Thumbtack generates numerous accounts to send false leads (potential customers) to the "pros." With each generated account, they send one "lead" to five pros. Each pro is charged $30 or more for each "lead," which I have experienced and observed, multiple times, every day I was a member of the platform. Shameful, deceptive and unethical practices. Customer service is poor, nearly non-existent. And, don't expect any refunds...you won't get any.

Cut the grass, pulled weeds, finished with mulch all in 30 min! Did a fantastic job! Thank you Roberto Lopez from Lopez Landscaping and tree Services. *******226
Don't bother working with them! They are useless and using bots and not qualified leads that request a job and want to pay 50 bucks while some projects are minimum $500-750. No customer service total bs and you will lose loads of money on "leads" as they call them but it's just fake accounts that show some sort of activity.
We had a terrible experience with a thumbtack contractor. They didn't show up on time - if at all for scheduled appointments. The workmanship was poor, they made a mess and didn't clean up - didn't finish the job. They wanted the check paid to an individual, not the company listed - very shady. A rating of (1) is generous.

I set up an account with a $100 budget for leads in my area. I blew through the $100 in less than 12 hours by getting leads that were a total waste of my time. People often times are feeling the waters for their project and are not even sure if they are actually going to proceed with their project. That being said I'm being charged for a lead on someone that more than likely isn't even going to do the project they were thinking about. Lots of tire kickers on this site that your billed for their lead. I visited 2 of the leads I was sent, and way under bid the job just to get the work and they still never called me back and have not hired anyone yet. Total waste of my time and money. People think your going to work for $20/hr as a professional. Don't waste your time or money with this site. It's a scam and they are a multi million dollar company bc of taking advantage of average people/ companies trying to make a living.

You will be charged for quotes on jobs that you don't want. They have this cute little button that you can use that says DECLINE buts it's just for looks I suppose. If they deem it a valid quoted job, you are charged regardless of if you read the job request and decide that you had rather not take the job. This is where that decline button comes into play. I started using thumbtack over a year ago and liked it at the start but then they began the instant match. You either use it and get charged regardless of if you think the job will fit you or send each job quote yourself and end up not getting the work because instant match sends them quicker. Totally disgusted by the way I've been treated and will not be using thumbtack anymore.

I'm a local DJ and I used to quote often on Thumbtack. I would perhaps book 1 out of every 12 events I quoted - which was okay. There are many HUGE DJ companies around my area that no doubt would quote on everything.
Now, Thumbtack have introduced a new pricing structure and basically now it costs about 7 credits to quote on any events where the price is $500 or more. It's literally costing a fortune to quote on jobs now and I've stopped quoting completely. It's a shame because I think Thumbtack had the right idea when they started out, but just go too greedy.

This was definitely a marketing mistake. I invested $150.00 and did not make a dime using Thumbtack. First, they can't verify your license. Second, they don't know the limits of the license. They think they are helping you by widening your target area to 100 miles away, but don't realize you can only practice in your home state. After you remove your payment method, they blow up you email with leads you can't use and every time you pass on one, you get a message asking you to put a payment method on the web. Even after you keep passing on those leads, they keep sending them to you. Third, you can spend the necessary time to prepare a lead to work with them, and they stand you up then the communication stops. I'm lucky I didn't wait around on someone that wanted to hurt me.
Tip for consumers:
If there is a limit to how far you can reach, don't use this site.

Hi Brenda, we appreciate you taking the time to leave this detailed feedback. We hear your concerns and want to improve your experience however we can. We're happy to check on the status of your license verification, we understand those delays can be frustrating. If you'd like to reach out to us directly through our social media channels with your account information, we'll locate your account and get you more information about your license status. We do require pros to list a valid payment method with us in order to receive leads. We'd also be happy to look into your preferences, it sounds like you weren't receiving the right leads. We hope to hear from you soon, thank you again for the feedback.
I own a video production business, and 90% of our work comes from Thumbtack.com. What's great about Thumbtack is that you don't need to waste time trying to find work - the work comes to you. Every day I get new leads arriving by email. Thumbtack literally saved my business. I would strongly recommend it to professionals and freelancers everywhere.

