I have been a big seller and buyer on The Real Real since the beginning of the company in 2015! I have made about $400,000 selling pieces that I was not going to wear again. Also, I am a buyer of mostly "pristine" and "excellent" items on consignment. There are so many people who buy things and not wear/use them at all, and sell them new in the box with tags!
Therealreal is a scam. They take high-value items for consignment and list them at ridiculously low prices, allowing their internal employees to steal them from online clients' carts or even after payments have been made. They cancel transactions and resale the items to their friends, who then post them on eBay for a profit. Please do not consign with this company; you will receive almost nothing for your high-value stuff. The company has no control over their employees, so employees do whatever they want, including defrauding their customers and running a side business for themselves
The Real Real routinely sends out items that are damaged, have holes, are missing parts or are broken, yet the condition is listed as "Excellent. No visible signs of wear." There are several problems with this. First, it's dishonest. TRR wouldn't last 5 minutes on ebay. Second, the customer service reps will blithely assure you that you can always return the item. Hello? There's a frigging pandemic going on! Third, and the worst part, when you alert them to the hole, the damage, the broken parts, the missing pieces, the items they said would be included but weren't, etc., that were not disclosed, they'll relist w/o noting the damage you've taken so long to tell them about, so some other poor sucker will buy it. Case in point: I recently returned something with a clasp that wouldn't stay closed. I called, explained the problem, and put a note in the box. No point in a clasp that doesn't work! TRR got the item yesterday, on a Sunday, immediately relisted it using the same "Excellent. No signs of wear." description. So, since they KNOW there's a problem, at this point, their behavior isn't so much "dishonest" as out-and-out fraudulent. And it has happened over and over and over. Buttons missing, the jacket is one size but the skirt is another (and it's marked!), torn pant legs, moth holes, not a "dust bag" but a wadded up dirty T-shirt... I bet I've returned at least 25% of the things I've bought on the site during the past year; 20 years on ebay, and I've returned 2 or 3 things, max.
Of course, when it works, it works. But it doesn't "work" all too often. My suggestion is to immediately and minutely examine any item you get from this site. Know that they don't disclose damage/flaws, so be alert. "Light wear on a sleeve" is not the same as EIGHT MOTH HOLES.
Don't bs around with texting. The phone # is *******893; press 1.

I have been using TRR for over 5 years both buying and consigning and although I was a huge fan for a long time, their quality in both the products and services drastically decreased. I bought a Van Cleef ring recently from TRR and it broke off when I tried to wear it. The fact that the jewelry department passed a broken ring through quality control and sold it for a huge price proves how unreliable they are. There are instances where they have been sued and got caught for selling fake items.

I contacted customer service and they won't do anything about it. They take forever to respond to anything and service is terrible. I have been trying to address this issue with them for 2 years now regarding their customer service and they still won't do anything about it. Sure, they increased the number of staff as I don't have to wait 45min-1hr on the phone for them to pick up but what's the point if they don't do anything to help?
The pricing is better at Vestiaire Collective, Tradesy and TBC consignment for the buyer and consigner. As TRR is growing larger they pay less attention to quality and their customers.
Tip for consumers:
DO NOT BUY FROM HERE

Where do I begin?
I was sold a pair of boots that were marketed as Louis Vuitton for $445. I sent an email a few days after receiving my purchase pointing out they were from La Canadienne (with pictures) and is accordance with the site's own pricing, shouldn't have cost me more than $200. I got an email saying someone would get back to me (no one ever did). Two months later, having given up hope of ever hearing from the customer helpline, I wrote to the store nearest to me. Although the assistant manager was much more helpful than their helpline, the best she could do was offer me a $100 site credit or give me a slip to return the boots. (I imagine if I returned them they would be put back up on the website under the same listing and someone else would have the same problems I had.)
I wasn't able to pursue this matter earlier because I was dealing with not getting a refund from ANOTHER order. Again, emailing, calling, and texting the helpline did nothing. They just told me to wait 5-7 business days for a response. After a month of this, I finally filed a claim with PayPal and got a partial refund. This matter still hasn't been resolved to my satisfaction because one item I ordered would only be accepted as a return if I allowed them to sell it as a consignment piece. Surprise! After I got my refund for the other items, they took the consignment item off my account, deeply discounted it, and sold it without crediting me anything. I can't even re-open my claim with PayPal because I already received a partial refund.
It seems like no one on their customer helpline speaks fluent English or is even located in one of their stores or warehouses (which isn't the fault of the representatives I spoke to). I feel like they're limited by the company to only be able to send return tickets (which cost $12) or deflect complaints in hopes that customers get tired of trying.
There may be genuine articles on the site (which was sued by Chanel for selling counterfeit products), but unless you get lucky enough to have a smooth transaction, you'll get ripped off by their terrible return policy and customer service.

