“Good service on lots of topics”

James G.
6/2/24

Cd can be a "go to source" on a lot of matters. If I have questions about a particular food or brand, I can find it here. Obviously comment will be somebody's opinion. The politics can get a bit edgy, but in general that is fun.

“Right Wing Echo Chamber”

sitereviewguy j.

This place is a joke. A right Wing Echo Chamber of nonsense. As someone who doesn't lean far left or far right, it's comical the amount of right wing echoing that goes on there. Just boring conversation really as right wing conservatives just echo each other non-stop in the political forum.

I just checked myself out of the C-D asylum, too many trolls and idiots and biased mods that condone their behavior. After I was banned for "unknown" reasons and my posts were edited, it robbed me of enjoying the art of debate and compassionate conversation. Too bad, there is some occasional intelligent and empathetic conversations, I did enjoy it for a few years. Not any more, I'll leave it to the inmates to run the show.

Not worth the aggravation

City-Data has a lot of helpful, thoughtful, regular posters, (I'll give them 2 stars for that) but they have a whole lot more a-holes. No matter what the subject, all too many times the conversation devolves into a political argument, it's tiring. When politics isn't enough to satisfy their blood lust, they'll go after other posters with insults or outrageous name calling or just plain stupid statements (of course saying something like this will get you kicked off C-D). I didn't see as much of a problem with moderators, I got flagged several times when going to battle with one of the town idiots, I guess they try, but if they kicked off everyone posting idiocy, there wouldn't be any left. If you were to believe much of what you read on there, and some of the extremist views, you'd be afraid to go out your door in the morning. I think, and I hope, it's just keyboard warriors taking advantage of their anonymity. If you want pleasant conversation, call a friend, but definitely stay away from C-D.

Some of the forum posters are great (especially for my state). But prepare for a trip into 1984 if you use C-D. Moderators are psycho sometimes. It just oozes out of them. If you think outside the box a tiny bit, you get in trouble. It's really sick. I hear people complain about its racist mere rates, and while I haven't personally seen that, I don't doubt that its true... I have seen what jerks they are. Do not think they are all conservatives, though: I am conservative and they hammer me, for nonsensical reasons. Honestly, it's all just about the power trip. (The statistical section seems so-so. I rarely use it).

I am so hurt by these negative reviews! City Data is my whole life. I am a mod. I spend all day looking up posts, deleting anything that's I don't like, and banning users. Now you guys are trying to get me fired from my job. It will ruin my power trip. I feel so important when I can delete posts and ban users. Try a little kindness, it goes a long way.

It is rather pointless to post at the City-Data forums, since you risk to be insulted by its moderators, and subsequently permanently banned. The usual reason for banning they give is "troll"; this is the reaction if you offer criticism of a certain city or country.

Before you use City Data do your background research on the owner. It's easy enough to google his name and read up on him and his previous "businesses." He clearly has ulterior motives for gathering data on users and discussions. Be careful about what you share about yourself on this site.

Second everything said below about the site's leanings towards extreme right wing propaganda is true. City Data is not what it appears to be on the surface. Again, do your research on the site's owner and if you feel you absolutely *must* join, do so with extreme caution, even if it seems like a place full of people "just like me."

This site needs to check its moderators. It seems like they'll give anyone the job. The amount of anti-Black, anti-Hispanic, anti-Muslim, anti-Atheist, homophobic drivel on this site is shocking. People will spew their Christianity-sanctioned hate-speech, and anyone that questions it is banned. What a joke.

Garbage moderators. Got banned for "trolling" when I was merely stating my perspective (that didn't necessarily align with theirs)... which is NOT what trolling is at all.

From what I can tell, it's an aging demographic that doesn't want their negative opinions about modern offerings challenged. Was under the idea that the forum was for everyone. Not so.

Suppose to be a site to provide advice on different regions and various other topics. FAR FROM IT. Its basically a bunch adults behaving like pre-teens on a chat room. Florida and California Forums highlight this perfectly. Dont waste your time.

Tip for consumers:
Dont waste your time looking for legitimate advice. Its an expanded chatroom for the immature.

The moderator on the NM and Santa Fe forums has little tolerance for posts that bash the city or anything about it. You can get in trouble for warning people about crime, depressed wages, the local hospital, anything. That's true on quite a few of the city and state forums, actually. Real estate agents who are long-term members have a lot of influence, so many of the city/state sub-forums are set up to boost the region, to support the RE industry. The moderators back that up.

If you want serious truthful answers to your questions, you really need to ask family, friends and/or do your own research. This place is fine for those who are shut-ins and for those who don't have a life (like the older retired 'moderators'), but if you're spending time on C-D, you need to get a life. I go back every so often, mostly for fun, and then wonder why I wasted my time.

I would definitely not bother using City-Data. The minute any of the 30+ year regulars get upset with you, they ask the moderators to ban you, which they do! Go on there only to waste time, and to ask questions such as, "Is (name of city) a nice place?" Do not enter any of the other threads unless you plan to be completely boring and dull. You will end up eventually surprised by a lifetime ban because the older members got upset with you. The liberals (fond of whining) like to say that they get banned from everywhere, but the fact is that City-Data is a place where a small group have been online for a long time, and dominate the place. Go elsewhere.

