“Frustrated”

I have a Premium account with Roommates.com. Why are all messages going unread? I've never had this happen in the past. It's like no matter how many potential roommates I reach out to, this is happening. Frustrating..

I just wanted to write this review to express my frustrations with this website. I paid to receive my first message (which I thought was odd) and that turned out to be a "fake person".

The next 3-4 messages I received were either deleted because they were inappropriate or "they couldn't find the message". Seriously if this company is going to make people pay to receive messages, they should invest more time in assisting people find decent roommates. Waste of time and money. Better off using Facebook than this site to find roommates. Seems like they ONLY care about making money.

Hello,

It's unfortunate you haven't had any luck using the site yet. Roommates.com is a bulletin board service so those using the site can vary daily.

The site does remove messages that are sent from fraudulent accounts that are found on the site to keep their members safe.

If you contact customer support at support@roommates.com they will be happy to refund your charge the messages you received were not there or not valid when you paid for a membership.

If you would like to give us another try we would love to give you some tips on how to make the most out of your membership.

Thank you,

Man thats frustrating... let me walk you through what your experience will be like offering a room:

You enter all your information, data that they mine on you, your home, your pictures, your location, your hobbies, your interests, your gender, your preferences, etc. Then you reach out to people, and when someone responds, you have to PAY to see the response, and guess what... it could be a "no thanks."

They refer to it as Upgrading to VIP to see messages, but free to do mostly everything else up till that point... real bait-and-switch there in my opinion. Now I'm out a couple bucks, and some bastards Zuckerberg'd me for my private information. Stay away from this site unless you have a nice place, in a large city with lots of demand. Then it might be worth it. Good luck.

Hello,

It was not our intention to mislead you in regards to the memberships. You are able to include your contact information in the free messages that you send to other members so that only one of you have to pay for an upgrade to be able to contact one another outside of the website, so there are ways to find a roommate using the free portion of the site.

Hopefully you give us another try. If you have additional questions on how the site works please contact us at support@roommates.com.

I posted an add on Roommates.com using their free account thinking i'd be able to send and receive emails for free, as that would make sense for the site to work. However, to read your emails or send your emails you HAVE to upgrade your account. The problem with this is that even if you do upgrade your account, which I did, others cant view the mail you've sent them unless they too have an upgraded account. Ive sent out over 20 emails with no responses only to realize that the recipients don't have access to the messages ive sent. A MASSIVE waste of money and time.

Very frustrated.

Hello,

This is Roommates.com Customer Support.

I am sorry to hear about your dissatisfaction with Roommates.com as well as the fact that you feel misled by the website with regard to the upgraded memberships. Please understand that is not our intention.

When you go to the Roommates.com website under the More Info tab, you will find the Frequently Asked Questions page. On this page you will find information on how the site works with the free membership and the upgraded membership, along with the membership cost options. As a basic member you can add a profile, browse your matches and send RoomMail messages, all free of charge.

When we started this service, we designed the site so that people are able to utilize the website without purchasing a membership and many of our users have successfully found roommates this way. The most common ways are to send contact information within emails to other users and post contact information within profile descriptions for other users to see. So while it is true that without having a paid membership you do not have the benefit of being able to read Roommates.com emails that you receive, you do still have the opportunity to achieve your goals while utilizing the free portions of the site.

The site doesn't have a notification showing who is upgraded at this time, but we appreciate the suggestion and will keep it in mind for future site improvements.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact our Customer Support through the website and we will be happy to assist you.

I posted my ad on the site and received maybe 4 matches. Two didn't work out and one responded that their prescription had run out that day and they couldn't respond back. Another was a complete scam who said she lived out of the state going to school yet wanted her " lawyer" to draw up papers for me but they was unable to show it of course. Then a couple new matches appeared and there was nothing about them written and no response when I tried to reach out to them. It came across as fake matches to keep me on the site.

It's unfortunate that the site didn't work out for you. We are not a scam and do not post fake roommates on the site.

Roommates.com is a bulletin board service, so we cannot guarantee that users will respond to you or that there will be people using the site that are looking in the same area or for the same living situation.

Hopefully you will find a roommate soon. We wish you the best in your search.

I was not happy so I sent an email stating my dissatisfaction. I happened to go back to my personal email account and found I received another 'match' email with a link attached. I clicked the link to see if it brought up an actual profile only to find I had my paid membership downgraded to basic. I thought immediately "SCAM" since I had 20+ days left. 2 hours later I was back into my emails and found they sent me an email stating they were sorry for my dissatisfaction and I would be getting a refund... I removed my previous 'hate' rating for this site and updated it. Hey, how much can ya complain when they ARE good enough to refund you?!... You can't

I found the right roommate for me through this site. It was easy and quick. Of curse I had to do my own back ground check on the person before agreeing to share my home with her but its worked out. I had many responses and several people to choose from. I recommend this site.

The rep from the site said it's free to view and email potential roommates. Untrue. If you've signed on as a freebe, you MUST upgrade to a paid account to view any email sent to you by other members who have attempted to send you emails. My suspicion is that staffers are actually sending emails because the email I received dated 4/20/12 stated in the subject line: "We're a perfect match." Hello? I don't think so.

Buyer beware!

Have used service over the years for roommates search, past 2-3 years the paid site has proven worthless, have gotten roommates from truly free sites more easily... because they have free and paid option, (i paid), many just sign up without full info/details, then don't reply to interest emails because they can't receive/read them, and you don; t know if someone is paid or not- I have a record of at least 18 emails i sent to prospective roommates on the site, not one responded, probably because they were not paying members- what a waste of my time and money, arrgghh!