Compelled to update on my on-going shopping on this site: They've recently removed ALL info on their site, re any method to receive ANY customer service... my last entry here mentioned a 'text' method, that was INEFFECTUAL in reaching Cust Svc. NOW, it appears that this method is the only way to contact them! On their site, they no longer state their previous EMAIL ADDR for Cust Svc, NOR, their actual phone number. I'd just placed an order, and an item has not been shipped, after 5 days after my order. I cannot contact A HUMAN AGENT! Their previous email address, to which I sent 2 msgs re this order, states 'due to CV issues, expect a reply within 5 days, and 2 WEEKS before a full 'conclusion'/'resolution', to your issue'! ---> NO Customer Service! Their SOLE CONTACT, VIA TEXT, is a joke -- it is the infamously INEFFECTUAL 'virtual assistant', only good to 'burn' thru your time, effort, and utter frustration. This IS my last order, after more than 5 years of shopping. I'll be requesting a chargeback from my credit card firm for this order; an item that will probably NOT BE SHIPPED, yet was charged. --- SHOP AT YOUR RISK! What an embarrassing DEMISE of a formerly, rather impressive 'upscale' site!

To anyone who's interested in my updates: Customer for clothing over 7 years; obviously, am satisfied to remain a customer. Updates, IMHO: 1) Prices hv increased, 2) Clothing selection 'struggles' to keep filled. In Coats, they'd introduced a large 'Unsigned' category; ie, no 'designer' name; mainly fur coats, but overpriced, imho, bc they ARE unsigned, 3) ALL-IMPORTANT FACTOR - Customer Svc: Introduction of service via text, and 'migration' away from phone agents. I tried the 'text' method, and couldn't get past their automatic reply of 'how to return your items', or some such useless queries, and anyway, I required an actual agent to help with a return. The 2nd reason I still shop the site is bc of their reasonable return policy, which is REQUIRED bc their inventory IS PRE-OWNED. If any TRR personnel is reading this msg: Pls DO NOT ELIMINATE YOUR PHONE CUST SVC - else, I will not continue to shop. (again, I didn't find their new service-via-text option useful/easy to use). Their phone agents are now out-of-country; I had to call today with a problem, and had no problems with communication. --- Happy shopping :)

Will make this update succinct... Customer for about 4 yrs, buying clothes only (NO big-designer handbags, nor shoes). Pros: 1) Still one of the best sites insofar as selection, 2) Possible to get a good/great price due to pre-ownership. Cons: 1) HORRIFIC, DETERIORATED Cust Service: 1 hour wait via phone, totally useless via email, 2) Condition of items: Always 50-50 on whether actual condition is as listed-view photos carefully, but expect condition to be WORSE... Just return it! 3) Packing and Shipping: Worse packing than Walmart-clothing is placed in a dustbag, and then in a plastic mailing bag; if bulky, you may get lucky to get a box. All their sites-CA (80% inventory held here), NJ, AND Stores (marketed as handling the "best" pieces-hah!) - handle clothes in this manner, no matter how famous, well-known, or $$$ the designer! (4 yrs ago, NJ used hangers, garment bags AND boxes, for the big designers, BUT NO MORE). To me, $12 ship is OK (shipping is $$-be realistic!), but slowest service that I didn't know possible from UPS - I live in PA, and a CA package takes 8 days! Conclusion: Service has deteriorated/CHEAPENED in all aspects over a short 4 yrs-very frustrating! "Management" is really s--- up! So, if you have the time and patience, good luck and happy hunting!

