“Frustrated”

I have a Premium account with Roommates.com. Why are all messages going unread? I've never had this happen in the past. It's like no matter how many potential roommates I reach out to, this is happening. Frustrating..

5 days and not a single request. Except of course for the constant upgrade pitch. I contacted them and have had no response. Obviously they only want the monthly fee. Stay away.

Hello,

It's unfortunate that you have not had any luck finding a roommate on the site. Roommates.com is a bulletin board service and matches you with others on the site with similar preferences. Ideally there are members on the site looking for the same thing you are in the same area, but that is not always the case.

We created Roommates.com to be as budget-friendly as possible, which is why we allow you to send messages, review profiles, etc without having to upgrade. But with most sites, we do have premium features that make using the site more successful. Many users save money by waiting until they receive a response or get a message and then upgrading at that time while choosing the upgrade plan that best fits their needs. You also have the option to include your contact information in your messages if you would like so that only one party has to pay for an upgrade to be able to communicate outside of the website.

Hopefully you find a match for what you are looking for soon.

If you have additional questions or would like some tips on how to get the most out of the site please contact us at support@roommates.com.

They advertise linking you up with people who either have a room or need a room, but when you message, or get a message, you are REQUIRED to purchase a membership before you can read that message.

Complete scam.

Hello,

It's unfortunate that you have not been able to find a roommate yet. Looking for a roommate can be frustrating when you don't get the responses you would like. Your profile is visible on the site and sending messages with your contact information to other members is free. All member do have to pay for a membership to read incoming messages, but if your contact information is included in the message then only one of you would need to purchase a membership in order to communicate outside of the website. Responses depend on who is looking in your area and what price range they are looking in so we can't guarantee people will respond. Hopefully you will find a roommate soon.

Good luck in your search!

Unlike others who have complained about the $20 membership fee I wish this site would get rid of the "freebies". If everyone had to pay then maybe the only people who would take the time to fill out a profile would be serious about finding a roommate. As it stands, the site is filled with absolute crap, fake people, people who put a profile up just for kicks and forget to take it down, etc. And the simple fact that you cannot contact a potential roommate unless you are a paid subscriber negates the effectiveness of the site. At least 1 person has to have paid. I kinda cheated and listed an Outlook email account I created just for finding a roommate. But again, unless someone has paid, you can't even see that. To be fair, several potential roommates (non scam) did contact me but it didn't work out. But that's over a period of about 6 months. It seems to me the site is not a true roommate site. As in 2 people share a place completely 50/50. It's mainly lots and lots of people who have trouble making their mortgage and just want to rent a room.

Hello,

This is Roommates.com Customer Support.

I am sorry to hear you did not receive more valid responses. Roommates.com is a bulletin board service so there will always be some people that are not on the site for the right reasons, but we try to remove them as quickly as possible.

We do have the MatchPlus option on the site, which matches you with members who are looking for a place like you so that you can find a place together.

The Basic membership for Roommates.com is free, and as a basic member you can add a profile, browse your matches and send RoomMail messages, all for free. It is true that in order to read messages received from other members, you must become a Choice Member.

When we started this service, we designed the site so that people are able to utilize the website without purchasing a membership and many of our users have successfully found roommates this way. The most common ways are to send contact information within emails to other users and post contact information within profile descriptions for other users to see. So while it is true that without having a paid membership you do not have the benefit of being able to read Roommates.com emails that you receive, you do still have the opportunity to achieve your goals while utilizing the free portions of the site.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact our Customer Support through the website and we will be happy to assist you.

I was looking to rent a room in my place so I registered with roomates.com
Come to find out that I cant read messages if I don't have a membership. So I buy the two months membership only to wait weeks with no response. I have reached to 200 people and I got only two responses that they weren't interested. I believe most of the people don't reply because they don't have a membership. So I emailed them and asked to connect me to VIP members to the one that can communicate/answer my messages. They said they couldn't do that... so here I am wasting hours reaching out to people that don't have a paid membership. It's a waste of time.

