Thumbtack generates numerous accounts to send false leads (potential customers) to the "pros." With each generated account, they send one "lead" to five pros. Each pro is charged $30 or more for each "lead," which I have experienced and observed, multiple times, every day I was a member of the platform. Shameful, deceptive and unethical practices. Customer service is poor, nearly non-existent. And, don't expect any refunds...you won't get any.

Cut the grass, pulled weeds, finished with mulch all in 30 min! Did a fantastic job! Thank you Roberto Lopez from Lopez Landscaping and tree Services. *******226
Don't bother working with them! They are useless and using bots and not qualified leads that request a job and want to pay 50 bucks while some projects are minimum $500-750. No customer service total bs and you will lose loads of money on "leads" as they call them but it's just fake accounts that show some sort of activity.
Thumbtack is a waste of money and a rip off. This is coming from someone who used Thumbtack for almost 5 years before deciding to walk away. They charge a pro like myself (I am a DJ) between $15-50 per "lead" when you sign up for their Instant Match service. Most of these "leads" don't respond at all, let alone hire you, but you still get charged for being matched with them. All it leads to is small business owners throwing hundreds of dollars away each week for zero results. Logically, this would lead to small business owners raising their prices - but don't do that, because Thumbtack has no shortage of vendors who low ball the market. $200 to DJ your 6 hour wedding? Sure, no problem! Stuff like that.
Oh, and if you choose not to sign up for Instant Matching? You won't get jobs in yoru area - they will only send you jobs that are 100-150 miles away.
Bottom line: this company got way, way too greedy and started gauging small businesses. Now, it's basically impossible for small businesses to afford their services (not that they care). DO NOT USE THEM.

This used to be a great company, building up their business by having a functional online platform, fair prices and good treatment of professionals, very unusual in their industry and obviously a huge breath of fresh air! After they grew, they very gradually became greedy and corrupt. It is one shady move after another in pursuit of freeloading money from professionals. Prices for their services have increased about 5 times in the last year or so, I don't think we have had even 10% of that of inflation in our ballooning economy. Their latest scam, they change your travel service preferences without your permission so you get many irrelevant and unwanted emails. When you go back in to change everything to your own original preferences, they try to force you to do some promotion thing and essentially get on a auto-subscription set up even if you don't want to. They are going straight down the toilet and I have stopped using them for a while now already. There is no nice way to say it when a company tries to take advantage of its customers in these ways: Greedy, worthless and doomed!

I am precision paint and design in Massachusetts and a Sherwin Williams contractor of 30yrs with non stop consistent 5 star reviews... 2 months ago I notice the agreement I had with thumbtack and a 4 contractor bidding system was fine... now 6 contractors are paying for as low as a 1 bedroom lead for painting,,, 6? You kidding me? After 30yrs and my stats show people stop answering calls from contractors on these sites after 2-4 tops. No one speaks to 6... thumbtack has claimed customers want more contractors and blame them. However this is a straight lie on national stats in marketing for contractors across the board... my 5 star rating when I bid, and then appear for an appointment am usually the stopping point for customers. In other words if they have a couple more estimates set? Normally they say we want you and will cancel those appointments... so the customer is normally satisfied with us so 6 need not be in my universe of leads... none of these want 6 or most even 4 contractors calling or emailing, they get sick of it fast. Anyway I guess and know you don't care about me or any contractors and but for warning other contractors this review is futile to change a thing in the greed of selling the same lead multiple times... another home advisors and worse on 6,, they don't even go that far.

I used thumbtack to find a landscaper. Dunn 2 perfection was good the first year. However at some point, their bookkeeping and communication turned very bad. I sent many emails that informed them they were wrong about me being behind on payment. They would agree and apologize. This happened at least 3 separate times. It got to the point I had to take snapshots of cleared checks and send it to them. Just this June, they abruptly stopped coming to cut our grass. My husband called and he was told they mistakenly thought we were behind. The woman called us back to say they would be out there that day or the next day. It took 3 days for them to show up and we received no call or email explaining why. The day after they cut the grass, I got another invoice saying I had a past due amount. What?! This was just addressed a few days ago on the phone. I promptly emailed and asked which month was in question because I was ready for a response. I had already pulled out all my checkbooks and went online again to take screenshots. I got no response. I sent that email over July 1st (7 days ago). I will send payment for one month of service and be done. Maybe I'll get a reply when they see the check is less than the invoice. That's all I ever wanted--a reply. Poor communication and questionable billing.

Won't be using thumbtack again. Had a patio poured with cover only to find out after the fact that the contractor isn't licensed. Used cheap material and wouldn't use again.

