Cd can be a "go to source" on a lot of matters. If I have questions about a particular food or brand, I can find it here. Obviously comment will be somebody's opinion. The politics can get a bit edgy, but in general that is fun.
This place is a joke. A right Wing Echo Chamber of nonsense. As someone who doesn't lean far left or far right, it's comical the amount of right wing echoing that goes on there. Just boring conversation really as right wing conservatives just echo each other non-stop in the political forum.
It's been mentioned that the Moderator (moderating, indeed.) Ibginnie (may be a male using a female name), is troublesome, habitually deleting perfectly innocuous posts while leaving posts with truly hateful remarks untouched. It's not understood the rationale of doing this, so it just means the so-called Mod is showing favoritism to their cronies. I didn't even know what was going on at first, feeling like being in the Twilight Zone.
Otherwise, the site can be enjoyable with many topics and some posters being knowledgeable and humorous, enjoying the interaction with, yet as said, others can make things unpleasant, those who this mod appears to side with. It would be nice to visit a site like this run by rational, impartial adults instead, which all the "normal posters" would be able to enjoy.
Very poorly moderated; moderators are ignorant of science. It's the only message board I ever posted on that didn't require the person making a claim to prove their claim if asked. Mods think everything is a "discussion" including scientifically validated (or invalidated) information.
Has lofty TOS but mods themselves don't follow them in posting to members, e.g. make personal attacks on members. Also very erratic enforcement and much favoritism.
No one should advertise on this board; do not give them the income.
Tip for consumers:
Don't!
Reviewers pointed out, the white supremacist problem. Another one, is that you can't criticize big pharma, dentistry, science taught in schools and universities etc. (You get ridiculed, if you do).
But, the white supremacism tends to go with narrow-mindedness or anti-visionary mindset. Racists have low intelligence and massive egos. Narcissism.
Increasingly, over the years, political and racial stuff has crept into forums, of websites that weren't made for it. Politics and racism, are two of the most toxic, distracting, time-wasting things, to the human mind.
If I could give this site a negative rating I would. Do not venture into the politics forum unless you are a rabid Trump supporter or ibginnie will make your life a living hell. I received a 90 day infraction for asking a Trump supporter to back up his claims with facts. I was deemed "rude" and put in the corner for three months as a result. Meanwhile, the posts calling me a "libtard" and $#*!ed for being a Democrat are still up on the site and that poster starts 5 to 10 threads a day using such derogatory language against anyone who disagrees with Trump without any fear of reprisal. It's too bad, because there are some intelligent people on that forum who are looking for good political discussion, but that is not allowed by ibginnie. Only Trump sycophants are allowed to speak freely there. CD's P&OC has become ibginnie's personal cesspool.
These reviews are totally fabricated, obviously made by abusers, bullies and trolls. City-Data is an informative site and also has a very large forum where you can discuss practically anything. I've been a member for many years since almost it's inception. Yes I have been chastised and even banned one time but that was on me. I was behaving badly. Stop being a bunch of whiney babies and enjoy the site for what it is, informative and social. It's what you make it, I just avoid trolls and subject matters that get heated, it's very enjoyable that way. It's not right wing, racist or anything like that, they just have certain rules to be followed and if they aren't you'll receive warnings and/or infractions. If you behave yourself there's not a damn problem.
The moderaters banned me for signing up and giving an unfavorable opinion in one of my posts. The guy named "YAC' i guess has been around for almost two decades taking his anger for never getting laid out on people on this forum. It is more sad and pathetic than anything else. One Star!
... especially those that don't march in lockstep to Liberals ideas. I find the moderators are quick to let posters derail any topic that pin Liberals in a corner and exposes non-rational responses. In particular, any reasonable talk about illegal immigration (just contrary to a Liberal viewpoint) will almost assuredly result in a ban. It could be a good site if an open dialogue was allowed. But they're not interested in a civil conversation and pretty much encourage any $#*!fest that supports Liberal viewpoints. If you do get banned, simply use another IP address and you'll be fine. But honestly, why waste the time. They don't encourage honest, open conversation so you would be better off finding another forum.
It's unfortunate. I joined city-data to check on some potential states to consider moving to. I didn't find them particularly helpful but it was interesting.
