even if it means wasting your time asking you questions written under the descriptions. I don't recommended the app because like me who invested a lot of time and effort hang still got kicked off back only being honest and yes a little naïve so shame on you shame on you for treating people who are honest like you treated me.

To summarize: stay away. I have been using mercari since 2017. I joined when there weren't many safe options to sell your stuff. Mercari offered that. The customer service has went downhill. I'm both a buyer and seller. If you are Selling anything with value just don't bother. The buyers left are scavengers and lowballers because no one wants to spend and throw their money away by being scammed. Congrats mercari you drove the good buyers away. If you are buying be careful. I ordered a ring that looked like it came out of bubble gum machine. It was marked PANDORA and the size was a 9 not a 6. The seller blatantly misadvertised their product and all they said was sorry you are out of luck unless you can prove it is incorrect size and is fake. I wouldve had to drive and get it sized at a jeweler just to get a refund. Oh, but it gets better. After being verbally harrassed by the seller and jumping through hoops. I confirmed the sell because I wanted to review the seller and warn other buyers. I was respectful and did nothing verbally abusive compared to her review for me. Here's the kicker. Mercari removed my review from her page so She can do this to somebody else! There were other complaints to this buyer as well around the same time frame. They deleted my review for the seller! I blocked her because i felt uncomfortable knowing she had my address and like I said verbally abused me in the chat. I am still in shock. Mercari used to be safe and secure but not anymore. I will be closing my account with them. I suggest you look elsewhere. I did not want a free item or even a refund. I just wanted to send the ring back and be done with it. Unprofessional and unsettling. Disappointed because of the potential... its worse than dealing with ebay.

Horrible experience with Mercari. I got scammed as a new buyer, found a cell phone (Samsung Galaxy 10) and bought it from a seller.

When the package arrived it was a refurbished iPhonexs. So the seller sent me the wrong item. I contacted the seller who denied he sent it and swore he sent the Samsung.

I tried to request refund in the Mercari app, but it said the return was ineligible! I felt scammed. I was eventually able to find and a support email address online, and emailed their support.

They agreed to refund me (after 'escalating') and asked me to send it back to the seller and emailed me the return label. I promptly sent the wrong item back. I also sent photo proof of the wrong item sent.

I got confirmation the item was received back from the seller and I would be getting a refund.

Then today I got this email from them:

We have reviewed your return for item m*******890. However, we have reason to believe that you have intentionally given us false information in order to have a return or refund approved. We strictly prohibit this activity, as we strive to ensure that Mercari is a safe and friendly environment for all users.

We have completed the transaction and released payment to your seller, since they have fulfilled their obligation of sending the order.

Your account has been suspended pending deletion. Please complete your in-progress transactions and request a Direct Deposit in order to receive your funds.

Once your transactions have been completed, and you have received your Direct Deposit, your account will be deleted.

I AM DISGUSTED By this website and have told everyone on my social media how Mercari has stolen my money and my YSL Shoes! When I told them I will broadcast how they stole innocent sellers and buyers money - out of no where they delete and suspend my account! I have emailed they a million times to ship back my YSL shoes that Mercari has allowed the buyer to keep and never released my Funds for selling them even after 6 days! I emailed them over and over and then they said we won't ship your item because these shoes are fake according to the buyer. I sent them a Reciept of proof that my shoes are REAL and they shut their mouths and then came up with another excuse that i have falsely been associated with precious users who have their account suspended. First of all I have never incmy life previously register with you guys. Do you think I am this stupid to register an account previously with you guys especially with how you guys steal people's money? They refuse to give me my money for my shoes or Send back my shoes. I have contacted an attorney and they will be sending a letter to their P. O box and I have also contacted the Better Business Bureau and I have also contacted the CEO of Mercari through Facebook and have screen shot every proof of their emails and lies. I am also creating a petition with signature of all thee people they have stole from. There's over 1,000 people that are stating that they take money and shut accounts so there isn't any evidence!

Send back my damn YSL shoes now or reinstate my account and release my funds otherwise I will not give up and fight till I win my case my court with you guys! You guys are messing with a Law student who is FIRE!