Forgot to add another comment to my updates re this site- After more than 4 yrs shopping... 1. Selection: Re "designer" brands for pre-owned clothing, the best in my opinion, 2. Condition: "50-50"; beware; descriptions may be inaccurate (untruthful!); the more-famous/popular the designer, more incidents of "inaccuracy". Also, if you like designers who are popular with the counterfeiters, beware; I just returned a clothing item I was quite certain was a fake (and a really bad one; I'm a seamstress, and of course, have designer items). Although the Cust Svc agent was great in handling the return, they simply re-listed it for the next unfortunate customer, 3. Prices: Volatile; the more famous/popular designers prices continue to increase, 4. Customer Svc: Has improved, more agents added; most are courteous, and will attempt to retain you as a (happy) customer. Cust Svc is the reason I'm still shopping here, 5. Pet peeves - Shipping, and CA warehouse packing methods: 90+% of their inventory is stored in CA, and they've contracted for the slowest (ie, cheapest) UPS service- 7+ days from CA to PA - this is ridiculous and irritating! (USPS is 3 days Priority) And worse, this warehouse's packing policy is to squash your purchase in the smallest box they have, no matter what the item is, its size, or designer. Even if it is a very-top-european designer (ie, very-high original price), do not doubt that it will be SQUASHED into a 20x16x5 box (their medium box)! In all the items I've received from them (+90%), I believe that this warehouse just does not STOCK a larger box. (This is a slight improvement over their practice 3 yrs ago- I ordered a trench coat, several leather jackets (all w/ an original retail of over $600), and each was SQUASHED into a 16x12 TYVEX BAG as a mailing "container" - can you believe it?! Obviously due to massive complaints, they've moved on into small boxes, haha) If you should be lucky to order an item stocked at their NJ warehouse, now this location does pack your precious item CORRECTLY; they use their largest box FREELY (28x18x6, approx), as EXPECTED for a high-original-value item! (Shout-out to NJ!) So, depending on what you like, and what you would accept, you may enjoy shopping here :))

Another random update of my shopping (as a customer for 4 years). Pros: 1) Still one of the better sites for upper-end clothing insofar as selection, and possible expected condition, 2) Possible to get a good/great price (because of pre-ownership). Cons: 1) Deteriorated, HORRIFIC customer service- like recent comments, waits of an hour via phone, worst I've experienced. But, most agents are reasonable with most requests. Useless service via email- a reply over several/many days. 2) Pricing: Erratic; higher for what they consider big-name designers. 3) Condition of Items: 50-50 if the condition is as listed; they have ALWAYS minimized/failed to include negative descriptions - Just return it! 4) Packing & Shipping: CHEAP practices-the item is placed/stuffed(!) into a dustbag, then into a outer mailing bag; if bulky, like a coat/jacket, then "possibly" into a box -- worse than Walmart! Four yrs ago, if the item was stored in NJ (~10-20% of inventory), and the item was truly a big designer (orig retail price in the Thousands), they would place it on a hanger and garment bag, then into a box - this is a "proper" way to treat such an item! But now, ALL sites-NJ, their STORES(! Marketed as holding the "best/like-new" items), and CA (always handled items in this way)-treat ALL items as described above -- "how to save $5, but lose cust goodwill"! The only "good" thing about shipping is the cost - $12 is OK for UPS, $20 for expedited, but-is their slowest service-I live in PA, and have to wait 7-10 calendar days! Conclusion: If you like upper-end clothing, and have the patience and time for atrocious cust service, poor item handling (+cost, you may have to send the item to be pressed), and returns, this site may be acceptable... good luck and happy hunting!

