Why must buyer provide credit card number before she/he knows whether her offer is accepted? This doesn't feel 'safe.'

I'm asking myself the same question, but not only do you provide your credit card information in advance, but they actually CHARGE your card for the offer amount BEFORE the seller even sees OR accepts the offer! If they don't accept it, then you have to wait 3-5 business days to receive a refund! Are you kidding me? They are making interest off of the week that YOUR money is in THEIR account! How can this be legal for you to pay for something that may not even be available for the price you have offered? And I'm being charged $19 to ship a small boudoir pillow PLUS a $5 SERVICE FEE which goes to Chairish for "administrative & credit card fees"? I am totally disgusted

It's common for reseller and auction sites to require payment information before you can submit an offer. That's just common sense because otherwise people could constantly submit lowball bids to test the waters (and perhaps compare prices against stuff they are selling). But it is definitely not common for your card to be charged before a bid is accepted! I think that may be a violation of your consumer rights (you might want to check your credit card agreement regarding whether you are protected against this practice). A business can run your card s a pending charge, to see whether your card is valid (hotels do this all the time), but that will not show on your bill as a finalized charge. If they truly run a full transaction before the bid is accepted and the merchandise is made available to the buyer (via agreement with the seller), then Chairish should be sued for that.
