Scribd has a rating of 1.4 stars from 877 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers complaining about Scribd most frequently mention credit card, free trial, and customer service problems. Scribd ranks 199th among Ebook sites.
Been a user for about 3 years now and I'm continually surprised by what I can find here, from mags, through books to audiobooks. All at a bargain price, half of ehat audible charges for 1 book a month.
Joined Scribd/Everand a month ago. Their "free trial" is not free. They charged my account twice within that 30-day free trial period...once after two weeks of the trial and then at the end of it. I canceled my subscription and notified my bank of the fraud. Not only am I disputing the charges but a Have had the bank remove the card from my account so they can't continue to steal from me. I had hoped this subscription would be good...it seemed so at first. Then, I found out that not only are they fraudulent in their charges but there's a limit on how many books you can read in a billing cycle. Initially, when you search online for a good ebook subscription, Everand seems like a good choice until you actually have to deal with them. The complaints about them outweigh the good reviews and all seem to have a common thread - deceptive business practices.
I have been trying to log in to my scribd account to cancel my subscription before my 30 day free trial ends but every time I try to sign in I CAN'T GET IN, the site just brings me back to the home page. I have submitted a request but I never heard back. I am a broke college student I cannot pay for this.
I gave the website my credit card information for a free trial and am now unable to log in due to not knowing the password. But I was NEVER even asked to set a password and now I am unable to RESET my password so getting into my account is impossible. I haven't been charged yet, but if I am I will be FURIOUS, Please fix this issue and I will change the review to a 5, however as many other reviewers have noted, this reeks of scam.
Hi Marcus - When you created your account, you would have set-up your own password. We're happy to reset it for you; please send us an email to help@scribd.com and we'll get this taken care of!
I signed up for a free trial on Scribd at the end of May so that I could access a powerpoint that I saw on the site. When I realize that it wasn't an actual powerpoint but just a pdf copy I canceled my account the same day (I now realize that they never sent me a record of that cancellation). On June 24th I was charged 11.99 anyways. I emailed them on June 29th explaining the issue and got no response. On July 24th my credit card was charged again. On July 25th I cancelled the account again (because it didn't show that it was cancelled) and I contacted Scribd again. This time I got confirmation of my contacts to them but no confirmation of my cancellation and no response from Scribd I tried to dispute the charge with American Express and Scribd immediately answered Amex and told them that there was no record of my first cancellation so Amex is charging me the 11.99 from June 24. I have not heard back about the second charge of 11.99.
Tip for consumers:
Beware. They do not respond to customer contact.

Kept uploading files (which they would save) but wouldnt let me download any files in return. Thought it hadn't uploaded properly, but when I tried to upload them again to download a book, they wouldnt accept it as I had already uploaded it for them, but still wouldnt let me download a single thing. Awful.
Hi there, we’re very sorry that was your experience with us as we do appreciate you taking the time to upload content onto Scribd. Please reach out to us at bit.ly/social-support-help and a member of our support team will gladly look into this for you to see what caused that download issue. Thanks! -MW
I did respond. It took them a couple days but i was refunded my money back. Thank you. It would be better if you had a customer service number and not just email to betrer help customers
Hi Jessica. I'm glad to hear that you were able to get a refund. At this time we do not offer phone support and we apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused. If you need anything else, please email us at help@scribd.com. Thank you! -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
I was charged today 5/24/2017 and i had already cancelled my membership and still was charged. I have no way of getting a hold of anyone from customer service and send several email. I just want my refund back and completely off of scribd. And when i cancelled it still says i have until june 23rd. I want nothing to do with this site and have not been on it.
They didn't sent me a notice that my free trial was over and charged me twice for the membership and won't answer to my emails, I asked for a refund about 3 days ago and no answer.
Hi Diana, we're sorry for the trouble you've encountered with these charges. We would be happy to look into this and issue you a refund. We're currently encountering a higher than normal ticket volume, which could be the reason why you haven't had a response from us yet. Just to let you know it takes MAJOR steps to cancel your membership. I thought I had done it, but had not clicked through enough windows to actually CANCEL. It turns out, I had just deactivated, so keep clicking until you get to the little bar that says you have actually cancelled. They make it really, really hard for you to leave, and if you click on the wrong thing, or just assume you've done your job, you WILL get hit with a charge.
I cancelled account in January 2021 and they kept debiting for 21 months at almost $300. No email contact in that time because account is cancelled! No Contact from Scribd. Beware!
Tip for consumers:
Beware when you cancel they still charge.