Another update for this site, as a problem has recurred (for me)... General comments re this site (I only buy clothes, shoes & handbags): 1) Good inventory, 2) Truthful listing descriptions are the problem- consider 50-50 that the item's condition has been honestly provided. If "top designer", my experience is that damage, extreme signs of wear, etc, have been deliberately NOT LISTED so the item "appears" to be in acceptable state for wearing. 3) The saving grace for #2 is their phone cust. Service; most reps are courteous, and will work with you for a return, or issue with the item. Latest development (late 2018) is addition of telework for their reps, so perhaps this situation will improve the morale of their staff (previously encountered several very terse, "unhappy" reps). 4) Newest warning: Items out of Brisbane, CA location can be inappropriately packed- I just received a leather jacket (approx original retail $700+) that was absolutely SQUASHED into a box the size for SHOES, 13x10x3! And, delivery before that was a TOP DESIGNER trench coat (sz Sm, womens), PLUS a pair of TOP DESIGNER sandals, BOTH SQUASHED into their next-larger size box, 16x11x4! (Delivery of a trench coat (sz Med) last year was simply packed in a SMALL! Tyvex-type bag, not a box!) All this out of their CA warehouse; either management loves this manager for this dubious shipping "economy", or, they should be ALERTED... This kind of economy can possibly damage the items, but definitely IS CHEAP, clearly inappropriate for the particular high-$ item, and for PUBLIC RELATIONS! How can you continue to tout your "exclusivity" for high-end goods if you practice this kind of presentation and delivery? (BTW, all the items out of their NJ location are wonderfully and correctly, packed, in contrast - No complaints there) So, my conclusion: Take care with your selections, expect dissatisfaction with their listing descriptions, and perhaps, become acquainted with phoning their cust. Service for a remedy. (Their email service is possibly too slow; 2 days to respond)
Date of experience: November 24, 2018
Am compelled to post this update bc my present situation. One of the items I just received has damage that was not disclosed in the listing. Tried to contact Cust Svc that has recently devolved to NON-EXISTENCE, insofar as VIA HUMANS, leaving 2 frustrating 'options': 1) Via text, which just gets you to an AI/automated program, and (out of desperation) 2) via email. Tried 1), and gave up after a tedious question-&-answer game that started with the 'voice' asking my first name, my last name...and, I gave up! Am forced to try email: Previously, they had staff on Saturdays who responded, but no longer; if I even get a response, it will be 'within 3-5 business days'. As short as 6 months ago, you could still phone them, and get A HUMAN, but this has been discontinued. I'm theorizing that the poor economy has management rewriting their operational playbook to reduce costs, BUT, TO ELIMINATE EASILY-ACCESSIBLE HUMAN CUSTOMER SERVICE is sadly misguided - they will lose even more customers, myself included. I've been a customer for more than 5 years, and am very disappointed, and frustrated, in Management's devolved 'No Customer Service (So Don't Expect Any)', as evidenced by NO OTHER CONTACT INFO ON THEIR SITE, besides their horrific text-automated system. (At the start of my shopping, more than 5 years ago, their Cust Svc was excellent, including Phone Agents, who nearly always resolved my problems within the call)

I have had several problems that remain unresolved. I understand their "final sale" policy, but when their descriptions are inaccurate, they should accept returns. For example, I bought a pricey Chanel bag that has an odor that has now permeated my entire spare bedroom. I can't wear this bag. No response from customer service.
All of the Louis Vuitton bags in a certain style have inaccurate measurements; the PMs are listed as larger than the GMs, the shorter shoulder straps are listed as longer than the long straps.
The model pictures are useless. They take the bag and photoshop the bag's image onto a generic model and the picture of the bag is not to scale in proportion to the model or even how one usually wears certain bag styles, e.g. a shoulder bag is poorly photoshopped into the model's hand.
I did hear back from customer service about the LV measurement issue. They sent me the generic "this is how we measure bags" copy-paste, which isn't true or their measurements would be accurate, and told me if I liked a specific bag, they'd measure it for me. Why don't they remedy the problems that are already there?
They don't provide enough pictures to authenticate and to see the full condition of the bag. Their narrative descriptions seem to be getting shorter and shorter.
Do they really expect me to buy a Hermes bag when all they say is "very good" condition, provide limited pictures, some not including the stamping, and get the color of the leather completely wrong? How can they authenticate an item when they aren't close on other obvious details? Customer service didn't even respond to my inquiry about the bag.
Their "estimated retail" prices are not always accurate.
Most of us who buy higher end brands are pretty savvy shoppers. If they want us to continue to pay thousands of dollars, sometimes for just one handbag, they need to have better customer service and more detailed and accurate listings. They make a nice profit from their items. They should act like it.
I'm done. Great concept. Poorly executed.

It has been a few years since I last sold anything on RR. My biggest annoyance with them is that they broke up matching sets of goods, keeping only what they wanted and sent the rest back, which you could not sell as a stand alone item. 1. I sent 2 identical earring and necklace sets to them, one with garnet and one with citrine stones. They kept one entire set and returned the earrings from the other set with the claim that they were not marked, when in fact they were EXACTLY like the set that they chose to keep. 2. I sent a 3 piece St. John pant set. They kept the slacks and the outer jacket and returned the inner sleeveless top, which was of no value to me without the rest of the set. BE CAREFUL WHEN SENDING MATCHING SETS OF ITEMS. THEY APPEAR TO BE TOTALLY ARBITRARY WITH WHAT THEY KEEP. My 3rd and last attempt at dealing with them was in March 2020 when the Covid nonsense started. I did a video inventory with them and sent everything that they said they would take. After 2 months of hearing nothing from them I demanded that they return all of my items. But they made only a partial return and had once again split apart mating items. The worst of splitting apart a beautiful St. John 2 piece set. After repeatedly hounding them they "found" the matching part that they kept.

