I did use thumbtack for quite a few projects and then I posted for a handy man to hang some shelves, medicine cabinet and hookup a dishwasher. I spoke with one contractor and arranged a day and time. I did provide with a family members number since they may have gotten there before me and asked about methods of payment. Then shortly before the appointment I receive a notice saying that due to my handyman post my service was deactivated. When I checked my account was deactivated. I did respond asking for clarification and well demanding a reason or how I violated terms of use….all I received was "your account was deactivated due to violations of terms of use and will not be reconsidered." So I do NOT recommend Thumbtack. You cannot count on them to be professional or protect the consumer. Clearly they do not have our backs.
This is the most awful site to deal with. I had a client that gave me an issue as soon as i went in and her dog bit me. It was a painting project and she did not get primer and she was upset the darker color was soaking through. She contacted thumbtack and they wanted me to give her a refund and i refused due to her failing to provide correct paints. The pros pay for the leads. But they side with customers when it comes down to it home advisor or Angie's list is the best advertising sites.
They told me I could join and get leads I paid $200 I didn't get anything I tried to cancel nobody would have call me back in the time frame 10 days. I did not get one single lead in 1 month the guy that I joined from told me I was going to get leads his name is Chris this is the worst legioneration platform I've ever used in my life
've been a client for 4 years on Thumbtack. This page is great page to find new customers. But since a few months some of their leads start to fake like some of their competitors. Ad their refund policy have changed. They don't refund you anymore for these fake leads.
I really wanted to like the service. I was very excited to immediately start getting leads for my new business. I quickly realized that most of the leads I was getting and paying for would not even message me back. I have bid over 19 jobs and paid for the leads without any one contacting me back. I have a feeling that this company is using our bots as fake profiles to pretend to be people looking for leads. Super disappointing.
I have hired many contractors off Thumbtack for small jobs and was so pleased, I searched for a bath remodel contractor through Thumbtack. A COMPLETE DISASTER! The "5 star" company was a nightmare. Had to fire them and hire legit contractors to complete the work. Lost thousands of dollars. When asked if they vetted this pro…short answer is NO. "Pros" pay Thumbtack so they really don't care who is on their site. They don't make sure they are licensed. Their "mediation service" is non existent …. Like getting your toddler to ask the contractor to give your money back. Pathetic. Don't use this service for major work. Ask a friend. Ask your neighbor. DO NOT ASK THUMBTACK.
Although I wasn't taking damage in the app, I was enjoying it. Until I went to the app and said that my account was deleted. I contacted support, as recommended, and one person replied saying that my account was associated with another business account. The answer is very shallow, they don't say the exact reason. Who could I be associated with if I don't know anyone here in this country. Now I'm the one who doesn't want to go back. You can even pay me, I don't want to
Your company is a vile disgusting con! You promise homeowners a guarantee if contractors screws up yet when your hold to it with numerous photos emails and documentation of damage neglect and robbery from some of your contractors you dissappear and hide. SHAME ON YOU! Look at your BBB review your a zero you have failed as a company! You are liars and theives. Thumtack owner you suck you major loser!
Do not use this to expand your business if you are a small business owner.
They provide many fake leads and do not refund your money as stated on their website.
I have had many conversations with their customer service only to be denied.
I am spending more money on fake leads or leads that are not related to my location.
Be Wary! Do not use and make the same mistake I did.
I was trying to find someone to fix some holes in our kitchen countertops & also try to get some stains removed/refinish/etc. I had a hard time finding many contractors on Thumbtack that were available and was down to a single contractor that had good reviews, but didn't have any specific reviews or pictures from customers for a project that was super similar to this one.
Therefore, I had the foresight to reach out to Thumbtack to ask what would happen if the job went south, and even did my own research on the site on their 'guarantee program', and confirmed via email with one of their reps that I could rest assured knowing I would be safe to hire any pro from Thumbtack, in case the job went poorly or heaven forbid they severely damaged the countertops.
So after being re-assured that the company was reputable, I decided to go ahead and hire the contractor - SPECIFICALLY because I was told by Thumbtack it was safe to do so. TOO BAD THAT WAS A BOLD-FACED LIE!
The contractor did in fact destroy the countertops! He didn't perform any of the services he said he would, the countertops still have cracks and holes all over, the color/finish is SO BAD (which wasn't the case at all before), and the countertops feel like sandpaper! Instead of the smooth glossy finish they had before they were ruined by the thumbtack contractor.
