Scribd has a rating of 1.4 stars from 877 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers complaining about Scribd most frequently mention credit card, free trial, and customer service problems. Scribd ranks 199th among Ebook sites.
Been a user for about 3 years now and I'm continually surprised by what I can find here, from mags, through books to audiobooks. All at a bargain price, half of ehat audible charges for 1 book a month.
Joined Scribd/Everand a month ago. Their "free trial" is not free. They charged my account twice within that 30-day free trial period...once after two weeks of the trial and then at the end of it. I canceled my subscription and notified my bank of the fraud. Not only am I disputing the charges but a Have had the bank remove the card from my account so they can't continue to steal from me. I had hoped this subscription would be good...it seemed so at first. Then, I found out that not only are they fraudulent in their charges but there's a limit on how many books you can read in a billing cycle. Initially, when you search online for a good ebook subscription, Everand seems like a good choice until you actually have to deal with them. The complaints about them outweigh the good reviews and all seem to have a common thread - deceptive business practices.
I had never heard of Scribd until I noticed that they have been taking £10.99 from my account for several months. I never signed up for this website as I do not listen to audio books. I tried to contact the company to no avail. I see that many other people have had this issue. I have been robbed of my money and I will take this to paypal and to the bank until I get my money back.
I have been getting charged for a year and a half at minimum from this company every month and I don't even know what it is. I initially emailed their customer service last year and they said they couldn't find my account. Well obviously because I don't and have never had one! They then wanted the last 4 of my card and all my details but then said they couldn't find it still so they wanted me to send the 10 digits of my credit card along with the security code, expiration date, etc. with all of my other details. Starting to think this company whatever it is, is a complete and utter scam!
We will never ask for your full payment information and we want to ensure you are being assisted to the best of our ability. Please provide us with your ticket number and we'll make sure one of our agents gets back to you as soon as possible.
If I could I would give no star.
I purchase the subscription and I was really enjoying the site until I saw my credit card bill. I was charged for the trial.
I contacted them and they refused to give a refund and also made a lot of excuses like I accessed premium content.
They also said that even though that was a trial I was going to be charged since I did not cancel, that's ok since I was planning to continue being a subscriber but I understand that I should only be charged after the trial not during it.
Hi Ana, would you mind updating this review to include the ticket number from your recent communication with our team? We'd like to take a closer looks at this. Thanks!
Do not subscribe. Not only will you not be sent a subscription ending reminder ( like they happily promised to do) you will not be refunded for unused months. There are better and more honest services available.
Hi Jayde, we're so sorry you did not receive your notice for the end of the trial! We are always happy to help with refunds. If you have already emailed us -- please update your review here with your ticket number. If you have not, please submit a ticket through this link https://scr.bi/assist so your request is escalated and resolved properly right away!
I am being charged even after canceling my subscription last year. The lack of a phone number or actual response from Scribd adds to my frustration. I can't even remove my card details from their site. This is unacceptable. Stay away from this site.
Hi there David, We're truly sorry for the difficulties you've encountered with the cancelation of your membership with us and would be happy to look into this for you. Please update your review with the ticket number associated with the email you sent us, and we'll follow up with you after that. Thanks!
I cancelled my account a month back, still this month Rs 585 has be deducted from my bank account. My profile shows I am not a member then how can you deduct money and it is shown payment details are not available then how did you deduct money. How can you cheat people like this.
Hi Harshini - I'm so sorry to hear that you were charged after you canceled. This most likely means that either your account was not actually canceled or you have a second account with us. Either way, we'll get this resolved for you. Please send us an email to help@scribd.com and we'll be happy to issue a refund. Thank you!
I got a free account, and also couldn't see what I wanted. Then I tried to go in and cancel, but the site said I didn't have an account. I thought I may need to wait a while for the account to generate but then forgot about it until I noticed charges on my card. I immediately went to the site to cancel, but it still said I didn't have an account to cancel. I waited over two weeks for a response, and then it still took another week to fix. To top it off, in the emails with the customer care person, I got told I didn't follow the right steps and was instructed on what to do in the future if I rejoined. These were the same steps I had already followed that did not work! Stay away from this site. It's a scam!
Hi Lindsay. I'm following up about the message I left you last week. I understand that you've already received a response from one of our support agent. Do you still have the ticket number? Please provide that ticket number and this will help me see what information was sent to you. Thank you. -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
I have not had a subscription for idk how many months but I continue to be charged. I can't cancel because I don't even have a card on file and my account says I'm not subscribed to anything! I have tried to contact them and cancel but nothing happens. This is ridiculous and basically stealing money from people.
Hi Tucker - Apologies for the delay! I've confirmed a member of our team was able to locate and cancel your membership. Feel free to reply to our message for further assistance, we're happy to help! Thank you!
For some reason that I am not aware yet, scribd chaged me for a subscription I neve agreed in the first place.
