Initially customer service gave me some trouble due to mistaken identity, however the (frustrating) problem was resolved. I must say that I enjoy the simplicity of Mercari. It is a more streamlined method of buying and selling than Ebay.
This web site is terrible. They have pictures of the item but sends you something totally different. For example. The bags are clearly vintage but you receive a brand new fake bag plastic bag. They have so many sellers websites doing this. They are are usually shipping out of Chino, California. You order one thing and receive another. They don't refund money instead they credit.
I have have had terrible experience selling on Mercari because their customer service regularly approves returns for no valid reason. This has happened to me on three separate occasions over the past several months despite being a highly rated seller for many years.
First, a buyer claimed a new Tory Burch leather bag they purchased from me was damaged. I was never shown any photos that supported this claim, and upon receiving the returned bag no damage could be found. However, the buyer removed manufacturer's protective packaging material that was intact when I sold and shipped the bag to them. I sent photos to Mercari showing every angle of the bag and no scratches and indicated the condition was not the same as I sold since packaging had been removed. I got no response or support from Mercari.
Second, I sold a pair of new Tory Burch sneakers with description direct from the retailer website where they were purchased. The buyer requested return because the shoes did not fit them, which is not a valid reason per Mercari's return policy. Regardless, Mercari approved the return.
Finally, I sold a new MCM bag that was originally purchased at Nordstrom Rack. The buyer initiated a return claiming it was not authentic and said that an MCM store confirmed it was fake. However, buyer would not tell me where the authentication was performed, considering there are no MCM boutiques in his state. To prove authenticity of the item I provided copy of receipt and side-by-side photo comparison of identical authentic bag purchased at Nordstrom recently showing no difference in stitching, material, logos, hardware, etc. I researched the buyer and discovered they are a felon convicted of racketeering charges recently released from Federal Prison (Merc account opened same timeframe as their early prison release). Considering the buyer is on parole, they could not have left their state to go to the nearest MCM boutique. Despite all the info I provided, Mercari sided with buyer who I suspect is using the platform for purpose of fraud and then warned ME via the return approval message that counterfeit items are not allowed even though the item I sold was clearly authentic! I am waiting to receive the returned item and will file police report if the buyer swapped a fake for the authentic item I shipped to them, because I do not expect help from Mercari.
The unwillingness of Mercari customer service to follow their own policies for returns makes it an ideal platform for dishonest buyers to commit fraud and leaves sellers vulnerable to being scammed. I no longer feel safe selling on Mercari compared to other platforms who stand behind trusted sellers. Mercari wouldn't even provide and response or explanation when I have inquired or raised concerns.

They keep advertising $2 coupon (which is not even wothed) for those who invite family and friend but when you invite your sister that staying in the same house. They said it's the same user?
My logic is. Does my sister has to ask me to buy something from mercari while she can buy it from her own gadget?

If the reason is to create safe and friendly invirontment, each problem could be reviewed and solved with evidence if needed before suspending users and ignore their complains and reports.
Secondly, my suspention was because my default payment having problem so I try to use another card and it indicate as suspicious transaction amd cancelled the purchase. Didn't they see that when billing and shipping address is the same is not suspicious. It should be the owner of the card.
And...
I asked a friend of mine to purchase and deliver it to my address, they said that my friend's account is new and mine. Lol. In fact her account was almost a year old and we lived in the diffrent state. Ok it was my fault and I didnt mind got revoked and I apologized to mercari to fix my friend account but her account was deleted without any review before mind.
The last is. It is forbiden to use forwarding servise address because it will ne delayed rating for those seller so their payment would be delayed too. So I was ready to give evidence that it is my own address and i live in it. But again I was ignored. Lol

