“Great website!”

JONATHAN J.

Great website! Cool approach to the online dating world. Mostly clean well managed, Free! There are obviously things that could be improved, like server speed or conversation approaching style option expansion, but again it's free.

Top Critical Review

“Low grade, no preferences, quantity over quality with few good options”

Ghostwriter t.
10/4/24

I came onto this site twice, each time paid the monthly fee and each time my preferences were totally ignored. I am specific about what I want so that I do not have to go through 100's of men's profiles to weed out the men who smoke or want children. I find this website did absolutely nothing for me. They say no particular pictures are allowed to be posted yet they are constantly posted and low quality people are here to choose from because no one is checking the sites for quality assurance. This is the worst site as far as low level for the price, is should always be free if the site isn't doing what it claims its doing for you.

Okcupid is a fraud!
Stay far save your money. I joined for free, they let me browse a little, I received and sent few messages. Suddenly all stopped working. The only option they gave me was to subscribe. I was cautious and I got only 1 month subscription for 34 euro (in the end they charged 38 euro).
In less than 24 hours I got 208 likes and many messages. A dream, no? But to see who liked me or messaged, Okcupid asked me to pay more, to browse profiles they asked to pay once more. All was around upgrades and money. In 3 days experience on the site, I saw only 10-20 profiles. Same profiles, every day, no search criteria by location, age, etc. I just could not get in touch with anyone. Of course, I smelled the fraud. I immediately contacted their customer support asking to cancel as soon as possible my subscription and my profile, explaining why.
Is the first time when I was scammed online. I have to admit the site is well done to trick and still your money. I should've read reviews before I paid.
How and why this site and fraud continues to work legally? They should be taken to the court.

I've been on OKC for several years, on and off. I have met several ladies through the site who I had a lot of fun with. I like the fact that is essentially free. Most sites don't let you message people unless you pay. OKC is not like that you can message people right away. I suppose the downside is that many women especially the more attractive ones get a TON of messages. As a guy I find that many women don't respond to my messages often, my best results is where the girl has contacted me first.

I like the Q&A format. While some people who have answered 1000 questions just have too much time on their hands, I find it enables me to get a good feel if we are compatible. E.g. People who answer the question "Which is bigger the sun or the earth" and get it wrong blow me away! It makes me wonder if they rest of their answers are random.

I pay for A-list so that I can browse profiles without being seen and I can tell if a girl opened my email and just did not respond.

The biggest thing about OKC I like is the clean layout. Compared to the mess that is PlentyofFish OKC is super organized. They changed navigation slightly recently and I don't like it as much but it's still very clean.

And once again it's free.

Too many scammers and fake people on this site. The site now asks for photo to create a profile, so many still have picures of the floor, buildings, but not themselves.

Men looking for easy ways to have sex. On night stands are what most of them want. I did run into a con artist however who wanted sex and money. I think he is probably married. On our first date he came on very strong physically. Then he basically ignored me after asking for money for gas. He called me later and asked me for 1k for a household repair. It was out of the blue after much time had passed. I told him no. Then 6 months later he showed up at my doorstep asking for money. I made the mistake of letting him in. I gave him $40 so he would leave. He scared me. It has been over a year and he has not showed up at my home, so I hope I'm ok now. I contacted the site to report him and they did nothing. The other guys I met on there were just looking for a hook up and when I turned them down they sent me abusive angry messages. After ok Cupid I had no desire to date for a year and a half. I became totally uninterested due to the trauma of ok Cupid. If i had been looking to be used and abused for sex and money this would have been the site for me. Fortunately I want something healthy. I found using a religious site works better and the guys move more slowly and actually get to know the person.

Tip for consumers:
Don't use it. If it's free there's a reason for it. If you want rapid random hookups/one night stands from men this is the site for you. If you want to give money to strangers this is the site for you. Otherwise stay far away.

This is pretty cool site for casual dating, it is about time something else besides POF. If you are looking for something more adult oriented though then you could try DateorPlay.com

Up front I give this site 5 stars. I am astonished that it is not the most popular site. Why: because it is the only free site that I have found that gives basic real contact with other participants, which just does not exist at any other site that I have looked at. No one seems to make this fact clear. You can pay for more features, but the lack of these features does not prevent you from making real contact. All the other sites want to charge you as soon as you click on sending a message and want to lock you into automatic renewal at substantial rates. In fact, looking at the reviews of these other sites, it looks as though they are being run by con artists. The constant changing of the cost at these other sites also suggests that they are trying to manipulate you.
As to the people presenting themselves at OKc, I have not found any evidence that it does represent the normal spectrum of people that you meet in every day life.
My suggestion is that you try it. I wonder if the negative reviews have been submitted by the other unscrupulous sites. It is well within the domain of a psychopaths.

