Scribd has a rating of 1.4 stars from 877 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers complaining about Scribd most frequently mention credit card, free trial, and customer service problems. Scribd ranks 199th among Ebook sites.
Been a user for about 3 years now and I'm continually surprised by what I can find here, from mags, through books to audiobooks. All at a bargain price, half of ehat audible charges for 1 book a month.
Joined Scribd/Everand a month ago. Their "free trial" is not free. They charged my account twice within that 30-day free trial period...once after two weeks of the trial and then at the end of it. I canceled my subscription and notified my bank of the fraud. Not only am I disputing the charges but a Have had the bank remove the card from my account so they can't continue to steal from me. I had hoped this subscription would be good...it seemed so at first. Then, I found out that not only are they fraudulent in their charges but there's a limit on how many books you can read in a billing cycle. Initially, when you search online for a good ebook subscription, Everand seems like a good choice until you actually have to deal with them. The complaints about them outweigh the good reviews and all seem to have a common thread - deceptive business practices.
Scribd offers a great range of books, audio books, documents, magazines and sheet music all for one low monthly price. In response to some of the other reviews, it is clear when signing up for the free month that you will be billed unless the subscription is cancelled. The cancellation process is really easy. If you love audiobooks and reading I'd recommend giving it a go.
Live conversations are not part of Scribd's customer service, nor is the 30 day FREE trial. I cancelled the service immediately after signing up, however while reviewing recent credit card charges I found the recurring $8.99 monthly charge. Only immediate recourse is to block further payments with Credit Card company until Scribd responds to this review.
More of my time, none of Scribd's.
Hi John! That sounds like the verification transaction that is explained in the confirmation email you received upon sign up. It's not an actual charge; the system does a transaction to verify that the card used is valid but it's automatically voided when it occurs so the money will never process out of your account. It should be listed on your account a few days as "pending" and then disappear as if it never happened; the exact timeframe on when it disappears will depend on your bank however. It is just a method used to verify that the card provided at sign up is valid so the service can be successfully added to your account. I apologize for any trouble it's caused for you! Our support team can confirm this for you if you could send us an email to help@scribd.com with your account email address. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
WOW, what a scam! Never signed up for this, having recurring payments withdrawn but when I log onto Scribd's sketchy website using the log in with Facebook tab it says I have no account. Trying to work with bank to stop this.
Hi Amy! I’m so glad that our Trust and Safety support agent, Gary, was able to assist you with this and resolve the issues you were experiencing with your recurring payments. Please let us know if you have any other questions and/or concerns. Thanks again! - Donni, Scribd Customer Support
Scribd is a highly excellent site especially for authors and other writers who are looking for ways to bring attention to their work on the market. In the realm of publishing one will know that advertising costs are quite expensive but any free advertising is always well received and very well appreciated by those who want their writing materials to gain exposure on the internet.
What I like about scribd.com is that the free advertising and promotion potential of an author or writer is welcome especially if one is trying to find inexpensive ways to advertise their work online.
Don't ever give your credit card number to this site. They will charge you after cancelling. I had to cancel my credit card in order a new one for them to not be able to continue charging me. Avoid at all costs.
Hi Michael, we're truly sorry for the difficulties you had canceling your subscription with us. When you fully cancel your subscription, we'll ensure it remains active until the end of the month that you've paid for, but will not bill you again. It sounds like the charges may be originating from a duplicate account or unsuccessful cancellation, as it is impossible for us to bill a deactivated account.
We recommend checking out this article on how to successfully cancel your subscription located here https://support.scribd.com/hc/en-us/articles/210134046. For further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at help@scribd.com for support from our account specialists. Thanks!
I joined scribd.com for trial in Dec 27,2016. After i cancelled may payment card and membership, they continuously charge money about $10 every month.
They started charging about $10 in Jan. 25,2017 and it continued to Jun. 25 2017.
What the F*CK this site is. Why they do this to me without any notification?
After writing a letter to *******@scribd..., they refunded about $10 (max 1 month bill)
Already paid, but refused to refund more.
Hi Rich. I sent you a private message last week and have yet to hear back. Additional information was requested in order to locate your account and issue any refunds. Please respond with requested information. Thank you. -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
I joined Scribd quite a while back because I listen to about 5 or 6 audiobooks a month. Scribd seemed like the perfect option for me. $8.99 a month for unlimited reading and listening. Sounds almost too good to be true, well, that's because it is! They post many MANY books that are going to be available in a month's time. They make those books "available" for a very short time (less than a day) then take them away and say they will be available in another month. And this just keeps happening. I can't tell you how infuriating it is to listen to an hour or two of a book, go back to the site only to find that it's gone. I will not fall for their tricks & lies any more. I would tell anyone thinking of joining, don't do It! They get your hopes up month after month only to let you down every single time.
Hi Angela - We’re sorry these specific books are temporarily unavailable right now. While we cannot guarantee the immediate availability of every title, all titles found using our Explore page should be available right away: https://www.scribd.com/explore Still have questions? Email help@scribd.com - Thanks!
