I have a Premium account with Roommates.com. Why are all messages going unread? I've never had this happen in the past. It's like no matter how many potential roommates I reach out to, this is happening. Frustrating..
I read the reviews and I am a believer of all that was said, they constantly send you msgs claiming you have a match, but no one ever responds, when I tried to call to inquire before I pay, they don't respond just ask to leave msgs that is never answered, it is a HUGE scam don't pay these guys they are trying to rob you
Such a scam. I paid the inital $3 fee to have a 3 day trial and I just realized, two months later that they were charging me $30 a month to have my account active. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR ROOMMATES.COM. I found my roommate on craigslist and she is totally normal.

Roommates.com does not auto rebill our members. In order to be billed a second time you would have to reenter your billing information, so you don’t have to worry about canceling a subscription. Roommates.com does not have a membership option for $30.00. I’m not sure what company was auto billing you, but be assured it was not Roommates.com.

This was a good site a few years back so I tried it again. Went through the motions of paying for a month since that is how I found my last roommate. Within 5 min. Of signing up I got a scammer "couldn't meet me, wanted to send a contract in email, totally bogus address etc. etc" Everything the negative comments say in here are absolutely true. It gives me recommendations Miles outside of my radius, Most guys who want a room want a single female "18-45" with a room, Most guys who have a room for rent want a single female "18-45" to move in, Most females who have a room for rent want a single female to move in (at least this is understandable). So, yeah, if your a single female "18-45" I guess this is the site for you. I've messaged dozens of people and have had ONE respond, "Thank you HIllary" even though it didn't work out. I have my matches wide open, and there is ONE guy, good ol' Jim, who doesn't care who moves in but as of now hasn't responded to my message. You would have better luck on Craigs list, don't waste you money... Unless of course, your a single female "18-45"

As a bulletin board service we cannot guarantee there will be users in the area you are looking in or that they will contact you. Matches will always vary depending on your preferences and users come go.
You can always put your contact information in the free messages you sent to other users so only one of you would need to pay for a membership in order to communicate outside of the website.

I paid for a month on this and the first page had only TWO people that were even in the area and looking. (there are only 12 people per page) The second page went right to people that WERE looking 30 days ago. Meaning I paid 20.00 for nothing. DON'T DO IT - IT IS WORSE THAN CRAIGSLIST.

Roommates.com is a bulletin board service so your matches will depend on who is looking in your area or who has a place to rent in the area you are looking in. You can try adjusting your preferences to see if you can pull in more matches.
You can use the site for free by including your contact information in the messages you send to other members, there is no cost to do that, so that only one of you have to pay for a membership in order to connect outside of the website.

Never pay money for the service. This guy tried to send me extra money that was then removed from my account. I was trying to scam me. He's from Nigeria.

Unfortunately, sometimes scammers and weirdos do get through which is why we have created a "Reporting" and "Blocking" feature available on all profiles that you can quickly use to flag any account you feel is suspicious. This will ensure that we get eyes on it right away and start to track down what's going on.
Most of the scams are done in the manner described in your email. We do not recommend that you accept any potential roommate possibilities that are willing to send an overpayment in advance in the form of a cashiers check or money order. Most of these users have proved to be scams.

I was seeking a tenant to rent a room in my home
I paid for a membership 4 times and sent out about 15-20 e-mails during each membership and DID NOT get a SINGLE RESPONSE. I ONLY received response back or new matches, after each of my 4 membership had expired. To reply and communicate with my new matches, I had to upgrade and pay again.
IT DOES NOT WORK EVEN IF YOU PAY.
I brought this to the attention of roommates.com, and their response was that have no control over when people respond. I informed them that I will be REPORTING them to the Better Business Bureau!

All members can send out messages to other members for free, and include their contact information if they would like, so there isn't anything keeping members from reaching out and sending you a message. The membership fees are paid to read their incoming messages and see the comments section of member profiles.

It is true that in order to read messages received from other members, you must become a Choice Member. Roommates.com membership options are $5.99 3 Days, $19.99 30 Days, $29.99 60 Days, and we do not automatically rebill our members.

I was looking to rent my extra room longer term than a week or two, but not for a whole year. I was able to rent my space in only 3 days! It worked out great. I highly recommend the service!
Advertising with the word 'free' then waiting until someone receives a message to tell them they have to PAY to be able to read them is dishonest. It is sprung on you as a complete surprise. If you're going to charge to use your site, be up front and honest about it.
You can't throw the word 'free' at people, then put a paywall on a function of that site that renders it completely useless without paying for it.
All this does is make me suspect the overwhelming majority of your users are abandoned profiles that never paid the fee. You don't even have an indicator on profiles of whether or not someone is subscribed!
They have responded, and I'd like to add a rebuttal to two more things they added:
"The most common ways are to send contact information within emails to other users and post contact information within profile descriptions for other users to see."
* Only paying users can view comments on profiles
* I will reiterate that you cannot view a message unless you pay for a subscription.
* They also do not allow you to choose the subject line of the message you send, so you can't put your e-mail in the subject line either.
You're trying to tell me that I can circumvent the requirement to pay for your site, yet none of the things you cited as a method of circumventing payment would actually do that.

For a website where you pay money to communicate to potential roommates, you'd think they'd better security and screening for scammers in the website. 3 out of 4 people I've conversated with tried to scam me. 1 of which almost got close for me to sign an agreement.
The person faked me with pictures of the apartment, a convoluted story and history of the apartment, and a picture of ID which was probably stolen and taken as a scam. I luckily researched the address and found out that the listing was a false one, and confronted the person which ended with no reply. The person left with a picture of my id, and minor information, like my address. Which he could probably use to catfish another...
The website will come up with BS about it not being their fault, and that it is a "billboard" website. But if its polluted with scammers, then IT IS your problem. You guys have an obligation to crack down on these things especially if you're charging people money for a service. More then just deleting their posts after its too late. Its like hotels saying its not their fault if stuff gets stolen in people's room and saying, "we only provide shelter". Trash website which doesn't take responsibility on a major issue.

Please be assured that other members are receiving the mail you're sending, but it is up to each member on whether they want to respond. We suggest sending mail to all the members on your match list if you haven't already, and using the Power Search to find additional members. Also, you can try making criteria on your profile more broad if there's any room for it, which may increase your match list.

You'll then be able to browse matches, send and receive messages, and edit your account / profile. If you were disconnected during sign up, don't worry, your information has been saved. Just revisit the site and log in with your user name and password. It says that you can send and RECEIVE messages, but RECEIVE is where they trick you. Yes, you can receive messages, but they fail to tell you that YOU HAVE TO PAY TO OPEN YOUR MESSAGES.

If you are looking for a roommate, this is the best and probably safest site to find what you are looking for. I previously looked on craigslist and that was a huge mistake!