As the seditious conspiracy continues in this country, I was attempting to post the truth about what's happening here. Such as carlson going to Hungary to do his fox "commentary". Then we saw CPAC go to Hungary and Orban (dictator) coming to the US. "Republicans" and CPAC embracing Orban, the autocrat as he turns that country into a minority-white christian nation. So, all I so is state fact. But it's bombarded with extreme, right-wing conspiracy theorists who are allowed to propagate lies. I did get knocked off as a troll while the pretty insane lying is allowed to continue.
So, thanks to Sitejabber, for allowing me to see that I'm not the only one out here who sees city-data allowing right-wing extremists to rant but conveniently blocks out the truth. What a country.
If you hate everybody who isn't lily white, feel that the wimmin folks should stay in their place and that all Hispanics be shot on sight just in case - then this is the site for you. I don't mind a good discussion even if it gets a little rough around the edges, but the mods are so far to the right and enforce their POV so rigorously that you can get banned for typing a post with your left hand - I kid you not. I once even received an infraction for writing "sic transit gloria mundi" (Latin for thus passes the glory of the world). You are allowed to post only in 'Merican. Enter at your own risk!
I have been on and off this forum for a few years now. Every time I ask a question the response is poor. A blatant display of rather limited IQ. Despite how the question is written in clear English & detailed enough a teenager or younger could understand. That's the general forums.
Then you get into the actual "city" areas and it's just a bunch of vagabonds pretending that they actually live in these cities. They wish. I've lived in a few major cities in America and some of the posts relating to these cities it's like wth you've never lived there, you're googling information.
And politics. Bunch of inbred slackjaws beating their chests like gorillas & figuratively pissing in corners like dumb dogs saying America is my land, I get nowhere & contribute little to nothing to society but me own it.
Please see this post and tell me what constitutes this as being a troll?
I was banned because I didn't like smoke coming into my apt. I stood my ground:
This site is a joke literally. Can I get around the ban o'course I can should I no I shouldn't.
Here is the direct link it is called "Smoking in apt complexes on balconies"
http://www.city-data.com/forum/renting/*******-smoking-apt-complexes-balconies-4.html
Mass mindedness at it's best. You would think cd would want their members to be informed and educated on current issues... but cd calls that "trolling." I was banned for stating the truth about Memphis... it's a ghetto! The 2nd most violent city in the U.S. according to the FBI. Mods must have political or finical ties to Memphis... or just enjoy sending sheep to the slaughterhouse. This is a wanna be reddit... don't waste your time!
All the rumors are true. This is a meeting place for racist rednecks. Anyone who challenges the paranoid lunatic conspiracy theories is labeled a communist and immediately banned. Breeding ground for the most extreme elements of our society. Safe space for the most ignorant and uneducated dregs of society.
Regardless of what forum you go within City-Data, there's tons of biases in posts that mostly have an extreme right wing talking point (all state sections of CD and the other parts as well) I saw posts where people attempt to talk counterarguments of the extreme Right-Wing talking posts get quickly deleted and/or banned. The Politics and Other Controversies section of CD forums is where most of the posts of the forums take place... and there's tons of "wonderful" extreme Right-Wing subject threads like these:
*Yea Baby Floor The Gas Pedal! Oklahoma drivers now have immunity from hitting rioters in streets
*Masks still don't work - new study, major media completely ignores
*72% of black children born out of wedlock
*Rules for white people when visiting the Floyd memorial?
Yup... unless you want to be in this Echo Chamber... I recommend to avoid it like the plague.
Tip for consumers:
Avoid
I have to disagree with a lot of other peoples reviews stating that City Data is all conservative and Republican. Some of their moderators/admins must be the opposite of that.
I have been banned a few different occasions for reasons that are unclear. They just say I am a troll, a racist, or a racist troll. That is not "conservative" dialogue. It is progressive immature Liberal types.
All in all, it is a great format for a message board but the owners and site managers are childish at best.
Unsure why they allow long time posters to post as they wish and I am banned and labeled a racist troll or whatever it is they say.
Time to try Reddit instead.
The city-data political sub-forum ---as well as most of their forums increasingly over the years--- is rampant with radicalized Trump Republicanism and myriad posters who seem to be on a mission committed to the wholesale destruction of the United States' political order. These posters--- who wholeheartedly advocate against American democracy, our institutions and the rule of law--- belittle, lie about and threaten those of opposing views, and then are coddled by the moderators. Posters supplying facts and credible supporting documentation are suspended and their posts removed, and then warned in scathing private messages that if they persist the suspension will be a permanent ban... Truth and facts are considered trolling on city-data.com.