So I naturally tried keeping my calm and reaching out to Thumbtack. I spoke with a friendly rep who (yet again!) assured me they could and would help remedy the awful situation. I sent tons of pics/videos of the before/after countertops. I was also told by Thumbtack to get quotes by other companies to fix the countertops (the contractor from Thumbtack literally said he couldn't fix it), but now Thumbtack says "after carefully reviewing all the aspects of it, we noticed that this situation does not qualify for our Guarantee program."
Thumbtack IS AN ABSOLUTE SCAM. The "Pros" are nothing of the sort. DO NOT USE, YOU WILL REGRET EVERYTHING!
The worst platform ever! Horrible, money hungry machine. Do not use as a contractor or consumer. The will suck you dry of all cash!
I put my limit at 40 bucks for leads, and over night they took 200 bucks! For customer service all they got is a damn robot text. If you want too get robbed theyre the best
I have attempted to use Thumbtack to acquire students for my voice teaching studio. Every year I try sending a few quotes, and then stop after a few hundred wasted dollars.
Here's the crux of the issue; the leads are very low quality. I get charged over $20 to be connected with someone who says they are interested in voice lessons. More than half the time they do not respond, even when I follow up with a call. Often, the person is merely tire-kicking, or has some other agenda. Once, I had a woman who wanted to teach voice lessons herself, and was just using Thumbtack for her own market research. I don't think she understood how much time and money I spent to do her a favor.
They sometimes refund these poor quality leads, but admonish you, stating that you are paying for the *opportunity* to match up with new clients.
Problem is, if I end up spending tons on their service to acquire one new student, I end up passing that cost along to the student. Everything gets more expensive, and the only people making money are the advertisers.
Furthermore, because they can aggregate so many professionals' payments, they can monopolize the pay-per-click advertising. Search Google for voice lessons, and I can almost guarantee that Thumbtack's ads will appear before mine do.
Most recently, they made a few updates to their policies. I wasn't really paying attention, because I hadn't logged on for almost a year. Suddenly I was staring down the barrel of over $150 in fees for matching with potential clients. Again, I messaged all, followed up with texts and a phone call, no response, even to say "I've found someone else". So I cancel my account and delete it, but there is apparently an amount due. Ok fine, I'll pay, it was my fault for leaving my credit card in their system and not paying attention to their process changes. But I refuse to log in ever again. You can't reply to the automated emails, they get bounced back. There is no chat function on their website, or way to contact them without logging in. It wasn't much better as a user, either.
This company grossly overcharges and under-delivers
Thumbtack introduced me some contractors to do the exterior painting on my house. The contractors promised to finish the job in 1 week. I paid them 100% of payment they asked for. They did not show up. I waited for four weeks till I cancelled the order and asked for a refund. The contractors disappeared and refused to refund me. I contacted the construction contractors board (CCB). The CCB told me the contractors had no license to operate. I contacted Thumbtack. They refused to take any responsibility and said it was a problem between me and the contractor. Thumbtack is full of scams and corrupts. AVOID THEM.
Scam website charged me 200$ for nothing, if you want to be ripped off get deal with this scam marketplace
I used thumbtack for less than a week and it drained me of $200 for "leads" as a company. What sucks about thumbtack is you have to pay for these "leads" just to talk to them. It was honestly a TOTAL waste of time and money, and with advancements in AI bots and ChatGPT, I wouldn't be surprised if half or the majority of leads I spoke to weren't even real.
Basically they are charging you, filling their pockets with your money and providing a poor a super weak field in which you might find some customers. Their customer support is just terrible. For instance the app had a bug a few days ago, They sent me a lead which cost 40$ and the bug wouldn't let me send any messages to the customer. AFTER 1 HOUR someone answered me on their customer support platform and confirmed it was a bug but said they only could give me the customer's number, When I called the customer they said the app didn't really let them book me so they've hired someone else. NOW COMES THE INTERESTING PART! I reported this lead for a refund to which Thumbtack replied: we're sorry it looks like this lead is not eligible for a refund! WHAT IS THIS? AN HONEST BUSINESS? I DON'T THINK SO
I signed up for Thumbtack hoping to generate some leads for my travel agency. Set the lowest weekly budget I could just to test it out. I had read that leads were typically about $6 each, which I was comfortable with as a test. The account goes live, and shortly after I get a lead that cost me $31. Call the number within 10 minutes, get voice mail with no name. I realize this is a scam, so I cancel my account in a panic. Just before I could cancel, I get another lead that cost me $29. The account was closed by then, so I didn't even get to see the lead information. Once you close the account, you have ZERO ability to contact Thumbtack or dispute a lead charge. So I filed chargebacks on the two leads and ultimately lost. I am out $60 for a bogus lead and another one I never even saw. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY, it is a total scam! I wish I had read the review before trying it out, I just never dreamed that leads would be so expensive and come so quickly -- easy to do when they are completely fake.
