Scribd has a rating of 1.4 stars from 877 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers complaining about Scribd most frequently mention credit card, free trial, and customer service problems. Scribd ranks 199th among Ebook sites.
Been a user for about 3 years now and I'm continually surprised by what I can find here, from mags, through books to audiobooks. All at a bargain price, half of ehat audible charges for 1 book a month.
Joined Scribd/Everand a month ago. Their "free trial" is not free. They charged my account twice within that 30-day free trial period...once after two weeks of the trial and then at the end of it. I canceled my subscription and notified my bank of the fraud. Not only am I disputing the charges but a Have had the bank remove the card from my account so they can't continue to steal from me. I had hoped this subscription would be good...it seemed so at first. Then, I found out that not only are they fraudulent in their charges but there's a limit on how many books you can read in a billing cycle. Initially, when you search online for a good ebook subscription, Everand seems like a good choice until you actually have to deal with them. The complaints about them outweigh the good reviews and all seem to have a common thread - deceptive business practices.
Similar situation as all the others here, didn't see the charge of USD8.99 for 4 months, and then just got one month refund back. I cancelled on time as well.
This site should be shut down immediately.
Just managed to cancel today, I'll see if I can report to my bank, but hopefully won't see a charge again.

If you elect to ignore all these people warning you off, at least take this advice; do not save all the audiobooks you are interested in to your reading list. They will make 80% of the books unavailable to you until your free trial has passed. This bait and switch amounts to unfair trade practices as defined in the state consumer protection laws of which I am aware. If I have one-tenth of the trouble canceling that the rest of these folks describe, I am going to make it my new hobby to get cease and desist orders issued by every state they do business in. (Note to Scribd.com, you'd be better off telling me to fornicate with myself than giving me that scripted, "sorry, but there's always something to read" response I keep seeing. I'd applaud that measure of honesty.
Hey Joel- We apologize for any confusion with your Scribd membership. You'll notice the catalog rotate as you read, not as you save titles. Please feel free to email us at help@scribd.com with any questions or concerns, our support team is more than happy to assist you. Thanks!
After I had a subscription on scribd.com, I found that every month two payments were taken from the card on different days (both $ 8.99, the monthly subscription being $ 8.99)
After I closed my account, they continued to take my money monthly.
After long discussions via email, we received confirmation of the closing of the account and the return of a single amount of $ 8.99 improperly withheld.
After confirming the closing of the account, the surprise!
He continues to take money from my monthly account, but I no longer respond to emails.
I had to go to the bank monthly to report abusive transactions.
There are credit card thieves.
Hi Loan, my name is Rebecca and I'd like to step in and make this right for you. Can you please reply and update your review to include the ticket number from your most recent email correspondence with us? I want to look you up and connect asap. Thanks!
I have email messages dating back to July, 2019 asking them to refund my money and stop the deductions. All I keep getting is there is no record and they can't locate my membership. I hate to change bank account numbers for $8.99, it would disrupt my entire autopay life! I just checked again, having time now with the Covid-19 shutdown, and find I'm still being charged $8.99 per month. Count me in for the class action suit!
I'm so sorry that has been ongoing! We are always happy to help with refunds, but we need to find your account in order to do so. Please feel free to update here with your ticket number from support and we'll be sure to continue assisting you. For now, thanks again for contacting us here and have a great day!
Report to FBI inmediately. Please everyone on here with problems report to the FBI website. This is completely unacceptable. Not only did I never sign up for any trial and am getting charged but my bank canceled my debit card - gave me a new one- and somehow they got access to that number as well and charged it this month. I am beyond frustrated and just reported it. Please everyone let's help each other out and report all this abuse so this company can be shut down and stop cheating and stealing from innocent people
Hi there. I've sent a message to you last week and have not heard a response. We will need additional information from you to further assist you with locating an account and issuing any refunds, if necessary. Please email us at help@scribd.com and message me back here with your ticket number. Thanks! -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
Paid 6 months of 8.99 and repeatedly tried to cancel from the get-go. This is a scam of a service with no good useful products. Their website makes it purposely impossible to navigate to cancel. I got confirmation that I canceled my subscription in 2/2018 and I was still billed in 3/2018. I wish this company would disappear from the face of the planet--steer clear.