I wish there was zero stars as a rating!
This is a scam! I hired a handyman to put locks on two doors. He showed up 2 hours late because his wife made him breakfast? Then when he got to our home he did not have the right tools to install the dead bolts so took another hour away to go to the hardware for tools? A job that should have started at 9am for an hour on a Sunday took all day!
Then I tried thumbtack again for pressure washing our home. I received a text response from a contractor at 12:16 a.m. which I did not see till the next morning. He told me I costed him to loose $11.00 and not to waste his time? I had no idea what he was talking about... he later texted me that he was made that I requested multiple bids for the work and flipped me off with a emoji! Who does this?
I requested quotes on lawn mowing and without even looking at our yard in person was quoted $ 80, $50, $40, but none of these people could outline what they would do for these dollar amounts? The area to mow is under 600 ft. The $50 quote was from a contractor who advertises under 1000 ft. Mowing, trimming. Edging and weed eating for $25? Then I call thumbtack to make them aware and the guy who answered my call took my complaint as a personal attack and hung up on me. Their calls are recorded but when I called back to speak to management, I was left on hold for 25 minutes, so hung up and wrote this. Thumbtack can't be legit. Ever contractor I have had any contact with has been as flake trying to get your credit card number on text messages? Who does this?
Tip for consumers:
Call hardware stores, big box hardwares for their reference lists of legit contracts for all jobs around the house !

Right for people crappy for contractors they charge $300 deposit plus they charge you to bid plus they want a percentage of the job by the time it's all done I have to charge the customer eight times what I usually charge than if they just called me on my cell phone for a job because I have to pay them to get it it's not worth it and if you don't get the job you still have to pay them I hope they go under and never open another page it's not worth my time

Thumbtack was great at first it was simple and ro the point with decent quote prices. But like everyone else that has a good thing going I'm sure they dragged in a bunch of empty suits with "fresh ideas " and ran it into the destructive course I'm about to lay out. Basically the old system was pay to quote this job but they charged a little to much so I'm sure they had a lot of refund requests. So instead of charging less and not having to refund everything they literally tripled the prices on what they called "direct quotes" and entrapped you by sending you only requests from hundreds of miles away. This way you would pay for the bull$#*! more expensive requests. Anybody could see the scam there but the best part was when they upgraded my service and started charging my credit card for leads I didn't know I was getting because I stopped using their crooked service regularly. I would like to give them 0 stars I got my money when I complained to my bank because they wouldn't refund me. If any anyone reading this is in a business like thumbtack open the flood gates to succeed and charge no more than 10 dollars for a lead because most are tire kickers and craftsman don't like dumping money into an ocean of online deception

Fraudulent charges for leads that do not meet my job description. I was recently charged for 3 separate service requests that were labeled as financial planning, which is the service I provide. I responded to leads that were labeled as such. When the leads contacted me to begin service, they each individually described their needed service to be something other than financial planning, such as tax planning, and business planning, which I do not provide. When contacting Thumbtack about this, they said that since I sought out these jobs in their opportunities section, they are not responsible for the job, and I pay for the lead no matter what. This basically means... if someone advertises for financial planning, and it turns out they need a roof leak fixed, I am responsible for paying for the lead even though it was falsely advertised. The definition of fraud is wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain. This definition fits what Thumbtack is practicing in.

You see Thumbtack reviews by pros, we all dislike them.
I have been in business for more than 25 years, I know my client base. Customers that send requests through thumbtack choose the cheapest quote 9 times out of 10, then you see them complaining about the service. Well you get what you pay for. Only low quality pros bother with Thumbtack because it SUCKS! Leads are expensive, and people are cheap.
Stop whining about getting low quality service if you think the cheapest bid is the best! Thumbtack is too easily manipulated. They will get exactly $0 of my money. I know my customer base very well, and when people talk to me they know i come with experience and credentials. On Thumbtack it doesn't matter. I would love to say I feel sympathy for Thumbtack users, but I really dont. It seems to draw in low quality leads, and a lot of fakes. Why would any smart business owner spend good money after bad?
See the screen shot? Out of 10 leads paid for only 1 person hired for a measley $150 job. 6 of them never even responded, the other 3 just picked the cheapest bid possible. Thats over $200 in leads for a big waste of time.
Thumbtack tried to bring me back onboard with them as I was a top pro with 150 plus 5 star reviews, they were once a great platform but over time it turned to garbage, They gave me $300 in free credit to try. I have to say its even worse than I remember. PRO's, dont waste your time or money!
Tip for consumers:
Avoid!

