“Second time around is not the charm”

When I first used this service, it worked seamlessly. The second time through, it failed miserably. The server was either too slow or non-responsive. And there is no way to contact a real person by phone or chat. All you can do is file a trouble ticket and sulk. They need to dedicate more resources on web servers and real people to support customers from all over the country.

When I first had to sign up for getting a new passport in the spring, I didn't understand what it was doing or how it would be used. I had tried the "third option" for social security a year earlier and ended up making a mess and finally getting back to my old way of signing in. After renewing the passport, I had occasion as treasurer of a small organization to use it to submit a report to the IRS. I followed the directions and it was easy peasy! Then today I had occasion to sign in to SSA again and chose ID.me with confidence. It is a little slow and a notice to please wait would be appreciated but other than that, easy peasy again. No second level verification text or email. More information about changes like this upfront would help people to understand what is going on and the benefit in the future. Anytime it is offered to me in the future, I will accept it.

Whatever you do don't use the pc because the program the company uses is flawed browser is clunky and refused to turn my mic amd camera on (Facebook amd zoom) run just fine. Otherwise just stick with smartphone and process will be smoother and not have to fight with it.

Sadly, zero stars was not an option or I wouId have chosen zero. This is a privacy invasive process that puts you at risk with a third party. There are other means to verify people's identity that are not risky(like this process) and invasive which should be used.

ID. Me is a great concept. I deal with finance and insurance for remote clients every day- so I've an idea of the level of fraud going on out there. My new ID.me account was mostly set up, but not verified. I'd prepped scanned copies of vital docs on my computer - but the process didn't need that much from me, just the phone camera and a good charge on the battery! Once I got past my own thoughts, the process worked flawlessly.

For me it was difficult to upload documents. For instance driver's license to upload in the diagram it gives a + sign. I took that as it meant to add a picture. When in reality you have to click on the word "front". And then of course the word "back" that's just one example there are others very similar to that which when added together make it a long process.

Likely because they use poor methods that don't compensate for Menlo security certificate proxies at government installations, but who knows. Reeks of incompetent programming and a lack of customer care. They have nothing but a rude subgenius chatbot for support and it was worthless as well when encountering registration/login issues.

Imagine having someone ask for your ID at a liqueur store. No, not some underpaid, disgruntled employee, maybe a partially trained baboon would be a better analogy.

I have a brand new phone with a good camera. I tried half a dozen times to upload my drivers license. Black background, white background, brightly lit room, darker room. Every time: "Sorry it didn't work, try again." Then tried the same thing with passport. Same result. Then tried the live selfie function. In three different rooms in my home, against different walls. Shades open, shades closed. "We're sorry, it didn't work, try again."

It took easily two hours of frustrating attempts over two days before I used a live representative, who was very nice, and it all worked. But the automated (tech) portion of the process was a dumpster fire, in a flooded river, falling off a waterfall.

I found it worked once. The next time I was forced to use it, it didn't work and I was told (by a computer system) my account was suspended. I could not receive any additional information about why. It took weeks for my account to be fixed. There was no communication before the notice that it was fixed. Then, it worked. I have no confidence that it will work next time.

Tip for consumers:
It might work . Don't use it if you have a choice, but probably, you will not have a choice.