I sold some perfume on Mercari recently. The buyer requested a refund because it arrived broken. I had packaged my items very carefully, taping the caps shut with electrical tape to prevent leakage, wrapping the perfume in bubble wrap, and placing the item in a bubble mailer. I've never had a problem with this message before. About 3 minutes after I was notified of the buyer opening a case, I was notified that the case had been "resolved" and I'd been denied any payment due to "insufficient packaging." I was given no opportunity to respond to the inquiry or defend myself before the case was arbitrarily closed. Needless to say, I was stunned, because I know how delicate perfume bottles are, so I'm always very careful. I immediately sent a message to Mercari support. They kept repeating the lines "insufficient packaging," and "our decision must stand," but refused for a long time to specify exactly how my packaging was insufficient. At one point, the customer service rep literally just copied and pasted Mercari's packaging guidelines, but still didn't tell me which one of those I had supposedly violated. I asked to be transferred to a supervisor and was initially denied, with the customer service rep saying "my supervisor would say the same thing." Eventually after asking three times, I was transferred to a supervisor, who finally told me what they thought I did wrong: not enough space between each item in the package. I was selling a bundle of very small perfume samples. The guidelines stated 1-2 inches of bubble wrap around each item and 1-2 inches between each item in the package. I asked if this meant each tiny 1.5ml sample had to be individually wrapped in 1-2 inches of bubble wrap and placed 1-2 inches apart from all the other little samples I was selling. I got evasive response after evasive response. I eventually asked to see the pictures the buyer had submitted, and the pictures of the items 1) were of the items after the buyer removed them from the package, meaning Mercari had no way of proving how I placed them inside the package and 2) clearly showed the front of the mailer (pictured empty, after the buyer had removed all the items) being totally crushed and dirty, as though some mail workers had decided to stomp on it or throw it to the ground.

I see scammers trying to sell fake perfume on Mercari all the time - their counterfeit bottles are pretty convincing. I also see sellers price-gouging and blatantly refusing to take any responsibility for themselves. Yet Mercari chooses to focus on me, an honest seller with a hundred 5-star ratings who was a victim of a mail carrier mistake.

I've attached just one example of the evasive and unhelpful emails I received from Mercari.

I have made 30 to 35 purchases on Mercari. I have found this site to be unprofessional, and their technology is rudimentary and flawed. For example, every time I make a purchase, I receive messages that I changed my address in the system even though I did not. Another example: even though paying with PayPal is an option when you submit an offer on an item, and I am able to complete the transaction, an error message appears afterward in the messages sectionr indicating "this card cannot be used." Mercari Support's response to my complaint is that PayPal cannot be used for submitting offers. Yet they have left it in the workflow for some time. I guess they're simply too unprofessional to clean up their systems even when they are aware of the defects. I refuse to store a credit card in their system since they have implemented technology so poorly; I have no confidence that they are keeping credit card information secure. Navigating their site and application is painful as well. The app doesn't even have a place to look up your purchases. You have to go to the main site for that. The searches work sometimes but if you enter more than one criteria, it frequently only returns data on one criteria. When you click to view an item and then try to return to where you were in the search you had implemented, it frequently punts you back to the very beginning and it's very, very painful to find where you formerly were. Response time is frequently slow. In addition to the pain of using their system, the way they allow vendors to do business doesn't make a lot of sense in general. For example, the seller is not required to put in the listing the color of the item they're selling. I can't possibly count all the times I've had to ask a seller the color of an item. Why would they not make that a required field for clothing? They also have a great many sellers that I consider to be deadbeats – that is, very unprofessional, TERRIBLE pictures, no measurements, little to no description about their listed items, and it is very common to find that the brand or size listed is contradictory to what I see in the pictures. In addition to bad and/or lacking information, The majority of sellers don't answer questions, and I've had several cancel my order with no explanation, cancel my order based on their own mistakes, and several others just never bothered to ship my item and I had to file for a refund. It's a very unprofessional site. They clearly do not set expectations with their sellers or hold them accountable for any kind of performance standards. I have complained and complained, and management does not improve anything. Ever.

Recently purchased yellowstone season 5 part 1 complete. Rapid response, received in 2 days. BUT NOT COMPLETE part one season five. MISSING episode 8

refund policy of 3 days is unworkable for some purchases. received dvd box labelled complete part one, which is 8 episodes. began watching 1 or 2 each evening. Got to dvd #3, only has episodes 6 and 7

I have never had a more horrible experience in my life. Long story short, I was over my mother's house and my sister was looking for a perfume and I found it on Mercari for her. She looked at my telephone and decided to buy it under my account. Fast forward one month or so, she completely forgot that she purchased the perfume and disputed it on her credit card. The same day, she told me what happened, I subsequently reminded her that she made the purchase. She immediately contacted the bank and corrected her error on the 26th of the month and the bank fixed her mistake and paid the transaction along with notes stating the payment rectifies the error. Fast forward to the 29th, I receive a message from Mercari stating my account will be closed due to protential fraud on my account and to contact my banking institution leaving no number at Mercari to contact. Knowing the situation, I immediately contacted Mercari via Facebook messenger to explain the error and that is has been corrected and it was a mistake on my sister's part. I also told them it was 100% my error for allowing my sister to order under my account but Mercari would be completely paid and the banking institution had fixed the problem. Meraci responded that they have made a decision to shut my account down regardless if the problem was rectified. Mercari did not even care if the banking institution sent them a letter about the error. I was buying merchandise here or there from Meraci but I will now just use Ebay or Postmark! Horrible, horrible company! This company will not last especially from all the problems I have read. Do not use, be warned in advance!