[Update Added Below]
I gave Scribd a try by subscribing to their one-month membership trial. That wasn't bad but since I use my Kindle most of the time, so I decided to cancel the trial. They took me through a couple of steps, left me thinking that I was done. And guess what! I was charged in the next month. So I calmed me down, go to Account Setting to find that my membership is still activated. I tried to go through the cancellation again. And just like the last time, after a couple of steps, I thought it was done. But no mail, nor any notification! I started to freak out, I did it again, this time I just noticed that the cancellation just didn't end there (like most pages, you click Cancel, then you click Confirm, and you're done). Although the third page said something like they had acknowledged (We want to change or whatsoever), and below there was a tiny text, yeah, TEXT - NOT EVEN a BUTTON saying "Continue to cancel". What the hell? Okay then, take my $8.99 and you will never have me or any of my friends ever coming to your site ever ever again!
- Update - 2018/7/6
Looks like my voice was heard, and they offered me a refund after all. I can barely say that I changed my mind about their system, though. At least they tried to solve the problems that it created. And I appreciate their effort. Hope that they will make the cancellation process more transparent and user-friendly. Maybe I will be back.
Hi Trung - I'm so sorry to hear about your frustrations with our subscription, but I'm so glad it was resolved for you! If you ever have any questions or issues, please email us at help@scribd.com and, as you have witnessed first-hand, we have great customer service and are happy to help in any way!
Beware. Scribd.com is a scam site. They just charged my debit and I had never heard of them. The weird thing is that on their site, I logged in with my AMAZON account email and password, a combination I have never had with any other online venue. I suspect this company hacked Audible.com, an AMAZON company I recently used and a competitor of Scribd.
Scribd has no customer service phone number, and they do not answer their emails.
BEWARE OF AUDIBLE.COM since SCRIBD has apparently hacked their database, which is the exact same info on your AMAZON account. I talked with AMAZON and with AUDIBLE, but they could not help.

Hi Elise.
First, I must be clear: Scribd has never obtained accounts from Audible and any such accusation is without merit.
That said, I think I found your email to us. Did you also write to our support team on Nov-22 (the same day as this review), in ticket #652542? If so, I’m glad to see that we responded to your email within about a half-hour and, despite an initial mistake and false start on our part (very sorry about that!), on Nov-24 we were able to refund your charge and cancel your recurring annual subscription.
If that’s not you, please do email us at support@scribd.com and we’ll be happy to help fix this. —Jerry, Manager, Scribd Customer Service
They give you a free trial for a month and say "Don't worry, we'll email you before your trial ends." but THEY DON'T! They charged me with 98€ without asking me anything! Thieves!
Hi Koen, thank you for bringing this to our attention. We're so sorry for any frustration this might have caused, especially if you didn't receive our free trial reminder email!
It looks like a member of our support team followed up with you in support ticket #4954487 to confirm that your subscription was canceled and a refund was granted for that renewal charge as well. Of course, if you have any other questions or concerns, we're happy to help - just reply to that ticket and we'll get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks again! -MW
Great! They refunded the money as per the conversion. I really appreciate it.
Content of scribd is good but they need to check on the payment management as many are facing trouble.
Hi there, we just responded to you via email and confirmed cancellation of your account and refunded your charge. Our system automatically merges duplicate tickets, which is why one appeared closed without a reply. Thanks again for reaching out!
I have been charged $8.99 on 7/7/2020.My previous subscription was already cancelled. Without any notification my amount has been charged. Ticket no. ******* and is already running for 3 days. Ticket no. ******* has been solved today without any response. No response from your end. Please look into the matter. This is how you treat your customer. I want my refund.
Waiting for your reply.
These people do not care about their users. They would rather harp off of your misfortune than to help you. They thrive off of people forgetting to cancel their membership (like many other subscription services), and apparently still charge your card even after you "think" you've cancelled. An ethical company would shoot you and email saying "HEY, YOUR FREE SUBSCRIPTION IS ABOUT TO END AND WE ARE ABOUT TO CHARGE YOU". Nah, that's too much of a courtesy. They keep RADIO SILENT so that you don't know that you are being charged. Good companies like apple music will send you monthly receipts saying that they've charged you so that you are AWARE and can cancel if need be. The only thing that is worthy is that each month you get 3 free books and 1 free audiobook, so even if you've been charged unknowingly you can still use your books right? WRONG. THEY TAKE AWAY THOSE BOOK CREDITS. SO YOU HAVE NOTHING TO SHOW FOR THEY MONEY THEY STOLE FROM YOU. TRASH. DON'T USE THIS SITE.
Hi Monique,
You can cancel your free trial subscription's renewal at any time. You'll still receive your full 30 days, but will not be billed after that. Once your trial time ends, your free Scribd account will remain active, but you will no longer be able to view any of our premium content (whether it was saved to your device or otherwise). You'll still have access to your personalized profile and Scribd's vibrant community of readers though! You can always purchase a new subscription any time to restore access to the full breadth of Scribd's catalog. If you do not cancel your subscription before the end of the trial period, your credit card or whichever payment method you used on your account will be billed automatically for the coming month. You can still cancel future payments: when you cancel your paid subscription we'll ensure it remains active until the end of the current month that you've paid for, but will not bill you again.
