Avvo to me is a fraud,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, perhaps fixed in many ways,,,,,,,, I rated a lawyer in La Quinta Ca... James Dunne... who was a bait and switch lawyer, hired him... he failed to show up at four court appearances,,,,,,,,,, sent a lawyer who did not know my case, four different ones,,,,,,,, in three months I had no correspondence but a new bill for over 13,000 I fired him... he put my case in Jeopardy according to the Judge... I sent in at least fifty reviews to Avvo and finally said little to nothing near the end, each time my review was denied,,,,,,,,,, you cannot give a negative and true report on this lawyer because it is blocked
DON'T TRUST THEM
This is just an advertisement in general- it is not for consumers. They only accept good reviews. I had tried rioting a review of an experience I had for the sole purpose of hoping that no one else could be caught in that trap.
However, no matter how I worded it including actual facts- they rejected it.
As a consumer this website is counter productive.
I had a bad experience during an initial consultation with a lawyer. I wrote a truthful, factual review on Avvo, which got rejected. The same lawyer had other, glowing reviews which were clearly shills - and no negative comments at all.
Clearly Avvo isn't interested in honestly reviewing lawyers. I don't see the point of it and suggest it be avoided.
All of the attorneys I got from AVVO made stupid negligent mistakes and refused to do what i asked, violating the most basic rules of conduct for any attorney. AVVO gave one of them a 10 when she was completely inexperienced and cost me a fortune. Many of them are corrupt and paid off so the site is probably manipulated with pay offs as well. Whether you have a little to lose or a lot, do not trust this site. When you write a negative review, they will not post it and if it is posted, it will soon be removed.
AVVO is the most ridiculous, non-merit based "rating" system on the planet. I feel awful for anyone who is really looking for help and relies on this website. AVVO's ratings are based on how often an attorney answers free questions on AVVO (accuracy in answering is irrelevant to AVVO-- just some words typed gets you points), and based on how many of their lawyer friends they can get to "endorse" them. ACTUAL CLIENT REVIEWS AND EXPERIENCE ON AVVO ARE IRRELEVANT TO AVVO'S RATING PROCESS. AVVO would be a complete joke if it weren't playing a serious game with people's lives. STAY AWAY FROM AVVO!
Avvo blocked my review for Attorney Mario Cappogrosso. I wrote about my experience with this attorney as follows:
"I wouldn't recommend this attorney to anybody.
I applied for his services at Coney Island NY DMV on seat belt traffic violation case. Mr. Capogrosso collected money from me and never showed up again (before, during, after the hearing) nor returned my phone calls. My case was failed.
I DO NOT WANT OTHER PEOPLE TO SUFFER THE SAME.
PLEASE BE AWARE."
Dont trust avvo
Keep looking up attorneys and their avvo reviews as i become familiar with them and their accomplishments. Avvo looks worse with each attorney i "get to know" through legitimate experience. Want names?
I posted a review about attorney Mike Gruhin. My review was accurate and honest about this attorney. Was contacted by Avvo claiming the attorney said I wasn't his client. I Wrote back to them and stated he is right I wasn't his client. He refused to take my case because he said he was too busy and my case wasn't enough money for him to pursue. I gave him one star. Avvo edited my review and left out a lot of information and he still has Ten stars. If Mr. Gruhin was so busy he would have time to go online and review all the reviews people write about him and dispute what he doesn't like. AVVO is a scam because the tweet the reviews in favor of the attorney.
I wrote several reviews about the law firm with Thomas Atwood on Swift in Richland, Wa. I wrote my review to Avvo stating some specifics concerning how poor of an attorney he was on some very basic issues concerning family law which equated to thousands of dollars. Not only was it the money but it was having to start all over with another attorney and having to try and obtain the very basics and minimums that I was not afforded do to Atwoods lack of knowledge concerning family law. Avvo kept sending back my reviews until I just gave up. Avvo and Thomas Atwood are very very bad choices to make!
I wrote a simple review on AVVO--that anyone thinking of hiring attorney Norman Pattis should first read the malpractice complaints filed against him by his former clients in both state and federal courts. My review was soon deleted by AVVO.
This site does NOT provide an accurate representation of attorneys. I had a terrible experience with an attorney and tried three times to leave an honest review. It was not an antagonistic review in the least; just honest. It is a scam! I even tried to talk to a live, human being. They kept sending me the same list of review guidelines. It's an enormous scam... someone should sue them... :)
You cannot legitimately write a review because they only post what they want you to read. I posted an honest review about a lawyer who dopped my case because I missed an appointment because I had a family member in icu. Sorry if my family comes first I will never use avvo or any of the lawyers they recommend
When I refused to purchase advertising from Avvo, two false anonymous reviews came up on their website. They are great at extortion. Don't be fooled, by the glowing reviews attorneys write for themselves in exchange for a continuing monthly fee to Avvo.
