I usually use turbo tax or the H&R Block software. Tried this to free e-file for my state. According to what I just filled out I would get less than half of the federal and about $60 less in state refund than what turbo tax calculated. I think it has to do with the EIC that for the life of me I can't get this software to allow. It also wouldn't allow me to enter interest I've paid to my mortgage company.
I've used many efile software over the years from paid to to free stuff. This is the least user friendly and intuitive software I've run across. There are better options out there for you! Look around.
Finished my federal form, but just as I'm starting state form it said "Oops, there was an error...", and since the "Try Again" button did nothing my only other option was the "Exit State Return" button which then then caused it to immediately say "Congratulations, your state form is done!". So then I hit "Continue" and it tells me it can't file the state form because of verification errors. And guess what? There's no actual way to access this mythical state form that magically has been both completed and not completed. At this point I was in an endless loop, unable to do anything expect repeat the above steps. That's when I bailed. See screenshots.
I'm a small business owner, and chose to go with Taxslayer for my 2023 taxes. While their website and interface were user friendly and easy to use, I felt rushed through and I had additional information to enter and was not provided opportunity to do so.
I received a letter from the IRS a few days ago indicating that there were glaring errors in my return, to include several pages missing. Some to include the first two pages of my return, proof of income, and then proof of quarterly taxes filed. Whether this was a glitch or not, something like this should not be overlooked. My wife and I double checked everything before we even hit submit! Everything was there. The review page even said as much.
When I've done everything within my power and capability to file my taxes, in accordance to the material provided by the website, and the IRS kicks it back for information missing; then that leaves a lot to be desired to the efficacy of Taxslayer. They have lost my business from this day forward.
Their pricing is deceptive -- and that's being kind. More of a scam. Says you can do a return for free -- yet they start tacking on charges when you get into it. Then their website got jammed up. Couldn't process my return for days. Then I finally file my return. Turns out their dopey software got it wrong. So instead of a nice refund -- I had to pay. What's really funny is whenever you call customer service to ask about a bill -- the first word out of the agent's mouth, without addressing your question, is "you're contractually obligated to pay." That kind of training shouts "scam" in my book. Do not do business with these slimy crooks.
Hopefully someone can learn from my mistake. I put all my information into this damn site and it says, "calculating return", it scrolls aimlessly and then states I need to, "log back in?" (So where exactly is my information going to?) From a computer programming standpoint - it's absolutely terrible. The site is not communicating well and yes I have cleared my browser history and downgraded my security wall etc... I wrote my concerns to customer service via email and the response I received was, "It should work now"... Seriously... well IT DOESN'T. Please, do yourself a favor and find a different way to file your taxes. This site is so bad I am questioning if its even legit. I used it last year and things were great. But, never, ever again. Scary stuff folks.
What a mess. The free option is not clearly stated until the end. They want to charge 89.90 for various services. I sighed and agreed as the person I'm doing taxes for ok'd it. They never asked for payment either. And it is slow and clunky this year as someone else mentioned. I've used Credit Karma in the past but they changed companies and I could never get the new site to work. Why on earth do all these tax sites lie to you? Ridiculous fees, etc. I feel like writing to Bernie Sanders about this. It's all a joke. Thanks Congress.
Logged in to do my 2021 taxes. You can imagine my surprise when I went to file them, and the quoted almost $70 for filing fees! I was doing the "classic" 1040 only with no extra forms and standard deduction. Without a doubt, the most expensive online tax prep company on the internet. I can't believe anyone would pay for this! I instead used Tax Hawk, and it only cost me $14.99 total for filing both federal and state. It's time for overpriced Taxslayer to go the way of Myspace and the Dodo bird.
All tax slayer wants is to collect a fee from you. They allow you to file your state and federal forms, tell you that you everything checked out and all you have to do is wait for federal/state confirmation. Both in 2019, 2020 I got confirmation that everything was done correctly and fed/ state accepted my return. Taxslayer wasted no time debiting my bank account for their fee. Shortly after filing ( both years) I got notified by IRS that instead of being issued a refund I would have to pay them between $1100-$1300. This company sucks. I will never use Taxslayer again
Anything on your return regarding income or age will "autoupgrade" your return for their 3rd rate software at $70 telling you AFTER you have entered a mountain of information. You never see your return and you have to reprepare the return. Rip off.
The site tells me I need to finish my return which I know damn well was submitted and when I go to 'finish' it, it says I can't because my ss number had already efiled. Seriously... screen shots below. Oh and it says refund of 0 and it is over 2000. Worthless piece of crap software. If you want to sit around and wonder wtf if going on with your return since they give two different messages, then this is the program for you. I will never use this crap again.