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AS A SELLER OR BUYER ON THIS APP. YOU WILL BE SCAMMED! I have been patient with Mercari. I am a seller and buyer with over 600 ALL positive reviews. There has always been an abundance of counterfeit items on this app, but I just learned not to buy items that could be counterfeit. I gave Mercari a chance despite this, but there has been a surge of low class scammers trying all types of methods to get one over you. Recently, I had a buyer claim I sent the incorrect iPad cover. I know I sent the correct one, but I was nice and said please open a claim or send it back so we can see it was incorrect and refund you. However, the buyer went ahead and rated me poorly. I have noticed a lot of buyers doing this, claiming item not received or wrong item sent, to see if you will refund them PayPal or send them a new item free of charge. If you dont, they review you poorly. When I contacted Mercari they REFUSED to change the rating... even though there is no proof I sent the wrong item. This is unacceptable as it ruins my reputation, and there is NO PROOF this happened. Other apps such as postmark and eBay require the buyer to PROVE the wrong item was sent, or the negative review gets deleted. Mercari provides no such protection for its sellers, even though we pay them a fee to protect us. I have written a review to the BBB, and will let others know what they will deal with if they chose Mercari. Its literally full of scammers, bottom feeders, and people trying to get items almost free. Its ridiculous, and I will no longer bother using their app. Poshmark and Ebay are far superior and professional. Mercari is a mess of a company.
I bought several items with no problem. Then came the ring that was described and sold as 925 sterling silver. After much back and forth with the seller who had definitely lied (it was not stamped and, more importantly, copper was showing thru after one day of wearing it), I followed rigorous company return procedure: minimum of 6 photos of item from every angle, photo of original packaging and photo of original shipping label. (I was relieved I had kept it all since trash day was the day before.) I was emailed a return shipping label and the message said I had one week to get the item sent. Good because my printer being out of ink I needed to hustle to find a place to print it. No easy feat, esp during covid. I managed to get it in the mail just in time and as shipping is especially slow this winter due to higher postal demands (Covid), waited patiently for my refund. Now, looking for help I find it stated that items have to be scanned by the return shipper within 3 days from receiving the return label email. What happened to the promised 1 week? It gets worse because I now find out (thru additional hunting; customer service no where to be found) that not only did I not receive my refund
But Im screwed because my purchase was suddenly marked "completed" by Mercari only 3 days after my email where my return was authorized and return label given. "Completed", meaning I can no longer contact the seller who has the ring back but never refunded me nor can I leave any review for the seller. Note: My review could not be left earlier either as it would have nullified any choice to return. (They do warn you of this. So obviously no one wants to do That!) This is how the company is very underhanded. So there are likely many sellers who have false good ratings due to this catch of not being able to review anything with a problem. So not only are the ratings you use to choose a "good"seller skewed, but if you do have an issue your purchase likely will time out before youre able to even leave a negative review warning others.
I hope Im explaining this well. I mean to say if you have a bad item you wont be able to do anything about it, so you need to be a highly lucky person. This off-site review is all I can do to warn anyone. (I'll now look for any additional non-biased sites I can leave reviews on because I sure wish I had seen some ahead of time.)

I bought a lot of merchandise from a mercari seller, she was interested to sell some of them due that her acct was suspended for a month.
At the begining bought a small lot ($400) and begin selling on mercari, sales were good.
After aprox 2 weeks decided to buy more new merchandise ($600), everything smooth at this point.
My supplier that had her acct suspended, got her acct back and began posting, that when problems started.
The next day both received the account deleted mssge due to multiple accts. Contacted mercari for answers, havent got one yet.
Im thinking becuase we were selling the same stuff (very specific items models) they though we were the same person.
My supplier cant contact them due to no phone # available and she had no access to her account (no open transaction),
Mine will be deleted when I finish all my transactions. I HOPE FOR THE BEST.
HOWEVER I HAD INVESTED LOT OF TIME AND $$$ THAT NEED TO BE ABLE TO GET RID OF THE INVENTORY

I wish I could give them a negative -5. I'm never doing business with these guys again. I have real estate houses I rent and flip. I also have a cosmetics business. We sell and buy constantly on eBay, jet, Amazon and more. Me and my husband spend $6,000-$10,000 a month online alone. I Thanked them for suspending me for 24hrs and sending me scolding letter and punishing me like a child. Over something so stupid to. All because stock photos. 1 mistake that I overlooked. EBay Amazon and other sites allow stock pictures. I didn't know they didn't allow. I'm so glad they offened before I put my $60,000 worth inventory on your site. I have contacted people I've bought from on that site and asked them to cancel if they haven't shipped. I'm glad I was on vacation this week and did not spend more money from that site.
With all this and I had a seller from this site arguing with me when she sent me a purse with rust on it. We went through PayPal and formed a complaint. It was obvious they have a superior attitude. I have only returned 2 things all this year on Amazon and eBay and the sellers was nice. I copied and pasted their letter below concerning the terrible thing I did... By putting stock photos on their wall.