I've been trying to access my account by following the forgotten username/password on their website and it's misleading. I receive notifications that my email is in use and a password reset has been sent. Yes, spam and junk folders have been checked. It's impossible to get a hold of someone. But I keep getting charged monthly.
Thank you for informing us! We apologize for any trouble you've had resetting your password and contacting support. We can help escalate your case. If you've emailed us, you should have received a ticket number. Please let us know your ticket number and we can use that to send your ticket to the top of our queue. If you haven't emailed us yet, be sure to do so using this link: https://scr.bi/assist and we'll ensure one of our agents gets back to you within 24 hours -EC
I have not used it for more than an year. I cancelled the subscription few months back, but I am still being charged $8.99 each month. Since it is automatically deducted from my account, I did not pay attention, but it looks like it is normal. Please look at all your review. These are all 1 out of 5.
Hi Iam, our support staff would be more than happy to help you with this. Please reach out to help@scribd.com to connect with a support specialist, then update this review with your ticket # so we can follow up with you as soon as possible, and get this canceled for you. Thanks!
I woke up this morning to a transaction on my card from scribd. I was charged $8.99 without being informed. I have cancelled my subscription and am yet to know if my money will be refunded fully as I cancelled this same day of the charge.
Honestly, it is not good to wake up just to see a transaction on your card without prior notice.
Hi Kingsley, we can help make this right! Email help@scribd.com and update this review with the ticket # you receive so we can connect you with an agent for a refund asap. Thanks!
I have numerous problems with this company. The most frustrating is that their app does not work well. I've downloaded audiobooks that disappear from my phone for no reason. And when listening, it's not easy to go from streaming to using the download. Site navigation is terrible. As for content, their selection is limited. And much of it is abridged- yet they don't tell you it's abridged. As for cancellation, when you cancel, they won't give you your money back for unused credits. That seems like theft to me. STAY AWAY from this company.
I thought that the online versions of Scribd documents were deliberately slow, clunky, impossible to navigate and that's why they ask for money. However, you pay your money and get exactly the same. Then you cancel and they keep on charging you! They are crooks, plain and simple - and even write their own obviously fake reviews. Avoid Scribd at all costs. They need to go bust and disappear as quickly as possible.
Apologies for the troubles, a member of our support team can definitely help you with this! Please email us at help@scribd.com, then update your review with your ticket number and a member of our team will reach out to you shortly. Thanks!
This company has a questionable marketing strategy which is typically a negative method of obtaining a profit by "appearing" to offer documents and information that might be of help however the "previews" that are shown are not nearly enough to justify a purchase decision. This is a bad thing because it is a negative option or also referred to under other descriptions where the buyer is forced to subscribe in order to see if the document they need is actually available. Another serious flaw is that many of these documents are open source and are freely available without having to subscribe and pay a monthly charge. I have not found using this service to be of value.
Please feel free to email us at help@scribd.com with any questions or concerns, our support team is more than happy to assist you. Thanks!
DO not engage in business with this site! I cancelled my account with them MONTHS ago and just found out that they have continued charging me for this service. There is no customer service number (seriously, what legitimate business doesn't even give you a number to call and complain?) and their customer service reps obviously simply do not respond to support requests. Stay away!
Hi Adam! I sent you a private message on January 15th, but I've yet to hear back from you. Our Support team is happy to help and ensure that your subscription is canceled and issue a refund for you. Please let me know the email address associated with your Scribd account, or the ticket number you received when you wrote in to us. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
As with some other students that signed up for a scribd account during a free trial, I too was a victim of their constant subscription charges. For months I tried to contact someone and nothing. I finally had to report my card stolen so I could be issued one with new information.
Hi Harry - I'm so sorry to hear this. Please send us an email to help@scribd.com and we'll be happy to help with a refund. Thank you!
I opened up a ticket(*******) on 8/1 and received a response from them 20 days later. Their response to my ticket had nothing to do with the subject matter. So pathetic.
At this point I'm not looking for a response as I've cancelled my membership. I'll stick with Libby and it's free.
Hi Nancy, we're so sorry for the frustrating experience here. Upon review of your support ticket, it looks like we recently had a bug within the Scribd app that was producing an error for our Android users. The message that you received was sent out automatically from our system to all affected users to inform them of a resolution that came with the recent app update. We apologize if this message caused any confusion, and also for the delay in responding to your case sooner. We've recently experienced an increased number of requests coming through and have been working as quickly as possible to resolve them.
With that being said, we've escalated your ticket to a specialist for further review and clarification of the original issue you had written in about. You should be receiving a response from them by the end of the business day. Please continue to correspond with us via email in the meantime so we may best assist you. Thanks so much for your patience and understanding here!
They may say ‘unlimited' but alas, the books they give you are not what you truly want. You're roped in with the convenience of all the latest hot reads. As you near the end of the month, coincidently about the same time they're getting ready to bill you again, almost ALL of your saved books are no longer available. I had 205 saved titles only to find 200 were NOT going to be available to me until AFTER my next month's charge. They give you a song and a dance about there being plenty of other books to choose from. What are they? One of them is The Bobbsey Twins. Yes. The Bobbsey Twins. And they'll tell you there are others besides that... all classic books by others that are long gone. These books are readily available at your public library. No fee attached.