When it comes to unlimited books, we have a couple of different options for folks to explore - "Scribd Selects" and our regular unlimited reads (all 150,000 of them!). Both options are completely free and unlimited to our members - no Monthly Credits required!
Scribd is similar to other streaming services, or a public library for example where you pay a flat fee each month to gain access to thousands of titles - but you don't actually own the content once you leave or have access to it without a membership for the same reasons.
I hope this helps to clear things up. Please email us at help@scribd.com if you have additional concern and/or feedback. Thank you. -Donni, Scribd Customer Support
I would not recommend using this $#*!ty website, they scam you out of your money. I cancelled my membership so many times and they keep charging me, I would love to sue.
Hi there - I'm so sorry to hear about this! Please send us an email to help@scribd.com and we will absolutely make this right with you.
They charged my account while sending me emails which claimed that I'm not subscribed yet. They made me think that I'd still be in the free trial and took money from me.
Hi Dennis, we'd like to look into this for you. Please email help@scribd.com and update this review with your ticket number so we can connect asap. Thanks!
Don't trust this company. Read about the reviews. It is SCAM> signed for a free trial and was charged at the end of 30 days EVEN THOUGH they promised 60 days and in my account, it is still showing 34 FREE DAYS LEFT. WORST COMPANY! Don't trust.
And I thought that for being American it would be a good choice. DON'T TRUST!
They don't answer any message on support
Hi Aline - Upon review, it looks like you've already reached out to us and we've responded to your inquiry. We are waiting for additional information from you so that we may assist further and get this resolved for you. As a reminder, please continue to follow-up with us in your original support message and we're happy to get this resolved for you ASAP. Thanks!
I signed up for a two month "free" trial, ended up not getting around to using it. So I go to cancel, and they have already charged my account a day before the receipt claimed I would be charged.
Hi Chani - A member of our support team can definitely look into this for you. Please email us at help@scribd.com, then update your review with your ticket number and a member of our team will reach out to you shortly. Thanks!
This is most likely a SCAM! I fell for it so you should stay away! I wanted the "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" PDF and I got it, but I cancelled my subscription immediately after so I wouldn't forget it later on so I won't get charged. After reading the reviews, I realized I had made a massive mistake. So if the Scribd Customer Support reads this, do NOT charge me, or I will report you to the authorities to get you shut down. I do NOT want any spam emails as well. I want my account DELETED. Please reply ASAP.
Tip for consumers:
STAY AWAY!
Hi Athan! Thank you for providing your email. I've just replied to your ticket with more information about your request to delete. Thanks! - Donni, Scribd Customer Support
I am charged every month without having an account or subscription active. I have checked already with all the emails that I have and I am charged 12$ every month by Scribd INC SAN FRANCISCO. I have checked number of times and I have never logged in with any of my emails. I have been trying to contact the Support team regarding this issue, but no answer whatsover. I would like to be contacted directly by the company to resolve this issue.

Got this e-mail today, April 24. Wow, they gave me a whole days notice to complete the final third of the book:(
We noticed that you started reading Ian Dury: Sex & Drugs & Rock 'N' Roll. Unfortunately, Ian Dury: Sex & Drugs & Rock 'N' Roll will no longer be available after Apr 25,2018, and we wanted to let you know as soon as possible.
Hi Oogie - I'm so sorry for that inconvenience. Please send us an email to help@scribd.com and we can absolutely make this up to you!
I had been with this site a pretty long time. In fact, this month would have been my one year anniversary with them. I thought they were fantastic. Not only did I get unlimited great books, but they had most of my college books under their document sections. At a $9 a month fee, I had saved over a thousand dollars on those college books alone! Not to mention the app worked great with no issues, no ad interruptions, and no shut downs. I have never even had a bad experience with their customer service.
My issue with Scribd is their recent change. I am so distraught over it, my 5 star review has dropped to 2. What happened is, they went from unlimited reading to a credit system. You get 3 credits a month+1 audiobook (most books are 1 credit each). For that price I would rather go back to library visits. This would be okay for some, but I read anywhere from 10-15 books a month. What really angered me about it though, is members like me got no warning of this change. To top it all off, since I decided to opt out of my membership rather than continue it, they decided that I no longer get to read the books that I had already used my credits for (credits that I had already paid for and rightfully deserved to use). I am beyond disappointed in their choice to make such a sudden change and not warn their members before doing so. At the very least, they could have offered a package that still allows the unlimited reading. If it was about cost, I would have gladly paid more to continue the membership I had.
DO NOT USE! I cancelled my membership and was still billed. I tried contacting them through email since there's no number on their website, still waiting on a response.
Hi Angel! I'm happy to see that this has been resolved with our support rep Donni as of July 25th. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any further questions. Thanks again! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
I must change my bank card to cancel payment, they can't find me with my e-mail to cancel it, but every month take money from card. Useless aplication, no star