Avvo is advertising for lawyers - it does not provide information for the public. Negative reviews are - for the most part - either not printed or taken off by the attorney.
Agree with all below: the reviews of the lawyers are not legit, they delete what is not useful for them. Because of misguidance with false reviews i had paid for consultation with the most unprofessional, rude and least helpful lawyer ever - Lyon Jemison. But my review has never been posted - he still has 5 star rating, although the most recent rating is from 2013! And i know other people who were unhappy with him, but were not allowed to post the review on avvo.com about him. Don't waste your time with these scammers!
All fluff and not accuracy. Anytime you want to write a bad review, they reject your review. Would stay clear of this sham. Two guy wanting to make money and that's it.
Dear Avvo, based on your bogus testimonials, my sick, elderly mother hired a lawyer to defend me that literally handed my head to the prosecution. These were charges that were easily dismissed or at the very least, reduced. I had to plead guilty to 3 felonies in order to get out of jail to continue caring for mother. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves. I'd mention the lawyer's name but am sure you would not post this, also, i don't feel like getting sued for slander, although i have the facts in writing to back my claim. I can, however, tell everyone i know on facebook about your despicable practice because that is NOT slander!
I was taken in by the Avvo score. $10,000 later, I paid a huge price for their bogus information. The site should be shut down by consumer affairs.
As a consumer, I do not expect Avvo to be a substitute for an actual attorney. But sometimes you don't need legal advice, per se, you just have a legal question (like what form do you need to file for XYZ or what does Civil Code ZYX mean). Now and then you get a straight forward and useful response, most of the time, you get useless, incomprehensible, "legalese" that ends with "consult a local attorney." If the consumer understood the "legalese" used within the worthless response, he wouldn't need to ask Avvo or any attorney registered with it for that matter.
Even worse, some attorneys use the questions section to berate the questioning consumer, jumping to conclusions when they've only been given a fraction of the facts and issuing insulting commentary without knowing what they're talking about; that is a MAJOR turnoff. Some Avvo attorneys are childish "Mean Girls" both he-girl and she-girl. Even this site has trolls... how unfortunate.
Again, I do not expect free legal advice; plenty of attorneys offer consultations. Sometimes you don't need full-blown advice, you simply have a question. If Avvo's attorney's do not want to answer legal questions, then they should stay off the "Ask a Legal Question" page---DUHHH! Sometimes Avvo is helpful, mostly it's not... it's a coin toss.
Avvo's predatory exploitation of clients in desperate need of a trusted professional is criminal. It's only a matter of time before Avvo finds themselves in a class action lawsuits. Short term manipulative profits with longterm legal consequence is a consistent theme among criminals!
Answer: AVVO is managed by attorneys for attorneys. It is a recipe for deception, self-interest and greed.
Answer: I believe it's a scam. There is no correlation between how good an attny is and their avvo rating. Based upon my personal knowledge of several attorneys that i have become very familiar with since unwittingly believing avvo information i would warn people not to trust this site for an impartial assessment of attorneys.
Answer: What is being asserted about rejection of negative reviews is absolutely consistent with my experience. Don't waste your time.
Answer: You actually can't place bad review or rating for attorney anywhere, including Martindale Hubbell or similar websites. Even if bad review is approved and posted, it will be removed by attorney request in a few days.
Answer: Because AVVO is a scam service that inflates attorney ratings, but systematically blocks negative reviews. Avoid at all costs.
Answer: It's BAD! Don't trust AVVO! A lot of attys put 5 STAR reviews about themselves and will have the 1 star reviews removed. BEWARE of your atty if s/ he has a 6.5 or has a lot of 5 STAR reviews and still not a high score
Answer: I am an attorney and had contact with this company years ago when it posted my "profile" without my consent, apparently scraping it from some legitimate source like the state bar website. I was assigned a low rating (6.5/10) based on no reviews whatsoever and encouraged to join and get recommendations from other attorneys on the site to raise my rating. I'm a 20+-year practitioner with no complaints from clients or the bar. Quite simply, it's a scam along the lines of "America's Who's Who" where the people listed in the database are the source of income for the enterprise. If attorneys don't "join" and pay they're added to the database without their consent and assigned a random low rating pulled out of nowhere. I don't see any basis to rely on "Avvo" for attorney recommendations. Try Martindale-Hubbell or recommendations from the local bar association real-life attorneys.