Hi Michelle - I'm so sorry to hear you were charged after you canceled. We are happy to make this right with you. Please send us an email to help@scribd.com and we will absolutely issue a refund.
I was supposed to have a free trial until September 14th, so of course I was surprised whenever I had a charge on my account on the 7th. These people are so dirty and there is not a bit of contact information. I think it is just one huge scam. Of course I can't get a real live human to email me back about my issue. I am reporting them to every agency and organization I can, and I suggest everyone else that's been screwed over does the same. I have no idea how this joke of a company still exists and the people who run it haven't wound up in jail yet. What a load of crap.
Hi Erica, I'm so sorry for any confusion here. What you received was a pending verification charge. It's not an actual charge; the system does a transaction to verify that the card used is valid but it's automatically voided when it occurs so the money will never process out of your account. It should be listed on your account a few days as "pending" and then disappear as if it never happened; the exact timeframe on when it disappears will depend on your bank however. It is just a method used to verify that the card provided at sign up is valid so the service can be successfully added to your account. I apologize for any trouble it's caused for you! If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to email us at help@scribd.com. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
It says they will notify you after 1 month trial. They didn't. I tried to cancel and they then tried to charge me. Books I wanted to read during free trial kept disappearing. This is not an honest company
Hello Cathy, I wanted to reach out to you to see if I could help explain any charges, messages you are seeing about unavailable books and answer any other questions you may have. I can also see if your account is eligible for a refund. If you have a support ticket please let me know the number or submit a ticket through this link and your request will be escalated straight to my inbox: bit.ly/social-support-help
Thanks! -LC
The registration says 'Don't worry, we won't take any money without your consent'. Guess what? After 30 days, $9 substracted from my account. They tell you to write to support and you'll get your money back, but the support system doesn't work, it's just constanly loading. In my inbox I get message showing as 'sent' but also 'solved'.
Hi Andre, we apologize for any confusion with your Scribd membership. To clarify, we do not offer a standalone free trial. A free trial period is included in your subscription purchase per the terms and conditions you would have agreed to upon signing up. Additionally, our system merges duplicate tickets in order to lessen confusion for customers and agents alike, which is why you're seeing some marked as "closed" or "solved". We're more than happy to escalate your case and get it taken care of. Please update your review with your ticket number so we can locate your case and follow up from there -- thanks!
I had scribd back when it was unlimited e-books and audio books and it was GREAT. I recommended it all the time and I was putting away between 18-30 audibooks a month. <3 <3 <3 I totally understand how that was not sustainable. The monthly scribd selects were fine at first, but now they never change and the few times one is taken out and replaced with a different book it's usually a book that has already come through. I have a year long subscription, but I probably won't re-up after it runs out this summer. I read too much for this to be worth the money. If you're a less avid reader (3-5 books a month) this could actually be a GREAT option, but be aware there will be limitations.
They have taken money from my account for the last two years without my knowledge. I had no recollection of joining Sribd - they are scammers! Am working with bank now to get money back. How do they get away with this?
Hi Jason, Thank you for informing us and we apologize for any recent charges and for any confusion! Scribd is a digital reading subscription that brings you monthly access to the best books, audiobooks, news, and magazines. The charge you are seeing is likely for our monthly subscription fee.
As we cannot charge subscription fees without an active subscription, we would like to look into this for you and help locate the charges. Scridb when asked, Are authors paid when I read premium membership content? They say "YES! Of course!" This is a lie! This is so sad for the hard-working authors. Please send Scribd a notice that they are not helping America, or any author in our world. They stole our book. We are lucky enough to get help from our lawyer, but there are many more authors out there that do not even know Scribd is letting people. On Scribd's site upload these books, to let members download them. Shame on you Scribd, the world works in balance, and it will come back to you.