Tip for consumers:
I think my revue says it all.

So, the fact was that I tried out loads of dating websites last four years and OK Cupid was one of such, it's usability was 'A' okay (user friendly) but my complain is that based on it's history on the list of top dating site, OKCupid had the potential to be the best of the best, it's progressive progression is so slow to the point that it's less to be desired after using the platform for a long period of time. But on a scale of 1 - 10 I'll still rate OKCupid a hard 6.

OKCupid has a nice interface and the questions it asks are a good way to get to know someone. The people (at least in my experience) seem real. I've used it in the past, been on loads of dates and met my last long-term relationship from there.

Having recently become single, I decided to try it out again. Unfortunately, they have changed the site in such a way that only messages from people who have 'matched' will be seen. Basic dating site maths means this enormously reduces the chances of meeting someone you get on with, and your messages aren't likely to even reach the inbox of the intended recipient. At the same time, if someone has messaged you, you won't see it unless you've seen and swiped right on their profile beforehand. You might have been sent a dozen messages and not know about any of them.

A really nice site, spoiled by a weird attempt to kill off connections between people. It's still possible to eventually match with people by spending hours swiping away like a drone, but remember that there are many times more men than women on here, so the chances that you'll even be shown to a woman as a possible match if you're male are pretty low (assuming it randomises users when showing them on the match screen).

The changes have significantly reduced the popularity of the site, but I suspect they were done as someone's pet project and they're too stubborn to reverse things.

I'm now having more luck elsewhere, hopefully they'll see sense and change it back.

This site has a lot going for it.

A) it's free -- can't beat that
B) it has a high percentage of queer folks, something other sites don't
C) they send you emails recommending matches, if you don't have time to search

On the downside

A) the searching aspect is really cumbersome. I find that clicking "Browse Matches" just shows the same old people I've seen for like a decade. (I've been on it a while.) But the trick is to click on the lower right hand corner, where it shows you a few new people. (Hard to explain, but you'll see when you use it.)

B) It tends to attract bisexuals and poly people, which may be a plus for some, but isn't for me

C) Some of the people on it are crazy, but that's true wherever you go

D) You can't see which people liked you without paying a fee, though sending and receiving messages is free

E) their profiles ask some stupid questions and their matching system is messed up

F) I find that months will go by before I see anyone new and interesting on this site

Overall, though, it's better than any other site I've used. Match, HowaboutWe and JDate included. Still, I think they could do better.

I went on this site after my son found a nice woman who he's now been with for three years.

In the year I've been on the site I've had several coffee dates but only got past a one or two date situation once and we saw each other for three months before deciding it wasn't working for us.

Everyone I've met has been nice and looked like their pictures or better. A few encounters never got past the messaging stage but for the most part they were OK experiences. You will get messages from obvious scammers but all you have to do is block them.

After a year I see many of the same faces so after having decided they won't work for me it narrows the field down considerably and I lose interest for awhile.

I have a woman friend on OKCupid and as I had suspected it's a whole different type of experience for a woman. She showed me the types of messages she's received and it seems for every guy who seems sincere there are 10 smarmy or downright creepy guys. I can't believe how douchey some of those guys are.

My son is very happy though and I think he and his girlfriend will probably get married.

An update: I met a woman on okcupid about 5 months ago and things are going great between us. I think this one may last.

I think, hands down, ok cupid is the best free site... and coming close to the best site overall. It has thousands of questions and tests... the more you answer, the closer it can match you (so it claims) though some of the matches are baffling. It also forms a personality profile on you based on your question answers and test results. There also seem to be a wider variety of people on this site than most.

UNFORTUNATELY, match.com bought ok cupid a couple of years ago. And they've slowly been removing functionality from the site ever since. Dumbing it down, removing useful features... by stealth. For instance, you cannot locate profiles without pictures now if you do a search. Before it was a checkable option. They've removed the Forum and Blog component entirely... where many members were complaining about the recent changes. Now they no longer show you when your 'favourites' are on line... a useful feature.