I found a really nice looking Smart Watch for my Android Phone and it was only $25 with Free Shipping. I purchased in on March 29th and I received it in the mail on Monday April 3. I was very impressed with the Fast Delivery and I am very pleased with this beautiful Black Smart Watch with Gold Trim. After charging it with the included charging cable (a standard Android charging cable - plugged into one of my PC's USB slots) - I had it set up in minutes and made my first phone call. The tiny Speaker is loud and clear, and the Mic clearly picked up my voice - I felt like $#*! Tracy - So Cool! The seller for this item is Zea De Jesus - and I give him my highest recommendation. He promptly answered my pre-purchase questions and so I took a shot for 25 bucks - and now I'm so glad I did. There's a lot of very cool functions including a calendar, a walking timer (pedometer), a timer with alarm that offers multiple pre-sets, a sleep timer-monitor that can also be used as a stopwatch, a programmable reminder (good for timing parking meters), an anti-lost feature, a cool Facebook Interface function that let me listen to an interview with me that was posted on FB, a camera that functions like a pocket mirror (you'll need to add a memory card to take and save pictures). It also requires a SIM Card to activate several other functions including access to Google Chrome, Facebook and Twitter - but even without the memory and sim cards (you have to pry the back off to insert them) - I got a really nice stylish Smart Watch with a lot of cool functions including a really cool watch display (with 3 choices available) - for a fraction of what others are paying for these cool new gadgets!

I ordered half bust coins received counterfeit ones, DO NOT TRUST this site for authenticity. They are selling fake stuff.

I sold a brand new LEGO set that was retailing for $600 on Amazon and target we got it as gift on Christmas, the set was never opened and I posted the maximum allowed amount of pictures to show all the sealed corners. I sold it for $300 to a buyer with zero reviews. Had a bad filling should have canceled the order. But anyways I shipped it and after the item was delivered I got a msg from the buyer calling me names and said he wants his money back, he said the original Lego was replaced with regular Lego. I called him a liver because I sold him a brand new never opened set and he admitted in mags on mercari that he replaced the Lego him self and he doesn't care, and costumer service didn't care to read through msgs between us where he admitted to replace the original stuff, the kept telling me same stuff they will have him send the item to them so they can review the issue I kept telling them that he told me he will send them his own stuff that he put in the box and they didn't care to read msgs. And at the end they asked me if I want the item to be send to me. Are you kidding me, I know I will not receive my item he told me so, so why I would want it send to me. So yah he got the set for free. Using his name and address I found him on Facebook and he posted many pictures of this set with his daughter that he got for her birthday by scamming me. Yah don't sell to new sellers, I specially if your item is super expensive. Mercary doesn't care about you. All they care is about their square share. I sold on EBay for 8 years and had all 100% reviews never had any problems with people because I'm trustworthy seller and my reputation is very important. I switch to Mercari because EBay changed a lot of things that didn't work for me anymore. Mercari doesn't let you see how the seller rated you until you rate them. I'd like to see how I was rated before I rate them back, but no they wouldn't allow. This selling app is not as good as they like to appear. They charge to many different fees, and always fake buyers site

Tip for consumers:
Do not sell expensive items to brand new buyers , those are most likely scammers that will keep your item and will get their refund. Costumer service doesn’t give a f... about the seller. They will charge you all they can to get their share of your $$!

Mercari does not have ANY safety net or help for sellers who receive unjust ratings. Even when it can be proven in your transactions and history.

A user bought a mens wedding ring from me and then claimed she ordered a women's bridal set item from me as well even though she didn't. When leaving feedback for the men's ring, she actually gave me a poor rating claiming the non-existent ladies bridal set never arrived.
The item I sold her arrived and was perfect but she left me bad feedback for something else that I didn't sell her. She is confusing me with another seller. I checked all of my sold items and she never bought a wedding set from me as she claims, I never sold anything for $60 which she claims, and I never blocked her which she also claims in her rating. She has obviously mistaken me for another user and left me poor feedback for their mistake. I attempted to message this user, but it says I cannot contact them because the transaction is over.

This is very poor management and a very unfair system when mistakes are made. There has to some type of protection in place for unjust ratings or mistakes that can be proven. I asked Mercari to have this feedback removed or changed and to le the user to know she has made a mistake because she did not rate me based on the item she bought from me, but on her interactions with another seller - MISTAKEN FOR ME.

Mercari refused to clear this up. One of their team members, Angel, never investigated this but simply copied and pasted their statement about ratings from the website giving me a "gentle reminder" that it can't be changed. I find this very unfair, especially since I can prove in my selling history that I never sold her the item she complains about in her feedback. Mercari needs to step up and provide some protection for sellers or sellers are going to leave. I am going back to Ebay because although their are fees and many rules, at least they protect sellers when they are wronged.

Don't sell on Mercari. Also... don't buy on Mercari. I have seen so many fake products, particularly jewelry, that sellers are passing off as genuine and scamming the buyers. The buyer only has 3 days to complete the transaction and rate it, so they don't even have time to realize their product is a fake. SKIP MERCARI... GO ELSEWHERE as a buyer and a seller!