Hi Nancy. We ensure our authors can continue doing what they love and write great books for our readers to enjoy by making sure they're compensated when their work is part of the premium membership service. Scribd has deals with our authors and publishing partners concerning payment for all the membership content. Basically, every time you read a title thats in the program we pay the author the full price of their work! Revenue that Scribd earns from monthly membership fees is paid to the original publishers or authors of the included titles based on the agreements we have with them every time you read their work on Scribd! If you have additional questions and /or concerns, please email us at help@scribd.com or refer to our FAQ page link here: https://support.scribd.com/hc/en-us/articles/210129306-How-do-authors-benefit-from-Scribd-s-premium-membership-program- Thank you. -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
Beware! They steal your card info and deduct payments for non-existing memberships. I had to cancel my card in order to get them off my back. The US is full of crooks like them. Don't fall for any of their afvertisement.
Please be aware that we cannot charge a canceled subscription. It sounds likely that you may have a duplicate account and our support team is more than happy to help you. To email our support team, please use this link: https://scr.bi/assist and one of our agents will help you as soon as possible -EC
An "Author" on Scribd decided to publish the content of their website, along with reviews from happy customers- along with those customers' personal email addresses and full names. Scribd refuses to change this.
Hi Nonya - I'm sorry to hear this and I will do my best to get this corrected. Could you please update your review with your ticket number from when you contacted us and a link to the document in question? Thank you!
This company is charging be and I have never signed up or started a trial. When I wrote their support and provided the requested information, they asked for all my information, name, address, dob, additional card numbers, etc. I'm issuing a chargeback and reporting fraud.
Tip for consumers:
Stay away! Fraud alert!
Products used:
None. They are charging me anyways.
Thank you for informing us, Charles! Please be aware, Scribd would never request such information to locate your account. I want to ensure you're contacting our actual support team, so please either email us at support@scribd.com and update this review with your ticket number OR email us using this link: https://scr.bi/assist and one of our agents will assist you within 24 hours -EC
I go through about 10 audiobooks a month so you can see why I was a huge fan of scribd from the start. Finally a place to get audiobooks for a low price! Audible fee is crazy and you only get a few credits each month. So now to my astonishment, Scribd has moved away from subscription audiobooks. Yeah there are some that are still included in the subscription but it's a crappy selection. If I have to pay for each audiobook, it's not really a subscription in my opinion. 1 credit is laughable. I will most likely be canceling the membership very soon and just stick with amazon unlimited. Looks like canceling may be a laborious process based on the reviews I've seen here. Yay.
On another note, the search function and organization of content is wonky. It would be nice to see all the books in a series in order from the first book to the last as well. I haven't had any issues with actual books and using the app, so that's something.
I've tried and tried to get an answer to why a payment of €9.99 has been taken from my bank account
If I use the site it just says this email is not manned by humans
If I use what I'm led to believe is a bona fide email address to get an answer I never get a response
I presume we have now reached the stage in technology where robots set up and run fraudulent websites
If anybody can tell me how to communicate with a human at Scribd - even the guy who maintains the robots I would appreciate it
Please use *******@gmail.com as it's an email the robots don't know
Thanks
Tony
Hi Tony! We apologize for any confusion. Scribd is a digital reading subscription that brings you monthly access to the best books, audiobooks, news, and magazines. Many of our members use our website and app to read everything from bestsellers and old classics to legal documentation and instruction manuals. We also carry a wide variety of sheet music and news articles along with thousands of audiobooks. The charge you are seeing is likely for our monthly subscription fee.
With that said, we are happy to further research the matter as well as cancel the subscription to ensure you are no longer billed going forward.
To better assist you, please create a ticket support team directly using this link: https://scr.bi/assist. Thanks - MR
I never join or order something without reviewing, except for now! Joined for the "free two week trial" then read a review on the app, wasnt good, so came here. Yep they lie about the "unlimited"! You get 3 books or only ONE audio a month. Also read that they continue to charge your card. I immediately canceled, which took 6 pages as kept saying,"oh youre not canceled yet! Do you want to stay"? Over and over! Finally got there but i noticed my cc info was still on the account, so you also have to deactivate the account also, beware of this. Then I called my CC to block a charge if I could, they had ALREADY charged it! It was refunded after I canceled but will keep checking. I guess this company promised more than it could deliver but not being honest about it.