Joined as a VIP out of desperation, only to receive responses from idiots who felt the need to cuss me out and call me "ugly as whore" completely unprovoked. I reported them and zero action was taken. "Matches" and "search results" always include numerous people NOT EVEN LOOKING IN THE AREA OF MY LISTING! Also with budget well below the prices in my area with no way of filtering them out of results! This site is a SCAM!

Hello,

Unfortunately, sometimes people are not on their best behavior when they are sending messages online. So we make it easy to report them or not have to interact with them anymore. There is an option to block members on the left side of your messages to keep them from contacting you.

We do program some "cushion" into our algorithms to allow profiles to be matched who we think might still be a great match overall, but might not necessarily match all preferences precisely.

Members who need a room can specify up to 3 city/state locations, with a surrounding radius around each one. As long as your home falls within one of the radiuses the member has selected they can appear as a match. We allow each member the ability to select their own radius based on what they individually feel is appropriate for their needs.

If you are still looking for a roommate hopefully you will give us another try. We would be happy to give you some tips on how to make the most out of your membership. You can contact us at support@roommates.com.

I am very disappointed with this "service". I had very few matches because I have a nine year old daughter, which is to be expected. It takes a very open-minded non-parent to welcome a kid into their home. However, I did have a handful of matches. Of those 5-6 matches, 3 were VERY CLEARLY SCAMS. They had poor writing skills or English was their second language although they all claimed to be from the "States" and have a recently deceased father. They all sent a list demanding that documentation be signed saying that we're reserving to be their roommate sight unseen and that we had to send security deposit and first month at the same time. They were all unavailable until several months in the future, and oddly none had friends in the area to show the place although they all "lived there". Highly unlikely! One stopped replying immediately and deleted their posting once I started asking questions. Another challenged me and asked me what was wrong with me, why would I think that it was a potential scam (10 messages in) when they still refused to show me the place, told me I could drive by, and were still asking for money. Horrible experience!

Hello,

This is Roommates.com Customer Support.

I am sorry to hear you came in contact with a scammer on the site. Roommates.com is a bulletin board service so there will always be some people that are not on the site for the right reasons, but we try to remove them as quickly as possible.

If you paid for a membership and the message received was a scam message, you are entitled to a refund.

We are doing all we can to protect our members and keep scammers from posting on our site. When a fraudulent account is detected by our Fraud Department, the account and any messages sent from that account are automatically removed in order to protect the legitimate members of Roommates.com. Unfortunately, many times scammers don't make themselves known until they get you to email them through their private email address, which Roommates is not privy to. We do offer some helpful tips to recognize scammers and avoid some pitfalls on the Support tab on the site.

Every profile also has a Report Member button in the upper right hand corner that can be used to send the account information of a suspected scammer to our Fraud Department for review. You can also send the Nicknames and/or Email Address of any profile you believe to be fraudulent to scamalert@roommates.com. If the account is found to be fraudulent it will be deleted.

We hope you will give us another try. Please contact our Customer Support through the website and we will be happy to assist you with a refund if you paid for a membership.

If I could give it a zero I could. Who asks people to pay a 'membership fee' so you could find a room to live in which is BY THE WAY - A BASIC HUMAN NECESSITY. Lmao tf. We are already going to end paying for monthly rent for the room. You are probably going to say 'oh include your contact number when you message them for free' so the person on the other end who can read messages cos they have a membership can read it and contact you outside the website. Haha you know what? Nah. We don't even pay a 'membership fee' online to do online grocery shopping, plus other hundreds of websites helping people find homes/rooms. This website is unecessarily greedy af. Plus your users are not legit/properly verified.

I have an ad for a room and only paid roomers respond via email. If you want to respond to a possibly roomer, you have to pay to read the responses.

UPDATE 9-2-2015 - Any mail u get - u can't read unless you are a paying person. Any mail you send will get to the other person, but they cannot read it if they are not a paying person. Unless your letter to the person includes all your contact, and they pay the fee, no one can read what you wrote to them. They might pay to read, then they respond back to you, but if you aren't paying the fee, you can't read what they wrote (a waste of their money!). Basically, if you are serious about renting, pay the fee and get the hits. They can't read your description now unless they are a paying member. So, putting contact info in the description is now useless unless they pay the fee. The site does do well, though.