I'm tired of not having my issues resolved with your customer service dept. I have consigned thousands of dollars with of merchandise and anytime I reach out to customer service with an issue with a purchase they never read my email fully. They don't address my needs or concerns. This latest instance all I needed was a shipping label and invoice so I could mail something back since the systems didn't generate one, it said "oops, something went wrong with the site". It did generate an RMA number so I included that in my request and it's been 4 days and I still don't have it. Evidently YOUR system changes my email on customer service requests to *******@me.com, instead of *******@mac.com. It's all done on the same computer and the representatives don't get it that that's the same thing. I place orders and my email reads as *******@mac.com on the shipping invoice, I get requests for items to consign from Jen Moss to my Mac.com address and receive your daily obsession emails to Mac.com and I can't understand why my email is automatically changed when corresponding with your customer service dept. it's beyond frustrating as I go thru this every time. There been instances where I've been charged 2 shipping fees even though I sent it back in one box and it's such a headache I've stopped asking to be recredited a shipping charge. This latest instance Roberto didn't see my explanation or chose not to do anything and turned me over to someone else who sent me an email saying my return was already on its way back to the company. Oh my word, PLEASE read the email thread. She had looked up the wrong RMA number. I haven't sent back the item I wanted to return so I'm not sure how she thought she could provide me with that I formation. It's exhausting. 4 days and I still don't have what it need. I'm just going to write the RMA number on my original invoice and ship it back myself and hopefully the person opening the box with see it. Please have someone reach out to me and explain why my email gets changed when dealing with customer service, no other dept.

Back in 9/26/2017, I cosigned with TRR for the first time believing they'll be a trust-able site to send all my stuff (28 items including two of my wedding dresses). They process 21 of them and said will send the 7 items that they don't accept back to me in 4-6 weeks.
I waited, till mid November. The tracking number shows up on my account. I follow the tracking and find that the destination address was wrong. I immediately call the customer service and they told me that's there system issue which gives out wrong tracking number as the shipment is actually going back to their warehouse. He told me the items will be send back to me once it arrives to the warehouse.
I waited another two weeks (12/3), nothing happened. I called again, he said it was attempted to the address on the account but no one answer the door. Which I found suspicious since he's unable to provide me the tracking number for the shipment whatsoever. He said he'll remove the signature required and submit the return shipment request for me again.
In the beginning of January 2018, I send an email to the Client relation group regarding my disappointment on their service. She replied me saying the delays are due to the holiday season and she'll provide me a tracking in two days. A week passed, I never heard from her again. No tracking is provided or any emails explaining what happened.
I called the customer service again. The girl told me there's no request ever being made on my account. And she'll submit the request for me again. There's no phone at the warehouse that anyone can call to confirm if my stuff still there. No manager or anyone above her to talk to regarding my issue. Basically there's nothing I can do other than believing her saying 'I will submit a request for you'. There's no request number I can mark down and she wouldn't even provide me her last name.
WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! As how big this company seems like, they're so unorganized and irresponsible to their customers. Think twice before you consign or by anything from them since they might just take your stuff and never give it back to you.

TheRealReal handles post purchase inquiries poorly. Based on other reviews, I don't think they actually care about their customers getting the right package or receiving the package at all.
I ordered a $200 package and paid $12 for 3-5 business day shipping. It has been almost over a month since I placed my order and I have a $200 credit card charge and no package. When I reached out to TheRealReal about the situation, Aela didn't reply to my original inquiry, but did refund my shipping. This is great, but this was simply a bandaid fix on the issue as I still have no idea where my package is. I emailed a second time to follow up on my delivery status, and did not receive any responses for over 48 hours. At this point, I called UPS on my own and launched the investigation on my package status. I specifically asked UPS to loop TheRealReal in any new information and it was only at this point that Jordan reached back out telling me that an investigation had been launched (e.g. They didn't do any work other than to tell me what I had already done). I've expressed my frustration with the customer service team multiple times, but have received little to no response. I feel that TheRealReal do not seem to sympathize or care at all about their customers.
I am still waiting on my package and even if I receive my package (one month later), this was such a headache to figure out on my wown, I will definitely never purchase from TheRealReal again. Getting amazing luxury brand items at a secondhand price is great, but I'd rather work with luxury brands directly because I can trust that they'll take care of the customer.