This website and its mods appear hell-bent on stifling and eradicating those who credibly and decently try to support & preserve U.S. democracy in posts that push back on the extremism and violent ideology that proliferates on city-data.com.
Bored? Want some quality entertainment peering into the mindset of the lowest common denominator? Visit the $#*!ty Data Forum - St. Loser, Misery page for some of the most imbecilic, self-aggrandizing and flatulent crap ever spouted from a collection of pathetic, bohemian-living masochists. Or basically - how to justify a collapsing ghetto of a town with anecdotal rhetoric as opposed to facts (St. Louis SUCKS!).
Though C-D permits itself to ban members from the site. It does not have a straightforward mechanism which would allow a person to cancel their membership. I can understand that there are a number of reasons they would not want members flitting in and out on a whim, but they do not seem to allow a person to leave on even a now-and-forever basis.
Essentially you have to maneuver to get thrown out it seems.
UPDATE 5/21/21: If you want info on local communities, you can get good input on those sub-forums. However, many of the other sub-forums are pretty weird. Most members identify as Boomers and conservatives, but few are Christian. The Christianity sub-forum has mostly liberal Christians or atheists on there who poke fun at the 2 or 3 conservative Christians who post sometimes there. The Politics section, meanwhile -- which is MUCH larger -- is generally far-right, but curiously almost completely secular. Most are either pro-abortion or pro-sterilization; they don't want liberal children to be born, or at least don't want liberals to be able to produce children. I didn't know such a large number of people existed in the US, but they sure do gravitate toward CityData's politics forum. I've posted on the forum on and off for a few years, but I think I'm done with such a crowd.
Did you ever see the movie Napoleon Dynamite? It's a movie about an awkward teenager who hangs out with a bunch of misfits. Well picture that but with racists, that's City Data Forum. In the movie Napoleon Dynamite, the characters are odd eccentrics but well meaning and likable. The posters and moderators on city data however don't have any of those redeeming qualities. These are the crazy racist neighbors or co-workers that nobody talks too. The members aren't just your run of the mill racists like your uncle, no, these are the basement dwelling ones that consider Fox news too mainstream or the NRA too soft. Just thinking about these band of miscreants makes me sick. I left the forum recently and never intend to look back. I hope I can save you the time and energy from posting on that time waster.
So this site is pretty odd to me. It is supposed to be a discussion site on cities/data/urbanism with fair game to have discussion. It is heavily moderated to even the slightest disagreement like we are children in elementary school and cannot have a fair discussion. A lot of bias. And overall it is complete $#*!.
Suspicious activity, abuse of power, unfair. Seems to be teeming with paid shills, mass media, government and military trolls, hasbara agents, people's opinion guidance operatives that want to control what you say and when you say it.
Some of the mods seem to over react to the most trivial of reasons, be careful which sections you frequent or you may be banned for life. Steer clear of the "Ask the Forum" section and the" politics and other controversies" section The rest of the forum can be a source of much information.
As an ex-New Yorker, living in Virginia for 32 years and now looking to move to another state I have found City Data to be extremely helpful in weeding out places I would not want to live. The forums are very helpful because they put you in touch with people who actually live in those places and the pages on City Data are overwhelmingly helpful when it comes to things like population and crime statistics. Real estate agents are by law not allowed to discuss things I feel I have a right to know before I move someplace. I check City Data for every city I consider. There are other sites I check also, and the truth is when I do actually visit those cities, while house hunting, I find that the majority of what is written, whether it is good or bad turns out to be true. City Data isn't just helpful, it's a necessity.
The cesspool of the internet. This is where logic comes to die. Bunch of ignorant slackjawed racist rednecks. I feel dumber everytime I go on there and read a post. Utter waste of time. Don't bother. Zero useful information. I'll sum it up for you. Cities bad, liberals bad, immigrants bad, non whites bad, christians good, white good, conservatives good. That's every conversation.
Welcome to City-Data. By collecting and analyzing data from numerous sources, we're able to create detailed, informative profiles of all cit