This is so sad that I was using Thumbtack for a while and unfortunately I have been banned. No one could explain why they did so. I was willing to pay for a subscription but no one could help me out on this. I really don't know how are you going to keep your business like this.
I called Ryan and asked for a quote and basically he didn't give me one on the phone, basically said he will give it to you when he gets here. Needless to say Ryan was supposed show up Thursday and he didn't he said he could come on the Saturday because I told him I already had the garbage disposal fixed, it was just an Allen key needed to turn the blades. So we talked on the phone and he decided he was gonna come on Saturday between 1 PM and 1:30 PM. It is now 3 PM and he still hasn't shown. I'm sure he's not showing at this point. I have nothing good to say about his work, and I have nothing bad to say about his work because he never showed up for me to review it but that should tell you a lot about the person doing the work. Ryan The Handyman from Thumbtack!
Answer: Thumbtack does not generate fake requests. When our professionals come to Thumbtack to meet new customers, we know how important it is to receive requests that can help them expand their clientele. We have a lot of customers that come to Thumbtack and hire professionals to help them complete their personal projects. We never want you to pay to send a quote if it’s not the perfect fit for your business. This is why you can view the details of each request before you send a quote and introduce yourself to the customer. James - I’m so sorry that the concerns you’ve brought to our attention haven’t been responded to in an appropriate amount of time, this is never our intention. Answer: Hi Kay, I’d be happy to answer your questions. When we initially started Thumbtack in 2009, we tried multiple business models. This included a commission based model, but there were some concerns. When professionals didn’t pay for each quote they sent out, there was nothing to stop pros from quoting as much as possible, regardless of if they were the right fit for the job. Paying for each quote encourages better quality quotes and creates a much better experience for customers. Like you mentioned, it’s important for us to get customers to try our site and continue to hire professionals. In the end, pros are paying to promote and advertise themselves to customers that are already actively looking for that particular service. S. G has an amazing point, and Thumbtack is a great introduction site. There’s a lot of potential to expand your clientele, but sometimes it takes some tweaking to your profile and quotes to increase your response rate. The goal is to create a connection through your profile and quote message, and we’re here to help you do this. It’s kind of like sending the customer a virtual portfolio of your experience, achievements, and reviews. I do want to clarify that Thumbtack does not create fake requests, and it goes against everything we value as a company. While Thumbtack may not be the perfect fit for every business, we strongly believe that we can help connect businesses with new customers and foster growth. If you’d like to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we’d love to give you more personalized help or answer any other concerns you may have.
Answer: We love to see that you’re interested in joining Thumbtack, Grace! Your party planning business sounds like it will be a blast. When it comes to having a license, it's up to each professional to determine what licenses are necessary and follow their local, state and federal laws. I recommend checking with your state to see if a business license is needed for your service. Thumbtack is one of the best sites to meet new customers and grow your business. Robert S. Gave a really good explanation of how we work. You can sign up and receive requests for free, and you only pay us when you send the customer a quote. Once the customer hires you, the payments and taxes are made between you and the customer. This is a great way to connect with the customer and build an extensive referral network. We wish you the best of luck with growing your business. Have an amazing day!
Answer: The reason you had a lull in leads we because thumbtack had a manual action penalty levied against them. If you are not sure what that is you should google search it. The letter you received from Thumbtack regarding this was (as usual) not fully truthful. The letter does not detail the slimy tactics thumbtack used ti enhance google rankings in organic search returns. Do yourself a favor and search this phrase "thumbtack manual action penalty"
Answer: With our recent changes, you're only charged when a customer responds to your quote with interest in working with you. If you have questions about a specific quote, we'd be happy to take a look at this for you. Just send us a message on Facebook with your email address and the customer's name.