I had a newspaper advertisement for a roommate, paid $66 and got all the WRONG people calling as I was not allowed to say, "PROFESSIONAL WOMEN ONLY". I discovered roommates.com and I, IMMEDIATELY, was on a trial period and sent possible roommates. I sent all of the, potential, roommates a message saying Hello and 3 responded, but 1 returned my call. It just so happened that she is the perfect roommate. Thank you roommate.com. You all ROCK!

Chloe Cruickshank and Emily Fleur Butler are completely untrustworthy. I was their roommate/landlord for three years, was understanding when they were frequently late on rent and didn't pay bills for months, and when they first moved in allowed them to pay less than a month for their deposit. At the end of their tenancy they stopped paying rent and bills entirely a month before they were scheduled to move out. They said their deposit would cover the rent. I was understanding again, because I trusted them, and they promised they would pay the outstanding bills.

Then, they stayed longer than their scheduled move out date, thereby owing the remaining rent missing from their deposit as well as an extra week's rent. Again, they promised repeatedly to pay the difference before they moved out.

Lo and behold, move out date arrives and they leave while I'm out, without paying me. They have been ghosting me ever since, in spite of texts, emails and calls begging them to pay me the nearly £1000 they owe me.

Not to mention, they left their room completely disgusting, the walls were covered with mold, the floor was littered with dirt, dust, trash, dirty socks and press-on nails. I honestly don't know how they were comfortable living like that, it was truly gross.

I'm a student without a lot of money myself, and have been left high and dry by two women whom I trusted. Don't make my mistake! They will lie if they want to get out of paying, and they are just plain gross.

Please, avoid Emily Fleur Butler and Chloe Cruickshank.

4* for not making everyone pay and the limited number of people I can communicate with inside the app. I used roommates.com to find a roommate to move into my place in 2005 and again after I moved in 2007 (14 years, then he moved out and got married). I'm looking again and pickings are a little slim since I am looking for only a mature/no drama male. I am a woman and prefer not to tell someone my name and where I live until my fiance and I have had a chance to meet and chat with them, so Facebook is not an option. So, I'm resigned to paying $15 a month and staying on top of the new listings so I can contact potential renters before they get jaded by the scammers. It isn't perfect, but I don't blame the site for that and they do have a report button and you can block people from messaging you. If they can't read my message and aren't willing to pay $15 to find a place to live, they probably aren't going to pay $45 for a background/credit check or pay their rent either so I won't contact them off-site. As far as paying, do you work for free? I'd love to find a roommate site that does a background/credit check as part of the sign-up process, would get rid of the scammers and some of the non-paying and violent/dishonest roommates and well worth the price.

So Ridiculous, so just like everyone else, I Only Signed Up for a 3 DAY SUBSCRIPTION. Blew up my mailbox with junk, didn't find the site useful at all. Nobody signs up here, maybe like a few listings a day in my area and I live in East La. Found my own place elsewhere, yesterday, so mind you I haven't even used it in a couple days. Today I check my bank account, and see that they charged me a 29.20$ Charge! That I NEVER AGREED TO. Literally, there was no fine print. NOTHING. THEY AUTOMATICALLY CHARGE YOU WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT. Called Chase right away and they shut down my debit card, because CANNOT TRUST THEM. Plus they don't even have a phone number to contact them on site, all they have is a phony $#*! email. Like WTF is that going to do? SAVE YOURSELF. DO NOT USE

Hello,

This is Roommates.com Customer Support.

We are glad you were able to find a roommate, even if it wasn’t through our site.

Roommates.com does not automatically rebill our members. We do not offer a rebill option. We also do not have a membership option for $29.20. Roommates.com membership options are $5.99 3 Days, $19.99 30 Days, and $29.99 60 Days, and again we do not have a rebill option. Do you possibly have us confused with another site?