I have no idea how I got signed up for this, there is no phone number to call. When I actually finally got into my account it says I do not have a membership but I keep getting charged. When I contacted the email address, I was told it was resolved and my account was cancelled, yet here I am another month trying to cancel and get my refund!
Hi Christine - I'm sorry to hear about your unexpected charge. Most likely, you have a second account with us which is why you're still being charged after you thought you canceled. Please send us an email to help@scribd.com and we'll track down your second account and issue a refund. Thank you!
As all the others who have reviewed here, my experience is that this is a string-you-along business that just relies on the fact that people will run out of steam. They promise a response in 6 hours. It has been 48. Still no response. The book that they claimed to have they in fact only had a few pages of. So I demanded to cancel. Crickets. If this is the business model, stay far far away.
Scribd is a fraud, first of, they never have the books i want to read. SEcondly i got debited for $8.99 after deleting my accoun. I have sent them 4 emails, messages on twitter and 0 response, maybe its because I live in the 3rd world but this is a bull$#*! company.
Hi Damilola, I can see that our support representative Donni has replied to you with further information as to why you were charged on your active subscription, and she has refunded you. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
I canceled my subscription on July 20th, 2019. They charged me a day later for the full subscription amount despite my having canceled it. They then proceeded to either delete my account or change the email on file because I have not been able to access it since. When I attempt to log in, they state that there's no account under the email address I used to sign up for the website. Again, I never deleted my account nor did I go ahead and change my email, yet they charged me once more a day ago for the full subscription amount. I'm currently trying to get Paypal to dispute the charges given how useless their customer service team is. Do not give your information to this website as they will bleed you dry and will be completely unapologetic about it. As many other reviewers have stated, their selection is not unlimited, and they routinely cull their libraries. Absolute waste of money. You'd be better off getting a subscription elsewhere.
Hi Oli - A member of our support team can definitely look into this for you. Please email us at help@scribd.com, then update your review with your ticket number and a member of our team will reach out to you shortly. Thanks!
I have a monthly charge to my credit card. When I log into Scribd, though, I'm being told that I don't have an account with them and they don't have any payment information for me...then how is my card being charged?
Thank you for informing us! It sounds like you may have a duplicate account, one subscribed and one that is not. That said, no worries! Our support team can help. I located the email you sent us and responded again, so please check your inbox (and spam) for our reply via email and we'll wait for your response so we can assist you. Thanks! -EC
I purchased a membership for this subscription service. From my understanding I only agreed to purchase a 1 month membership. They have been charging me for over half a year now. I ma trying to cancel my account, there is no way I can talk to anyone pver the phone. The only solution offered is that I provide my personal credit info over email. I have made it clear that I am not comfortable sharing such info over email. I have asked multiple times to do this over the phone rather but they are not willing to make the accommodation.
I would NOT RECOMMEND this service. There are other options available for online subscription services that will be much more reliable and not cause a head ache.
Hi Nate. We are still waiting for your response for additional information to locate your account. Please check your email and response with requested information. Thanks! -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
I'm very disappointed with Scribd. I liked the product, but the billing service is terrible. Even I wasn't login much for the past year, but decided stay on the autopay. Until last week, I found out that I was double charged for 8 months. They looked into it and said that I have two accounts. Apparently, one time, I entered a different e-mail address. There you go, they signed me up for it! Okay, I'm not going to dig further as why I was signed up again without knowing. I just wanted the refund for the double charged portion. They did refund me, but only for 6 months. When I requested for the remainder 2 months refund, there was no response. Basically they forced me to cancel my membership. Now, I'm concerned that they may continue charge me even after the cancellation. It's really too bad because I was going to continue keep them even though I've not use the service much lately. I will consider getting the subscription in the future if they can resolve this matter now.
Thanks for reaching out to us here and I am truly so sorry for any frustration. Please know, we are always willing to do what we can for our customers. 6 months is the maximum amount of refunds our payment processors permit, however, I can absolutely help review your account and assess if it is eligible for any additional refunds. Please be sure to update here with your ticket number, and I'll be sure to get back to you as soon as possible to help.