Perhaps these features will return one day... with a price tag on them. But, from a commercial point of view, it doesn't make much sense for match.com to maintain a free site they own... that is a much better dating site than their pay site. It's only going to get worse.

You've been warned.

I had utilized OKCupid before between 2012 to around 2019. I was able to land a number of quasi successful relationships. Years later, when I was in a place in which I felt online dating was called for again, I decided to return to OKCupid, especially after reading on one news site that compared dating apps, and noted that a strength of OKCupid was the large database of participants. I pulled the trigger and set up my profile. I was very surprised by the number of likes that I had received, especially compared to other dating apps I had tried. I received 80 within a 24 hour period! I should have been more suspicious than I was. Thinking that I did not want to miss out on an opportunity, I decided to do something that I did not originally plan, that is to purchase a premium service. I went with the mid-tier 3 month for just under $90. When the transaction was complete and I could see who actually supplied those likes, I IMMEDIATELY regretted my decision and felt like I had blown close to $100. Only two of the likes came from my home state. The vast majority of them came from Kenya, Uganda, Philippines, and Thailand. I had even applied a 25 mile limit in my preference section. What's worse is that I had emailed OKCupid customer service to address my displeasure of this interface design, and voiced that I thought there was some deception involved in getting their customers to go premium, but after several days, they have not even bothered to respond. On top of that, the selection of local singles/participants is quite limited. Avoid OKCupid at all cost.

I can only claim three days experience but in that time I wasted many hours answering almost 2000 questions only to have my entire profile vanish.

Next day I tried to log in and it said "account deleted"

Today I created another account because I wanted to use the forum to find help. You can read problems others had in the forum but you cannot post unless you log in. When you do log in you cannot access the forum... it just redirects you back to the home page. Basically you cannot complain about problems.

10 minutes after creating the account ( no info in profile yet) I went back to log in and it said "account deleted"?

Now several hours I can again log in to the test account but my primary account still says "deleted".

These are classic signs when a company like this is in trouble and about to close its doors, technical problems go unresolved, forums and blogs are disabled for comment, support emails go unanswered.

I won't waste those hours again. If they fix the problem and I can finally access my account again and have not lost that work I will give it a try. But if they lost everything then I give up.

A site like this, hype aside, is useless if it does not function and they won't fix it.

UPDATE: 1/6/14

Well now that I created a new account in order to try to gain access to forums to complain, that account was also deleted. Bottom line, these people refuse to let anyone complain about anything. If you do you will not get any response or support, they will simply delete your account without any warning or explanation.

This site is free to swipe through a deck and it has good filter options. Don't pay to see likes. Likes is an accumulation of people who liked you, even if you didnt hit like on them. So in short, if someone liked you and you swiped left, they are still counted in the 99+ of likes you see waiting. This is in addition to the new persons who like you that you have not yet seen plus the ones you swiped right on. So yes folks you CAN see likes. You will see them eventually in the mixed stack. The match makes you chat with the person long enough. I have only encountered a limited stack maybe once or twice. They will tell you come back in 24hrs to swipe again. The deck also restarts if you have gone through all possible matches. You have the optiom to change your location on there, it then allows you to browse matches in any country. If you are rich and able to travel then that's a great way to meet your connection on an international level. If you have limited options don't bother. For me, men always asked if I were in their country. When I said no, they would immediately stop talking. People on their dislike distance. But some great guys were on there. Scammers lurk too so beware of bad grammar and cliche 3 worded summaries. The real ones will sit and write out a good summary to introduce themselves because they genuinely want to meet someone. Happy searching! May you find the love I have yet to find in life. We all deserve a great love.

I have used this site for years. It is free and that is good. However, there are a lot of players and scammers on Okcupid. You really have to sort through the people. It seems worse if you change settings to "interested in men/women anywhere" Many times they will gang up on you. One will ask a question and it's strange how another will come on the site and immediately question you on same question. Sometimes they will act like they know what you told another person. And they really don't carry on a conversation that much or they have a lot of strange grammar. Most all of them are really good looking and it seems instantaneously they are wanting to chat like they have you on radar... but they just want information and usually disappear. Most of the time they want to get off the site and want you to give them your number, email or hangout address which I refrain.

Okcupid does have a bunch of personality tests and quizzes which I think is really cool. When they are trying to match you up with someone, you get matched by a certain percent according to the questions you both have answered.