Thank you for taking the time to share this honest feedback as a business owner. We're sorry to hear that you feel this way about the platform, but we understand it might not work for everyone. To address some of the concerns you mentioned, it's important to us that we provide resources and tools for a variety of business to showcase their experience, expertise, credentials, reviews, and previous work. We also have a team dedicated to helping customers resolve project issues when things don't go as planned. We appreciate all reviews so that we can work to improve and also get in touch with users if they need additional support.
BEWARE my experience with a Thumbtack referral has been a total nightmare. The "professional" they referred cost me $620. In losses commuting multiple illegal actions. He appears to be unstable and possibly dangerous. None of the claims made by their "professionals" in their profiles are verified by Thumbtack. Their definition of a "professional" to Thumbtack is anyone who wil pay their fees, no questions asked. When costumer service reps. Are contacted they have no authority to do anything other than offering patronizing empathy and offer to mediate between victim's and their victimizing "professional". No one will respond to my questions. No one at the company deputies my accusations or attempts to defend their clients obvious indisputable illegal actions. The " professional " stole my money and refuses to reimburse me. Considering their " professional " claimed to be a LLC and a trained mechanical engineer on his Thumbtack profile it was a surprise to learn he lives in a camping trailer at a local county park campground. The California secretary of state has no listing of the claimed LLC in their database. I'm certain this "professional" doesn't have the money to refund and may be violent if angered. I had a reasonable expectation that "hire with confidence" as Thumbtack promotes would be more than promotional empty lies.

My company uses Thumbtack frequently to find handymen for jobs in our area and they've been pretty good up until today. My coworker is typically the one who posts the jobs but last night I posted one and this morning, I realized I inputted the wrong zip code for job location. I updated that information and no more than 5 minutes later I tried to view my account and it said it was disabled. I contacted Thumbtack and this was their response: "we have found links between your account and other accounts that was removed from Thumbtack. Please understand that the decision to remove your account from our platform is final, and cannot be circumvented through the creation of connected accounts." I asked for clarification because I'd never created an account before last night and this was their response: "Since we found links on your account that is not in line with how Thumbtack is intended to be used, and for those reasons we won't be able to reinstate the account. We can't provide any more information due to our privacy policy."
What does that even mean? How can you ban my account but not give any clarification? Such a shame. I'll never recommend them to anyone ever again.

I should have known. I read through the reviews before signing up, but we were urged by a "mentor" at the time to do it anyway. Thumbtack will charge you A LOT for horrible leads. You will pay dearly for people who are tire-kickers, extreme low-ballers, have ridiculously high expectations, and even for those who admit they changed their mind on the project at all. (Yes, I have written proof). It doesn't even matter if you set your calendar to "unavailable", they will still charge you for leads that come through, but here's the kicker -- you will only get "Thumbtack credit" for the theft. Apparently, it is against their policy to actually refund money that they take from you for any reason. It just hangs out within Thumbtack forever. (Yes, I have proof of this too). Oh, and here's another huge red flag (as if you need any more, right?). Leads started to dwindle down to maybe one lead per week. Within 30 minutes of setting my calendar to unavailable, I literally got bombarded with leads. HUGE red flag for me!
Do yourself a favor and find another way. ANY other way. Thumbtack will only lead you to financial ruin.
Tip for consumers:
If you are on Thumbtack as a customer looking for a Pro, PLEASE be aware that we all pay just to have a slim chance to be considered for your job. We pay regardless of getting hired, interest, or even being qualified for it. IF, for some stupid reason, you still want to look for Pros' through Thumbtack, PLEASE make sure you are serious about hiring someone there. We ALL have to pay regardless of your decision to hire. They make a killing off of us Pros just because of people's curiosity.

THUMBTACK use to be a perfect tool for my business but they have changed recently. I use to receive 4 to 8 quote requests a day from potential customers and now I don't receive any. The only job notifications I get now are from out of state. I work the Baltimore area and I only see requests from Pa, Va, De, NJ and DC now. This is because I removed my profile specifics in which allowed THUMBTACK to automatically charge me for quotes even if I did not respond to the quote request. In short, because I opted out of the auto charge plan, they are penalizing me by showing jobs only from other states.

I hired a Wright Lawn Care a couple months ago. The service on the first day was ok, or so I thought. Additional work and follow-up was required to complete the work that was already paid for. Since the initial service Ive attempted multiple times to reach Lamont the owner and on every occasion he promised to come back to complete the services that was paid for. Lamont is quick to take a new account and take your money but be sure to triple check everything he did for you before you PAY HIM. If you have follow-up care that's needed based on the incomplete work he performed, you will never ever see him again once he has your money.
BE WARY OF HIS WORK. TERRIBLY DISSATISFIED AND HAD TO HIRE SOMEONE ELSE TO REPAIR WHAT HE WAS PD. TO DO BUT NEVER COMPLETED!