BUYER BEWARE! ---Mercari is a TERRIBLE website for Buyers! I bought a Ralph Lauren lamp from buyer --- designertoyou --- based on the pictures she posted, but when I received the lamp it's a DULL green-aqua colour when in the pictures it was a Beautiful, Bright turquoise colour! I immediately messaged the seller telling her I was NOT Happy with the item and that I wanted to RETURN it. She NEVER RESPONDED AND BLOCKED ME! I contacted Mercari after the seller blocked me and they told me that the 3-day period for me to request to return it had passed -- AND THEY LEFT A 5-STAR REVIEW for the seller ON MY BEHALF WITHOUT MY CONSENT! I told Mercari support that I had contacted the seller within the 3 days but she never responded and instead blocked me. Mercari's response was that their procedure is that I was supposed to contact Them instead of the seller. Ok -- My bad there for not reading those rules --which are different from literally EVERY other buy. Sell website I've EVER used before - including Ebay, Craigslist, etc. This was only my 3rd purchase with Mercari and when the first item I'd bought from a different seller came with a damaged lampshade I did contact that seller who offered me a discount on a future purchase -- she didn't Block me. Sorry, but A BAD SELLER IS A BAD SELLER. And Mercari should have done something about -designertoyou- because of their Completely Inappropriate Response to me. At the very Least, Mercari should have Removed their 5-Star rating and allowed ME to RATE this HORRIBLE SELLER. When I requested to speak with a Customer service Manager, Mercari Refused and closed my complaint! Purchased 12 glasses, 2 arrived broken. Seller refused partial refund. Mercaris prompts were awful!
1st- Perfumes are combustible and not allowed to be shipped first class, no matter if the option is there shipping USPS with the Mercari label is ILLEGAL and will subject you to fines because it can catch fire on a plane. The special rates through USPS exclusive to Mercari are for first class packages ONLY. This probably means your cheapest legal amd protected option is UPS Ground.
2nd- people will try to convince you to cheat the system but telling Mercari that your package is under 1lb even if it isnt, so they can get 4.99 shipping via USPS, or they genuinely won't know the rules. You must include the weight of the packaging materials in that figure. The post office rates everything by the nearest pound so if your package is 1lb 1oz, you're going to be rated for the (up to 2lbs) option. This means that the item either will get sent back to you or will have postage due for the buyer and the post office with hold the item until its paid. That comes out of your profit.
3rd- some people use methods outside of mercari to ship, like paypal. This is directly off of thier FAQs: " Mercari isn't responsible for lost or damaged packages when you ship on your own. For items weighing more than 20 lbs, sellers will need to pay for return shipping. Note: Mercari cannot reimburse shipping labels when you choose to ship on your own. Pack and Ship is a packaging service offered through The UPS Store."
This means that if the buyer decides to say the item didnt arrive or it arrived damaged, you are out your product AND payment. Buyer keeps both.

Let's start with shipping protection - It is almost impossible to get reimbursed for items damaged in shipping. Mercari almost always states that you didn't pack it well enough. Apparently three inches of bubble wrap and a double walled corrugated box is not enough shipping protection even though it meets Mercari guidelines as well as shipping service guidelines. So I get a damaged item returned back and Mercari files a claim with the shipper anyway and pockets the money.
I had several of these cases and filed for arbitration per Mercari's arbitration clause. Paid all of my money for arbitration but Mercari didn't even though they were properly served.
Most recently, they approved a return for an item but returned it postal instead of UPS which was the method I used to ship. Because of dimensional weighting, the returned item arrived with almost $50.00 postage due. I informed Mercari and sent the slip from the post office. They said I have to pay it to get the item and then they will give me a Mercari Credit to be used within 30 days. So I left it at the Post Office since it is their fault. That was February 13th when it was attempted to be delivered. I've gone back and forth with Mercari about this as it sat there. As of today, March 4th, 2021, there has been zero movement on the item and zero scans. It is not eligible to be redelivered. Yet they canceled the transaction and refunded the buyer. I have no product and the buyer has a refund.
There is no way to contact Mercari by phone and it generally takes days or weeks to get a response on issues. IF they even respond. You have no idea how many times I've sent emails especially about items returned not in the same condition that they have totally ignored.
We have way more issues with the company than we do with buyers on the site, although there are those as well.
Seller has no protection on Mercari. Use EBay. Horrible customer service, horrible buyers, horrible site.