I can't help but feel that the books they take away each month from you is their way of ensuring they'll get your money next month.
And their customer service... horrible. You can't talk to anyone on the phone. I sent them a message days ago and no one has reached out.
I cancelled my subscription a damn week before my free trial ended and they still billed me! Now I find out they dont even have a customer service phone number! We need to make a class action suit against these thieves
Hi Muhammed - I'm so sorry to hear you were billed after cancelling. I'm happy to look into this for you. Please send us an email to help@scribd.com with ATTENTION JAMES in the subject line and I'll personally resolve this. Thank you!
Have been charged for several years monthly on credit card and never once was able to access my account and use the scribd services at all. No phone number for customer service is provided by scribd. All I get is canned answers to e mails that fail to address the problem at all. Ridiculous. In contrast, Audible customer service is excellent and I will have to stick with them. Meanwhile, I have to find a way to get scribd to stop charging my credit card. This is horrible. Very disappointed as I really liked what scribd claimed about their services and was eager to use it. Stay away from scribd! They owe me a refund.
Hi Mariellen - We're truly sorry for these issues you've experienced with your Scribd account and absolutely want to help! Please email us at help@scribd.com, then update your review with your ticket number and we'll reach out to you shortly. Thanks!
I signed up to listen to 'unlimited' audiobooks. At first glance, there seems to be a lot of choice. Until you actually listen to one or two books. Then suddenly, all the books you were interested in listening to and everything in your saved items list mysteriously become unavailable.
They claim this is to do with their 'rotating library' but it is simply too coincidental that this happens to be all the books in my saved list. This happened one month and I thought it was a blip. Didn't listen for about 6 weeks. Listened to a few books this month and the same thing happened again.
I am far from being the only person to remark upon this happening.
This website is completely disingenuous when it calls itself an unlimited service to the point where, in my opinion, it borders on being a scam.
Thanks for your review and I apologize for the confusion!
You are correct that we are a rotating library, which will cause specific titles to become unavailable as you read. This includes books in your "saved" list as well as books on your home screen. However, there will always be an unlimited amount of available titles to read on your home screen while you wait.

I cancelled my subscription with you in February before my free trial period ended, and you still saw it fit to charge me a month later.
Today (7/26/2020), I woke up this morning to a transaction on my card from Scribd. I cancelled with you months ago! What the hell is going on?
Thank you for letting us know - I am so sorry for the trouble with this charge! Since we cannot bill an account that is inactive, you likely have a failed cancelation or a duplicate account. So we can help you with this, please message us at https://scr.bi/assist and one of our agents will assist you as soon as possible. Thanks!
They don't have phone customer service. And when you cancel, in very small prime, they have the words complete cancellation after you already have pressed that button on two other pages. So you keep getting charged and you can't get out of it. It's corrupt and I want better from them.
Apologies for the troubles, C G., we want to make this right for you! Please email us at help@scribd.com, then update your review with your ticket number and a member of our team will reach out to you shortly. Thanks!
I've just noticed on my monthly transactions a £9.99 taken out by scribd. I've never once heard of this scam company or signed up to them. On further investigations I've noticed there's been 8 payments have been taken. Will be phoning my bank tomorrow to stop these thieves from taking anymore
Hi David, thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry to hear about this experience, however, our support team would be happy to investigate these charges and clarify the reason why you are encountering this. So we can best assist you, please submit a ticket through this link https://scr.bi/assist so your request can be escalated. Thanks! -AR
On June 21,2020, i was automatically billed for a subscription with Scribd. However, I was told that my account was on hold because they failed to process my payment. But a notification came to my phone showing that money had been taken out my account by Scribd. I have cancelled my subscription now but in the light of money being taken from me, why can't I use the account?
I'm kindly putting in a request for a refund and a thorough explanation to all of this.
Thank you so much for letting us know about the trouble with your account - I am so sorry you've been having trouble with these charges! Since we are not able to charge canceled accounts, it seems likely that you may have a duplicate account in our system. So we can check into this further, please contact us at help@scribd.com and update this message with your ticket number. Someone will be in touch soon - thanks!
My account has been doubled charged since 2018, I requested a cancellation and refund twice and the picture shows where the refunds were credited. This service has no phone number and they refuse to stop charging my account, I have no current subscriptions with them.
Hi Jasmane, we're so sorry for any confusion here. Upon review, we were able to locate a duplicate account of yours that contained the recent subscription charges you're seeing. To protect your privacy, we'll be having a specialist follow up with you via email with all of the information so you may have it for your reference. Please keep an eye on your inbox and continue to correspond with us via email in the meantime. Thanks so much!
If I could leave a 0 star review I would. This company continues to charge you even after you cancel. And then tells you they are "unable to refund". Seriously, take your business elsewhere. Completely unethical.
Hey Monica, we'd like to take another look at your case. Please email us at help@scribd.com, then update your review with your ticket number and a member of our team will reach out to you shortly. Thanks!
