The site was great I got lots of responses and had several good people interested and rented both rooms inside of one month!
! It took a moment and about $60.00 to realize this is a scam-list. Never received a response from any so-called "roommates" Simply put< it's a scam!

Don't do it. You sign up, they send you fake messages you can't check until you start paying so it looks free but it's not.

Roommates.com is a bulletin board service. You can post your profile and photos for free and send messages to other members for free. You can even put your contact information in your outgoing messages if you would like. You do have to purchase a membership in order to read incoming messages from other members but if you put your contact information in your messages then only one of you would need to upgrade in order to communicate outside of the website.

I paid the fee, the rent is reasonable, not only have I not got a SINGLE response, I have sent over twenty messages to people looking in my area, to no avail... not a single reply... UNBELIEVABLE!

All members can send out messages to other members for free, and include their contact information if they would like, so there isn't anything keeping members from reaching out and sending you a message. The membership fees are paid to read their incoming messages and see the comments section of member profiles.

Nobody can use this site unless you pay, and nobody would since there are free options out there. Useless site!
I used roommates.com to find a roommate and found one in just a week. I would recommend anyone needing to find a roommate to try the site, it works!
I have actually had better luck with craigslist and that place is full of scammers but at least, they occasionally have a response that is a real person who is actually looking for a room in my city and at least CL is free. I had one person from roommate.com contact me saying that they were interested in the room but they asked for more "verification" (Roommates.com has different levels of verification) I had to pay $2.99 to roommates.com to TRY to verify my ID and roommates.com rejected my verification and then asked for my social security number as an alternate way to "verify" my identity?! WTF! Worst case, they (or some hackers?) are trying to steal my identity. Best case (?), the roommates.com website sucks and it now looks like I failed verification? Either way, I have had several "matches" say that they refuse to pay the cost to read my post and so, it is is total waste of time to try to communicate. Now, I feel that my security/privacy/identity could be vulnerable to theft. This is an awful "service"... what a waste of almost $30 for two months and what a stressful thing to worry about now that I put my personal information at risk by trying to "verify" with roommates.com. Grrrrrr. I felt like they were legitimate but now, I think I made a huge mistake. It sure seems like a SCAM to me. (UPDATE: They did refund my money after I reported the problem to my bank and asked them for a refund. They insisted that they are not a scam and paid the refund, in full.) Still, what's up with charging people to "verify" their ID? And please stop saying that the service is free if communication can't be accessed without paying. It is more honest to say UPFRONT that you can post a profile for free and pay to access matches, if you decide to use the service.