I recently had a deck that needed to be painted or stained. I was given advice and 3 different estimates. "People's Painter " arrived. They realized the deck was Mahogany. They proposed the right solution and had the best price. The team is responsive, knowledgeable and great. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to paint\ stain anything outside or inside. You will be pleased!

Adam Gray did a complete renovation of our home in Madison Park, Charlotte, NC. From the time of our first meeting until the work was completed, Adam continued to have our interest and desires for the home foremost on his list. His "can-do" attitude and professionalism was welcomed during each conversation. His work, skill level, and creativeness was a very welcomed commodity. He took a 60 year old home and made it a showcase. No one will ever go wrong by letting Adam and his team do the same to your property. Personally, I will promote his work to all that I know and more. Adam will not be satisfied with his work until it reaches perfection. Don't hesitate to contact him. You will not be sorry.

As a customer looking for a service the initial experience was OK.
Than as it turned out some idiot froze my account. Speaking to their useless customer service yielded zero results. So, im going to stay away and wish you to do the same :)

I was with Thumbtack for 6 years and was very happy with their service as well as the cost. Overnight they went from having a great business model that was beneficial to the vendors that used them to being completely worthless. It is really sad.

I have been trying for 7 MONTHS to get Grout Magic to come repair a grout cleaning job they did in my home. ( I've been told the repair would take about 20 minutes.) I can not get then to return my phone calls, texts, or emails. They guarantee their work. Yeah right, guarantee to frustrate the homeowner is all. Would not use them again! (This review is not about Thumbtack, I hope to use Thumbtack to assist in reviewing this company)

We’re so sorry that this has happened, Laurie. This is not something that we ever want our customers to go through. We have a great Marketplace Integrity team who would love the chance to talk to you and go over these concerns further. Please give us a call at (800) 343-1710 at your earliest convenience.
We look forward to speaking with you!
I am a Thumbtack Pro with a 96% 5 star review average. I found out today with no prior notice that their business model has changed and the cost of a lead for me has gone up so much that it no longer works for me to continue doing business with Thumbtack. I used them for 2 years and felt the leads were priced within reason but this change prices them out of the ball park.

This is a great company for free clients (consumers) but terrible for business owners. They charge for very low quality leads and don't care about customer service. They've created a program that auto responds for clients and they charge businesses even if the client never actually reaches out.
Date of experience: September 21, 2017
I've invested in leads but the sad part is that a customer can receive up to 5 pro quotes and at the end if they just decide to communicate you that they are not interested this alone will cost you the amount Thumbtack charged for the lead. They ask for up to 18 dollars for a wedding lead and you can be out of that money by the client just saying no thanks. Most times you do not get a word and just lose your money. I'm fed up and will disconnect my account for ever.

Ryan of Halcyon LLC repaired my Canon printer. He was excellent. It required a new main board. He was reasonable and very easy to work with. I highly recommend him for repairs, set ups and anything you might need electronic. Very reasonable and reliable. Great Kudos to Ryan!

So you set up your account and wait for leads to come your way, well each lead cost anywhere from $30 - $75 dollars! Just a lead not an actual set confirmed money making opportunity! You pay that price for a potential customer just to ask you a question! Of course, the scam is to send lead to 5 plus pros so Thumbtack can make as much money off the small man's back! I was doing Housecleaning, which is not very lucrative in the first place, maybe $100 - $150 per job give or take. So, if I have to pay $30 for a lead where am I making money! It reminds me of when payday loans hit and the government had to come in and shut them down...I'll be glad about some elected official shuts this pyramid scheme down!