Don't expect honest advice about a city or neighborhood. The members are extremists who have some sort of agenda. I get the impression that it's people who want to live in some sort of right wing theocracy, aka Handmaid's Tale. Rural Alabama and Mississippi are heaven on earth while NYC, Seattle, and Chicago are hell on earth. It's Trump Central. Take the comments with a grain of salt.

I signed up last week, and made 4 posts (all in one thread, and all on topic, which was Trump speech on Labor Day) and in one of them I called Trump a 'whiner', and was immediately banned for life. Reason = Trolling. Reading some other posters with thousands of posts, they are getting way with all kinds nastiness, but I guess that's ok because its in line with the overall bias of the board. Looks like its a place for Trump fans to go and vent out their anger.

I am extremely confused by some reviewers saying that City Data is right-wing biased. I have never seen that, and my experiences have been the exact opposite. I have been banned, permanently I might add, because I posted facts about what legalizing recreational marijuana, and what illegal immigration, has done to my home state Colorado. Because these facts destroyed the pro-stoner and pro-illegal utopian types I was banned. Meanwhile there were leftist members breaking pretty much every rule on that site, including harassment and even death threats, and not a damn thing was being done about them. Every time I was banned it was by a leftist moderator. I have been banned 3 times now, i mistakenly decided to go with the 3 strikes motto, and every time I was accused of trolling just for stating actual facts and a different opinion. If you say anything, and I mean anything that goes against the far lefts views or opinions you will be accused of trolling and then permanently banned.

If you're planning on moving to a different state city this site is pretty good there are of course thousands of people on the site and they will help you right and left.

There's work, psychology, personal experiences and non romantic problems stuff like that general things once you get into the politics well some people say it's right wing some people say it's left wing some people say the moderators are too heavy-handed some say they're not heavy-handed enough.

This is also really good is that you can direct mail a message to posters asking questions and probably I'd say 95% of them happily respond with good information and helpful suggestions.

The rest are mean nasty cranky and ignorant...

I've been banned from City Data because the mods are realtors and didn't like me saying, "There's a terrible brown smog cloud that hangs over Denver that gives me asthma." They said I was trolling and banned me. Ridiculous censorship.

If you post anything that goes against the majority, your post will be deleted with no explanation. Some think the site is conservative but if you go to the California threads, you'll see that liberals run that show and if you post a comment disagreeing with them, they'll report it and *poof* it's gone. Then, everyone thinks the state is nothing but liberals but it's not true. Been there a long time but leaving soon due to censoring conservative viewpoints. Just a bunch of idiots on there now.

I have read some views down below. They can trace http address so when you get banned and make up a new user just use a different internet browser it took a day or 2 to find my http addy.

I posted a thread with facts and then all of s sudden they banned me for trolling. I only had 1 post and responded to other people's threads. Ih and i was attacked for grammar.

All i did was post a thread where they have Muslim training camps in America. Plenty of evidence on google and YouTube and i was banned.

Great site if you are looking to relocate or keep up with the current events and building projects in your area. However, it all depends on the users of your particular board and how well it is moderated. Luckily my local board has a great group of people and moderator.

City data forum is basically just a bunch of middle aged White rural conservatives who hate big cities and everything they represent, diversity, liberal policies, nightlife, dense neighborhoods, etc. Doesn't matter what city forum you go to, whether it's San Francisco, NYC, Chicago, the members post the same garbage, that city living sucks and paradise is in rural red states. Ok, then why the hell are they posting day in and day out on city forums they hate?

The vast majority of discussions are about race and ethnicity. People basically ask if a certain neighborhood has a certain number of minorities living in it before they take the plunge. Any area that has less than 80% WASP is deemed ghetto and trash. Majority of the threads and discussions devolve into trashing Blacks, Hispanics, immigrants, and occasionally Asians, Jews and Hipsters. Skip it, it's like going on a White Supremacist website

All i did was say that trans rights in my country were under attack and i made a joke about beer that wasnt even right or left leaning and i got banned for being a "troll" permanently. No option to contact mods that doesnt show the same "you have been banned for the following reason" message. I tried emailing the site about my ban and got no response. I have no clue why this is the case, considering its a pretty conservative place and they claim to care a lot about "free speech". According to a lot of reviews here its full of racists as well so maybe my ban was for the best

This message board is weirdly moderated. They have banned me multiple times over the years and I am unsure why because the ban just says I am a troll banned forever, but what exactly did I do wrong? It is a very strangely managed message board that I wanted to participate on but they just ban me and say I am a troll. Why though? Odd forum. I signed up a few times over a few different years from different computers and I read their rules as well. Others here say they only ban Liberals but that is untrue in my case. Therefore I will just stay away from City Data where I must be unwanted forever by a moderator hiding there calling me a troll...

Moderators are neo nazi sympathizers and will ban you for calling out blatant racists. Forum is a hub for white nationalist recruitment. Other Moderators are senior citizens who have no job so they over moderate and will ban you for correcting anybody. This is one of the most negative, covert racist forums on the internet.

For years I thought City-Data was a good reference website to find out information about different cities. But then I discovered the information is unreliable. For example, a city whose actual population is more than 600,000, with a metro area of between one and two million, is shown in City-Data as having a population of less than 300,000. And a lot of City-Data's information is too many years out of date.

Don't post in their forums. Parts of the information you post will often get deleted without notice, leaving other parts out of context, making you seem stupid and silly, and you might never even notice it.

I would like to know the best website for information about cities. I hope it's infinitely better than City-Data.