In order to keep our prices low, we avoid having to staff a Call Center by limiting the use of telephones and only accept email correspondence, but if you send an email we will get back to quickly. Also, our phone number is always located on your statement if you upgraded your account.

Hopefully you will be able to contact the website that charged you and get a refund.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact our Customer Support through the website and we will be happy to assist you.

I thought that I would get the phone numbers and emails to potential renter. So I could contact them and see if their room for rent was still available. After paying I noticed the only added info i was getting from potential renters was the cross streets. No phone numbers. No address. No e-mails address. The only way to "contact" renters is through roomates, com website. And there is guarantee that the site is logit or that the renters on there aren't completely fake. I get more for free from craigslist. I regret wasting my time and money on this site.

Hello,

I'm sorry you feel misled by the website with regard to the upgraded memberships. Please understand that it is not our intention to do so. The cost and what it includes is on the More Info tab on the main page of the website. It is completely up to each member on whether or not they want to include their contact information on their profile or in their messages.

It was our intentions when we started this site for it to be an effective tool for people regardless of whether or not an upgrade was purchased. To achieve this goal, we have designed our site so you are able to utilize the website without purchasing a membership and many of our users have successfully found roommates this way. The most common ways for people do to so is to send contact information within emails to other users and/or post contact information within profile descriptions for other users to see. So while it is true that without having a paid membership you do not have the benefit of being able to read emails that you receive through our site, you do still have the opportunity to achieve your goals while utilizing the free portions of the site.

As with most websites, there are added benefits to purchasing an upgrade. Those benefits include having full access to your roommates.com emails as well as being able to view larger photos, maps, and the comment sections of other member's profiles. Purchasing an upgraded membership can be done at any time. Many individuals who utilize Roommates.com wait to purchase an upgrade until they have several emails waiting for them. This way, they fully maximize their upgrade.

If you have any questions on how to utilize the website and/or make the most out of your membership, please let me know and we will be happy to provide you with additional tips on using Roommates.com.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us at support@roommates.com.

I needed a place, I used Roommates.com paid membership about 8-9 years ago and I found a great roommate. Now I had a place to rent and I posted an ad on roommates.com. I mostly got emails that had been "flagged by their fraud department". They don't show you the content of those emails, just tell you the message was removed. Emails I sent to prospective roommates never got answered. (Now I know why, but more on that later!). I decided to upgrade my membership. I did get a couple of messages, but not enough to justify the paid membership; and I still was getting "flagged" messages often. I also sent several emails to possible "matches" but all those emails went unanswered. Once my paid membership ended I decided not to renew, but kept the free ad running just in case. I did get a few "flagged" emails and a couple of what appears to be legit emails, but it turns out "I can't read them unless I pay for membership". What a bunch of BS! Now I know the reason why all those e-mails I sent to prospective roommates were never answered, most of them didn't have the paid membership. I get that some of the "premium" features should only available to those who pay, but the ability to read/respond to emails should not be one of them. It seems now this site is just a scam with made up profiles to make it look bigger than it is. It used to be a good service, but that's no longer the case. 8-9 years later you think the web site would have been upgraded, but it looks just as it did then.

Verified purchase

I get emails, open them immediately. Click on my new match, "Jess C., or Philip C.", and the "Profile not found" message. I opened the email 2 seconds after receiving it, and the profile is already gone. This happens about 9 out of 10 "matches", or "messages" I get. Less than 10 seconds, and the profiles are gone(empty links'). It took me longer to actually delete my profile, than it did to respond to these emails. These emails behave exactly like a phishing email. They get you to click on a link, an empty link, but nonetheless. Very suspicious behavior for a website(or the best security ever). The ridiculous names used in some of these profiles are obviously written by people who lack in English comprehension. Your search area is for a certain radius, and you get matches from 30 miles outside of it. The only interaction I had, was with a lady 50 miles away, who wanted 2X as much as I was looking to pay, but not one person from my area. My sister did find a place using it but, I don't feel it is a trustworthy site. Enter at your own risk.