I have been using them for over a year and became one of their top pros. I have been keeping a 5 star rating and top pro for quite some time. But to tell you the truth I'm so tired of throwing money at it. I have been paying more and more for leads and when it comes time to get refunds is trash. They don't care if is a real lead or not. They will tell you on their website that refunds will happen if the person never really replies or cancel the job. When you try to do it there is no refund they just ignore you. Also don't even try to contact customer service, they will take all your money and not even give you that. They will not answer messages or text and really only have an automated system that doesn't do anything really. At this point really considering spending my money somewhere else, this people don't care about their pros at all and it sucks because we are the ones that pay

I worked with Thumbtack for 4 years and was hired more than 400 times with a 4.9 rating out of 5 on 200+ reviews so I know this company very well. One of their poor practices has always been making dramatic changes to their systems without any advanced notice to their network of professionals. Their recent system modification that they call Instant Match allows 10-20 responses to each opportunity is simply a money grab. To make matters worse, they cannot solve even the most simple issue with their system performance. I went from receiving 50-90 opportunities for resume writing to 0 in one week. They claim to care but I find their explanations about this catastrophic drop in business absolutely worthless.
For resume and career coaches out there I would suggest you look at LinkedIn Profinder which limits responses to 5 professionals and provides support that Thumbtack used to in the early years.

I have used Thumbtack for my company for four years. Thumbtack was a great source of clients for us for the first three years. We have gained some long term clients who we still work with today through Thumbtack. However, when they changed their business model, that is when it went downhill. I was fine with paying $3.33 to $5 per bid at a capped amount of bids being 5 people. Now, there are 15 or more bids, no charge to bid, but you get charged random fees for somebody responding (not necessarily even interested in your services). I've been charged $20 and up to $26 before for a question sent to me that I answered and never received a response for. I do believe they are putting in fake bids. I am not the only professional with a complaint. There are literally hundreds of professionals on different sites fed up with Thumbtack's sudden greed and scammy tactics. I am truly disappointed since they were once a good company.

Was a top pro for over 6 years. Hundreds of jobs and Thousands of dollars in profit. So I looked the other way when we saw all the fake leads (probably Botted by Thumbtack) Then they went from 5 pros to 15, Doubled the Price and almost No phone numbers. It has become clear they are now for sure a scam site. I know when It's time to get out. I warn everyone find another lead source. Hopefully someone will investigate these rip off scammers. What a joke

I see these 5 star reviews for pro people have hired on Thumbtack. Yes, there are a ton of talented honesty pros out there. This site is for reviewing Thumbtack as a site. There is no grey area here. Thumbtack has joined the dark side. There is no transparency with there new Instant Match model. They are stealing pros money. Thats all there is to it. They are extremely bold, short sided and wrong for doing this.

Would be great if we could specify size of potential assignment. I'm currently flooded with requests gumming up my mailbox, most of them one or two pages, but will only take much larger scope of work.

Cancelled my account still kept getting emails and charged, shame on this company taking advantages of their customer and no accountability!
Tip for consumers:
No accountability

Once they figure out you are a woman especially single/not married/divorced/widowed they will charge you MORE. They think women have no idea real cost of service or they add on after the fact higher than their hourly rate. Got estimate for $1400 when handyman said they charge $40 hour and I know the job would take no more than 10 hours from start to finish with all materials provided by myself (have had same installed elsewhere 4x). Seriously. So 35 hours billed to do a 8-10 hour job? BEWARE! Best to use a man's name in profile. Do NOT use woman's name in profile or communication. SERIOUSLY! Yep, we still live in a world that this is a huge problem. Hello - it is October 2021.
Tip for consumers:
Do NOT use your real name if you are a woman. Use a man's name. This is so sad to have to share but it is unfortunately true. Find out hourly rate first upfront when communicating. Always use a man's name. Then do your research how long job would take if no complications. That at least puts you on a level playing ground. Check references. Do a google search as well. If they are to be licensed because a trade (electrical, plumbing, roofing, siding, remodel) get license# + verify state.