I opened a request for a refund and haven't received any answer. I tried to check my e-mail and see if I had agreed to it or if there was any confirmation of a subscription, but nothing appeared.
I am deeply frustrated with this platform and theses tricks to make money on us. Seriously,
Hi Ana, we're sorry for any confusion here. It sounds like you have an active subscription with us. We'd be happy to help with a cancellation and refund. Please submit a ticket through this link so we can get this resolved for you: https://scr.bi/assist
I got a call from a Number *******475. When I answered it all I heard is a sound - ping. Later 5 mins after I checked my account and there is a charge of $8.99. I called the number it's from a Tom Spring. His linked said he works in IT and is a writer too. I called scribd. No real person answered said refer to website. It will force you to enter ur account log in. I saw their materials. It's like libtards writings. Like book about obamas. Hate against trump.
Hi Olivia - I'm not sure I understand the relationship between the call you received and a charge from Scribd. We do not place outbound calls and we certainly do not have the ability to charge your credit card from a phone call; this is an impossibility. Most likely, you created a subscription with us that you've forgotten about. Please email us at help@scribd.com and we'll be happy to locate your subscription and cancel it for you.
Worst site. I don't understand how Scribd is allowed to be in existence. This site is HORRIBLE. I never started a "membership", only signed in with my facebook for a one time use type of situation because it was quick and easy. And this is exactly how they get people! I don't even use their website, have never uploaded my credit card info, yet somehow they have my credit card number on file and have been charging me for MONTHS
Hi Danish - We do not offer a "one time" sign-in situation and only offer a recurring monthly subscription membership. Most likely, you did not cancel your subscription, which is why these charges came through. Please send us an email to help@scribd.com and we'll be happy to ensure your subscription is canceled and issue a refund. Thank you!
I was an annual subscriber to Scribd over the past 6 years. The annual subscription cost was $47.99.
I received a warning that my subscription was expiring and my payment details must be updated. I attempted to do so using my valid credit cards but the site would not permit updating although my cards had been verified on the website.
Every time I contacted customer support I received the generic instructions on how to update payment details, but they never addressed that the website would not update after the card was verified.
My account expired and now I received this from Diane R:
"I'm so sorry for this, but we do not currently offer a purchasable annual subscription plan. The annual was still available for anyone that had a recurring annual subscription. However because your card was flagged as fraud and your account expired, we cannot actually offer a purchasable annual plan to you directly at this time, though we hope to be able to do so again in the future."
David, we're sending you a private message to connect and make this right for you!
Months ago, I subscribed for your 30 days trial. Two days before my trial period was over, I cancelled my subscription! I was 100% sure, but it turns out that no - it wasn't complete for some reason! So that two days later I was charged with one month, that I didn't ask for. I'd like to have a refund, since - as it turned out - I wasn't the only one facing this issue...
Request #*******
Hi Luigi- It looks like you were charged a few days before you cancelled your subscription. I've gone ahead and issued a refund!
I woke up to a $10.81 charge to my card! I cancelled my subscription right away and I want my money back! I can see if I was reminded that I would be charged, but no, nothing! I am no longer using the services, so I just want my money back.
Oh no! I am so sorry if you did not receive our notification email and we are absolutely here to help you. Please use this link to contact support and one of our agents will help you ASAP https://scr.bi/assist
Scribd charged my card without authorization. They abused my trust. Scribd said my card would not be charged without my permission and then this awful company actually charged my card. This is totally unacceptable. Who regulates these crooks? I demand an immediate refund.
Hi Chubi, we're sorry for any confusion here. Just to clarify, Scribd does not "sign up" or "start subscriptions" for our users without their consent. In order for someone to have an active subscription with us, the only way to do so would be for them to sign up when creating an account or restart/renew their membership from their Account Settings page.
With that being said, we've located your account and accompanying subscription that was created on July 29th, 2020. To confirm, when you purchased the trial, you agreed to the terms and conditions under the Subscriber Agreement (https://support.scribd.com/hc/en-us/articles/210129486) that stated this was not a one-time purchase, but instead a recurring month to month subscription. Scribd does not offer a standalone free trial.
Per your recent support ticket (#2860593), one of our specialists was able to assist you and cancel the subscription so you will not be billed further. We've also issued a refund for the recent charge, so please allow 3-5 business days for this to process. We hope this helps to clear things up for you. Please let us know if you need anything else moving forward -- thanks!
You get the free look. You cancel the free look during the free look period. They continue to charge your card till you catch them. They have a policy of not giving you back your money after 30 days. They must know most people after looking at all the titles see it's not for them and cancel during the free period. So they just have to steal from you to make there dishonest dollar.