Hello,

It's unfortunate that you aren't getting as many responses as you would like. As a bulletin board service some areas may have more roommate potentials than others.

All members can send messages to other members for free, but it is up to each member whether they would like to respond to the member sending them a message.

We will have some new updates to the site coming very soon that will hopefully make your experience on our site more positive so keep an eye out for the new changes.

If you have additional questions on how to make the most out of your membership please contact us at support@roommates.com.

The site served me well; I paid for a membership and found someone close to where I lived before and it was worth the time and bit of money to find a place and a rent I could afford, since I didn't qualify for an apartment on my own. The website itself feels a bit "retro" and outdated, but since it is mainly textual, everything loaded more easily.

Got a compatible roommate, however, the site wanted me to pay $9.99 for membership to read the emails. We ended up having to text instead of using the inbox in the website. If we could read emails without being prompted to pay, I would have given 5 stars. Overall, good experience and I would use them again.

Diana has rooms for rent bur, I would NEVER EVER recommend her! She keeps your deposits at the end of your lease! She will make up excuses just to not pay it back. She lives off her rent money! She's very controlling, will get up in your business and go through your room. She has rules on how to share the bathrooms and kitchen. It's common sense! If you choose to use her, don't say you weren't warned.

My place is in a middle-income suburb so my pool of potential roomies is quite small. Roommates.com makes that limitation much less of an obstacle, so I am consistently able to target those few applicants who really need to live in my area. I highly recommend this tool to anyone regardless of your location. It works great for all areas.

Looking for a room to rent, very few useful contacts and the six of them were in the first couple days as they were long existing. The remainder additional contact over the month were a few other persons looking for a room (anywhere location) so seemingly just filling up online space. I found a splendid room via Craig's List.

Scam artist has found the perfect breeding ground for committing fraud. roommates.com is sitting by while honest members are being robbed blindly.
I was robbed of $2500. 00 and there is nothing I can do about it except to warn unsuspecting people of the scam.

Verified purchase

A few days after signing up for a free account I received a 'perfect' match to my criteria. I then paid for a three day subscription (fortunately only 3 day) and after messaging the 'perfect' match, that profile disappeared.

I believe roommates created a fake profile so I'd pay to message the person.

Hello,

Roommates.com does not create fake profiles, but we do remove scammers that are found on the site. When the scammer is removed we also delete the messages they sent out to protect our members.

You are always welcome to use the free portion of the site to find a roommate by adding your contact information in the free messages you get to send to other members, that way only one of you would need to pay for a membership to communicate outside of the website.

If you have additional questions about how the site works, or if you would like a refund for your charge due to the removal of a scam account please contact us at support@roommates.com.

So I hardly got any responses. Even if I did get a message, the person wouldn't be back on the site for weeks. I responded immediately to inquires and would never hear back. This site is a scam. I gave them 30 days worth of my money - never again. Why can't these sites be shut down?

I have used this site (paying member) for one month, I received only 3 inquiries, my emails never got any answers back. So it looks they want all inquirers to pay, others wise they will not transfer their inquiries even to paying members. It is close to a scam.

Hello,

It's unfortunate that you have not had good luck finding a roommate on our site. As a bulletin board service your responses will vary depending on who and where members are looking for roommates.

Sending messages is always free regardless of your membership level, You can see the name of the person that is messaging you, and you do have the option to put your contact information in the messages you send out. Eventually either you or the person that you are messaging will have to pay for a membership in order to connect outside of the website.

If you want tips on how to make the most out of your posting on the website don't hesitate to contact us at support@roommates.com.

This is the only roommate website I've encountered where I regularly get scammer emails. In fact, the vast majority of my emails have been from scammers in one case from the same one twice after it changed its user name after having been detected. On two occasions after my premium membership expired and I paid the fee again so I could read my email, I checked my email and guess what? Scammers. I really think that in a case such as this some consideration should be given to those who've paid the fee just so they can read their email only to find that it was suppressed by the Fraud Department. This strikes me as highly suspicious. I wouldn't recommend this site to anyone.

The tools roomates.com provides are easy to use and very effective. The only con is the people advertising rooms for rent most don't even reply but only the serious ones do. But my experience with Roomates.com was first rate. Thank you for offering such a great service and tool.

I had 4 weeks to find a roommate. I paid for 1 month. I found 3 different people interested and ended up finding a roommate whom I really like in just 3 weeks. After a month or so of inactivity, they automatically deactivated my account. I know not everyone will have the same experience, but I have 0 complaints and I'm very satisfied with this service.

I've used the site in the past and it worked well. This time, they took my money, sent me one email with matches and will not even let me sign in. I've been trying to cancel and I can't. I finally sent an email to email that sent the matches, and I haven't heard back. I'm going to have to report them as fraudulent. This is too bad because they were a decent site in the past.

5 years ago I used this site and it was great. This time this was my experience. One roommate changed his address told me he was on his way and never moved in, the other moved to Chicago, I had another try to play the let my boss send you a check cash it and you send me the balance scam and another person contact me trying to scam me for steam giftcards where the fbi got involved. I contacted roommates.com and they refused to provide me a phone number and said have the police email them. If you want to be targeted, stressed out and involve the authorities then by all means use this site. I deleted my account and will never use this site again, it's a nightmare.