Hi Robert - To confirm, when you cancel your subscription with us you will immediately receive a confirmation email of the cancellation to your primary email address on file. If you did not receive this confirmation email from us, then the subscription cancellation was not completed by you. We make this very clear in our cancellation guide, found here: https://support.scribd.com/hc/en-us/articles/210134046-How-to-cancel-your-premium-membership
As always, if you need additional assistance, our support team is more than happy to help. If you haven't already, please email us at help@scribd.com and update your review with your ticket number. We can have someone follow-up with you right away. Thanks!
This used to be a great service. I was happy until now when they made a lot of changes, they are greedy definitively, I have the service for 2 years. Today I realize that lot of books that I have been used study frequently for one year or more now they put in preview mode; what is the meaning of this? Well, now I must to download again this books and they are going to count in the free three mountly books, rely? I don't recommend scribd
#Update: Charges were returned, though I wouldn't recommend anyone to subscribe to "free trials". //// Not happy with my experience, i have cancelled my "subscription" after the "free trial" and i noticed today that they are still charging me! Support ticket #*******. I ask you to revert all charges made and cancel my subscription once and for all. My bank has been informed today of these unathorized charges.
Hi Sandra - I'm sorry to hear about your experience. According to your ticket number, it looks as though Jasmine has issued you a full refund and everything is now resolved.
Best,
JF
I'm totally unsatisfied with Scribd service. Can you give me a refund? I was on the free trial for one and didn't sign up any subscription for 1 year. I haven't used any service from Scribd since I signed in. I tried to cancel my subscription before my free trial expired but Scribd kept on charging for 1 year now. This is fraud and totally unacceptable. Moreover, I didn't receive any email that informs me about the payment. How can I receive my refund?
I used my credit card to sign up on October 11th and now I just receive the payment notification, so it is expired. I'm so disappointed.
I sent an email to *******@support.com and my support ticket is #*******. Please reply my email and help me refund my purchase.
Hi Bich - This was responded to today by one of our Customer Joy Creators and they've issued a refund! If you have any further questions, please reply to the email that was sent to you!
I figured, after few years of being the member, that once you stop being a member you loose all the books you have read before. Basically, if you want to have an access to the books they give you, you have to keep purchasing the membership. You are paying access to the books, not books. Even the ones I bought for extra money, not for the credits I have received as a member, were taken away from me. I figured if I bought one book a month, I'd have them now, then them giving me three that I have only as long as I am paying. Kinda not fair.
If you try to cancel your account you only get this answer:
"You have an active membership to Scribd. Before you can delete your account, you must cancel your membership."
And they will try to charge you forever.
It will be easy for you to cancel your credit card, that try to cancel your account with them.
Tip for consumers:
Stay away
Hi there! So sorry for any confusion here. To delete your Scribd account, you do need to cancel your active subscription first. We're happy to help with this if you were still experiencing trouble! Just email us at help@scribd.com. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
After reading this other articles I was worried that I was doomed with the charge that I had just incurred. But, after submitting a 'request' on the Scribd website I was refunded the full charge within 10 minutes. Given their... questionable cancellation practice, I was incredibly shocked by this. When I did use the account, it was definitely worth it to find books that otherwise weren't readily available. However, not enough selection to warrant the charge.
Hey Preeti - Thanks for your feedback! We're glad to hear that we were able to assist you in getting this resolved quickly. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us again in the future if you need additional assistance. Thanks again, and have a great day!
Signed up for free trial.
They didnt have the documents I needed.
Cancelled during the trial period, before they were to debit my card.
Shifty buggers processed two charges to my account.
I complained and all they do to stall you and avoid refunding the money they stole is to quote a bullsh|t story: " It looks like you purchased a subscription with us using an alternate email address and may have forgotten about it. "
They say this to everyone so they can avoid refunding the money they steal.
I NEVER signed up with another email address. Stop telling me that I did, Scribd, you bunch of scammers and thieves.
Hi Brad - I'm sorry to hear about your issue with unexpected charges. As explained previously, most likely a second account was accidentally created, which is why you're being charged. Please reply to this with your ticket number and I can help resolve this with you!
I had a free trial and cancelled before it expired and yet my card was still charged. When I tried to request a refund, I was never replied to. So they are slow to help you, but are fast to clear your payment for themselves.
My username: brandon2beerup
Hi Brandon. Thanks for providing our username and we have located your ticket. There will be more information regarding the delay in response and your refund in the response email. Thanks! -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
Scribd makes it impossible to contact them to cancel a subscription. I have a subscription I don't want and i have no evidence of having signed up for this, but I cannot contact them for an explanation. I seem to have a profile on their site but cannot sign in. I have no trust in this website.
Thanks for reaching out here as well, Marguerite. Please know, we are sorry you've had trouble with your account and we are here to help you. That said, I have already emailed you back on the Better Business Bureau and through our support channel. Please email me back via your ticket #3266104 so I can assist you with cancelations and refunds there. For now, thanks for your time, and have a good day! - EC
